Jiménez scores again but fails to dazzle in laboured win over Bournemouth

Wolves 1-0 Bournemouth

  • Goals: Raúl Jiménez (£8.2m)
  • Assists: Adama Traoré (£5.8m)
  • Bonus Points: Jiménez x3, Jonny x2 (£5.4m), Willy Boly x1 (£4.8m), Romain Saïss x1 (£4.6m)

Raúl Jiménez (£8.2m) highlighted his consistency once again as Wolves beat Bournemouth 1-0 but he was not at his usual scintillating best.

The Mexican was arguably on the periphery of Wednesday’s encounter as both sides struggled to offer much for the neutral viewers. While it was a surprisingly dull game, proceedings at Molineux were hardly out of step with other Gameweek 31+ fixtures around the country. Given the circumstances of the Premier League’s three-month lay-off, it makes sense that the midweek round of action would come too soon after Gameweek 30+ for many players to be at 100% capacity.

That said, despite Nuno Espirito Santo deploying him as the central spearhead of Wolves’ 3-4-3 formation, Jiménez found himself drifting wide on occasion at Molineux and, in the end, scored with his only shot of the game.

Will that be of huge concern to his 34.2% ownership with Aston Villa up next? Surely not. The best players in the world manage to score even when they’re having a bad game, right? Jiménez now has four goals in his last five league matches and remains one of the few undroppable options at Nuno’s disposal.

Just as we saw against West Ham, the Mexican stayed on the pitch for 90 minutes, replaced in stoppage time by Daniel Podence (£5.0m), while those around him had their minutes managed more significantly. With nobody else in the squad capable of replicating his duties, another short turnaround before Saturday’s Midlands derby is unlikely to affect Jiménez’s game-time, especially considering how well he has coped with a busy 12 months. There will also a be a full week of recovery for Wolves between their Gameweek 32+ and 33+ fixtures to sit at the back of Nuno’s mind.

Diogo Jota (£6.4m) made a second successive start and, despite another spirited run-out, was replaced by Pedro Neto (£5.0m) on the hour-mark with another blank. The fact that has happened in both Project Restart matches demonstrates how much extra value Fantasy managers get even when spending an additional £1.8m on Jiménez.

Meanwhile, Adama Traoré (£5.8m) got his first start since the resumption of the Premier League but was taken off in a shape-change to 3-5-2 in the 72nd minute. That said, the Spaniard does look a more reliable form of investment than Jota, arguably a decent option to pair with Jiménez in our FPL squads. While Wolves were not particularly incisive against Bournemouth, Traoré’s pace and delivery led to him registering a carbon copy of the assist for Jiménez he provided at the London Stadium. Until someone learns how to deal with him, or the aerial threat of Wolves’ centre-forward, Traoré is sure to get more attacking returns.

However, making the case that he should feature in FPL squads as part of a triple-up continues to be complicated by Wolves’ excellent defence, who face an Aston Villa side in Gameweek 32+ that has toiled in front of goal so far.

It has been widely reported that Nuno’s men have become exceptionally hard to break down since Willy Boly (£4.8m) returned from injury but we will wheel it out once more. They have now kept a total of six clean sheets from a possible following the defender’s Gameweek 25 comeback. For that reason, Matt Doherty (£6.4m), Romain Saïss (£4.6m) and Rui Patrício (£5.2m) remain excellent options for the foreseeable future. Moroccan defender Saïss is still persistently proving great value, picking up bonus points for the third match in succession despite earning a booking against Bournemouth. That was his ninth yellow card of the season, so owners should be conscious that one more would mean a two-match ban.

Wolves defensive credentials are firmly established at this point but they were helped on this occasion by Bournemouth’s anaemic attack. Following their toothless display against Crystal Palace, Eddie Howe went for a 4-5-1 formation with Junior Stanislas (£5.9m) and David Brooks (£6.2m) on the flanks. They could not make up for the absence of Joshua King (£6.1m) though, which left Callum Wilson (£7.4m) isolated in the lone-forward role.

Fantasy managers were probably already targeting the Bournemouth attack on their search for clean sheets, but the appeal of Newcastle, Manchester United and Spurs defenders certainly rose after Bournemouth’s latest outing, as they are set to face them in the next three Gameweeks. Backlines of the Magpies and Red Devils will be especially pleased with Wilson picking up his 10th yellow of the season, consigning him to a two-match ban.

Wolves XI (3-4-3): Patricio; Saiss, Coady, Boly; Jonny, Neves, Moutinho (Gibbs-White 90+1’), Doherty; D Jota (Neto 62’), Jiménez (Podence 90’), Traoré (Dendoncker 73’).

Bournemouth XI (4-5-1): Ramsdale; A Smith, Aké, S Cook, Stacey (L Kelly 82’); Stanislas (Danjuma 66’), Lerma (Solanke 66’), L Cook, Billing (Gosling 50’), Brooks (H Wilson 66’); C Wilson.

Unhelpful response but whenever you think your most explosive player is most likely to put another team to the sword, being prepared for the fact that some teams will or will not have something to play for by then.

If you wait until 38, you may have some teams desperate to score goals, which would work in your favour, but you may not have the likes of Salah or KdB playing 90 minutes by then. I would suggest someone like a nailed United attacker against Bournemouth at home would be a reasonable punt.

Remember TC is a wildly unpredictable chip, even in a DGW. Your player could get injured in the first minute, or get a red card, or score a hat trick or anything in between. So I wouldn't overthink it.

I would like to play it much earlier but the GWs coming quick so don't know who will start or play 90 minutes. The reason behind last GW TC chip on salah/mane is because I think they would be chasing Golden boot.

You can use this to your advantage though. If a key player is rested for a game or taken off at 60 you can be as sure as you can ever be that they will play a bigger role in the next match.

What site developments would the community like to see on FFS in the off-season (albeit a shorter one than usual, presumably)?

For me, the one that is top of the list is something that I discussed with Geoff a little while back and that's the ability to use FFS to easily view your entire team and its fixtures for weeks further ahead than the one coming.

One glaring omission on the FPL site is that you can look ahead one week, but it's really hard to plan transfers if you can't see a snapshot of who each of your team is due to face in the coming weeks. You can use the FPL and the FFS ticker for individual players, but you can't see the whole team at a glance and know whether it is in good shape and might require hits/WC/FC in, or leading up to a future gameweek.

I would hope that it would be a fairly simply development to make the RMT and the fixture ticker speak to each other and allow us to skip ahead to see the general state of our entire teams in a given future gameweek.

I would like FFS to improve this forum which is a cluttered mess. FISO style standard forum would be much better. Geoff told me well over a year ago that they were working on this but still nothing has changed.

Yeah still a priority, and the plan for it is largely in place - a few things still need working out and then it can get started.

Agree, it's surprising that there is no integration with your fpl team on this website. The members area is already 'talking' to the fpl site, so it shouldn't be difficult to integrate your team into the RMT tool.

      1) The mobile version of this site great, it'll be even better if we can have a mobile app (I understand it's probably very difficult to do this for the members area, but forum would be a great start)

      2) The ability to mute/block users so you don't see their comments and replies. Might sound harsh, but would resolve a lot of complaints about spamming, especially closer to deadlines. We had this issue big time this week with it being a midweek 5pm deadline so I decided to post a comment about helping if people replied, and managed to reply to every single question before the deadline.

This has been my first year as a member of FFS. I found the members area and associated statistics very useful in the pre season for deciding on a team.
I very much enjoy the articles and have found them useful in plotting my way through the season.
An area I would like to see improve is the comments section.
This is just personal preference, but I find it rather disheartening when I've read a good article and am hoping for some discussion and nearly all the comments are just asking for advice on subs or RMT type posts.
If this kind of discussion could be syphoned off somewhere, that would be an improvement in my eyes.

Ideally, for me, we have comments under an article relate only to that article, and then also have a general chat.

Comments would be viewable under an article about that subject, but also every comment from every article would filter through to the general chat, so people still can get a view of everything that's happening.

The implementation of this obviously still needs to happen but we're getting closer to being able to do that

Agree with this 100%, I am intrigued as to what the updates will be. I suggested each article gets a curated hot topic for it at the start of the season.

Hopefully this solution is better then my idea but as you mention, it is disheartening to have 0 discussion over articles which clearly have love & care put into them.

Also a place where comments are members only so statistics can be cited in as much detail as required would be a nice idea. Even if it's once a gameweek or something. Some hot topics have this feature, but it feels rare.

As a general update, we have some new resources in place and are starting to really move on a few big things.

There have been lots of smaller updates (new stats, upgrades to the ticker, optimizations) done recently but I think we'll have some substantial upgrades coming soon. Largely focused on the Members Area but elsewhere as well.

Including seeing a few weeks ahead!

      Site is great. Improvements:
      - comments on articles relate to the article
      - each week there are separate forums for those who are going to WC/ specific tactics. Nightmare last week scrolling through to find other FH teams
      - maybe some recognition to show you have commented on lots of other peoples questions (and therefore make it more likely that ppl answer your questions)

I would like to see more articles, particularly using data, on the strategy behind the game itself:

      - Fixtures vs form: a data analytical review
      - Nailed minutes vs explosiveness: Is it better to have a rotation risk / player who may be subbed off earlier who is explosive vs a nailed player who is less explosive
      - The value of xG, xA, xGC and in particular, what is really considered to be overperforming and underperforming and should be considered statistically significant and not just random variance
      - How to manage big hitters and maximising value across your squad
      - Data analysis on use of chips and when they have worked best
      - What do we mean by 'form'? and how many weeks back should we look to consider whether a player is 'in form' or not?

          Thanks!

Was wondering whether it was something Ragabolly could help with. If he has the data then with his python experience I would hope he can run regression analysis and other statistical methods to see if there are any interesting relationships / insights. Then the FFS team can take his analysis and present it in a digestible way.

Good topics, another is "match fitness". I remember some analysis by Daniel Finkelstein at least a decade ago which suggested that match fitness as a separate conditioning period to physical fitness - i.e. that a player is rusty upon return to action even if he is 100% physically fit - is pretty much a myth. It would be interesting to explore such topics.

Other statistical analyses would include home vs away, weather conditions, and distance travelled to away matches vs away performances.

I suspect the proffessor mnows this but there is more than just form vs fixtures.

        Match prediction breaks down into:
        Tactical Matchup
        Form
Condition (this includes fatigue, diet, relationships etc)

This third item largely gets ignored as it is so hard to track let alone associate factors to.

I agree. But we can only work with what we know / the data we have.

We have a fixture ticker. We have points scored over different ranges of gameweeks as well as the underlying data for those gameweeks (xG, xA, xGC, shots, big chances created etc). So the analysis of form when accounting for fixtures has to be possible. It would give us some insight on how much weight to give to form vs fixtures. It might tell us that neither matter that much. But knowing the results would be useful.

I find the members section quite difficult to navigate on the mobile - you have too zoom right in to click on the tabs you need (e.g. player stats) and I often click the wrong one (possibly fat fingers!). Larger icons and easier scrolling for mobile would help I think.

I really enjoyed Ragbolly’s virtual FF. Loads of work went into it and I’d like to see it as a light hearted yearly summer event, maybe alongside a charity? I’d happily pay £5 to enter each June if that money went to a good cause.

Keeps some comments live over the quiet periods too.

On a more general note. There are badges next to names for years here etc.

Could there be a few more categories eg
        - top 10k / 1k finishes
        - gold / silver / bronze for number of helpful upvoted contributions?

Idea being to quickly see comments from truly experienced players. Whose advice / input should carry more weight.

This would be fantastic - badges for top 10k's/1k's is a great idea

Maybe one star for each - silver for 10k's, gold for 1k's or something of that ilk?

We'd straight away see some folks on here with stars after their names - they don't come easily 🙂

This would be a huge improvement and very welcome.

It's been mentioned before, but the ability on the season ticker to delete a column where you might be planning to free hit, and also make it possible to drag teams up and down the ticker, as it takes so long to use the arrows they're unusable.

      1. For it to be possible to see the weekly match stats of a player in a grid form. eg left column the individual GWs then the the "goal threat" stats for each of those GWs .
2.A few more print friendly options eg the fixture ticker or tables.

      Couple for the members area!

      1. In the player comparison tool - Can we get ability to filter for multiple non-sequential gameweeks - e.g. Filter for Salah's underlying stats in the gameweeks when Mane didn't start - all on one page, without having to open multiple tabs (Same for team comparison)
      2. In those underlying stats - could we also get the "overlying stats" added please - i.e. FPL points
      3. On the "matches" screen - this might sound mad - but could we please get them put in REVERSE chronological order rather than the current order? Its annoying as the season goes on to have to scroll further & further down the page whereas if most recent gameweek was at the top would be very handy (/lazy delete appropriate 😉 )

It would also be nice to somehow see how much XG each Big chance contributed

Maybe a separate box for that since those two must be amongst the most used/most popular stats?

It still goes back to the infamous (GW1) Kevin Mcgoldrick-gate which just called into question the usefulness of both metrics:

        - McGoldrick 2 big chances, total XG for entire match of 0.41
        - Rashford 2 big chances, total XG for entire match of 1.20

          Some more:

          1. Could we be allowed to add more than 10x fields into custom tables - maybe this is already allowed but can't figure out how... most of the predefined tables have 15-20 columns for example

          2. The "Overall Points" metric shows total points for season - but when you filter a custom table for a gameweek range it doesn't adjust & keeps showing the season total - could we either get it to adjust to the same gameweek range as the table, or alternatively another attribute that does this - e.g. "gameweek range points etc"

          Thanks!

            Also

When using the “player stats”screen - on the positional listings - if filtered on individual players by ticking them - each time you change either the GW range or the statistical display groupings, the whole thing resets, forcing you to go back & re-tick the list of players you were checking - very annoying (e.g. if looking at only the defenders from Burnley, or only the midfielders from Man City etc)

Could we get it so the players you selected/ticked STAY selected/ticked when changing the GW or the stats tabs at the top?

              Per below:

Can we get tracking of team news success rates from the media + a scorecard/accuracy check:

              https://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2020/07/03/which-premier-league-teams-have-the-best-and-worst-remaining-fixtures-2/?hc_page=14&hc_sort_by=comment_date#hc_comment_22004549

Maybe a new underlying stat for measuring team news articles content accuracy: xB - “expected bollocks” 🙂

As in - that mirror article about Bruno Pogba has an xB of 1.00

I think those of us with Bruno and Rashford are thinking about a triple up. The big drawcard is that Martial was in great positions and Utd have something to play for.

Triple up attack seems too much, and more difficult when also having Utd defender or GK. I'm thinking swapping Rash+5th mid to Martial + Nketiah, but probably not worth a hit,.

I was impressed with AWB. He's really starting to get forward. He'll be in my WC side in a couple of weeks. Monitoring how Pogba affects Bruno vs Brighton. Rash is also a near cert for me also given lack of striker options elsewhere.

If I had him, great, but I don't, and I can't fit him into my current team structure, so am just going to suck it up.

Bruno can outscore him in the next game, or rashford, or pogba. The points will be shared around those players.

I have Bruno and Rashford, people acting on here like Rashford was a failure, I'll take his 9 points every single gameweek at this price thank you very much!

I’ve got myself into a bit of a knot.

Jota is not firing and therefore my strike force is weak. However my midfield delivering points.

Have 0.3 itb and WC and BB available - 2FT

    McCarthy Martinez
    TAA Maguire Lascelles Cathcart Cahill
    Mane Salah KDB Son Bruno
    Jota long DCL

I am desperate to get rashford in but I can’t do that without losing either

Well, yeah, in top 10k he is only at 50%, that is for one of the best most explosive players in the league going for golden boot.

Past couple of seasons he'd be sitting at 80-90% ownership in top 10k, the more people that pass him up, all the better for me.

Everytime he hauls I'm catching half the people inside the top 10k.

How much do people think Doherty is going to outscore Boly by to be worth the extra 1.7? They pick up the same clean sheet points by being in the same defense and I'd more surprised to see Boly rested than Doherty since Boly has played every single minute while fit. I know Doherty is unlikely to get benched but if he were to be that is a massive swing in Boly's favour surely?

Likewise I think Boly is more likely to pickup bonus points having picked up 10BP in 15 games compared to Doherty's 12 in 29, which should help reduce the impact of a Doherty goal/assist in the run in.

So far this season Doherty has 4 goals and 6 assists but 4 of those 10 contributions came in the last five GWs and he has already beaten his contributions from last season by one (an extra assist) so isn't it more likely he reverts to his norm in the run in or am I just over complicating this for myself and should just get Doherty in?

Agree with this assessment, I think he is a good pick and Wolves are quite tight at the back I'm just not sure the attacking threat is worth such an outlay, especially when Boly scored the same number of goals as Doherty last season

This is quite good. I don't think there's a 1.7m gulf between the two of them. I think Boly is just fine for Wolves defense coverage.

Boly is less likely to be rested for sure. I feel Doherty is an excellent option when Adama is benched. In the 343 setup like yesterday however Boly offers equal value.
If you have $ to spare go for Doherty and he will reward you with a double digit haul at some point for sure

I had draft of Rui - TAA, Maguire, Doherty in my backline WC coming into this week

Then realised the DDB - TAA - Doherty - Saiss gives same cs cover, and Saiss decent attack for 0.6 less, so went with that.

For GW33 - lose Ings for:

    A) Mahrez (-4)
    B) Rashford
    C) Martial
    D) Keep/Do something else

I'm planning a double switch and to lose Ings as my 7th attacker while picking up some fodder to fund the moves.

I can't afford Son, but can get anyone up to 9.0m pretty easily.

I assume you have Bruno already? I would probably go for Rashford out of those options right now but in two weeks time that could change, Mahrez could reward you as a more differential pick just as City's fixtures turn

        Yep I have Bruno already.

Mahrez was my first instinct, but I'll admit I was impressed by United. If Martial scores again next week it's going to be very hard not to put him in.

I furiously debated the Martial vs Rashford argument on my wildcard but i have to say Martial is very streaky and when he plays well he plays very well so I don't think getting him in is a bad option but he just feels like an injury waiting to happen these days

      Rashford.

I trust that he'll play, and less likely get a random injury where ends up missing a long period despite only being 'out for this game' as we've seen before.

I could be wrong, but I think he is safe, it's only if you get 10 before GW 32.

He is on 9, and next GW is 32, so he can't hit 10 before 32.

The next limit is 15 before GW 38.

      McCarthy - Krul
TAA- VVD - Doherty - Alonso - Lascelles
      Salah (c) - Fernandes - KDB - Saka - Cantwell
      Jiminez - Rashford - DCL

Not keen on Cantwell but not worth getting rid as won't play him again.

Yep - I'm going 433 to finish the season. Going big in defence for the last 5 games looks like a good option.

I will have TAA, VVD, Doherty and either Laporte or Alonso.

Minimal rotation risk with defenders, big upside.

Ings: 5 points per game at 7.2m

Jimenez: 5.3 points per game at 8.3m

Starting to wonder what makes Jimenez a better option irrespective of fixtures.

Both not going to be explosive but both will keep on ticking the points over. Is Ings not more value for money?

Jimenez has better fixtures. Ings after next week is running next into MCI, eve, mun.

That's dire as an attacker honestly. Those 3 teams are arguably along with Liverpool the strongest defensively in the league.

He's insanely good. Had a period where he struggled but absolutely brilliant now. It's hard to compare him to a DM from the past, he's someone who shields well, closes space, recovers and everything thing a DM does etc, but his ability to start attacks and passing range is just as good. A complete footballer really

Just depends what you do with the cash. DCL was threatening enough from what I saw, and could have been played through late on if Kean was able to get his head up and look at what is going on around him!

It’d be to get Martial this week and Mo TC next.

        Tammy to Nketiah
        Vardy to Rashford
        Sarr to Mo TC

        Cumulative -8 leaving me

        Mo KdB Martial Bruno Son
        Rashford Jim Nketiah

Rushed into FT to get Doherty already have Boly & looking deeper numbers are similar.

    So thinking of WC this,

    Pope,
    Trent, Doherty, Aurier
    Salah, KDB, Fernandes, Sarr,
    Jimmy, Rashford, Vardy

    McCarthy, Boly, Barnes, Taylor

    To this team?

    DDG,
    Trent, Boly, Aurier
    Son, KDB, Salah, Bruno
    Rashford, Vardy, Jimenez

    Martinez, Saka, Lamptey, Taylor

Yes or just chill for now?

    Still got BB, TC

Its basically Pope / Doh / Sarr vs DDG / Boly / Son in your starting lineup.
