Best Manchester City players to sign on FPL in 2018/19 – Complete Members’ Analysis

How do Pep Guardiola’s team follow the season just gone? Manchester City cantered to their fifth league title win with five matches of the 2017/18 campaign to spare, breaking a host of records along the way.

Their run of 18 consecutive victories from August to December was the longest winning sequence in English football history, while their total of 100 points was the most ever recorded in England’s top flight.

A total of 106 goals, a goal difference of +79 and a title-winning margin of 19 points were also Premier League records.

Investment in this City side is, as was the case last season, a must from a Fantasy perspective, particularly since the release of the fixture list in June.

After a trip to the Emirates in Gameweek 1 (a fixture City won 3-0 last season, it should be said), Guardiola’s side then face all six of the most recently promoted clubs – four of whom will take on City at the Etihad.

Fantasy Premier League managers would have a strong case for using all three of their permitted slots for City players, though the fly in the ointment is that 16 of the champions’ first-team squad were on duty for their respective countries at the World Cup this summer and Guardiola’s pre-season preparations have thus been affected.

Price hikes for the likes of Raheem Sterling (£11.0m), Leroy Sane (£9.5m) and Nicolas Otamendi (£6.5m) would also prohibit widespread Fantasy investment in City’s premium assets.

    My first draft

    DDG / Boruc
    Coleman / Davies / Cedric / Tomkins / Peltier
    Mane / Sane / Kenedy / Martial / Ralls
    Aguero / Tosun / Aubameyang

Long way to go but it looks decent to me. Doubt it'll be popular here due to lack of Salah.

for a team with no Salah, I'd expect the extra 3.5m by downgrading to Mane would be well spent

not really as you can do Davies to 4.5m that rotates with Cedric, Tomkins and Peltier to give you an extra 1.5m which I'd say is good value for money given Davies isn't nailed

you could do DDG to Ederson for another 0.5m

you could do Coleman to Keane for another 0.5m

and Martial to Mata for the last 1m given they're both only going to play 2 games each anyway

so yeah that's what I think

Might be me but Palace assets look so good.

    Wan Bissaka

    Milivojevic
    Zaha

There's an option for most approaches.

The articles for the other teams show the main pictures for individuals that give away the good FPL buys. For Man City, the article image is that of the whole team.

I know it's early days, but one to keep an eye on throughout preseason...

Danny Ward (not the Liverpool one)

    Price: 4.5m
    FPL Position: Midfielder
    Team: Cardiff

    Cardiff 6-0 Tavistock
Ward came on for the final 30 minutes, replacing Madine and scored

    Bodmin 1-11 Cardiff
Ward started up top, played 90 minutes and scored a hatrick. The third was a penalty won by Harris who took two other penalties in the match. He let Ward take the 3rd penalty for his hatrick as Harris had already completed his.

Now while both oppositions are considerably weak, its worth keeping an eye on him. As a 4.5m OOP midfielder who has shown he can put away a penalty, that is certainly an exciting prospect.

At the start of last season, Ward was in and out of the team for Cardiff, mainly as a bench player. But from the end of October he seemed to have won a starting spot in Warnock's side, scoring 3 times in his 8 appearances around this time. Nothing great, but its important to note that in early December he sustained a knee injury that required operating on. This would rule him out for the rest of Cardiff's promotion-winning season.

Obviously it boils down to who Cardiff sign in the window, but with the deadline day at the first game of the season, we should have a fair idea if there's any chance of him starting judging by who they sign. At the minute they're thin up top and didn't have a proper goalscorer last year in the team.

I just checked him out on Wikipedia. Surgery ruled him out for up to 3 months, so that will have played a factor.

        https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Danny_Ward_(English_footballer)

        Cardiff City
During the 2017 summer transfer window, Rotherham accepted a £1.6 million plus add-ons bid from Cardiff City for Ward,[20] completing the move on 23 June 2017, signing a three-year deal that will last until the summer of 2020.[21] He made his debut for the club on the opening day of the 2017–18 season, during a 1–0 victory over Burton Albion as a substitute in place of Junior Hoilett.[22] Ward scored his first goal for the club at Fulham in a 1–1 draw, on 9 September.[23] Following an injury to Kenneth Zohore, Ward saw a successful run in the starting line up scoring three in six games, one of which (against Nottingham Forest) was nominated for the EFL Goal of the Month, before surgery ruled him out for up 3 months.[24][25]

Just as he start getting a run of games at the end of October, he picked up a season-ending knee injury. Seems to be coming back strong. Warnock will be watching him for sure.

At the minute it looks like he's competing with Madine for a spot. I expect Zohore to be first choice up top for now, with new signing Bobby Reid to play in attacking midfield as he did with Bristol (despite being listed as a forward in FPL).

If Warnock ever goes with two up top, there's a decent chance Ward will start

Yes he is, but anyway this lad seems like 100 percent more plausible to score than stephens, even if sometimes (or even often) comes from bench.
Regardless, wont play any of them often so not a big difference, if any at all

Potentially three transfers down the line already in Martial, Mahrez and Hughes and every few players in the same brackets (The 9 mil and 7.5 mil) .. a bit of risk imo.. Patricio as your only GK is not the best option imo. You should at least rotate him with a 4.5 Keeper.. Foster rotates well with Patricio

Don't kid yourself. Just like last year, when similar sentiments were posted, David Silva remains the player that Guardiola will point at to show the way that City will play.

KDB, Aguero and co may take the applause but that team is the Guardiola and Silva team...

Agreed. Less rubbish games where Bernardo Silva and co will step up. No way City play Chelsea and Liverpool and co without David Silva. He will remain the corner stone of the way city play.

No i'm not, he's a great player. What i'm saying is the word "playmaker" means absolutely nothing most of the time but the premier league actually has two of them who dictate the style and tempo of the whole team. They are David Silva and Eriksen.

KDB, as good as he is, doesn't actually dictate the way they play...David Silva does...The same applies to Aguero, Sane, Sterling and co...and Kane and Son at Spurs...

Peltier & Wan-Bissaka possibly. But who knows if they play!

It's more like his World Cup hangover.

Unlikely to start the first game. He's expensive. He actually looked injured in the knockout stages of the World Cup.

Plus Salah is very expensive too, and a good option. Having both kills the rest of your team.

Hard to get so expensive players in and then not captain them, so most go with just 1, and Salah seems the safer option of the 2.

I think he's fairly priced but in reality even at 13.0 Salah is still underpriced for what he could do - if he scores 5/6/7 less this season he'll still comfortably be the top scoring player.

Speroni won't play at all either because Guaita and Hennessey are starting ahead of him and given his high ownership -he'd probably receive a price fall too in the first few weeks

whereas Stek is the lowest owned keeper with a price of 4m so he's unlikely to fall (he's also flagged)

you wouldn't play Speroni over Ederson anyway I would think

Rather like my Salah-less team at the moment, first time posting a side this summer, would you guys mind giving it a rate and some feedback?

    Fabianski (Hamer)
    Alexander-Arnold Cedric Tomkins (Doherty Peltier)
    Sanchez Sane Mahrez Jota (Stephens)
    Aubameyang Aguero Tosun

    Rationale:
GK - Fabianski is my set and forget option as I along with many on here reckon he's undervalued with the likelihood of save points and improved clean sheet potential. Hamer is one of three 4.0 GKs in the game who are listed as the sole backup for their teams starter (along with Boruc and Stekelenburg. It's likely I wouldn't play a Bournemouth keeper even if they were the 4.0 starter over Fabianski given their dreadful defense and I wouldn't want Stekelenburg to take up what could be a valuable Everton spot in case they get off to a brilliant start with their fixtures and kindly priced assets.

Defense - Consider TAA a place-holder for what "premium-ish" defender I end up choosing to lead my backline. If word is out that TAA is nailed it will be him, if not a nailed Kolasinac, Lovren, or Keane will slot right in, meaning i'll have to reassess in the ample time left of preseason. Cedric I am willing to give another shot to. I don't believe Saints will be nearly as bad as they were last year and do consider him a quality player I am routinely shocked isn't a better option. Tomkins has a slight goal threat in what could be an entertaining CP side with good enough fixtures -- the price is right. Have read Doherty is the second most attacking defender in what I expect to be a top-half challenging Wolves side. The team was resolute at the back last year and only added Patricio, sign me up for a punt against weak teams. Peltier is my 4.0 of choice merely because it seems to me he is most likely to get game time which is all I could ask for at that price range, if you reckon anyone else is likelier, I am all ears. --> I understand the defense is pretty cheap and arguably weak but i've always chosen to opt for budget sensitive backlines early doors merely because even the best teams seem to leak goals early on as the season starts and also as budget enablers for what I hope is a promising attack. If Wan-Bissaka is nailed, could do Tomkins > WB and TAA > Coleman?

Midfield: I reckon Sanchez is one of the best options in the game for a punt. Potentially oop and fit as we saw today, he could be a bargain at that price if he begins the season showing the form he's been known for. If I don't add Salah then Alexis will wear my armband GW 1. Very excited for City attackers and i've chosen two more mids who haven't made the WC and thus I believe have something to prove. Not at all interested in the likes of Mane who I believe is an overrated asset compared to his pool counterparts nor Silva who I believe will be trending down as I can see heavy rotation for him sooner rather than later. Jota is my punt and as I said above I think Wolves will get off to a cracking start. With Jota potentially oop and with a pedigree of loads of goals i'm willing to take the leap of faith. Stephens is the cheapie of choice, if other suggestions you will be heard.

Forwards: Simple for the first two. I think Aguero is gonna make non owners hide behind an enormous couch this season with all the support he should have. Those early GWs look delightful. Aubameyang is class and I think wishfully Emery will revitalize Arsenal this season. Tosun is my mid-priced forward of choice though I am certainly not enamored with him as much as I am his fixtures. I figure I need someone given their schedule and Silva's attacking pedigree but this slot I have many times reconsidered and have tried to really shift the team to accomodate Firmino.

I know, i know, no Salah, Pool attackers, Chelsea, or Spurs assets but I really like the potential for points in every part of this squad I have hear. Feel free to totally disagree, I would love to hear your thoughts and advice.

Thanks in advance all, my apologies for such a long post, just got excited. Feel free to post your own teams in exchange and i'll give it a rate back!

I would rather have Salah than Sanchez in a vacuum but I think the price does not justify such a chasm between them, especially not when Alexis could lead the line to begin the season. I can have Sane and Sanchez rather than Mkhi and Salah and I just think thats too much quality to pass up

Well, the pricy players like Salah and Auba is worth the money if they are captain candidates. If you think saomeone can have better point than Salah, so I agree that u better choose him.

High price players are bad value if u dont want to give them armband.

You have very good players in your team but it seems too rigid. You want to play 3-4-3 every week with those players but you have 3 City which will be rotated for sure (at least the 2 mids) and a really poor bench. I honestly wouldnt be surprised if one of those 3 city players get rotated every week and then you have a 2 point no potential player coming on from the bench. I would prefer downgrading one of your starters (Tosun personally because I dont rate Everton) and upgrade your defense/bench a bit.

      1. Brosstan
        • 9 Years

I also think 3 top captain options is too much money in 3 players considering just 1 of them can be captained each week. I think its OK to go for Sanchez but with Auba AND Kun it gets unbalanced. You could downgrade any of those 3 and improve your bench or defense significantly.

    Pickford (Fabinaski)

    Colman- Cedric- Bailly (Tomkins, Bednarek)

    Mahrez- Sane- Willian- Walcott (Stephens)

    Kane- Firmino- Zaha

+ 0,5 in Bank when i will switch Everton players

1st i think Everton and CRY will have a great start so i am starting with 3 players from Everton .....smart or not?

Don't mind the Everton triple up, I do think Pickford isn't the best value for money especially with Fabianski on your bench. Love the defense but I don't think bednarek will play so maybe swap him. Kane I would drop unless reports say he'll make GW1, if not its your call whether to stash

I guess Pikford can have good season, but i am not so sure if he will start in GW1, so Fabianski is there. And i know about Bednaker, i ll try to fin better solution but so far 2 on bench + fabianski is enough. TY

To those spending 10.5m on a United attacker when there's a direct alternative at 7.5m - just don't do it. Don't try to be different. Salah is a god and will more than justify the price difference, and more than that you're suggesting paying over 10m for a Jose attacker. Jose 'I don't like goals' Mourinho. 2 goals and 2 assists in 12 starts under him last season for Alexis, when he'd been in great form at Arsenal and plugged right into the system. He's not miraculously going to become the top scoring player because Mourinho attackers never will. Even amongst Mourinho attackers, Martial's ppm was considerably higher. Either buy Mahrez, Sane, Martial or Salah, but just avoid Sanchez.
