FPL Question Time – Spending big in defence, end of forwards and Arsenal fixtures

Our panel of Fantasy Premier League managers are back to answer more questions, this time ahead of Gameweek 3.

We may have one Gameweek 2 match left to play, with Crystal Palace hosting Liverpool in Monday Night Football, but there are still plenty of talking points.

Not least that of how much money to spend in defence, how best to cover an unpredictable Manchester City attack and the upcoming good fixtures Arsenal are about to enjoy.

Once again, we had an overwhelming response to our request for questions. Unfortunately, we can only answer a handful each week but keep your queries coming in for the rest of the season.

Here’s a reminder of who is on the panel for your Gameweek 3 Question Time:

Lee from FPL Family – One half of the popular married couple who play FPL together and run a YouTube channel.

Simon March – Winner of FPL in 2014/15.

Ben Crabtree – Winner of FPL in 2016/17.

QUESTION ONE – SIMON MARCH

Should we be giving up on forwards and putting that extra cash into having at least four premium wing-backs? I’m thinking of getting Robertson and Alonso to partner Mendy who I already own.

Simon: “After two weeks of watching the likes of Mendy, Robertson and Alonso marauding forward, getting goals and assists while also chipping in with the odd clean sheet, it’s pretty tempting to go big at the back.

“It’s hard to argue that, right now, 6-6.5m spent on a defender doesn’t yield better value than the same amount spent on a forward.

“However, one challenge is that while you can get decent value from a budget defender, you can currently get almost no value from a budget forward.

“If it takes a 4.5m forward to afford an additional 6m+ defender, that’s a big collective outlay on what is, effectively, one active player.

“It might improve your first eleven but it could also substantially reduce your squad’s strength in depth, increasing your exposure to rotation and reducing your ability to adapt to changes in fixtures and form.

“You could go without a premium forward but, as Aguero demonstrated on Sunday that this, in itself, can be a huge risk.

“A premium defence might be a viable strategy, but it has its trade-offs to take into account.

“Also, it only takes a week for things to change in FPL so I’d be wary of writing-off forwards this early in the season.”

QUESTION TWO – BEN CRABTREE

Given their run of fixtures I currently have three Man City attackers (Bernardo Silva, Sterling and Aguero) – is this too much given possible rotation and the cost of the investment overall?

Ben: “I see it as a necessity to have three Man City players so that if they turn it on, as it looks like they will often, you maximise your chance for a share of the points.

“It looks like the build-up to Pep Guardiola’s team sheet is destined to cause palpitations but the stress can be reduced with maximum coverage.

“Aguero, Sterling and Bernardo Silva is a lot of money and the value of the outstanding Mendy, probably one of the more secure starters, means you should prioritise him pretty much over all other transfers.

“Aguero has to stay in your squad. Sterling looks the most sensible to remove given his omission against Huddersfield and the extra expense.

“However, he will come back in the team at some point and does have the potential to be a great explosive differential compared to Bernardo Silva who looks more susceptible to small scores in big wins.

“The safe move is probably Sterling to Hazard and get Mendy as your third City player. The ‘in it to win it’ move would be keep Sterling and change Bernardo Silva to Mkhitaryan.

“Rotation is a huge problem for us and owning great players that are certain starters is ideal. One or two rotation risks is okay, but many more and every week you leave yourself open to a disaster week.

“I don’t like the idea of a strong squad of 15 to cover many risky players due to too much money on the bench. £4.5m defenders can come to the rescue with potentially 6 points entering the fray.

“Throw in an element of attacking capability and the ceiling points potential is higher than most 5.5m mids.”

QUESTION THREE – LEE FROM FPL FAMILY

Who are the best Arsenal players to fit into your side with their upcoming fixtures so good? It’s tricky with lots of other in-form options in the early Gameweeks. For me, the only spots that could be a straight swap are Pickford (for Cech/Leno) and Aguero (for Auba/Laca), as I don’t feel like ditching any of Mendy, Robertson, Alonso, Salah, Mane, Bernardo, Richarlison or Zaha. What would you do?

Lee: “I was not at all convinced by Arsenal defensively against either Man City or Chelsea. Emery is asking them to play out from the back and they just don’t have the personnel to do it right now – Cech in particular.

“In attack though, Aubameyang is class. He hasn’t shown it yet – but he will.

“If like many though, getting him in means losing Aguero, I would be sticking with the in-form City man.

“The one player who does look good for Arsenal so far is Henrikh Mkhitaryan. If you can fit him in among those other big names, get him in.

“Otherwise, keep a watching brief and potentially be prepared to switch out the more expensive Mané or Bernardo Silva if the Arsenal man shows some serious form.

That's fairly unanimous guys, thank you. Will mean I enjoy watching city a lot more.

Only downside is that with Ederson (& Aguero) I have no flexibility to buy in City Mids but right now I'm not sure I want any one in particular having suffered with Sane for 2 GWs.

Fixtures up till GW10 or so are great. Just a gamble whether he starts or not. But they’ve lost both games so far so I’m hoping he will. If he doesn’t start next GW I’ll have to get rid I think

As a neutral I'd probably predict something like 1-1 or 1-2 to Liverpool. Maybe that's wishful thinking because I don't have Salah but I think it will be a tight, close match.

Regardless of who I support, Palace are excellent defensively these days. Plus they are Liverpool’s bogey team. Problem only really lies in the fact that Salah can finish from outside the box.

      I would agree with this.
He was awful against City...although I think Ozil is more likely to make way for Lacazette to start the next game.

He is not. Ozil and Auba are 2 of 3, Mkhi or Laca 1/2 + some low minutes players over there. Need to change formation to find place for all 4.

I myself said the same thing yesterday but took the gamble on him because he hasn't been subbed yet and the only other person to play in his position was Nelson. So unless there's a change of formation I think he'll start.

Neves -> Maddison if you want a differential or Bailly -> Robbo or Fimino -> Aub ( if Arsenal starts scoring )

I can't help feeling that the 1st time these teams full of Expensive Defenses either blanks or returns very little for a couple weeks where the mid price mids/fwd hit well there will be a lot of people jumping to ship them out.

    Don't get me wrong, I have a couple 1x6, 1x5.5, 1x5

I just feel the heavy backline comes under more scrutiny if it doesnt reap rewards than you would say mid-price mids that does the same.

Maybe it's just a psychological thing. I see a lot of Mendy + Alonso + Robbo + PVA etc.
Id feel like I was hedging my bets a lot on these guys keeping form up.

100%. I get the points side of it. SOme folk breaking their banks to get the likes of Alonso or Mendy in.

I'm sitting pretty points wise with a more balanced team
At least I think so. 157 overall with 4 to play tonight.

When I was watching Mendy I couldnt believe it, he is that good. Him and Alonso/Robbo/Trippier and few others will defo outscore many "good" attackers.

As I said, I'm not saying dont pick any. I'm saying dont pick them all.
I have Robertson etc. But I'm not finding it urgent to have Mendy in - I have Ederson for example.

I see you have Mendy currently. Are you going to push on and upgrade TAA and get Alonso in at the expense of other areas? WC looming? Your score hasn't suffered.

The thing with the premium defenders from a top 4/6 club is that they will almost definitely get about 13-15 clean sheets over the season just by being a regular starter. Mendy/Robertson/Davies/Alonso look like they will get regular attacking returns to go on top of the cleanies. It's hard for the similar priced mids/forwards to keep up. Some weeks will be all 1/2 pointers but over the season these look like point magnets

No I know. As I said above Im not saying have none. I have Robbo and I have Luiz (who is a lesser premium).
It's more the teams absolutely stacked.

    6. MaxiRobriguez

Agree. I've kept the money in my squad balanced despite early pressure to move to a more expensive backline. If anything, I will be downgrading my Mendy-Robertson-AWB-Cedric-Peltier options in the near future if TAA nails his spot - easy switch from Robbo to TAA then, especially if latter stays on free kicks.

Thing about a lot of people going for Aguero-Ings-Zaha front line is that getting in Kane or Auba will be impossible without either:
      1) Wildcarding
      2) Selling Salah
      3) Taking at least a -4 (even with 2 FTs).

I'm happy to ignore Alonso for now. The only absolutely must have defender is Mendy because he pretty much plays as a winger in a Man City side that score loads and concede few.

i do agree with this. I'll leave Alonso out of the equation as well. But mendy may have to be on the radar for me.

I'm happy to admit that the heavy backline tactic is working. My question is more a wondering what happens if and when it fails folk.

I think it's just a change of mindset like you say. I already had what I would call a premium defence of Robbo, Mendy & PVA ( along with Kabasele and W-B) but used 2 FT on Sat night to do Kabasele & King to Alonso & Kamara. Still have the likes of Salah, Mane, Bilva, Richarlison, Aguero and Arnie, so can still have balance.

Wanted to write a little bit about team structure which I feel is really heavily overlooked in general.

A lot of people are making double transfers that downgrade to the likes of Ings and Kamara up top. There's a pretty big issue with this. If one of the big strikers starts firing and you want to jump on, your team structure won't allow for it without more hits.

What happens if Auba hits a brace next week? You're gonna want him in and there's just no way it's going to happen with your midfield spread on mid options and then Ings up top.

Likewise with defense and putting a lot there. People gutting their forwards for Alonso who yes, is good, but what if Zaha starts firing? Or Mitrovic? Again, you're stuck if you have a frontline of Aguero, Kamara, Wilson. Midfield is also a pain too. Hazard is just not going to be in anyone's teams because people can't rearrange their midfield with 2 transfers even.

Keeping fluid slots at each position is really helpful. Which is why I tend to prefer high and low rather and a whole bunch of middles. So like 11.0 and 7.0 rather than x2 9.0. There's also the fact that you have to think about what you're giving up instead of just raw value. Yeah, Alonso at 6.6 is gonna outscore a 6.5m striker, but will you really be losing much by going for a 5.5m def + 7.0 fwd instead of Alonso and Ings?

    1. StoichkovFPL
      • 8 Years
      5 years, 8 months ago

You cant have all. Even when I have Aguero, Firmino, Arnie when Auba score a brace I wont get him.

      1. Camzy
        • Fantasy Football Scout Member
        • 13 Years
        5 years, 8 months ago

Yes. But the point is, you want to have flexibility to switch. At 5.5m, Ings is one of a kind. If he gets injured or what not, you have 0 options to replace him. At 7.0m though, you can switch between, Tosun, Mitro, Zaha, Arnie etc.

Paying that little more is worth it. Generally, you want every slot in your team to have viable single transfer alternatives and if not, they're Salah or other evergreen keeps.

        1. StoichkovFPL
          • 8 Years

That is actually true and as you see I dont have that kind of attackers. Appart from 5th mid fodder my cheapiest attacker is 6.5

If You have enough midprices, with 2 FT is easy to make premium+low cost.

      1. MaxiRobriguez
        • 8 Years
        5 years, 8 months ago

It's not if you're trying to move Ings to Kane.

If you want to downgrade a premium defender because you have three of them, then the most you'll get is 2m (as you'll want a playing defender to replace them and that comes at 4.5). Ings+£2m = £5m short for Kane.

It'll take 3 or 4 transfers to juggle things about if your squad cost is unbalanced. I find the general rule of two premiums in defence, two in midfield and two attack, flanked by other midprice and cheap options work well.

        1. gergin
          • 8 Years

If i have midprices , I woldn`t have Ings at all. May be Tosun or Zaha.

I always build my team using a structured template. I don't know how people can do it any other way.

      I near enough have 2x 4.5 defenders, 1x 5.0 & 1x premium.
      1x 4.5 mid, 2x 6.5, 1x 9.0 & 1x premium or maybe 2.
      Then 1x premium striker, 1x 9.0ish striker and then a 6.5 forward.

So much flexibility to make transfers always reaps rewards.

      1. MaxiRobriguez
        • 8 Years

        Same.
        4.5 (4.0)
        6.0, 6.0, 4.5 (4.0), (4.0)
        13, 7.5, 6.5, 5.5, (5.0)
        11, 9.5, 7.0

One transfer can buy me any player.

I think Ings has greater potential to keep up with the 7mil forwards than a 5.5mil defender has of keeping up with Alonso.

Of course the biggest caveat with Ings is his injury record, but if fit he'll get plenty game time this season and could even take over penalty duties.
