Plum fixture for Liverpool as rest of Virtual FPL top six face tougher tests

Our latest round-up of Ragabolly’s Fantasy management game reflects on back-to-back Gameweeks at the weekend and looks ahead to Tuesday’s matches.

NO DOUBLES, MO CRY
→. Of players who have made at least one start, who has the best minutes-per-expected goal involvement average?

It’s now eight games without a double-digit haul for Mohamed Salah (£12.7m).

Sadio Mane (£12.4m) has registered four such returns in the interim, with the Senegalese winger now top of the vFPL form table over the last five Gameweeks.

A bit of perspective is needed, though: Salah has only blanked once in his last eight showings, is joint-top of the goalscorers’ charts, is 43 points clear of Mane in the overall points table and is joint-third in the vFPL form table.

A home match against Southampton is up next; Salah’s last blank at virtual Anfield was in Gameweek 2 against Arsenal.

Liverpool are the only club in the top six who don’t have a ‘red’ fixture in Gameweek 24, too.

HOVE INTO VIEW

The most in-form team from a defensive perspective right now are, surprisingly, Brighton and Hove Albion.

The Seagulls have kept a remarkable five clean sheets in their last six matches, conceding just once over that time.

While the ultimate test of free-scoring Liverpool awaits in Gameweek 25, Albion still have some appealing matches against Burnley, Aston Villa, Newcastle United and Norwich City (albeit only one of which is at home) before their unfavourable fixture swing in Gameweek 30.

Adam Webster (£4.4m) is the biggest attacking threat in the Brighton backline and indeed picked up an assist in Gameweek 23 but has been benched in three of the last six matches, so carries a rotation risk.

Goalkeeper Mathew Ryan (£4.7m) and the ever-present Dan Burn (£4.5m) look the securest routes into the Brighton defence, although are seemingly less likely to pick up bonus points based on what we have seen so far this season.

KICK IN THE BALDOCKS

Sheffield United kept their seventh clean sheet of the season in a 1-0 win over Aston Villa on Sunday, which was also their sixth shut-out at home.

Missing out on the points however was George Baldock (£5.1m), the fifth-most-owned defender in Virtual FPL.

The wing-back was (presumably) benched for the first time this season, failing to even appear as a substitute as teammates Chris Basham (£4.6m), Jack O’Connell (£4.7m) and Enda Stevens (£5.1m) supplemented their clean sheets with bonus points.

Ragabolly has previously mentioned that he has developed the game so that players can miss the odd game through an undeclared illness or unspecified reason, so it may be that Baldock will return to the starting XI on Tuesday and beyond.

MAN OF TODD

Teemu Pukki‘s (£6.5m) credentials we bigged up on Friday ahead of Norwich City’s fixture swing in Gameweek 23.

Enjoying a similarly good run of form is teammate Todd Cantwell (£4.8m), who has scored three games running.

The budget midfielder has been involved in the same number of attacks (24) as Pukki over the last four Gameweeks and has started 16 of the Canaries’ last 17 fixtures.

A season-wide conversion rate of 6% (Pukki’s is 11%) suggests we can’t expect fireworks from Cantwell on a weekly basis but in West Ham and Bournemouth, Norwich’s next opponents, the cut-price asset is at least facing two defences who will give him ample chance to extend that scoring sequence.

TOFFEES UNSTUCK?
 1

Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£6.4m) blanked on Sunday but an excellent run of form had seen him plunder 11 attacking returns in the 10 Gameweeks before that point.

Everton are about to embark on a sequence of five fixtures against sides who are all in the top six, so a number of Calvert-Lewin’s owners may be considering moving him on ahead of Tuesday’s deadline – perhaps to someone like Pukki, who has an altogether more favourable run of games.

While fixture difficulty is relevant when it comes to goals scored, it should be said that Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur and Wolverhampton Wanderers, three of Everton’s next four opponents, sit in the bottom eight for clean sheets in this simulated season.

Wolves and Spurs indeed are in the bottom seven for goals conceded, too, with only Norwich having shipped more than the Lilywhites.

EMBARRASSING RASH
A rare home blank for Rashford as United struggle again against also-rans

It’s now eight blanks in a row for Marcus Rashford (£8.8m) following another disappointing two games for the Manchester United striker at the weekend.

The forward has been involved in 49 attacks without success during that time, so, even though form is a huge part of Ragabolly’s game, it’s hard to believe that a return isn’t surely imminent.

Rashford had a conversion rate of 13% before this barren run, with that figure now levelling off at 9% – a similar figure that Raul Jimenez (£8.1m) and Jamie Vardy (£9.6m) boast in the same price bracket.

A home match against a porous Wolves side offers some hope but with so many cheaper options offering superior form and fixtures at present, his popularity is likely to dwindle further.

TopMarx’s spreadsheet that details team attacks (for and against, home and away) has been updated after Gameweek 23 and can be viewed here.

The interactive player stats spreadsheet has also been refreshed after the latest round of matches, meanwhile.

INJURIES AND BANS

A cluster of players will be available again on Tuesday, although few will likely be of interest to Virtual FPL managers.

Bukayo Saka (£4.6m), Kenny McLean (£4.8m), Cuco Martina (£4.0m), Jan Vertonghen (£5.2m), James Tarkowski (£5.1m), Daniel Podence (£5.1m), Harry Maguire (£5.3m), Neil Taylor (£4.2m) and David Silva (£7.3m) all return from injury, while Harry Wilson (£5.8m) is back from a three-match ban and James Tomkins (£5.0m) will return after being dismissed for two yellow cards on Saturday.

Christoph Zimmermann (£4.4m), Morgan Schneiderlin (£4.4m), Lewis Cook (£5.0m), Lucas Torreira (£4.7m), Nicolas Pepe (£9.2m), Moritz Leitner (£4.3m), Jesse Lingard (£6.3m), Javier Manquillo (£4.3m) and Andriy Yarmolenko (£5.2m) all picked up fresh injuries over the weekend, with full details of their absences in the table above.

Mesut Ozil (£7.2m) was sent off for Arsenal on Sunday and will sit out Tuesday’s match, meanwhile.

Valentino Lazaro (£5.4m), Isaac Hayden (£4.3m) and Richarlison (£8.3m) all saw red in the same match on Saturday, with each having two matches of their three-game bans still to go.

RANKINGS

Fábio Borges has extended his lead to 40 points in the overall standings and in our Fantasy Football Scout mini-league, with Joe Gunbie moving up to second on Saturday and staying there after Gameweek 23.

The Christians and Venker were new entries into the top ten in the table above.

Greyhead returned to the summit of his Great and the Good league after a well-played Bench Boost in Gameweek 23, while TopMarx has consolidated his position at the top of the Mods and Cons league.

A good alternative for FPL when the gameweeks kick off again, if possible, to help give those with their WC that slight advantage (which is fair) is to give every player 1FT for every GW missed? So was it 9 GW’s? So everyone starts with 9FT’s. It’s essentially a small WC, but atleast those that still have theirs have the advantage of using it later on in the calender.

Does anyone think something along these lines could work? Would it be fair?

I assume you could only roll 2 to the next GW though? If the first GW is a double I'd take that since could build for double with 9 FTs and still play BB then could use my WC the next week to fix the mess.

      It won't happen though.

Possibly, but wonder whether the 7 or 8 million individual FT count calculations & additions might put them off though

A Free extra Wildcard, but also allowing those who kept their original WC to hold onto it probably easier to implement & still allows those who kept it to make use of it rather than having to burn/waste it

You are supposed to manage your FPL team like a Tamagotchi until the game ends...that is a big part of the game to me. That involves checking the FPL site at least every few days for updates and to read and understand any new rules. Of course these are highly exceptional circumstances but in terms of the game it is only about meeting deadlines. Transfers were always available. I would have sympathy on those that may have lost internet access for reasons relating to the virus, but only those.

If a free WC is given out then so be it, at least it is a level playing field. But to take away a held WC chip would make a mockery of it all.

From what I’ve read, and seen of the powers of FPL towers, just creating extra GWs seems to be a maximum test of there coding abilities.
Adding extra transfers, bonus WCs etc is a bridge too far.

They’ve done a bonus/compensatory WC before tbf - extra gameweeks or transfers have never been tried

Whats changed, still the same amount of fixtures left maybe just a different time scale. Whatever happens it is the same for everybody, sad if previous plans go out the window but all participants had the opportunity to make transfers during the game weeks as usual. Personally i changed 7 players so it was like a mini wildcard, i only have the free hit left, however as i said i am not disadvantaged as long as it is the same for everyone.

The WC situation is a tricky one. Perhaps people who used chips during the GW that the season was suspended (and therefore got no benefit from it) should have theres

'should have theirs reinstated'. I don't agree with a blanket free WC for all though.

Everyone getting 9 free transfers is exactly what has just happened. If people didn't use them that was their decision.

It's not easy to use free transfers to plan ahead for an undetermined schedule. I think that's the primary issue.

Fixtures play a key part of transfer planning for most.

That's right. For all we know us slow WC guys don't have a better team than those that left their teams alone. Any injured 'deadwood' might now be back in play. Plus if they make the first weekend back a 2 matcher with City v Arsenal/Villa v Sheff U then those that loaded up for that City game are in great shape.

Yes, agreed on that. It was a risk both not making/making trades but that’s part of the game. I personally made 5, even though I still have my second WC.

The only logical reason for an additional WC is to attract more managers back to the website who might have otherwise thrown in the towel. Which makes me think this is the most likely outcome.

Personally, I think we should all start from where we left off. It would be the fairest thing to do.

I'd have no issue with that. They should have just froze the game in terms of transfers straight after City v Arsenal was abandoned and that GW was over.

If Coutinho signs for a PL side, how much do you think he'll be priced at and will he be in your team next season?

For me it will depend on which club he goes to. I'm not 100% he would be a shoo in from the start.

He's being linked to almost every top-half PL club, wouldn't be surprised if he ends up back here.

If he's anything close to 8.0 he's straight in my team, already proved that he can do the business in the league. And most importantly did it before Liverpool became monstrously good so wouldn't be too worried if he went to Chelsea think he'd still do well

Go for Plea (over Thuram imo)
If you want a differential then go for Niederlechner
If you believe Bayern do well tonight and you'd star him over Haaland, Muller is worth a 2 week punt with Fortuna at the weekend.

Did very well last week. 184 points for a matchday rank of 91st. Brought me from 99th overall to 78th. Only shames were not starring Havertz and having to keep it on Nkunku and bringing in Darida who i've now got to ship right out.

Will depend on the Bayern lineup but this week I'm thinking of doing Schubert and Darida out for Luthe and Kamada. What I do with the third will either be Plea in for Muller, a cheapie in for Katterbach, or if Gnabry is out then Kostic in for him

Okay, that settles the outgoing then! Nice score. I got 144 which was better than my first week but the Freiburg players I brought in failed badly and I didn't move the star to Werner, so could have been higher.

Well done there! 144 for second week playing is a very good score i'd be very pleased and now you can build on it. Freiburg was a tough place to pick from last weekend as there was definitely differential potential and I nearly brought in Grifo. There is split thinking in the fantasy community about assets playing Werder from here on. On one hand they've been whipping boys and are especially susceptible to set pieces, on the other they are a side with too much quality to go down and if they turn around their season they may put together some strong performance as players come back to match fitness. I think Gladbach will do well against them regardless. I expect a couple goals and a great shout output from their players but I think choosing against Bremen will be risky

I honestly don't get the logic about people complaining about a free wildcard, because the ones that have saved it i'd assume would get to keep the one saved too?

If we're working under scenario A) everyone gets 1 wildcard and no more I'd say that was unfair on people who saved theirs

If scenario B) everyone gets 1 wildcard and the ones who saved theirs have an extra 1 to me that's fairest scenario

Scenario c) no free wildcard, if you've used it you've used it= unfair, the whole point of this game is planning for fixtures and form and injuries etc so the recent transfers and wildcards have been railroaded by the virus and the fixtures when they come back could be the opposite of what you planned for

I get it because in the short space of time we have left, the impact of 2 WCs rather than 1 might not be significant compared to 1 WC rather than 0.

True, but people who've already used it didn't get maximum impact from theirs either so it balances out,m

I think everyone gets a free wildcard to increase engagement when it restarts. Let's be honest, pretty much noone was slow wildcarding anyway. I imagine those who saved theirs will essentially have 2 then.

bench boost may be more powerful if played after a wildcard late on if for some reason there are cancellations and rearrangements following covid case breakouts and dgw come into play.

I'm thinking 9 gw with 2 wildcards, a free hit and a bench boost will be fun to navigate.

The key to any chip play will obviously be the fixtures, particularly the first week if extra GWs come in.

If they decide to maybe play just City v Arsenal and Villa v Sheff Utd as an opening 8 blank BGW then that has FH written all over it. If people get a 2nd WC it might be used to get in at least 8-9 'nailed' players from these teams. That might be just about enough to not need to WC back out of immediately the next week, particularly if you need the remaining WC for tactical reasons later on.

If it's a DGW then it becomes a closer call as most people may already have 3-4 of these players already. Some SGWers may have a good fixture that is hard to ignore. A spare WC could still be used like an FH in a later GW with more appeal, while keeping the other WC back for use with the TC/BB chip in a traditional manner (albeit probably in another SGW if they keep the structure to 10 fixtures a week).

If it is a normal GW then I think most people will be happy to just use the 2FT's to go into it.

              All speculation of course...

Chances are, an extra WC would be just for GW39 so FH wouldn't be available like GW1

Yeah I think they would likely use any extra WC as a pure GW39 reset option.

Those who used the Wildcard can have another when the season restarts but must hand back the extra pints they made by using it earlier. 😉

You're suggested those wildcards are reversed and reams reverting to what they were and people get those points? Gotta say in lots of cases people probably would earn more points before a wimdvsdf

depends how big a dose of it you get I think. my sister had it and has been struggling for the past 2.5 months. if its anything like her case, you do not want it. It turned to pneumonia and then fluid on the lungs and then blood clots in the lungs. she is on blood thinners and for about the first time since she first got it is feeling slightly better. she is 50 but fully healthy and had to have 2 stints in hospital.

Not sure what you're reading? As far as the guidance goes, it can range from not even knowing you have it to being hospitalised and needing help breathing

If you're fit and healthy and no underlying conditions the risk is much lower, but it's still not 0

I had the two main symptoms back in December before we really knew what this thing was. Extreme fever, and dry cough. The fever was awful, but it lasted for about three days and then I was okay.
I’m 35, and relatively fit and healthy.
Varies so much from person to person though.
Have you discussed your concerns with your employer? What is it you’ll have to do?

You might still be ok even with a return to work though - if you're in England for example there are ~260,000 diagnosed cases - out of 56,000,000 people... so that's about 55,740,000 people who either haven't tested positive for it, or haven't been tested - so by no means "a matter of time" before you get it

Very crudely (i.e. not accounting for untested cases, or your particular field of work - maybe you are in a higher risk profession with lots of interpersonal contact) you'd have a 260,000/56,000,000 chance of being diagnosed with it - i.e. less than 0.5% chance

And even if you happened to be in the unfortunate 0.5% to test positive - you then have an ~80% chance of having no, or only mild symptoms - so somewhere in the region (conditionally) of a 0.1% chance of getting anything other than the mildest of symptoms at worst - or alternatively a 99.9% chance of being fine if those maths are correct?

So Im going to tell you my OWN experience. Not heard it or read it, it was with me.

Went to the doctor for testing about anti body for this virus, if I have the anti bodies, no one will give me sh!t anymore and Im really fed up with all of this.

I arrive, waiting room, receptionist with mask. Ok. Nobody asks me to put one, which is great. Get in, the doctor is totally relaxed no PPE whatsoever, no gloves no mask, nothing. We go ahead with the test, chit chat and I have to ask, doctor, why you so relaxed I was expecting something diferent...

Reply: "This is totally irrelevant, this virus... well, whatever that is... is amongst us at least since the end of October, which was where the tracing of the first cases of this severe pneumonia with acute respiratory response led us to believe. Most probable is that the vast majority of people already had it, its already totally widespread which makes this lockdown and all this planing total nonsense. The tests used were wrong and the % of infected people is way higher than reported, which makes the % of deadly cases way lower than reported. My bet is you have about the same chance of dying from this as you have from dying from a plane crash."

Non contact training approved last week

                  Contact training approved yesterday

Ceballos “leaked” that a 20th June restart was being planned for

Italy & Spain looking at restarting week before that

France looking at potentially playing again (overruling their previous utilisation of the clause written into their rules that curtailed the league & awarded it to PSG)

Germany already back in action & two full sets of fixtures basically completed with a third this weekend

FPL may already be over for the season though, who knows - the silence is deafening from them

And that’s perhaps understandable in the absence of any concrete direction, let alone a fixture list, but some comms would go a long way as to what they’re thinking

At the moment I have been winging over the last 2 weeks , not sure what to do for this coming weekend is it best to have a none playing bench, very cheap gk and also I am playing with 2 good defs and the rest are very cheap.
                  Cheers

Always better to have a playing bench as you can make subs in the match days
Having two very cheap playing GKs so you can swap them out after a performance is crucial. Luthe is 1.6, Kastenmeier 1.2, Schubert 1.0. The K&S are cheaper but L&K rotate best and both pairings are good on a budget.
Cheap defenders are also important to stock your team with so you can spend elsewhere. Options I rate the highest are Lenz and then Toure. Framberger is an option and Pekarik is not bad (though for how much longer i dont know) but I wouldn't bring in Pekarik against RBL and Framberger has defensive duties normally. Katterbach is perhaps prone to rotation but otherwise is good basement priced fodder. Jakobs will be a good option in the future at 1.9 but i think he'll be rotated this week. Who are your strong 2 defenders?

Defs are kimmi and hakimi and know a lot of money tied up in them but was picking a team with virtually no knowledge of the league

Not a bad thing as they will consistently tick over. If you surround them with starters you should do well

I brought in Uduokhai, Thommy and Skov and my 3 trasnfers. Decent punts? I'm flying pretty blind when it comes to non-star players.

For today I have Mulleer, Sancho and Hinteregger as my 3 stars.

If transfers are already done then I think you're alright. Not my favorite picks to be honest. Udokhai is pretty clean sheet dependent and he plays last on the match day. Thommy is a good choice as he's generally pretty invovled and Fortuna will play well vs Schlake you just might need to replace him before Bayern. Skov is a true differential. If he plays on the wing he's a good pick with those fixtures but if he plays a wingback which he's done for a lot of the season you'll get burned

I would have done Baumgartner and Niederlechner instead of Skov and Thommy but in that price range but those two picks are still good ones its just the Udokhai selection im a little apprehensive of. That and I would have shipped Sancho

Another quick question is always high scoring points each week required to make green arrows as above second week for me first week 100 them this weekend 138 or are we being lucky
                        Cheers

I would focus less on the amount of points you get than your weekly rank. High scores are often influenced by stars on shared players especially in the case of last week. If last week you starred Hakimi and Werner you likely had a high points score but if the rest of your team flopped then perhaps you didn't do so well even if your score is well over 100 because those players are so widely owned and starred. Aim for 130+ each but the thing to focus most on is weekly ranking.

                Gnabry starts
                Sancho on the bench again

Of those two I would star Goretzka.

Virtual fpl: I would like to have Pukki in my team but I can't figure out who to sell - so I guess I should save my free transfer instead. Next gw will probably be just the same but with both Pukki and Ings 🙂

                a. get Pukki but who to sell?
                b. save the transfer

I really want a second City player mainly for that West Ham fixture next week, Sterling has form but Aguero is a lot more explosive.
Thoughts, or is it not worth the investment and go with Salah+Mane instead?

                A) Have Jimenez, Jota & DCL. Sell who for Pukki?

                B) Who to bench from Alonso (TOT), Baldock (LEI), Ward (WAT), Grealish (ARS)?
