Is a Liverpool defensive double-up a viable option for Fantasy managers?

Liverpool’s defence has been fairly disappointing this season – at least as a collective.

Having recorded an impressive 21 clean sheets in 2018/19 (the most in a single Premier League campaign in 11 years), the Reds’ backline was always going to struggle to match last season’s output.

So far there have been just two shut-outs: only Norwich City and Tottenham Hotspur have registered fewer in the English top flight in 2019/20.

Even their second string have been getting in on the act, with Liverpool drawing 5-5 with Arsenal in a bonkers EFL Cup tie on Wednesday.

A favourable fixture swing awaits Jurgen Klopp’s side after the November international break, however, with the Reds playing Crystal Palace, Brighton and Hove Albion, Everton, Bournemouth and Watford before their blank Gameweek 18.

Fantasy managers might be tentatively considering a Liverpool defensive double-up during this period, then, but how do the Reds’ underlying statistics stack up? Have they been unlucky so far? And how are they comparing to last season’s numbers?

We attempt to address some of these questions in our Members’ article below.

Memberships for the 2019/20 campaign are still available for the equivalent of £2.50 a month, with a full list of benefits and details of how to subscribe available here.

      Am trying to work out if 8.4m is a good price for a striker or overpriced for a left winger.

        Can't be arsed to use transfers on defenders.. green sea of fixtures coming soon. I did one transfer to my defenders and that wad Digne to Aurier, just before his red and I still have him 😛

        Had the double all season. Top 500, all chips intact. It's not been the defensive disappointments that have killed people because, although not the best value options, they have still been amongst top scorers.

      Depends on how many FTs you have and if there are any other fires in your team. Martial if you have 1 ft, better long term realistically. DSilva if you have 2fts and no other changes you desire to make.

    Would you go for Connolly, roll FT, hope he plays this week and then look to get Martial in for Dendo next week?

    Or use both FT on Wilson Dendo to Greenwood Martial this week?

    Essentially, would only get Connolly if playing this week, otherwise can save 0.3m on a benchee with Greenwood

      Hmmm- Connolly is a better bet than Greenwood- he plays and you will want a deep bench as injuries, bench Ings etc come at you. I would get Martial soon.

    2 FT. Which plan do you prefer?

    A) GW11: Pukki -> Connolly
    GW12: Aguero + Hayden -> Kane (C) + Martial

    B) GW11: Pukki + Son -> Vardy + Martial
    GW12: Aguero -> Kane (C)

    Option B leaves me with enough ITB to upgrade my 5th defender Kelly to a 4.5+

    1. Maneonthemap

      Bringing in Kane to captain before a home fixture against newly promoted team never works, trust me! Wouldn’t be looking to lose Son either, looks a much better option than Kane and always starts firing right now, especially considering their fun of fixtures. Would do the Pukki>Connolly move then try and get Vardy and Martial in while ditching Aguero next week.

    I've had TAA and Robertson since GW1 and while I'm none too thrilled with some of the last gasp consolations they've shipped, I'm reasonable happy to have them. Some price fluctuations that made no sense, but seems fine now.

    Under the assumption that Villa are not entirely dead meat at home, I'm benching the Scot in favour of the Inglander for this one match. Trent-Darby-Alexander would be most likely to register attacking returns of the two. I had considered selling Robertson some weeks back, to move some cash into midfield (I had toyed with Mané in addition to the Sterling/KdB wonder twins), but will be keeping now that I've settled on my back line (Poolers, Rico, Lunds, AWB).

      Would still start Robertson ahead of all your other defenders this week, even if no clean sheet still has a high chance of attacking returns

        Replying to both - would this not be a case of eggs in one basket? No clean sheet for one is no clean sheet for two...

        I will, of course, make a note of this feedback and see if my 3-4-3 changes shape before Saturday morning.
