Congratulations to Adam Levy, world number one

Fantasy Football Scout member Adam Levy has, as expected, finished first in the overall Fantasy Premier League rankings and topped both of our FPL leagues as a result.

The winning margins in each case have yet to be determined as the game is still in the process of updating but Adam’s 71-point return in Gameweek 38 meant that he finished on 2,659 points, just short of the record set by former winner Jon Reeson in 2009/10.

Adam came into Gameweek 38 with a 60-point advantage over world number two Falah Allawati and in truth, his lead has looked almost unassailable for some weeks now.

Ahead of Sunday’s matches, Adam was 94 and 72 points ahead of second place in our members’ and free-to-all leagues respectively.

Adam’s Midas touch continued in Gameweek 38 as he shipped out Raul Jimenez (£6.9m) and Son-Heung min (£8.6m) for Sergio Aguero (£12.0m) and Nathan Redmond (£5.5m).

Redmond, Aguero, Trent Alexander-Arnold (£5.8m), Christian Eriksen (£9.2m), Aymeric Laporte (£6.3m), Raheem Sterling (£11.7m) and Andrew Robertson (£6.7m) all returned clean sheets and/or attacking points for him today, with only four players blanking.

Adam Levy’s Gameweek history for the second half of the season

You can read more on Adam’s season here and here, while we will be hopefully speaking to the man himself later this week.

Congratulations again, Adam!

Still top 50k, not bad at all! Keeping faith in Pogba wasn't his greatest moment. He capped him this week 😮

He’s always been so patient and I obviously know he’s a better manager than me.

However.. his team was screaming out for one big -8 hit or something when he started to slide and he could have righted that ship I feel.

Patience is key, but sometimes you gotta for the big hit when you’re always behind a player or two.

Mark was always the advocate for the mini WC where you roll a transfer one week then can do three moves for just -4. A big reason I like to try roll when possible.

        I wish I’d avoided arsenal.

I got Laca and Kola in twice. Laca was my first captain blank v Huddersfield. And Kola consistently got me 1 point. Waste of budget, captaincy and transfers and nothing more.

That’s my first rule. NO ARSENAL.

Thanks everyone for your kind words. It feels literally unbelievable to have won. I'm running on about three hours sleep having stayed up through the New Zealand night to see it out. We all start on zero points next season so good luck to everyone!

Very interesting to note that there is no mention of Adams stretegy. He lives in New Zealand and watches very few matches, only replays. If the winner of this game doesn't need to watch the matches that means that the fpl game and the 'real football' are too far apart. You can do well in the fpl game without knowing as much about the game of football.

Obviously a game like this will inevitably be about strategy, but imo it would be better if the game rewarded peoples understanding and knowledge of the great game of football a little more, and less for 'fantasy knowledge'.

Last years winner also didnt watch any games, or hardly any. He relied on the replays and the statistics. That shows that watching epl matches doesn't necessarily benefit you in this game, which seems odd.

I feel there is a danger that the game is moving away from 'added fun when watching epl' and moving towards 'study stats on a monday and follow the right bandwagons'

Anyway I don't wish to take anything away from Adams achievement, he should be delighted and proud that he's won no matter what strategy used. I know its gonna sound like a butthurt fpl player who isnt happy with his rank (49K btw) but I'm actually fine with it. I just feel a bit disapointed when I hear that the best at the fpl game dont even watch the great game, thats all

How is watching a replay not watching matches? Watching them live doesn't change much.

we are obviously talking about highlights not entire match replays. my point is you can win the game by only looking at the stats and not watching a single match. no eye test needed. last years winner said he watched close to zero matches as well and only focused on stats.

to me its just a game then. a game that has little to do with the real football matches. obviously players' points are allocated based on what they do in the real matches but as a fpl player you don't actually have to follow the real football.

I know what you're saying, but I think you're probably overstating the issue a little. Adam never said he doesn't watch, understand or enjoy football at all, he just said his priority was never watching all the games all the time. I'm in Australia and I do watch a fair amount of football, but from I can gather the main difference to a lot of managers is how much time spend focusing specifically on my team and my options, rather than trying to increase my knowledge of every club and player in the game.

I'm not on Twitter, I don't pay too much attention to other people's opinions, and I don't ask questions or RMTs. I just look at my own budget and spend my time thinking strategically about the best combinations of transfers among the group of players with good upcoming fixtures. And it helps if I've seen them play a bit. And then I only look up the stats of those I'm already considering, and compare them against other potential options. I imagine Adam is fairly similar. It's about blocking out the noise, watching just enough football for an eye test, but then mostly playing FPL as the game of numbers, strategy and risk management that it is. I get the impression knowing too much about football (and having strong opinions on whether a player is 'good' or 'rubbish' is a hinderance to some.

Thanks Tigers, happy to help. Ended up at OR 290. Disappointing finish given where I was (highest OR of 25) but that's how the game goes. KDB injured in DGW, Deeney and Son suspensions, TC fail, just a number of things not quite going to plan and as I discovered inside the top 1k you can't really afford any slip-ups. But I won my cash mini-league, which was always the main goal.

          the last part of your comment drives home my exact point;

"mostly playing FPL as the game of numbers, strategy and risk management that it is. I get the impression knowing too much about football is a hinderance"

the fpl game is not really linked to the real football. its just a game that you can win if you play it right (numbers, strategy and risk management as you said). watching the football matches, which is what its all about, doesnt actually benefit you.

its a realization that people who dont watch matches and play fpl as a strategic game of numbers actually do better than the ones who passionately watch as many games as possible.

again im not even saying this is bad or wrong or anything. Its just something ive now understood, as the last two winners both said they hardly watched games (not zero matches, but only very few) and used stats not eye test to play the game.

I would never have expected this to be the better startegy than watching the games. I was convinced that the more you watch the better your chances are, as your essentially collecting the most 'hard evidence' while all the other 'noise' you refer to is people's opinions. Obviosuly the stats are the hard facts and therefore it makes sense that these give the startegic players a good understanding of whats going on (whos in form, etc..)

I barely watch matches, or even highlights. In 2015/16 I watched MotD a few times and no live matches. Did okay that season. I mainly relied on stats and the opinions of people on FFS, which worked well then, maybe not so much now. Although two seasons away probably didn't help I think.

Well done, Elvy. A convincing victory.
I thought you stood a good chance of winning from the moment you shot up to number 2 a couple of game-weeks after triple captaining Aguero, having a higher TV than your rivals at the time and, unlike them, not having used your other chips prematurely.
There can be many a slip tween cup and lip, and bad luck can strike at any time, but once you reached the top you never really looked like losing your lead. Most impressive!
