Jimenez and Pulisic’s pre-seasons set to be affected by CONCACAF Gold Cup

This week sees the start of the 2019 CONCACAF Gold Cup, one of several international tournaments that could have an impact on the first few weeks of the new Fantasy Premier League campaign.

The Copa America, Africa Cup of Nations and European Under-21 Championship also take place this summer, with significant Premier League representation in all three of those competitions.

The Gold Cup runs almost simultaneously to the Copa America, kicking off just after midnight on June 16 and finishing in the early hours of July 8 (UK time).

Any FPL assets who go deep into the tournament will be late back to their respective clubs’ pre-season training camps, with a leave of absence usually granted following summer international duty.

Mexico are the pre-tournament favourites with the bookmakers, so Raul Jimenez may well face this scenario.

Wolves will be taking part in the Asia Cup in Shanghai just over a week after the culmination of the CONCACAF Gold Cup, before getting their UEFA Europa League campaign underway on July 25.

The Premier League season kicks off on the weekend of August 10-11, which gives any FPL assets reaching the final of the Gold Cup five weeks to recuperate – a week more than England, France, Croatia and Belgium players had ahead of the start of 2018/19 after their World Cup exploits.

A nation reaching the final of the 2019 Gold Cup will have to contest six matches in June/July, one fewer than the teams who made it to the third-place play-off and final of last year’s World Cup.

While the likes of Harry Kane and Raheem Sterling recovered in time to make their respective teams’ starting XIs in Gameweek 1 last August, there were others such as Kevin De Bruyne and Eden Hazard who weren’t risked.

How much a second successive summer of international football will affect the likes of Jimenez, Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane further down the line is also open to debate.

We’ll be keeping an eye on the Gold Cup and other international tournaments over the summer, documenting the minutes played and any injuries picked up by the FPL assets involved.

The Premier League players who have been selected for their countries at the Gold Cup are as follows:

Burnley

  • Nahki Wells (Bermuda)

Chelsea

  • Christian Pulisic (USA)
  • Matt Miazga (USA)
  • Michael Hector (Jamaica)

Everton

  • Cuco Martina (Curacao)

Wolverhampton Wanderers

  • Raul Jimenez (Mexico)

Christian Pulisic is the only other real noteworthy name in that list from a Fantasy perspective, with the attacking midfielder set for a busy summer with the United States ahead of his inaugural Premier League campaign.

READ MORE: Scout Report on Christian Pulisic

It may be that Pedro has the upper hand on the right flank at Chelsea in the opening weeks of the season, then, if the USA progress deep into the Gold Cup and Pulisic’s pre-season is subsequently affected.

As we discussed in a recent article, however, there is still much to be resolved at Chelsea between now and August.

Newcastle United wing-back DeAndre Yedlin misses out for the US through injury, while Adrian Mariappa isn’t part of Jamaica’s squad and Javier Hernandez took himself out of the picture with Mexico.

according to FFFix price predictions you can get this team:

    Pickford (Stekelenburg)
    TAA, Robbo Laporte, Digne, Pereira
Salah, Sterling, Townsend, Fraser (Redmond or JWP)
    Zaha 4.5 4.5

    Here are the predicted prices:

    5.5, 4.0
    6.5, 7.0, 6.5, 5.5, 5.5
    13.0, 12.0, 6.0, 7.0 (5.5)
    7.0, 4.5, 4.5

    Also Duelofeu 6.5, VVD 6.5, Mane 11.0, Milli 7.0

    have they underestimated some prices?

I'm struggling to see why Robertson is more expensive than VVD. VVD is more nailed (Robbo as a full-back has to run more and therefore is more prone to be rested in the odd match) and what Robbo has in assist threat is made up for by VVD in goal threat (goals being twice as valuable as assists)

Robbo outscored VVD from less minutes this season so i’d imagine he’ll be at least same price if not 0.5 more expensive

Remember it was only as recently as Christmas that VVD was still being ridiculed as having only 1 attacking return in two & a half years of FPL - despite going close from a few corners he was not encouraging any positive sentiment - wouldn’t take a huge stretch of the imagination for another barren run to kick in

On the whole if one of them is “punching above their weight”and could regress from an FPL points perspective I think it’s more VVD than Robbo... the prior year Robbo also outscored him by about 30% IIRC

          *December - not Christmas

VVD’s Assist for Origi’s bizarre last second winner v Everton in December was his second attacking return in two & a half seasons at that point - I remember as I was contemplating signing him after he had hit the woodwork v Cardiff & arsenal in the prior gameweeks & the FFS sentiment was extremely negative as he “doesn’t get attacking returns”! Lol

All three - TAA/Robbo/VVD should be same price in my view. 5 points between Robbo and VVD and TAA 20 points behind with limited gametime but finished strongest of the three.

Fwiw I reckon TAA will be 0.5 below VvD & Robbo.
Gomez is the factor here and I'll be keen to see his price.

            My thoughts in more detail:

I’d say Laporte will be 6.5, not sure he’s done enough to justify 7.0 (both points wise and points per minute wise he has to be below TAA imo)

Could honestly see Robbo & VVD being 8.0’s, although I do hope they’re not... Robbo in particular is at risk though as he not only out-pointed VVD, he did it while not starting every game (VVD started all 38)... albeit he only missed 2 games

            So in pricing terms:

            Robbo >>> VVD >>> TAA >>> Laporte >>> Digne

            Robbo 8.0
            VVD 7.5
            TAA 7.0
            Laporte 6.5
            Digne 6.0

7.0 hopefully for TAA, he might avoid the 7.5 for one more year, he’ll be bargain of the season at 7.0

There is no scenario where Mané is anything less than 1.0-1.5m cheaper than Salah though imo (other than Mo being shunted upfield to striker)

They both play the same position, for the same team, with Mané having a superb season, yet Salah goes and outscores that superb season by nearly 15% / 30 points - that’s a serious price differential right there - let alone that Momwas definitely playing within himself and statistically has a scary amount of room for improvement on his season

Same with Sterling - he has to fit in between the two Liverpool lads as he outpointed Mané from over 10% less minutes (!) yet was nearly 30 points (!) behind Salah... I think we’ll get lucky & he’ll be max 12.0 - Salah was 13.0 after scoring 300 points last year - Sterling got 230 this year which isn’t even the same postcode for pricing

            Salah 13.0
            Sterling 12.0
            Mane 11.5

Salah is going on for nearly 600 points in nearly 80 appearances - he is an FPL phenomenon - the fact that people were wildly disappointed with him this year despite him scoring 260 points says it all really - could easily break 300 points next year (IF he stays as a mid)

Robbo at £8m would be a disgrace. He has zero goal threat. Baines was on penalties.

Wouldn’t get too hung up on what proportion of a player’s points are contributed by goals - on the list of variables taken into account when pricing a player that particular factor would be as irrelevant as the player’s price in the prior season

                - i.e. if a player scores the points the get the price tag

Baines was one of the only 8.0 defenders in the history of the game... yet Robbo scores more points... same with 8.0 Vidic and 8.0 JT

Also bear in mind - there is also the chance (however slight) that he becomes the first 8.5 defender

Given that he is the highest scoring defender of all time in a single season, it’s not beyond the realms of possibility that he’s the highest priced defender to ever be in the game...

Yet he still outscored Baines by a distance? He wasn’t far off Hazard and he was 10m...

Yeah I just don’t see how goals in isolation is a factor at all - points are what matter and Robbo pretty much broke the game for points...

VVD wasn’t far behind but started every game so his points per is a small bit weaker, plus I wonder how sustainable his explosion of attacking returns from Dec’18 onwards is - he went from 1 return in two & a half years to 8 returns in 5 months... splitting the difference he may not be as prolific (or may score more, who knows?)

Would be awesome if we got Robbo for 7.5 but I fear he’ll be 8.0 personally

Salah, Sterling, Mané & Laporte look correct imo...

      TAA looks 0.5 undercalled
      Digne 0.5 undercalled
Robbo looks at least 0.5 if not 1.0 undercalled
      VVD 1.0 undercalled
      Mili probably 7.5-8.0

Do you only get 1 transfer per round? I was under the impression there was more? Either way I feel fine with keeping my team largely intact after a few changes I think. I generally picked from the strongest teams at hopefully cut prices. The Dzsenifer injury will i'm sure make many unclear whether to invest in Germany before the rest of the group stages against easier teams.

It worked in a private browser, maybe it is a cache thing. Will clear that as well. Good call, Geoff, thanks.

With Chelsea's transfer ban, do you think they are more likely to recall loaned players (especially if they lose any more players).
Is Abrahams ready to be a forward for them?

      he might have to be

      there's also Batshuayi

seems like Higuain might be sent back to Juve along with Sarri.

Yep, maybe Batshuayi ahead of Abrahams, like you say.

      3. De Bruyne

What was all the Arsenal rotation up front about though...

Owned him so many times last year - he was basically a constant nightmare - could do very well though, probably worth keeping a path open for an expensive striker in case him Kun or Kane start firing - I’m not really interested in any of them currently though

    Hi mates.

Which service / subscription / twitter account is the most appropriate in what concerns providing predicted player prices, in your view?

I am willing to start the tinkering from thursday onwards 🙂

See above. Ffix costs £10 for access to price predictions.

They reckon they have 98.4% accuracy.

But as everyone knows, 119% of statistics are made up.

Has anyone looked at what type of Championship teams end up thriving in the Prem?

Is it mainly defensive ones that grind out enough draws to stay up?

Is it mainly attacking ones that go for lesser teams around them but shut up shop against the big teams?

Or is it teams that go all out v everyone and get a few shocks along with some wins against lesser Prem teams?

I don't think you can count Wolves as they were the Man City of the Championship.

Last 6 promotions, Wolves, Newcastle, Brighton, Burnley, Watford, Bournemouth, Leicester and Crystal Palace are still in the PL.

Could call 3 boring and 5 attacking from those.

Obviously lots of transfers, possibly some big money ones, still to be made this summer, but at this point what key players are you looking at having in each position? Difficult to say whole teams without prices, but go ahead if you can.

      TAA Mendy
      Salah Sterling KDB
      Vardy Pukki (4.5)

      1. SADIO SANÉ
        • 8 Years

        Auba could become pretty tempting

    2. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus
      • 14 Years
      4 years, 9 months ago

      Henderson (4.5)
      TAA, Robbo, Digne, Laporte (7.0 + 8.0 + 6.5 + 6.5 = 28.0)
      Salah, Sterling (13.0 + 12.0 = 25.0)
      Vardy (9.0)

I think that would come in around 66.5-ish

Adding 17.5-18.5 for a bench comes to around 84.5-ish

Leaves about 16.0 - 17.0 for 3 starting attackers, or a rotation with bench players to pad out he other 3 starting slots.. it’ll be tight, but Pukki & JWP high on the shortlist for one of those slots - hopefully both 6.0’s

If Mendy is fit I’ll be investing in a crowbar to fit him in also, or possibly drop Laporte & bring him back in when Mendy’s Injured

Whoever is 4.5 and looks alright in goal, Dubravka?
One of the Liverpool defenders, assuming they're not all 7.5.
Salah Mane Sterling of course and then maybe someone like Fraser if he's 6.5 and moves to Arsenal and it looks like he'll play? All the players we know who are good but had bad/injured seasons of course- De Bruyne, Alli etc
Think Vardy will be in a lot of teams if his price isn't too awkward. Jimenez, Wilson etc.

Just all comes down to prices unfortunately. But I try to avoid players who are new to the league, ie Pulisic.

Check out shelf utd’s defensive record from last year - He looks like he could be very useful & should be 4.5

Cleansheets potential vs weaker teams and hopefully saves vs better teams

I’d be tempted by him plus she’d utd’s 4.0 backup to pinch a few pennies for elsewhere

What a load of crap. The kid would probably walk into a starting position in pretty much any defence in the world (including Barca, surely), and not even just because of how much he'll cost. 😆
