FPL reveal the first player prices of 2019/20

The first Fantasy Premier League player prices of the 2019/20 season have been revealed by the game’s official Twitter account.

Wednesday evening saw five players priced up, with four of them more expensive than they were at the start of 2018/19.

We also had the first positional reclassification of the season announced.

Lukasz Fabianski (£5.0m) – Goalkeeper

Having begun the last two seasons at £4.5m, Lukasz Fabianski has been handed a price rise to £5.0m for the start of the new campaign.

Fabianski was the sixth-highest-scoring FPL goalkeeper of 2018/19, having been the top Premier League shot-stopper for saves made (148).

The Polish goalkeeper has been in the top four for that statistic in each of the last five seasons.

The Hammers actually sit top of our Season Ticker from Gameweeks 2 to 12, once the opening weekend visit of Manchester City is out of the way.

It remains to be seen how FPL price up other goalkeepers in last year’s budget bracket but Fabianski’s price hike may be a blow to those who considered the Poland international a reliable, cut-price option who they could ‘set and forget’.

Andrew Robertson (£7.0m) – Defender

The top-scoring FPL defender of 2018/19 has, as expected, been handed a price rise ahead of next season.

Andrew Robertson was available for £6.0m 12 months ago but Fantasy managers looking to buy the Scotland international will now have to fork out £7.0m – just £0.1m more than his peak price in Gameweeks 30-32 in the season just gone.

Robertson registered 21 clean sheets, 12 assists and 29 bonus points last season.

It will be interesting to see what price Trent Alexander-Arnold is listed as by FPL, given that the Liverpool and England right-back outscored his teammate in terms of points per match (6.4 v 5.9) in 2018/19 and recorded twice as many assists (ten v five) in the final 11 Gameweeks of last season.

Matt Ritchie (£5.5m) – Defender

The first FPL positional change of 2019/20 has been announced.

Matt Ritchie, as we and many others anticipated, has been reclassified as a Fantasy defender, having been used almost exclusively as a left-back/wing-back from Gameweek 13 onwards.

Rafael Benitez switched to a 3-4-2-1/5-4-1 in November and effectively stuck with it for the remainder of the season.

The Spanish head coach will, of course, depart the north-east when his contract expires at the end of June.

Whoever takes up the managerial role at St James’ Park, then, may have different ideas about Newcastle’s formation and where Ritchie fits into that new system.

We could, therefore, have Ritchie as an “out of position” asset as soon as Gameweek 1.

The Magpies’ opening run of fixtures is one of the least appealing in the division, however, and there may be little interest in Newcastle assets straight away.

Whether the new head coach on Tyneside can match the 11 clean sheets that Newcastle kept in 2018/19 is another question, given how well Benitez organised the personnel at his disposal.

Ryan Fraser (£7.5m) – Midfielder

The best-value FPL midfielder of 2018/19 (based on points per million spent) has, unsurprisingly, been handed a steep price rise.

Fraser started last season as a budget £5.5m option but had risen to £6.4m by the season’s end, having finished as the sixth-highest-scoring FPL midfielder with 181 points.

A total of 21 attacking returns was more than he had managed in the previous two seasons combined, while only Eden Hazard and Raheem Sterling registered more assists than the Scotland international (14).

£7.5m was perhaps at the top-end of what we were expecting but no FPL asset came close to matching the 28 big chances that he created.

The Cherries face all three newly promoted teams in the first nine Gameweeks of 2019/20.

Ricardo Pereira (£6.0m) – Defender

Leicester City’s attack-minded right-back has been handed a price rise, which may be enough to deter many FPL managers.

Nevertheless, only Liverpool duo Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andrew Robertson registered more assists than Pereira (eight) among FPL defenders last season.

The Portugal international was the second-highest-scoring FPL defender who didn’t play for one of the ‘big six’ and outscored Matt Doherty by two points.

Pereira didn’t miss out on any of the ten clean sheets that the Foxes recorded, while he had the occasional “out of position” run-out on the wing – though was very much used as an orthodox right-back under new boss Brendan Rodgers.

It will be interesting to see what price Ben Chilwell is on the opposite flank, given that the England left-back registered half the number of attacking returns (no goals, five assists) in 2018/19.

The fact that Leicester sit bottom of our Season Ticker for Gameweeks 1 to 8 may delay any sort of investment in the Foxes’ backline, however.

Are they thinking Pool defenders will fail to hit the 190/200 mark? There has been 8 players that made the 200s. 2 are Pool defenders and the other 6 cost between 10-13 mil.

Robbo at 7.0 is an easy steal, was willing to even pay 8.0 for him.

But what a fake out! Pereira and Fraser crazy expensive. You’d expect everything else to adjust accordingly. Could see a lot of premium players hovering around 13.0. Wingbacks like Digne and AWB could be crazy expensive, around 6.5.

Was already planning a 5-3-2 so it’s funny to see people advocating that already, but I don’t think I’ll be able to afford what I thought I could realistically afford before.

Nice analysis on what this means going forward.

I'm very happy with Robbo at £7.0m. Was desperately worried he'd be £7.5m. Either way, it hinges on TAA. If he comes in at £6.5m then it's goodbye Robbo. Latter half of last season showed TAA is the better option when nailed to start in my opinion.

Definitely agree on the comments on defensive set-up. Lots were keen on 5-3-2 over the summer but we might not be able to afford such a formation if the current price reveals say anything about what we'll find out when the game launches!

These price reveals only strengthen the idea of 5 at the back. Why would you own mid tier midfielders when someone like Fraser costs more than Robbo?

My 5 at the back was going to be

          Robertson+TAA+Digne+AWB+Zinchenko
          7.5+7.0+6.0+6.0+5.5= 32m was my prediction

          Now it looks like
          7.0+7.0+6.5+6.5+6.0= 33.5m

That’s a big difference, especially considering that with the previous prediction I could barely fit in two premiums at 13m and 12m. I get what you’re saying but if you’re playing 5 at the back you want quality wing backs, and with Pereira being that expensive it’s likely that the whole lot of them are going to be 6.0+, and that just isn’t feasible.

If Pereira is 6.0 a MUN AWB is going for 6.5

Unless Pereira is just a crazy anomaly but I highly doubt it with how they’ve priced Fraser and even Ritchie to a certain degree

I cant believe a United defender with no proven attacking threat is going to cost 0.5 less than the highest scoring defender ever. United are crap defensively and AWB has not proven himself to be prolific going forward.

Why would AWB be more than Pereira ?

Pereira has 2 goals and 8 assists whereas AWB had 3 assists.
Pereira scored 26 more points, playing for a team that had 2 less clean sheets.

Crystal Palace kept 12 clean sheets United kept 7.
So he does contribute attacking returns and gone to a team that has a worst defense.

My guess is he comes in at 5.5 or even 5.0

Combination of him having a good season, being a hyped signing, and playing for MUN. I expected 5.5 for AWB but the Pereira price point is interesting because it’s very rare that a defender from a non-top six side is more expensive than a top-six starter unless they haul big time (Baines, Coleman, Van Aanholt). Not sure that Pereira has done enough for that but glad to be wrong!

Take Coleman as an example in 16/17 he scored 133 pts 4g, 4a, 10cs.
                    whereas Pereira last season 146 pts, 2g, 8a, 10cs.

in 17/18 Coleman had a finishing price of 6.4 Since he only scored 39 points it safe to assume his starting price was either 7m or 6.5m

Robertson, TAA, Laporte, Zinchenko, Coleman/Digne. Possibly Alonso if featured in Lampard's pre season plans. All of them will still easily offer more value than midfielders when you have someone like Fraser costing 7.5

Personal thoughts? Pretty happy with Robbo being cheap as I was prepared to fork out 8.0 - but totally get the frustration as that price forces many people’s hands - very risky to go without now

Ederson, Robbo, TAA, Digne, Coleman, Laporte
      5.5, 7.0, 7.0, 6.0, 5.5, 6.5 = 37.5 well spent

      Salah, Sterling, Vardy
      13.0, 12.0, 9.0 = 34.0 well spent

      Bench
      17.5 of fluff

Leaves 11.0 for two starting attackers... give us some 5.0’s & 5.5’s mids/Fwds FPL, maybe even a cheeky 4.5!

The Pereira price worries me. The rest I think are bang-on.
I'm going for 4 premium defenders this season and it looks like FPL Towers have cottoned on. There's going to be a lot of first and second-tier defenders bunched around 6-7m making, as MBP notes, a strong D-line very expensive.

And in fairness I pointed out that even using capping wouldn’t have increased the credibility of the statement - when you peel back the layers:

              1. - “FPL has been suppressing the price of good defenders...”
(Highest priced defender when the game opened last season was 6.5 - So this section - True)

              2. - “...in recent seasons...”
(Fairly true, albeit it’s important to acknowledge that defenders points scores have been equally suppressed in recent versus the premium 8.0’s of prime-JT, Baines, Vidic, so the credibility starts to stretch a little here)

              3. - “...to try to create more variety in formation”
(No evidence for this at all - speculative at best, still fair to say it has the whiff of fresh bollocks about it, and by association it taints the entire statement. I still find it’s like something someone with a patreon to sell would possibly say hence my original analogy)

Ooh, sorry for accidentally conflating studied observation for fact on one tiny segment of a broader point.

The broader point was you had pretty much convinced yourself Robertson would be 8.0, were trying to convince everyone else he would likely be that price, and didn't like it when I said I doubt that would happen because they've been capping the cost of defenders at 7.0 in recent seasons.

I think you’re possibly stretching things - yes many totally didn’t expect Robbo to be 7.0 - and you know my own personal reasoning why - (the abridged version is - highest scoring defender in history doesn’t get highest defensive price tag in history.... not exactly shockingly bad logic?)

And as also pointed out I still haven’t changed my original opinion that in the lack of any evidence being presented throughout our conversation - and I quote - “I’m sorry but the FPL wanting people to play different formations thing has the distinct but unmistakeable whiff of fresh bollocks about it... a bit like a Jay Egersdorf masterclass”

Is there any evidence that FPL want people to play different formations more in recent seasons than seasons past? Or have you literally just made that up? 🙂

A refresher on the context always useful 😉

I’m sorry that’s yet another stretch - speculative at best 🙂 I know you had a quiet 3 weeks but before, during, and after that hiatus you’d have seen many fine people discussing the merits of going big at the back this season

Unfortunately this is not to satisfy some fictional desire FPL towers have for formational diversity... but rather because of the unprecedented abundance of defensive talent

And we really are going to have to work on this habit of posting speculative guesses as indisputable facts - never a good thing 😉

So unfortunately I’m sorry but the FPL wanting people to play different formations thing still has the distinct but unmistakeable whiff of bollocks about it... it’s just not as fresh now nearly a month later 😉

Hmmmm... or are you perhaps bitter that you’ve been rightly called out on your poorly formed opinion and fabricated “fact”?

At having been called out on stating that “FPL have capped defenders prices in recent seasons to encourage different formations” is a totally speculative concoction borne perhaps of an over active imagination?

Did it sting so much you waited three weeks to pop back out of the woodwork with a celebration?

Come come now Diva, let go of this bitterness, and ease up on the old stating speculative guesses as indisputable facts - you’ll be all the happier for it i’d wager 😉

Normally I wouldn't rub someone's nose in it for being wrong like you were. If you'd just respectfully said you disagreed with me or nicely observed that I should have added "in my opinion FPL does this to..." then I'd have agreed and never given it another thought. But you chose to be insulting instead. There was no need for it.

You put forward a poorly formed opinion as indisputable fact and you can’t expect to do that and not get called on it unfortunately... but you can learn from it - take the lesson and move on - you’re approaching 50% of your last 4 weeks post history on this topic, you may want to take a break 🙂

      So far so interesting.

      Robbo looks value

Flappy, Ritchie and Pereira absolutely not.

Fraser could be, I think this is interesting depending on where he is.

What we’ve learnt? That fpl appears to be all over the place, so good luck predicting any other prices!

There are FPL circles out there which feel that Robbo is too expensive, funnily enough. I don't think the ownership will be as high as people may think. Personally if TAA is also 7.0m, I'm not sure who I'd pick.
Fraser, after a bit more rumination. feels fairly priced. If the Wilson-Fraser partnership flourishes, 7.5m is a very decent price. Better than any Arsenal midfielder, lets say.
Ricardo is a big no-no. Rodgers sides don't keep a lot of clean sheets.
Ritchie is an interesting one. Potentially OOP, on penalties, decent set piece taker, and Newcastle has some very decent defenders in there. Rafa's departure will be a massive blow, though. Don't know if the new gaffer will fancy him.
Fabianski is in such an awkward pricepoint. 5.0m is just not the price I'd get for a non-top six GK to play as a set and forget. If I was paying for more than 4.5m for a set and forget GK, he better be Allison, Ederson, Kepa or Lloris. Maybe DeGea.

One good option from last year is going to have 80% ownership, and one will have 0% ownership. That suggests to me that the prices aren’t right

from an ownership perspective those prices do seem terrible, although I do personally think there is a chance Robbo/VVD don't score that highly again next season - the problem is that going without (and being wrong) is a complete rank destroyer due to high ownership, which is lame

The only way that you make that Robertson buy challenging on a 100m budget is if your premium players are obscenely expensive, like Salah @ 14m, Sterling @ 13.5m, Mane @ 13.5m

I really hope that isn’t the route they’re taking but I could see it happening. Make the premium even more premium so people have to go extra cheap elsewhere.

    1. ★Kuntheman★
      • 8 Years
      4 years, 9 months ago

Combined with the prices you’re seeing for Fraser, Pereira...shows a leaning towards making players a lot more expensive across the board to force decisions rather than pricing players comparatively. Could be a very challenging season.

    2. Brosstan
      • 9 Years

Surely that would only lead to people picking just one premium, permacapping and going max value elsewhere. Thats what I would do. Its already a valid strategy.

I wonder would that pricing structure not just effectively funnel even more ownership towards the Robbos, VVD’s & TAA’s of his though...

I’m a huge Salah fan, but if he’s a 14.0 mid, and Mané is 13.0 i’ll Be going Robbo, TAA, VVD (assuming they’re all 7.0 or less)

A 4.5 defender only needs 135 points to match Robertson for value if the Liverpool man ends up with 210 points. You're likely never going to captain Robertson or any other defender for that matter. Uber cheap defenders provide much more value than uber cheap attackers.

The goal is always to end up with the top class defenders by season's end but that's at least in part true because teams are more solid defensively after Christmas and because our budgets have increased significantly from GW 1 to then.

The initial overpricing should serve to remind us that there is value in cheap enablers and we need not be reminded that the most viable cheap options each year are defenders.

Not saying Robbo won't be great value and a true premium force but this talk of falling behind early doors if not owning a defender no one will captain and of 5-ATB being the most fashionable formation is a little out of hand. Max Aarons at 4.5 after all could very well outpace the Scot in value.

    1. SADIO SANÉ
      • 8 Years
      4 years, 9 months ago

I always say stuff like this about defenders, but how many 4.5 defenders get 135+? good luck picking them out before the season starts (or even midway). They've made it an easy decision for people that would have paid 8m+, why not just make those people pay the premium? would have been much more interesting imo

      1. diesel001
        • 7 Years
        4 years, 9 months ago

This. The best £4.0m / £4.5m defenders this season were Doherty, AWB, Duffy and Boly. Of these only Doherty scored 135 pts or more.

    2. HNI
      • 10 Years
      4 years, 9 months ago

The thing about 4.5mn defenders is you dont play them every match. But yes 6.5mn is max I spend on defender every fpl season run in of first half. Even Penalty taking Baines made into my team around boxing day when penalties fly about. Main goal will be to get peno takers this season as VAR will surely increase goals due to nervousness of defenders in physical epl

"You're likely never going to captain Robertson or any other defender for that matter"

I guess the question you would ask the person doubting a Robertson captaincy is: did they ever captain Aguero ?Robertson was the 5th highest scoring player, outscoring Aguero by 12 points (6% more points)

I like this logic, but in the sea of 4.0 to 4.5 players, picking the right ones are so tough. Those that make it or get anywhere near are not exactly easy to identify and, for a lot of people, successfully rotate.

My tuppence is that Robertson price (or TAA for that matter) makes little difference to formation. 4th and 5th best defenders (eg everton/chelsea/Man City nailed), high scoring mid/low price forward options (of which its not just going to be the same as last year) will determine best formation. Let's not get ahead of ourselves...

        Robbo looks nailed.

Fabianski is the one I am struggling with. He has great fixtures after GW1 and arguably is still a good option at £5.0m for a set and forget GK for the first 12 GWs.

Will have to see what the other prices are for GKs to decide on him.

That could be the choice though. Fraser is no longer competing with £5.5m / £6m players. He is competing with TAA, Robbo, Digne etc. I would favour the defenders over Fraser in that situation.

Possible. £6.5m is likely given his PPM was higher and he is on free-kicks and corners.

I think 7.0 is a fair price for Robbo. that or 7.5 feels about right. Hopefully TAA and VVD are priced the same so that doubling up becomes a difficult choice.

No interest in Ritchie or Fabianski or Fraser. My 'keepers will be 4.5 + 4.0 unless theres a really special looking 5.0 and Ritchie and Fraser don't look good value to me. Appreciate Fraser had a stormer last year but don't see him repeating that this season - i'll be looking to invest heavy in city and pool and the rest of the players will be bargain basement

Would you buy him at that price if he was an Arsenal player?

Do most people feel Deulo will be listed as a forward?

Think he will remain as a Midfielder for next season

I don't see any reason why he wouldn't be.

So that's one player in the template already then. Disappointingly low price for Robertson.

The group think on here (albeit small numbers) has been the same for ages with nearly everyone going with Robbo, TAA and Digne but it will all change by the team we kick off

£5.5 defender in a Benitez-less Newcastle is funny.
