The departure of Riyad Mahrez is the theme that runs throughout our latest detailed analysis for the new Fantasy Premier League season.

The Algerian leaves a big hole at Leicester City from both a goal-scoring and assist-providing perspective, meaning those left behind will have to up their game.

We’ve gone over last season’s underlying statistics to assess which players could fill the void and whether the Foxes are worth considering in 2018/19 without Mahrez.

Fantasy Football Scout members can view that data in the Members’ Area and also read our full analysis of it below to help them pick the best possible FPL team this season.

So looking like the smart money could be on Salah-Auba-Kun for GW1, with whatever else you can fit around them.

I was totally set on starting with Firmino, but mayactually have to go without now, to enable those three... Austin/Zaha/Tosun/Arnie are much kinder on the budget than Bobby

Could he punish non owners though?

Surely that kills your team structure and balance? You will likely be captaining Salah most times with the odd time on another premium? 3 seems over kill?

Balance is important GW1, so I don't think it's about getting all 3 as it leaves the team incredibly unbalanced with little room for manoeuvre to change the set-up.

      Balance does not exist.

It depends which players perform. If Salah, Auba and Kun all get off to flyers and you only have one of them, it'll be difficult to find the money for the other two.

Similarly, the top 6 could all keep clean sheets and the lower teams get hammered, or you could get a season where there's not many goals scored, meaning there's a lot of clean sheets in general and the lower teams' defence are better value.

A 'balanced' team isn't necessarily good, because you could struggle to get the really premium players in, basically.

      1. Epic Fail
        • 15 Years
        7 years, 4 months ago

        True that.

In the end, no matter what your team is, you are always just a few transfers away from shifting the 'balance' to whatever is in fashion. Obviously taking hits isn't ideal but it's not the end of the world.

    Karius 4.0 (bold I know!)
Bailey Stones Cedric Daniels 4.5 (everton?)
    KDB Mane Miki Pedro 4.5
    Kane Firmino Tosun

I'm obviously waiting on more news regarding Kane and KDB for gw1 before deciding, but I think this team is pretty alround, and I'd like to keep my WC for as long as possible. Either that or make a nailed on squad for two-three gw's and then WC.

Vardy isn't really very good at playing with another striker next to him. Near the end of last season Nacho was really growing into the sort of Okazaki role, but now we've finally signed a real No 10 I don't think he will start. It's great tp have him as a depth option though as it's clear he's now good enough to start if we change formation

Not exactly the question, of course, but I was chatting to a Norwich season-ticket-holder today who was absolutely convinced young James Maddison is about to destroy the EPL. Thought he was good enough for somewhere like Chelsea and that Leicester were lucky, lucky boys. Just in the unlikely event that you were thinking more of 'Leicester assets', and less of 'possible 5.0s'.

      1. Witty Pun: Not good at this…

He'll be more of a No. 10, with Diabate and Gray probably on the wings, although we'll probably sign another winger. Neither Gray or Diabate have any end product atm, although Diabate is a lot more raw than Gray so there's lots of possible improvement to be had.

How’s this looking for a flexible 4-3-3 (4-4-2 for the odd tough Jimenez fixture that Cairney covers with nice fixtures)?

Will need to monitor Wan-B and Masuaku obviously but hoping there will be viable 4.0 and 4.5 alternatives if not to make this happen. Walcott the other than that could be replaced by another option, not entirely convinced.

    Foster | (Fabianski)
    Mendy | Robertson | Douglas | Cedric | (Wan-Bissaka)
    Salah | Marrez | Walcott | (Cairney) | (Masuaku)
    Aguero | Aubameyang | Jimenez

That was almost my exact same draft from last week. May go back to it. The best combination of goalkeepers is anyone's guess, I probably prefer Costa (or maybe even Ralls) to Cairney and not tempted at all by Masuaku (my latest theory is that we're all massively underestimating Puncheon's apparent fitness) but this is a fine, fine team.

One question - if after a few weeks Aguero starts getting rotated, what's the plan? Down to Firmino I guess seems easiest but it would be hard to take any more out of midfield to upgrade to Kane if necessary, no?

He started Keane and Holgate in the 'first XI' line-up the other day, and if he starts any combination of Holgate/Jags/Williams then there would be riots at Goodison. Actually, just forget about Williams, he's done. The only possible way Keane doesn't start at present is if Holgate essentially becomes top-dog and Silva thinks Jags still has the legs to keep Keane out of the team most weeks, which he doesn't. Trust me, It's Keane's place to lose. Still a rubbish fantasy asset, though. Smart money with a month to go is on Holgate at 4.5 if you just wanted cover, but more pre-season will tell us.

    Ederson

With AWB, Peltier and Kamara in there, you are asking for trouble. AWB might "win" the job, but he's young, and I think Ward will still get plenty of games. Liverpool have a bit more depth now, so Salah and Firmino will get the occasional rest. Having a playing bench will be important.

  20. Chelsea under Sarri
    AK ⭐

    Hello lads. Long post incoming.

So as a Chelsea fan, it was frustrating to see the Sarri saga go for months, but it feels really good to finally have him as our manager. In that duration, I had researched a fair bit about him and the term "Sarri-ball" and was hugely impressed.

He payed a 4-3-3 formation at Napoli with his front 3 being very narrow. I will try and guess the players that may play under him.

    Courtois*
    Azpilicueta Christensen* Rudiger Emerson/Alonso
    Kante - Jorginho - Barkley/Cesc/RLC
    Willian* - Morata* - Hazard*

His Napoli side attacked a lot more from the left flank than the right, with Hamsik being the key as Left Center Mid. In Chelsea's team, there's no real goalscorer in the midfield so it's anyone's guess who will be played as the LCM here. It could even be Barkley, in which case we could have a very good option. Cesc is more likely cause of his reputation but he probably doesn't have the legs to press all the time anymore.

Left Back is the key position here for me. Alonso lacks pace and is not very good technically on the ball, which works against him. Emerson is much better in that aspect and we may have a bargain here if Emerson is selected over Alonso.

I have included the * on players that may leave during this window. Hazard and Courtois are linked to Real Madrid, while Willian is linked with Barcelona.

Alvaro Morata is linked with AC MIlan and it seems like Chelsea are bringing in Rugani (CB) and Higuain from Juventus. Important to note that Rugani could be preferred over Christensen easily as he has played under Sarri at Empoli. He played every minute under him in the league and didn't get a single yellow card all season.

As for Higuain, he had the season of his lief under Sarri, scoring 36 goals in Serie A alone, becoming the best goalscorer ever in the competition. It remains to be seen whether he will be able to perform well, if he were to join.

Little correction here, as the * on Christensen doesn't mean he'll be sold. It just means this is a key position which could change if Rugani joins.

Yup, I'm not looking too much into Kante's links right now though. He has 3 years left in his contract still and it seems to be an enquiry from Barcelona at best. Others are a bit more realistic to go for me.

In my opinion, no. He'll probably be used as a backup and should see games in Cups and Europa League during the season. I wouldn't think he'd nail down the Right Wing role, but stranger things have happened.

I think Sarri will actually play a 4-3-1-2 formation. Especially if you end up losing Hazard and/or Willian. That's the formation that he used at Empoli and tried to use at Napoli at the start of his time there.

      1. AK ⭐
        • 13 Years
        7 years, 4 months ago

Yeah I did look at the possibility of a 4-3-1-2 as well, especially if Chelsea keep Morata while signing Higuain, but when I was writing there were some very reliable sources in Italy stating Milan's interest in signing Morata. They've had a change in ownership too.

At this moment, a 4-3-3 is much more suited to the squad that a 4-3-1-2 imo.

Copying this from another forum (not by me so not taking credit) as an addition to the conversation.

      Quote:
As for his tactics, Chelsea is basically good to go, great fit for him.

4-3-3, controlling the game with possession and trying to work it in the box with passing into space is the general idea.

One phyisically dominating CB, although I don't rate Rudiger. Koulibaly is a lot better.
Other one that's decent with the ball. Luiz, Cahill, Christiansen looks good enough and they're all better than Albiol.
Azpilicueta is better than Hysay. RB that's better defensively, but not inept in attack.
Left-back that is attack-oriented. Alonso is probably better than Ghoulam.
Jorginho will still be in charge of controlling the game from deep.
Allan is basically poor man's Kante, so that's an upgrade.
Third midfield position is the biggest question mark. Hamšik was the guy who moved into space, provided key passes and was a goal-scoring threat.
Lampard-type of player. Haven't seen enough of Bakayoko and RLC to know if they would excel at the role. Fabregas is kind of too slow for that at this point, better suited forJorginho's backup.
Insignie-Hazard is similar to Kante situation. Left winger that cuts inside and leaves space for LB, basically the best player and main threat on the team.
Same goes for Willian-Callejon, but Callejon is more of a forward, while Willian is a winger.
CF position is second biggest question mark. Sarri has proven he can work with various types of players. Higuain was great for Napoli. Mertens, completely different player replaced him and did well.
He has three different types in Michy, Morata and Giroud so I wouldn't really know, but I doubt he will go for anyone except for Higuain at a reasonable price.

Much like Conte, Sarri is really stubborn and set in his ways, regardless of their completely different views on football.
But unlike Conte, he's always said he doesn't care about transfers, he just gives his suggestions and that's it. Tries to get the best out of what he's got at his disposal.

Chelsea fan will watch some entertaining football, that's for sure.

Yeah, pretty much on the same page regarding most personnel and their positions, although I'd pick Emerson over Alonso but I could easily be wrong there.

I think it's too soon to say who and what formation Sarri will play. Too many players potentially leaving, and after all he has to use what he has at his disposal. Moses and Alonso are an excellent source of attack on the wings and it sounds like that would fit his style, even if it means dropping the 433 formation. If he actually plays two defensive mids, he might drop to 3 FBs and employ the two WBs in a 3-4-2-1 formation like Chelsea last season. Unless he played 2 DMs in a 433 at Napoli?

Plus he might test various strategies during the season before settling on a particular setup.

      1. AK ⭐
        • 13 Years

From what I've read about Sarri, he's stubborn with his gamestyle and I definitely see us moving back to a 4 man defence. He's never really played a 3 man defence in his career and now that Jorginho has come in, I'm very confident that we'll move to a 4 man defence and 3 man midfield.

It's too early for sure, but I'm just trying to make sense and figuring out what kind of team will he be playing if he had the current squad at this disposal and have included players that are very close to joining Chelsea right now and the players they will likely be replacing.

That's interesting. Total speculation but to achieve both a high press and balance in the team with 2 DMs in 433, I'd expect the RB/LB to play a role in the high press (ie the Alonsos and Moses).

Spent the last 2 days in transit, late to the party.

I think Sarri will be a great manager for Chelsea. However, I wouldn't be too hasty.
          1. The coming days look like Chelsea will be caught in transfer chaos - entirely of their own making but tough on Sarri.
          2. Sarri plays a pressing system, one that Chelsea is unused to. In this I'd look to the arrivals of Pochettino and Klopp. In both cases it took the better part of a season for their teams to click. I think Chelsea will need a year to start playing 'Sarriball'.
Another positive feature of Sarri connects with my point #1. He likes to develop young players. This ought to mean promotion for RLC. However,, in addition Chelsea have a vast army of young players permanently farmed out on loan. If Sarri finds the transfer window closes and his squad have gaps, he'll bring some of the best young things into his squad. This is exciting from an FPL perspective, but they will need time.

So for me, I'm looking at gradual development for Chelsea and won't go overboard on their assets from the start of the season.

I think Burnley could struggle this season; rotation issues with EL and price rises mean they aren't all such good value anymore.

Couple of post WC players who could miss early games. Trippier/Eriksen.

And as much as I love him, we'll have to wait and see whether Kola is nailed.

Silva I'm not sure about this season, might see more rotation (should be ok initially though), but I think Auba will have a great season.

    Take a pick

    A) Kane, Tosun, KDB, Mane, 4.5 def
    B) Aguero, Auba, Salah, 4.5 mid, 4.0 def
    C) Aguero, Tosun, Salah, Willian + 5.0 def (or two premium defenders and a cheaper mid)

Currently leaning towards A, as I will captain Kane week in week out, except when he faces a top 6 side, in which case I will captain KDB... Only worry is KDB + Kane being rested in gw 1, but I can cover that with a bench and Mane or Firmino as the vice-captain
