Chris Wood (£6.5m) has the opportunity to be a cost-effective third striker in Fantasy Premier League this season.

His underlying data suggests that a clear run in the team without injuries that restricted him in 2017/18 can bring out his best.

In our latest Great Expectations piece we assess the case for trusting Wood with a place in our squads.

TOP CLARET

Our recent research into the Burnley squad showed that Wood is the club’s most dangerous goal threat for 2018/19. In the most recent campaign, no Clarets player averaged more shots in the box per game (1.5), touched the ball as many times in the penalty area (3.1) or had a higher goal conversion (25.6) than the New Zealand international. Ashley Barnes (£6.0m) was the only one of his team-mates to average more shots, but Wood still outscored him 10 league goals to nine.

STRONG FINISH

In the back-end of last season, Wood was boasting form that kept pace with some of the Premier League’s heavy hitters. After recovering from a knee injury to return in Gameweek 29, only Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.0m) and Jamie Vardy (£9.0m) found the net more often than the Burnley man’s six times. Even more impressive was that Wood achieved that feat in fewer starts too, his seven comparing with Vardy’s nine and Aubameyang’s 10.

Over the aforementioned period, Wood ranked seventh for shots, was joint third for efforts on target and joint-fourth for goal conversion among players who had taken at least 10 shots. But crucially, only Aubameyang was afforded more big chances out of forwards.

CLEAR RUN

Wood’s first season at Turf Moor did not exactly run smoothly. Two injuries throughout the campaign limited him to just 24 starts, but a break over the summer has helped him get back to full fitness – in time to assist Sam Vokes (£5.5m) against Aberdeen in the Europa League. Meanwhile, Barnes has struggled with blisters over pre-season allowing Wood to string together some early consistency in the team.

Having a full season of starts in Lancashire should unlock Wood’s potential, considering his minutes per goal data from 2017/18 was so impressive. He averaged a goal every 163.3 minutes, almost the same as Vardy’s 162.8, who finished as the second-highest scoring forward in FPL. Romelu Lukaku (£11.0m) and Roberto Firmino (£9.5m) were among the bigger names below Wood in this respect, with 179.3 and 185.1 minutes per goal respectively.

The only thing to be wary of is that Burnley’s involvement in Europe could trigger more rotation at Turf Moor than before, although manager Sean Dyche tends to avoid it where he can.

RUB OF THE GREEN

Burnley have a very favourable start to the 2018/19 season when it comes to the fixtures, which can often prove a factor in having a good overall season. With the exception of Manchester United in Gameweek 4, every match in the first eight Gameweeks for the Clarets is against a team that finished outside of the Premier League’s top 10 last season. Watford, Bournemouth and Huddersfield will all come to Turf Moor, as will United, while trips to Southampton, Fulham, Wolves and Cardiff could all yield goals for Burnley and Wood.

Mane to start. Then, you can shift to KDB or Mahrez or Silva once City’s starters are settled.

Think a mid of sane salah Pedro(who if plays where he has been and starts is a bargain in that system) and Richarlson or some other 6.5 is good for team balance too. The only mids you will want that are more expensive than 9.5 are Kdb, you've already got sane, Haz, you've got Pedro and highly unlikely Sanchez at 10.5, cause they'll have one two goals a game I think.

I think that's alright. Would consider Mane -> Eriksen/Son (the latter would give you an extra £1m) as you have ample scouse cover in Salah.

I'm also starting with money in the bank. Here's mine:

      Pickford, Speroni
Alonso, Mee, van Dijk, Maguire, Schlupp
      Salah, Pedro, Son, Richarlison, Masuaku
      Zaha, Tosun, Andone
£5.5m ITB (for Tosun -> Kane in GW2)

Tosun to Kane GW2 just seems dumb... if Kane starts GW1 he's going to have more a chance of scoring against Newcastle than Tosun against Wolves. Firmino to Kane would be better as he has a better chance of scoring than Tosun too.

Defence is weak, 2 4mils is risky, need to strengthen. Also i think having 2 untested mids (cairney/neves) also risky. £ itb though so room for improvement

Mane took another penalty while Salah was on the pitch. Mata looks good relative to the rest of his team. Perreira scored a great freekick and could get himself a GW1 start after another good performance. Sturridge looked sharp.

My first draft this year! 3-5-2 formation! How does it look?

    Ederson l 4.0
    Robertson l Shaw l Kolasinac l Cedric l 4.0
    Mané l Mahrez l Sané l Eriksen l Willian
    Firmino l Tosun l 4.5

0.0 ITB, Not sure about Tosun and Willian. And may go Silva instead of Mahrez.

Things never go as planned, but if they do: Eriksen > Mhiki (or other 7.0) and Tosun > Lacazette by GW3.

Keep an eye out for Mahrez's crock suffered last night, especially in the face of a great performance from Bernardo Silva. Would avoid Mkhi but good idea.

Personally, I love the look of Burnley's opening 8 fixtures (except Man. Utd). Maybe think about someone like Mee, Tarkowski or Wood.

Possibly over thinking this, advice welcome!

    Alisson / 4.0
Bailly Mendy Cédric / Schlupp 4.0
Salah Mané Bernardo Richarlison / Stephens
    Auba Arnautovic Zaha

If Zaha goes elsewhere and Ings goes to CP then I'd drop Zaha for Ings and have the 1.5 itb for Auba > Kane

    1. Scratch
      • 16 Years

Wouldn't touch Ings with a bargepole initially, definite case of a wait and see.
There's a few too many gambles in your squad that could force you into an early wildcard. Or you could turn out to be a genius.

West Ham will be a goldmine this season, but apart from Arnie or one of their $4.5 defs it's impossible to say who to go with given their fixtures.
Seems like they will open with a front 3 of Arnie up front, Yarmolenko right and Felipe left. All good players so it's a lottery.

If Nobel gets displaced then Arnautovic with pens would be an easy choice.

Might be flat out having 3 playing defenders in GW1.
Kamara looks useless now with Mitrovic signed.
