Some Fantasy Premier League managers may have let England fever take over a little too much in their preparations for the new season this summer.

That’s because the ownership levels of Jordan Pickford (£5.0m), Kieran Trippier (£6.0m) and Harry Maguire (£5.5m), stand-out performers at the World Cup, have surged in the last two weeks.

Such trust may prove to be misplaced as the trio are currently in danger of missing Gameweek 1 after returning to training later than their respective team-mates.

Trippier (24.8 percent) and Maguire (21.2) are now the two most popular defenders in FPL after just two weeks of the game being open.

The pair are clearly responsible for the two percent dip in Trent Alexander-Arnold’s (£5.0m) ownership, which has pushed him from first place to third when it comes to popularity among defenders.

Marcos Alonso (£6.5m) remains on 17 percent despite his role at Chelsea jeopardised by the arrival of Maurizio Sarri.

Jan Bednarek’s spell as the most fashionable £4.0m defender has come to an end, presumably due to Southampton’s signing of Jannik Vestergaard (£5.0m). The new holder of that position is Scott Malone (£4.0m) with 11.1 percent ownership, although he appears to be the second-choice left-back behind Chris Lowë at Huddersfield.

Meanwhile, Aaron Wan-Bissaka has started both of Crystal Palace’s friendlies so far and resides in just 2.6 percent of squads.

Pickford’s rise up the charts may be the reason that David De Gea (£6.0m) has seen his lead at the top of the goalkeeper popularity contest trimmed.

The Spaniard enjoyed 34.6 percent ownership two weeks ago but now sits in just 31.6 of squads. Alternatively, the drop-off may have been caused by Jose Mourinho declaring that he was unlikely to use any World Cup players in the first few weeks of the season.

Lukasz Fabianski (£4.5m) remains in second place with 24.7 percent ownership but has lost two percent since our last check.

Just below the now third-place Pickford is Ederson (£5.5m) whose ownership remains stable at 17.4 percent, while Nick Pope (£5.0m) has lost two percent.

In midfield, Mohamed Salah (£13.0m) remains comfortably the most popular player on the game, in 46.5 percent of squads.

Kevin De Bruyne (£10.0m) is in second place with 27.1 percent ownership with the much cheaper Henrikh Mkhitaryan (£7.0m) is the third most popular (21.4).

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s (£11.0m) strong start to pre-season, scoring five goals in the first three matches, has him climbing up the forwards charts. He is now in fourth place with 24.2 percent of managers backing him for Gameweek 1, dislodging Marko Arnautovic (£7.0m).

Top two Roberto Firmino (£9.5m) and Harry Kane (£12.5m) seem to have been the most fashionable sacrifice for managers getting the Arsenal man. Both of them were on roughly 39 percent ownership two weeks ago, they now have 37.8 and 33.6 respectively.

Ospina is on his way out from looks of it. Turkey or Spain seem the main destination for him.
Cech vs Leno at moment, I couldn't say. Leno did make a bit of a howler during pre-season, so not done himself any early favours.

Well, I like to think that I’m gay in my art and straight in my life. Although, I’m also gay in my life up to the point of intercourse, and then you could say I’m straight. So I guess it depends on how you value Richarlison.

The entertainment for this evening is not new, you've seen this entertainment through and through you have seen your birth, your life, your death....you may recall all the rest. So it all depends on him playing for Silva. How's the rest?

    Ryan (Steele)

    Mendy Robertson Douglas (Tomkins) (Wan-B)
    Mahrez Sigurdsson Maddison Hughes (Ralls)
    Aguero Auba Firmino

Thoughts on this team? Solid defence and although heavy up top still a flexible team with 1.5m ITB which could upgrade a mid to a returning WC player

Sane, but been leaning towards Mahrez for the 0.5. Comparing the two, Sane comes out on top, but only just. Have to remember Mahrez was playing in the weaker side and still managed to do all that. Hopefully pre-seaon decides for me.

Not sure being in a weaker side has that much to do with it. Gylfi suffers when going to a bigger club, Andy Carroll and Charlie Adam did nothing after leaving Toon and Blackpool; Milner was a superstar at Villa but did little afterwards. Oftentimes being a big fish in a small pond helps a lot.

Maddison. Diabate is still mostly a potential player, Gray seems to be chaff for us, Nacho could be good if he gets gametime. Maddison will probably be a great buy for us (fingers crossed)

Due to lack of funds - Ryan/Button combination at 8.5.

Decent keeper playing from a pretty defensive team, with a good penalty save record.

Pelligrini loves to attack, so I'm not sure how the Hammers defence will be. The fixtures are bad too, and I don't know when I'll WC.

Brighton sit deep, so Ryan gets lots of low percentage shots to save. Amazing pts total last season for a 4.5m player. He's been underpriced this year.

Currently on Pickford and Stekelenburg. Don't think I'll want any Everton defenders, one more spot should be enough if I want any of the mids or forwards.

Happy enough with the fixtures and save potential even in the tough games and not having to look at any big hauls left on the bench.

If I change and go with two 4.5m options one of them will probably be Foster.

Martial & Shaw together seems like a step too far for me unless you genuinely blieve one of them to be almost certainly nailed. Bench looks pretty weak to deal with any injuries or rotation, but other than that, it's a nice team imo 🙂

I'm not watching that because I'm on data, but if it's a highlights reel it means squat. I'm sure you could find a decently hype highlight reel of Tom Carrol

He looks like one of those players who needs to put a lot of effort into getting power on the ball, the whole body needs to be involved with maximum backlift. The ball doesn't ping off his boot as it does for players like Arnautovic, for example. I'm sure he has a lot of control which makes him a good playmaker, assister and occasional long finesse-shooter, but doesn't look enough like a potential goalscorer for me to have him in my team.

I could be entirely wrong, but from the eye test, I'm not convinced yet.

Doesn't negate my thoughts about his ability though. There are other 5.0s who will play at least as far forwards as him, and otherwise you don't have to own a 5.0 midfielder 🙂

I don't think he's a bad option, but he doesn't fill me with enough confidence, personally.

Played our u21s Vs Fenerbache and in the 2nd half Vs Lyon, our first team held them 0-0 until HT.
It's preseason, I'd honestly rather we were playing good sides than Austrian 4th division teams.

Yeah we need several still. Hopefully Mitro and he'll fit in easily. Close to signing a GK apparently, and I'd like Targett and Piazon back. Even then I reckon we still need 2 or 3 more.

I've got no idea how we're gonna do in the PL to be honest. We dominated teams in the championship and it depends whether we can do the same to teams like Burnley, Brighton, Newcastle etc. We should finish above Cardiff at least so just need to top 2 others 😆

Nah, I'll be honest. Just never been convinced by everyone going for the likes of Ralls/Neves/Cairney as promoted sides will get few attacking returns as is, if they arent wingers or No 10s they probably will get very few returns, set-pieces or not (Tom Carrol may be worse than this guy, but in terms of FPL returns I expect similar)

Hi i might change arsenal defender to someone else not sure yet. Had to go a bit cheap on defence but i think i have got value. I think perriera will be underated by many.Thats the whole point you need to change to new to see how they get on. I am happy with just aubameyang up top. But if he dont do it i can always bring in firminho. I think kieta is going to be awesome. Roll on the new season i am excited lol.

      A for me.
B can outscore A (possibly by some margin) in first couple of weeks, but B *probably* gives you 3 fires to put out soon thereafter.
Firmino looks like a guaranteed 180. Could be a a season keeper or could be readily swapped to Laca (or some transferred in mid-premium striker) if he takes off or downgraded to an emergent 7 or under striker. Yes, there’s the WC effect on Spurs, but Eriksen also looks a season keeper. Nailed on. Reliable. Has outscored KDB last 2 seasons. Mahrez will be subject to rotation eventually, but will get a few weeks run to start, and can be swapped for in form premium mid if mins start to suffer.

Could consider B if you want to wildcard early.

So last year I had my best season by a way and something I'd attribute that to was looking after team value over points hits in the first quarter or so. Obviously there was a lot of luck just getting on the good bandwagons early but do people have tips in setting up a team where few players are likely to have early price drops, with a couple of slow burn price rises, to free me up to just chase price rises for a bit?

    Thanks.

Price rises were as slow as can be last year compared to previous seasons. I am astonished you managed to make anything from them. Chwck out fplstatistics website; they normally are pretty good at sussing the algorithim governing rises/falls.

I suspect there were occasions when certain players were protected to appease the casuals.
Way more volatile at the start of the season.

It’s anyone’s guess. I much preferred a volatile market since those that played the value game were able to get TV’s of 110m plus which made for a big advantage.

In your opinion if you want to have a balanced team for the first few GWs of the season

Who is the best Liverpool player to have out of Firmino and Salah

    and

Who is the best Man City player to have out of Aguero and Sane

    Any ideas would be welcomed

In terms of pts per game, Salah and Aguero are way way out in front of the other two. Those guys are pts demons.

I just get players like that in, and find value and balance in the other spots. They're easy to transfer out, but difficult to get in.

Those in the know about Sarri, which players do you think will thrive under him?

Emerson, Hazard (arguably a must have if he stays), Morata, RW (think Willian is gone), Golovin (if he joins).
