Some Fantasy Premier League managers may have let England fever take over a little too much in their preparations for the new season this summer.

That’s because the ownership levels of Jordan Pickford (£5.0m), Kieran Trippier (£6.0m) and Harry Maguire (£5.5m), stand-out performers at the World Cup, have surged in the last two weeks.

Such trust may prove to be misplaced as the trio are currently in danger of missing Gameweek 1 after returning to training later than their respective team-mates.

Trippier (24.8 percent) and Maguire (21.2) are now the two most popular defenders in FPL after just two weeks of the game being open.

The pair are clearly responsible for the two percent dip in Trent Alexander-Arnold’s (£5.0m) ownership, which has pushed him from first place to third when it comes to popularity among defenders.

Marcos Alonso (£6.5m) remains on 17 percent despite his role at Chelsea jeopardised by the arrival of Maurizio Sarri.

Jan Bednarek’s spell as the most fashionable £4.0m defender has come to an end, presumably due to Southampton’s signing of Jannik Vestergaard (£5.0m). The new holder of that position is Scott Malone (£4.0m) with 11.1 percent ownership, although he appears to be the second-choice left-back behind Chris Lowë at Huddersfield.

Meanwhile, Aaron Wan-Bissaka has started both of Crystal Palace’s friendlies so far and resides in just 2.6 percent of squads.

Pickford’s rise up the charts may be the reason that David De Gea (£6.0m) has seen his lead at the top of the goalkeeper popularity contest trimmed.

The Spaniard enjoyed 34.6 percent ownership two weeks ago but now sits in just 31.6 of squads. Alternatively, the drop-off may have been caused by Jose Mourinho declaring that he was unlikely to use any World Cup players in the first few weeks of the season.

Lukasz Fabianski (£4.5m) remains in second place with 24.7 percent ownership but has lost two percent since our last check.

Just below the now third-place Pickford is Ederson (£5.5m) whose ownership remains stable at 17.4 percent, while Nick Pope (£5.0m) has lost two percent.

In midfield, Mohamed Salah (£13.0m) remains comfortably the most popular player on the game, in 46.5 percent of squads.

Kevin De Bruyne (£10.0m) is in second place with 27.1 percent ownership with the much cheaper Henrikh Mkhitaryan (£7.0m) is the third most popular (21.4).

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s (£11.0m) strong start to pre-season, scoring five goals in the first three matches, has him climbing up the forwards charts. He is now in fourth place with 24.2 percent of managers backing him for Gameweek 1, dislodging Marko Arnautovic (£7.0m).

Top two Roberto Firmino (£9.5m) and Harry Kane (£12.5m) seem to have been the most fashionable sacrifice for managers getting the Arsenal man. Both of them were on roughly 39 percent ownership two weeks ago, they now have 37.8 and 33.6 respectively.

Which of these would you prefer for 3rd mid and 4th defender in a 433 (the 0.5 difference is only being spent on the bench):

    A) Douglas and Jota
    B) Doherty and Ramsey

What combo would you suggest at 12m then?

    The case for Alisson Becker.

Now, this wasn’t an option for me as I originally had de Gea + 3 other Liverpool players but I think it’s an avenue worth exploring.

    The Clean Sheet Potential

Liverpool kept 17 clean sheets last season – only bettered by both Manchester clubs. I can only see this number increasing now that i) Alisson is an upgrade Karius/Mignolet, ii) van Dijk will have a full season as opposed to half a season and iii) Fabinho is a specialist defensive midfielder brought in to shield the back 4 further. Given Liverpool’s continual attacking threat, most of the lower sides ‘parked the bus’ and didn’t attempt to attack a vulnerable defence – especially at Anfield. This is a trend we’ve seen with Manchester City and there’s not much to suggest teams will change their approach against both sides.

    Points Per Match Trend

This surprised me when I saw it. Since Loris Karius returned between the sticks around the turn of the year, no starting goalkeeper averaged more points per match than the German – 4.6 PPM. This coincided with van Dijk’s arrival in January, and saw Karius rack up points on a consistent basis without many of us taking notice. If we take Karius’ numbers and apply them across a 38 game season then we would be looking at 175 points – more than any GK scored last season. Imagine this with Alisson – a far better keeper who has other ways of picking up points.

    The Assist Potential

Yep, I reckon Alisson has assist potential. He likes to start counter attacks, has quick distribution and is quite accurate in finding his midfielders/attackers.
Here’s a clip of an assist Alisson got vs Inter Milan:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aGmeDyTiuPM
    Here’s a clip exampling his ability to start attacks: (0:12, 0:57, 1:18, 1:34, 2:31, 2:35, 3:51)
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GozCvK5osHs
Imagine that distribution to Salah, Firmino and Mane. Surely he’s going to get an assist at some point?

    The Bonus Point Potential

Despite being very risky in one-on-one situations, Alisson made 0 errors leading to goals last season. His comfort and reassurance on the ball, coupled with his pass completion (81%) and distribution accuracy (83%), could see him regularly be amongst the bonus points too. We’ve seen the effect of having GK’s who are bonus point magnets and Alisson may just fall into this category.

    The Overall Picture

Alisson comes in at 5.5m – the same price as Ederson, .5m cheaper than de Gea and 1m more expensive than Fabianski. Alisson will more than justify his price in my opinion and the above factors may see him be amongst the top GK’s this season, or the top scoring one. The only question I have is whether the third Liverpool spot could be better used elsewhere – I’m looking at you Robertson (6m). Robertson is going to score very well this season too to be fair, but the idea of having a nailed Liverpool defence option for .5 cheaper with a wide range of ways to accumulate points, pulls me closer to the Alisson camp. I’m a little uncomfortable with Moreno lurking around – many don’t rate him but it’s easy to forget how good he was before injury last season. He is close to signing a new contract (acc to Liverpool Echo) and surely that would be on the compromise of him featuring more often. I do think Robertson is fairly nailed for the start of the season, but Klopp is big on rotation once the fixtures pile up. Alisson could be a pick and forget type of pick, with the .5 being used elsewhere.

Alisson Becker. He’s in my team and maybe he might find his way to yours.

He won't be in mine as I shall be opting for a Liverpool defender with attacking potential

This is my problem with owning him.

Robertson has more assist, goal, and bonus point potential.
        Salah is a given.

While I haven’t filled my third Liverpool spot, I think their attack is too good, and there’ll be another gem in there. Firmino at 9.5 could be a steal. Interested in seeing how Keita turns out.

And if not, I’d rather have that control and flexibility early in the season. I can always turn to Allison if he looks like he’s worth it in the near future, but I’d hate to have my balls in a vice, having to get rid of Allison or Robertson in order to fund Firmino who is (hypothetically) scoring for fun.

The issue for me is that Salah + either Firmino or Mané at a whopping £22.5m is never going to deliver value on the scale we saw last season.

I also don't think you can justify a Firmino Mane double up as neither are genuinely proven captaincy options.

Salah+Robertson costs us 19m, more or less the cost of Salah + Firmino/Mané last season. I wouldn't be hugely surprised if S+R delivers similar level of value to last season's favoured double up.

You can't ignore that defenders will generally offer more value than midfielders regardless. Comparing the value of Robertson and Mané/Firmino is pointless. With the Mané and Firmino comparison some will at least make a formation swap depending on whom they pick.

I'm personally leaning more towards a triple up with RSM until more players return from the world cup and Arsenal's fixtures clear up.

one would expect rotation in that department. TAA most likely against lower sides as he is a creative force, while Clyne is more assured defensively and could end up playing vs the better sides and there will be a general rotation based on fixture congestion etc.

With Salah gobbling funds, a triple up with Robertson and Alisson (or TAA) is of more interest to me this season than incorporating costly Bobby or Sadio.

Bobby scared me if Klopp change his system.

With Keita and Fabinho arrive, Klopp can change Bobby to be natural no 9 player, not one of the front three anymore.

            1. Keita and Fabinho arrive. Can both play CDM.

            2. Mane have shirt number 10. Maybe he will play in 'the hole'.

            3. Shaq arrived. He can play at the left, Mane's position a season before.

So if this happen, Bobby's point will 'plummet', and maybe Salah points will drop.

            Its still wait and see.

Many of my drats earlier dont have Bobby, but now he got that place. Can changes however .

Nice write up. You do make a good case for him. At the same time, owning premium goalies unbalances my team annoyingly from what I like right now, and Robbo may just outscore him, plus I have a good feeling aboit Fab. One to watch.

Alisson joins Keita in the “potential good premier league player, but non-FPL option” bucket for me Clive.

I think he’s made unselectable by the 3 player limit. VVD, Robertson are probably well worth the extra 0.5 for their attacking involvement. And two of Salah, Mané, Firmino etc.

‪At £13m, Salah is way more expensive than last season, and while it was suicidal to go without him last year, I can see the argument for it this season - you could do so much more with that extra money to the rest of your team.‬

Salah could deliver, you could be Salahless, but have a much more rounded squad and still do well; even better than those with a Salah (c) 15x2 pointer.

Let’s say instead of Salah, you have Mane and an extra £3.5m. That money could be used as single upgrade to your weakest starter (eg. Deulofeu to Mahrez. Mane + Mahrez (c) could arguably outscore Deulofeu + Salah over time). Or you could spread the money amongst your five defenders to give you an extra couple of clean sheets a week.

I don’t think going without Salah is absurd as people think. That said, I’m going with Salah.

Assuming total points over the season just for an example...
      Salah(300*2) + Deul(100) =700
      Does easily outscore
      Mahrez(200*2) + mane(200) =600

      Importance of captaincy.
But I don't personally believe salah can repeat 300 points again this season. More rounded Liverpool team this season.

      1. TheDonald
        • 7 Years
        7 years, 4 months ago

Not easily, I said arguably 🙂

Maybe Salah scores 275 this season. Maybe Mahrez scores 225. Then they’re even.

I’m just putting forward the point that it might not be the best way to go, and it’s not completely irrational to spread your money around, pick the best captain for that particular week, and still compete with teams with Salah.

Last season, no chance because Salah was so cheap for his points output.

This year, there are a lot more sacrifices you need to make elsewhere.

          • 10 Years

Nice point. I guess in the end it comes down to whether we have a regular performing cheap mid/forward to compliment salah. If someone like jota/maddison/sess is amongst the points in the first few games of the season, then it's a lot easier and better to have one of them and salah instead of two 9/9.5 options. But. If they don't perform as well, going with two 9/9.5 options would be great.

The price is designed to be prohibitive.

Salah less owners will still have to hide behind the sofa every weekend when Pool play because of the sheer damage he can do in any one game.

In the same way, if you don’t own Kane you have a similar problem and it’s nigh on impossible to really have both of them.

So, one way or the other, you pretty much have to go without one of them this season.

Those without Salah can cover and hope the replacements will deliver and that the captain choices they make will pay off.

Makes it much more exciting this season because if Salah was £10.5m everyone would have him.

Could happen with Shaw (5.0), maybe with Emerson (5.5) Christensen (5.5), Kolasinac (5.0), and even one of the Man City centre backs (Kompany, Laporte, Stones all at 5.5) could break through and become 'nailed on' this year.

But it seems like Spurs' defenders are just as prone to rotation, but still have the 'nailed on' price tags of 6.0 each.

There isn't much reason to go without considering WHU is the best (and arguably only good) captaincy fixture. After that things change.

I do prefer the 3-4-3 Flynny as there are some cracking 7 and below strikers. Arnie's fixtures are stiff until gw10 so maybe someone with a good run 1-9? Looks good.

        Sane - Mane - Ramsey - Richarlison - Stephens

        Aguero - Firmino - Tosun

Why not a 4.0 with DeGea?
Kompany too injury prone stay away
          Bailly not nailed re consider.
Zaha over Tosun as you have Richarlson?

Think I'm going Mane - back in training before Firmino and easier to swap to Eriksen/City midfielder if required.

Would you rather have a) Lacazette and Fraser or b) Quaner and Sanchez?

Have a little nibble on this:

        Begovic

        Bailly/Robbo/Cedric

        Sanchez/Mane/Jota/Sane

        Aguero/Tosun/Zaha

        Subs: Boruc, Cairney, Tomkins, Peltier

Feeling a little settled now my teams coming together somewhat - Firmino up top feels a way to go but it cripples my budget for a decent 4th mid - feedback welcome to point me in right direction.

        Foster (Fab)

Coleman Shaw Robbo (Cedric / W-B)

        Salah Sane Jota Cairney (Stephens)

        Kun Firmino Tosun

You could bump Cairney to Rich by Sane>DSilva and Tosun>Wood

How about Mane instead of Firmino and switching to a 4-4-2?

          Firmino could become Sorloth.
