The Community Round-up

With only two weeks to go before the kick-off of a certain summer tournament, the Fantasy Football Scout Community have been focused on the build-up and potential fall-out from the World Cup on our domestic campaigns.

Our Hot Topics consider the extent of the fatigue factor on day one of the Premier League season, while we also consider those players likely to contribute to the Gameweek 1 template.

Elsewhere, World Cup Fantasy occupies our thoughts, as discussions touch on the start date and mechanics of the forthcoming official game from McDonalds.

Finally, news of a brand new community tournament – based on the World Cup friendlies starting tonight – ends our round-up.

The Community Articles

RedLightning ‘s analysis of the newly promoted teams to the Premier League from 2010-2018 has already found a place on our required reading list for the summer.

His findings suggest that we should tread carefully when considering Championship strikers, while clean sheets have also proved hard to come by in previous years. Thanks to increased save points, it is the goalkeepers that should occupy our thoughts based on his handy retrospective.

Elsewhere, Stoichkov#8 has taken the initiative and filled the gap for us Fantasy managers while we wait for the World Cup opener. He has set up a new Fantasy tournament running from tonight through to June 12, focusing on the forthcoming friendlies, with eight Gameweeks spanning the next 12 days. Managers must post on the Community Article each day with their selections, and he will do the rest.

Don’t forget, if you’ve got some analysis, scout reports, or features brewing, be sure to visit our community section to submit your article.

The Hottest Topics

Planning for the new season is already in swing as Triggerlips raised the prospect of introducing more FPL position categories as an improvement to the game. He suggests attacking and defensive midfield positions, as well as splitting the defence.

Away from potential rule changes, we switched attention to “FPL bang for buck” with our Hot Topic which looked to predict the best value players to emerge next season.

Meanwhile, FFFrøg considered how influential beaten Champions League finalists Liverpool will be in our Fantasy seasons, predicting them to make a crucial contribution to the Gameweek 1 template.

World Cup fatigue could be a factor that influences the teamsheets for that opening weekend, and we asked how likely this was to enter into our thinking when devising our initial squads.

Pep Guardiola typically requires little reason to frustrate us with his line-up, and with speculation on their future signings gathering pace, we also asked how we will approach Manchester City’s assets should the rotation risk escalate next season.

Switching back to the imminent World Cup Fantasy games, FFFrøg returned to provide some much-needed clarity on the launch of the McDonalds Fifa format.

Meanwhile, BITM2007 focused on the chips in that game, to present a strong case for activating them over the knockout stages.

To view all our discussions please visit our Hot Topics page.

The Community Tournaments

The World Cup Friendlies Fantasy Tournament started today, and the standings will be updated in next weeks Community Round-up. You can join the tournament in the relevant Community Article right here.

Meanwhile, organiser Stoichkov#8 clarified a few points for the tournament in this Hot Topic.

If you are considering setting up a community tournament for the World Cup and would like the latest scores included in future Community Round-ups, please email us a summary of the current leaders and a link to your league, spreadsheet, or head to head competition at geoff@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk.

Can we have an analysis of Arsenal squad under Unai Emery like we had for promoted squads? Will help us decide what players will be in favor depending on his system and his historic preferences for Europa over league glory. Especially interested on possible effect on Ramsey/Aubameyang/Mustafi/Cech/Ozil

True but it's not a bad idea tbh especially with already 2 new managerial appointments made then maybe nearer the start could do a new manager round-up?
How their style may affect certain players etc.

If Ramsey is priced similar to last season he could be brilliant. I'm hoping he can add some steal which could make defence an option

Thank you Geoff for consideration. I know I am asking this too early, but as soon as frienlies are finished articles on Unai, pellegrini and silva as spencer suggested below will be great help! Especially fpl goldies like Ramsey/Walcott/Arnie/Creswell/Coleman can be looked at

      That would be fantastic.

Everton under Silva and West Ham under Pellegrini would also be good, though we know a bit more about their style of play.

Egypt just put up a hardcore park the bus display to deny Colombia 0-0 without Salah. Hegazi was the best player for me. I guess I will take that any day especially if we could repeat that against Uruguay.

That was a decent result against Colombia.

Maybe losing Salah for a while may be a blessing in disguise as it will give the rest of the team a chance to come to the fore and when Salah returns Egypt might be all the stronger and will be ready to kick on to the knockout stage.

You just have your team staggered throughout the fixtures. There always plares with one or two points to get rid of but you don't switch them until the last minute in case someone turns up who does even worse

I'm going to play the telegraph game and for it you get points for key contributions. Thoughts on what players this would benefit most? I'm thinking that it will help players like Kroos, KDB, Modric, Coutinho, etc. the most. Do you think that this could help midfielders score more points than forwards?

Re hot topic next seasons bargains.
1.I think this Wolves team with the money they have to spend and their attacking full backs may turn out to be the best promoted side (fpl wise) in a very long time.Looking to have at least two of them in my team.
2.A saints defender plus Charlie Austin if they don’t bring in another striker (same goes for Tosun)
    3.Mendy if fit.

You will have to make some sacrifices somewhere if you’re wanting Salah Auba etc. in there.
Wolves attacking full backs particularly Douglas look good and Neves in midfield also high potential.Saints will perform better under Hughes after preseason imo.

Neves is a deep- lying CM who only got as many goals as he did in the Championship because it's the Championship. He is not a fantasy option. Also Douglas will be 5.0, not really a bargain

Hughes barely saved them from relegation and the only way he did was by sacrificing the defence and trying to score goals.

Humour me... ( no 'please no more chips responses 🙄 )

Next season, there are FIVE chips + two WC's.
The WC pattern of 1 each half is kept - and - a minimum of 2 chips must also be played each half.

Assuming we all do our usual, and save 3 chips for the DGW's in the 2nd half of the season, which two chips would you use in the first half?

    TC - Triple Captain
    BB - Bench Boost
    FH - Free Hit
    PB - Park the bus*
    AP - Autopilot**

*as per Eliteserien, all 5 defenders score double points
**similar to McDonslds 'Maximum Captain' only your entire XI including captain is autopicked based on your best scorers (e.g. your bench GK would be auto subbed on if he outscored your starter)

For me, the FH would be carried over for blanks in the second half, but I think there's a great degree of diversity over which of the others you would play, and when...GO!

I'd like a chip that banishes all other chips to the moon. Thus making the game more about the season rather than 3 dgw and a blank.

In all seriousness id like just the one WC. Remove the TC because it's pointless . I'd keep BB and probably go with the defensive one

          No FH chip

Or how about give users 1 WC. And 1 each of the others. ( no FH) . They can play only 2 of them but it's up to them which ones

TBH, I feel it's unrealistic to think that FPL will ever revert to less than the current crop of 2x WC + 3x chips. Far more likely to increase than decrease whatever the chip-burners want!

Interested to see if there's a common theme of which chips would be saved for DGW's. I'm not sure there would be. Think it'd create a degree of diversity in strategy that would be refreshing. Certainly better than just doubling up the current crop of chips that we have...which has been suggested lots elsewhere (which incidentally would lead to a total of SIX chips 😮 )

Oh ok then if i must 🙂 Probably TC and park the bus. I think these 2 would prove the most worthless in the 2nd part of the season . Let's face it TC isn't all that , Carroll Kun Kane are my last 3 TC'S, which speaks volumes . I'd play it when Salah plays the worse looking team .

Park the bus id probably look to play it after the first WC setting myself up for a bit of a block defence .

I’d use autopilot in the first half.
Possibly bench boost in week 1 where I’d create a balanced team of mid priced players so I could have a great bench. Then i would wildcard in about week 3 or 4 as usual.

It's no more risky than using it in a double at the end of the season and having 2 or 3 players who are rotated, obviously you don't select any punts or doubts for a start at all as you have one shot at it.

You'll also save on giving points back or spending them to fix up a bench before or after use, that in itself gives it the edge for me.

I spent 8 points to fix my bench to use in the BB, defeated the object of using it to gain from extra players.

I think WC and BB just before winter fixture rush kicks in, so you have a good bench before the fixtures start to kill

The BB at the end of the season is a complete waste now, football has evolved quickly with the money pumped into the game, it's such squad game now and at the end of a long season it's going to be rare that you nail 15 players playing twice.

This is my issue. Used at the end of the season it also means you end up weakening your 11 to spread quality over your 15, which isn't ideal for the run in.

It's an interesting argument though as you'll get plenty on here saying BB in a DGW is essential as it's a free extra 8pts.

Shouldn't take long for the "it's not right, it needs to have this factored in and that factored in" brigade to come up with their version 😆

On a serious note though when I compare their season stats to mine, it's only just dawning on me just now how serious the captain choice is. It's always been something I've "played" around with in the past but those days will have to be numbered now...

Yeah my captaincy record is appalling ... according to the stats my best strategy might be to pick my captain and vice captain then at the last minute switch them as I think my vice outscored the cap by over 100 pts last season.

Mine not great, but I don't think as bad as yours but there's definitely room for improvement:
            Total captain score 516
Captain score had you swapped all C / VC 448
Captain score as % of overall score 23.79%

Need to strap down the maverick in me and just play sensible (dullard?) for once, but I know deep down that will be an impossible task 😆

                Gave me:
Possible Total Points if you Always Captained Highest Scorer out of (C) and (VC) : 2237

Difference Between your Total Points and the Above Number : -68

Possible Total Points if you Always Captained Highest Scorer : 2410

I'm not expecting to have the perfect season by any stretch of the imagination, but it's easy to see that my captain score could have been better overall...

    https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/44130553

This quite neatly sums up my reservations with this France squad. Deschamps can never seem to pick the right squad at the right time, and if he starts Giroud through this World Cup I think this will be proven. They have a phenomenal squad but he is an average manager at best who makes more mistakes than most others. He consistently fails to get Pogba to play well, when that should be one of his priorities and his defence has consistent lapses that lead to them giving away poor goals. I think they will get out of the group, but only having been beaten by one of Peru or Denmark. They've lacked a clear or consistent goalscorer since the Euros, as shown by their top goalscorers in qualifying being Giroud and Griezmann with 4 apiece - if they start Dembele, Mbappe and Griezmann against Australia this gives them their best chance of success but I still don't see any of these players finishing the tournament with more than 2, or maximum 3, goals each; it's just not how Deschamps gets them to play. Griezmann certainly won't live up to the 10m+ pricetag he's given in the Mcdonald's game and I will be steering clear.
