Jiménez scores again but fails to dazzle in laboured win over Bournemouth

Wolves 1-0 Bournemouth

  • Goals: Raúl Jiménez (£8.2m)
  • Assists: Adama Traoré (£5.8m)
  • Bonus Points: Jiménez x3, Jonny x2 (£5.4m), Willy Boly x1 (£4.8m), Romain Saïss x1 (£4.6m)

Raúl Jiménez (£8.2m) highlighted his consistency once again as Wolves beat Bournemouth 1-0 but he was not at his usual scintillating best.

The Mexican was arguably on the periphery of Wednesday’s encounter as both sides struggled to offer much for the neutral viewers. While it was a surprisingly dull game, proceedings at Molineux were hardly out of step with other Gameweek 31+ fixtures around the country. Given the circumstances of the Premier League’s three-month lay-off, it makes sense that the midweek round of action would come too soon after Gameweek 30+ for many players to be at 100% capacity.

That said, despite Nuno Espirito Santo deploying him as the central spearhead of Wolves’ 3-4-3 formation, Jiménez found himself drifting wide on occasion at Molineux and, in the end, scored with his only shot of the game.

Will that be of huge concern to his 34.2% ownership with Aston Villa up next? Surely not. The best players in the world manage to score even when they’re having a bad game, right? Jiménez now has four goals in his last five league matches and remains one of the few undroppable options at Nuno’s disposal.

Just as we saw against West Ham, the Mexican stayed on the pitch for 90 minutes, replaced in stoppage time by Daniel Podence (£5.0m), while those around him had their minutes managed more significantly. With nobody else in the squad capable of replicating his duties, another short turnaround before Saturday’s Midlands derby is unlikely to affect Jiménez’s game-time, especially considering how well he has coped with a busy 12 months. There will also a be a full week of recovery for Wolves between their Gameweek 32+ and 33+ fixtures to sit at the back of Nuno’s mind.

Diogo Jota (£6.4m) made a second successive start and, despite another spirited run-out, was replaced by Pedro Neto (£5.0m) on the hour-mark with another blank. The fact that has happened in both Project Restart matches demonstrates how much extra value Fantasy managers get even when spending an additional £1.8m on Jiménez.

Meanwhile, Adama Traoré (£5.8m) got his first start since the resumption of the Premier League but was taken off in a shape-change to 3-5-2 in the 72nd minute. That said, the Spaniard does look a more reliable form of investment than Jota, arguably a decent option to pair with Jiménez in our FPL squads. While Wolves were not particularly incisive against Bournemouth, Traoré’s pace and delivery led to him registering a carbon copy of the assist for Jiménez he provided at the London Stadium. Until someone learns how to deal with him, or the aerial threat of Wolves’ centre-forward, Traoré is sure to get more attacking returns.

However, making the case that he should feature in FPL squads as part of a triple-up continues to be complicated by Wolves’ excellent defence, who face an Aston Villa side in Gameweek 32+ that has toiled in front of goal so far.

It has been widely reported that Nuno’s men have become exceptionally hard to break down since Willy Boly (£4.8m) returned from injury but we will wheel it out once more. They have now kept a total of six clean sheets from a possible following the defender’s Gameweek 25 comeback. For that reason, Matt Doherty (£6.4m), Romain Saïss (£4.6m) and Rui Patrício (£5.2m) remain excellent options for the foreseeable future. Moroccan defender Saïss is still persistently proving great value, picking up bonus points for the third match in succession despite earning a booking against Bournemouth. That was his ninth yellow card of the season, so owners should be conscious that one more would mean a two-match ban.

Wolves defensive credentials are firmly established at this point but they were helped on this occasion by Bournemouth’s anaemic attack. Following their toothless display against Crystal Palace, Eddie Howe went for a 4-5-1 formation with Junior Stanislas (£5.9m) and David Brooks (£6.2m) on the flanks. They could not make up for the absence of Joshua King (£6.1m) though, which left Callum Wilson (£7.4m) isolated in the lone-forward role.

Fantasy managers were probably already targeting the Bournemouth attack on their search for clean sheets, but the appeal of Newcastle, Manchester United and Spurs defenders certainly rose after Bournemouth’s latest outing, as they are set to face them in the next three Gameweeks. Backlines of the Magpies and Red Devils will be especially pleased with Wilson picking up his 10th yellow of the season, consigning him to a two-match ban.

Wolves XI (3-4-3): Patricio; Saiss, Coady, Boly; Jonny, Neves, Moutinho (Gibbs-White 90+1’), Doherty; D Jota (Neto 62’), Jiménez (Podence 90’), Traoré (Dendoncker 73’).

Bournemouth XI (4-5-1): Ramsdale; A Smith, Aké, S Cook, Stacey (L Kelly 82’); Stanislas (Danjuma 66’), Lerma (Solanke 66’), L Cook, Billing (Gosling 50’), Brooks (H Wilson 66’); C Wilson.

Anyone concerned that after the City game Liverpool will start to rotate and bring in more youngsters, so attacking assets in particular at risk?

We might get lucky & see them still needing 2 points going into Villa home

After that it’s probably all bets off though

Very, that's why i am contemplating moving Mane on. If city beat Chelsea and they lose to City i think the Villa game will be their best 11 and a slaughter. Liverpool have pretty consistently beaten City the last couple of years though.

I believe that Klopp may well use the remaining games as a sort of pre season rather than going for record points total. They'll probably ease off with rotation I would think

in my view that means giving them some minutes here and there. Klopp has strong faith in the youngsters and they know that, but he also knows that if the team is going to be moving forward the likes of Minamino, Keita also needs more game time. In some games we will possibly see a rotation system where one of the front three gets benched succesively, first Firm, then Mané etc. And there will be benchings all over the place, even the ones we think is unthinkable.

Not sure about this but how many weeks will there be between this season finishing and the start of the next?

I dont see klopp resdting too many players. I think with 5 subs available he will gradually introduce more youngsters in during the game.

Like we saw yesterday nico and Harvey coming on in later stages.

Klopp will want the players playing together and having that unity again after the break

Looks like the ideal scenario, klopp will never rotate massively.

The thing is, except Villa and Burnley at home all the other games aren't offered for a C material on players that they will probably play 70 mins.

So if we keep Salah/Mane till Villa then you can move on to others and spread funds elsewhere while you can double up on TAA and Robbo or VVD

Thanks. Honestly I can’t bring myself to lose Doherty. Check his last 7 games none less that 6 pointers and where he lost his CS he had 1 goal and 3 assists to compensate that’s getting like TAA silliness.
Agree We no idea who will perform for utd week to week, this was my WC before the SHU Game so not a knee jerk on Martial. But those fixtures and the fact they look more attacking now makes the double up look good.

    TAA stat attacks:

    - He is now level on points with Mane
    - Only 10 points behind Salah for the season
    - Over 30 points clear of the next highest scoring defender
    - Over 50 (five-zero!) points clear of the next highest non-Liverpool defender
    - More points than any striker in the game
    - More points than anyone in the game - bar KDB, Mo & Mane (see above)
    - Most assists (14) in the league apart from KDB (19)
    - 43 appearances since returning from injury in GW26 of last season
    - In those 43 appearances he has accumulated 46 FPL returns
    - I.e. 3 goals, 23 assists & 20 cleansheets

This is getting ridiculous - what price would stop you signing him next year?

    A. 8.0 (he surely won’t be any lower than this??)
    B. 8.5
    C. 9.0
    D. 9.5

I think I’d honestly be fine with D

Great research and a great point....who has been the most expensive defender in fpl and what season?

      1. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus
        • 14 Years
        3 years, 9 months ago

I think Baines, Vidic & Terry have all ben 8.0's at various points (all less points than Robbo's record from last year)

Then there was some sort of ceiling introduced a few seasons back where they seemed very reluctant to price any defender over 7.0

I get the point about the delta between TA's price and other defenders - but if he's anything less than 8.0 he'll surely have 100% ownership, any many would gladly pay much more

Thoughts on when to play the FH?

    - Initial plan was to use it in GW38 but there will be so much unpredictability that it will be impossible to create the best 11 eleven with certainty...and building a team in 15 mins if there are leaks is going to be difficult

    - Looking at alternatives, GW33 seems a good time to play with LIV,MCI, MUN, CHE having plum fixtures. Whilst i currently have 6 players across these teams already, my other 5 players (as it stands) for gw33 i.e.Doc, Jimmy, Sarr, Dcl, Aurier have tough fixtures. Given that all these 5 players have good fixtures after gw33, i won't be able to get rid of them so FH33 seems like a decent option.

Any thoughts/criticism welcome. My team for GW33 as it stands

If the season was suspended again due to Covid-19, a Free Hit would be rather useful. If it's not, GW33 is probably the second best option, behind GW38.

Didn't think Wolves were that bad against Bournemouth.

Bournemouth were very defensive. At times they had two or three on Traore. The fact Wolves won and kept a CS bodes well. Next match in three days then a week off so less chance of rotation.

Doherty is miles better for FPL when both Boly and Traore play. Doherty gets a lot more opportunities to get into the box as Traore goes wide and Boly is good at covering for him defensively.

Anyone else tempted by the FH this week?

Load up on Chelsea and Arsenal along with Wolves and Utd who most probably own already..... struggling to see a better gw, am I missing something?

FA Cup fixtures make it difficult. Are Chelsea and Arsenal going to put out strong teams and rest a few midweek?

I think FH in one of the middle GWs where there will be rotation is an option. Load up on the players who were rested last GW.

You must be ranked in Top 20k to be getting a red arrow with that. Top 10k average is 64 from 9.5 players played out of 12 (captains doubled). Even with Fernandes(c) you would be on over 64 pts with that team.

Would you put Auba in a WC this week and put the C on, knowing that the week after you were a hit to get Salah in for the Villa games. Or just have Salah in WC now and ignore Auba.

Hi All current OR rank is 999 so I am dialling in for some help. 2FT and 0.5itb.

          Pope
          TAA Doherty Boly
          Salah Mane Barnes KDB
          Ings DCL Jimenez

          Button Cantwell Soyuncu Rico

I think I need some united exposure but not sure how to get it. I quite like Salah + Mane for the match after v Villa.

Having Both Salah and Mane kills your team.
If you downgrade one of them you can get Fernandes and upgrade your bench

Very similar team (pope, taa, boly, salah, mane, kdb, dcl, jimi and I have saiss). I can’t decide what to do. Thinking I should get at least one Man U player in and if you take out mane you can get martial and bruno. However, liv look good, will have trained hard and have records to win. So I’m probably keeping until villa and then re-assess rotation risk.

Barnes/ ings -> Martial/ nketiak (with the latter as a norwich punt)

Tbf you are miles higher than me so let me know what you do!

I am looking at upgrading Barnes to martial and downgrading ings to either greenwood or the arsenal striker nketiah.

Salah and mane take up a huge amount of value but if they score 3/4 goals you can expect goal involvement and with a captain can be looking at 30+ points..

That being said a downgrade of Mane allows you to go for the premium Man United assets

If Pepe starts today would you say its then more or less likely he'll start vs Norwich? Not gonna start 3 games in 7 days or whatever it is

They have a fa cup match on Sunday. He could start today get benched on sun and start again midweek.

That's what I was thinking yeah. Could also play tonight and Sunday and not vs Norwich. This is all just adding to the puntiness and making it more exciting to bring him in for a once off 😀
