Jiménez scores again but fails to dazzle in laboured win over Bournemouth

Wolves 1-0 Bournemouth

  • Goals: Raúl Jiménez (£8.2m)
  • Assists: Adama Traoré (£5.8m)
  • Bonus Points: Jiménez x3, Jonny x2 (£5.4m), Willy Boly x1 (£4.8m), Romain Saïss x1 (£4.6m)

Raúl Jiménez (£8.2m) highlighted his consistency once again as Wolves beat Bournemouth 1-0 but he was not at his usual scintillating best.

The Mexican was arguably on the periphery of Wednesday’s encounter as both sides struggled to offer much for the neutral viewers. While it was a surprisingly dull game, proceedings at Molineux were hardly out of step with other Gameweek 31+ fixtures around the country. Given the circumstances of the Premier League’s three-month lay-off, it makes sense that the midweek round of action would come too soon after Gameweek 30+ for many players to be at 100% capacity.

That said, despite Nuno Espirito Santo deploying him as the central spearhead of Wolves’ 3-4-3 formation, Jiménez found himself drifting wide on occasion at Molineux and, in the end, scored with his only shot of the game.

Will that be of huge concern to his 34.2% ownership with Aston Villa up next? Surely not. The best players in the world manage to score even when they’re having a bad game, right? Jiménez now has four goals in his last five league matches and remains one of the few undroppable options at Nuno’s disposal.

Just as we saw against West Ham, the Mexican stayed on the pitch for 90 minutes, replaced in stoppage time by Daniel Podence (£5.0m), while those around him had their minutes managed more significantly. With nobody else in the squad capable of replicating his duties, another short turnaround before Saturday’s Midlands derby is unlikely to affect Jiménez’s game-time, especially considering how well he has coped with a busy 12 months. There will also a be a full week of recovery for Wolves between their Gameweek 32+ and 33+ fixtures to sit at the back of Nuno’s mind.

Diogo Jota (£6.4m) made a second successive start and, despite another spirited run-out, was replaced by Pedro Neto (£5.0m) on the hour-mark with another blank. The fact that has happened in both Project Restart matches demonstrates how much extra value Fantasy managers get even when spending an additional £1.8m on Jiménez.

Meanwhile, Adama Traoré (£5.8m) got his first start since the resumption of the Premier League but was taken off in a shape-change to 3-5-2 in the 72nd minute. That said, the Spaniard does look a more reliable form of investment than Jota, arguably a decent option to pair with Jiménez in our FPL squads. While Wolves were not particularly incisive against Bournemouth, Traoré’s pace and delivery led to him registering a carbon copy of the assist for Jiménez he provided at the London Stadium. Until someone learns how to deal with him, or the aerial threat of Wolves’ centre-forward, Traoré is sure to get more attacking returns.

However, making the case that he should feature in FPL squads as part of a triple-up continues to be complicated by Wolves’ excellent defence, who face an Aston Villa side in Gameweek 32+ that has toiled in front of goal so far.

It has been widely reported that Nuno’s men have become exceptionally hard to break down since Willy Boly (£4.8m) returned from injury but we will wheel it out once more. They have now kept a total of six clean sheets from a possible following the defender’s Gameweek 25 comeback. For that reason, Matt Doherty (£6.4m), Romain Saïss (£4.6m) and Rui Patrício (£5.2m) remain excellent options for the foreseeable future. Moroccan defender Saïss is still persistently proving great value, picking up bonus points for the third match in succession despite earning a booking against Bournemouth. That was his ninth yellow card of the season, so owners should be conscious that one more would mean a two-match ban.

Wolves defensive credentials are firmly established at this point but they were helped on this occasion by Bournemouth’s anaemic attack. Following their toothless display against Crystal Palace, Eddie Howe went for a 4-5-1 formation with Junior Stanislas (£5.9m) and David Brooks (£6.2m) on the flanks. They could not make up for the absence of Joshua King (£6.1m) though, which left Callum Wilson (£7.4m) isolated in the lone-forward role.

Fantasy managers were probably already targeting the Bournemouth attack on their search for clean sheets, but the appeal of Newcastle, Manchester United and Spurs defenders certainly rose after Bournemouth’s latest outing, as they are set to face them in the next three Gameweeks. Backlines of the Magpies and Red Devils will be especially pleased with Wilson picking up his 10th yellow of the season, consigning him to a two-match ban.

Wolves XI (3-4-3): Patricio; Saiss, Coady, Boly; Jonny, Neves, Moutinho (Gibbs-White 90+1’), Doherty; D Jota (Neto 62’), Jiménez (Podence 90’), Traoré (Dendoncker 73’).

Bournemouth XI (4-5-1): Ramsdale; A Smith, Aké, S Cook, Stacey (L Kelly 82’); Stanislas (Danjuma 66’), Lerma (Solanke 66’), L Cook, Billing (Gosling 50’), Brooks (H Wilson 66’); C Wilson.

Let's make a list of lesser owned players who can help in covering up ground for those trailing in MLs.

Martial (if your rivals have Rashford)
    Pulisic
    Alonso
    Azpi
    Foden
    Mahrez
    Mount/Willian?

I hate myself for writing this but in theory.... Aubameyang

Greenwood is an interesting option if he has now nailed down a starting spot.

Just double/triple up on teams you think will do well.

Go Mane + Salah for instance. Or triple MUN attack. Or double Wolves defense. Or Spurs double. Don't take wild punts like Azpiliceta... Take measured risks with proven teams and hope they go above and beyond.

Is Foden at 5.1 a viable pick (to play on a good fixture and bench for average fixtures) given MCI have nothing to play for and plenty of rotation expected rest of the season?

I think Foden will get a lot of game time but deciding when to bench him/ when not to will be a complete lottery.

Could work out great or you could end up playing him for his 1 point cameos and benching his big hauls

I actually think Pep will be desperate to win tonight (despite what he said about resting players).

The reason: so he can then beat Liverpool in a must win game and ‘prove’ that City might not win the league this year but they are still the team to beat.

I might be wrong of course.

I think the difference was that Chelsea didn't want Spurs to win the title for obvious reasons. I'm not sure, but I think Chelea fans would rather want Man City to win the title than Liverpool

Thoughts on that Maguire disallowed goal? VAR were never going to overturn the refs call, but if he didn't call it then I doubt VAR would have chalked it off either. Jags just got squashed in between people jumping. I've seen Maguire do a lot worse and get away with it.

    Clutching I know.

That United attack looks great now, an unbelievable contrast from earlier in the season when they looked dull, out of ideas and predictable.

Jesus is on my radar from 33.

Don’t particularly rate DCL - fairly modest returns really since the Ancellotti bounce. Great stats of course 🙂

Rashford yes of course but with United defender I’m left looking at the choice between him and Martial - even before this week seemed a 50/50 to me.

Yes I’m theory as there are not real standout striker options and a wealth or riches in defence and midfield.

I never like to go 4-5-1 though as it’s pretty inflexible
And a disaster if your striker gets injured as you obv have to have at least 1 striker in a valid team.

In summary: if I was braver I’d go 4-5-1 but I won’t because I’m dull

    B. Azpi / Saka

I already have Patricio and Jimenez - and although fixtures are great I have the the fear for a triple up on wolves.
Also is a chelsea asset required?? Trying to gain some footing on my work ML. Everyone has doherty and the usual suspects, just wondering if a chelsea asset like Azpi or Mount are worth a shot??

If anyone could advise, aiming to catch the leader in our mini league. I am 40 points behind. I only have free hit chip left.

    Currently my team is

    Pope
    Boly, TAA, Aaron's
    Salah, Bruno, Martial, KDB
    DCL, Rashford, Jiminez

Subs - Saka, Tanganga, Taylor, Mccarthy

I am thinking of working towards

Out - Pope, DCL and Salah
In - Ederson, Son and Kane

Am i mad to think of taking Salah out? I just think once they win the league Klopp will rotate a lot and I want players that have something to play for still.

Plus my opponent does not have any spurs players so thought could be a good differential. Apologies for the long post

I could be about to get back-to-back triple digits because of Martial (C). I've finally had a wildcard team where it does well in its first gameweek rather than the usual where it is outscored by my pre-wildcard team!

So this might sound crazy to some here but i am thinking about switching to a 451 with a power 5 mid and Jimmy up front.

Basically, even though they are similar priced, do you think the likes of Doherty or Van Dijk can outscore DCL?

      I could outscore DCL

What would the midfield be? I feel like there's enough cheap/semi-expensive forwards to justify having 2 or 3 (DCL, Jimmy, Jesus, Rashford, Ings). Kinda depends on the 4 and the 5.

        Salah KDB Son Martial Bruno

I could get Rashford as second striker but would mean 5th attacker would be someone like Saka

I mean that is a sexy midfield so I think if that's what is the more exciting option for you, then go for it. There's a lot of points in that.

How many do you have left to play this GW? Just the 1 (KDB) here.

Massively lucked-out with a TAA cap yesterday.

Oh if Sarr could just do something useful for once (spoiler: he will get 2 points max)

    This team for GW32+
    Henderson
    TAA AWB Doherty
    KDB Bruno Son Martial Mount
    Jiminez DCL
    (Leno Nketiah Lund Egan)

    GW33 thinking of:
    Son - Salah
Which do you prefer to fund that:
    A) Leno to Martinez
    B) Mount to Foden
    C) Mount to Traore
    D) Lund to 4.3 (Holgate/Lascelles/C.Taylor)

More crazy to still have Grealish. I have him too, and he's on the bench for sure.

Villa seem to have improved a bit defensively at the expense of their attack. Wolves defence hardly lets in any goals with Boly playing. I don’t think Grealish is on pens either?

Famous last words but hard to see Grealish getting a big haul. Mahrez is class so is a must and Norwich are abysmal.

          But obviously it can backfire!

Thoughts on Bruno now Pog is back?
Really rate the guy in real life, but is he value for FF now?

Pogba's return only makes the attack more potent. Whether that benefits Bruno or Martial more remains to be seen. Obviously, Martial profited a lot more yesterday but I think it's a call to be made at least after the Brighton game where you'd have a slightly larger sample size.

      I'm keeping 100%.

      - Very likely stays on pens.
      - Only one game where he's blanked.
      - Has been the form attacking player since Jan.
      - Multiple ways to points, stats still very good.
      - Man U fixtures excellent.
      - Still strong chance Pogba doesn't start every game as he's eased back.

But Bruno didn’t score any points this week so he must be a terrible option surely?!

The fact remains that Bruno is still on all set-pieces. He'll score from penalties and he'll get assists from free kicks and corners. Maguire literally scored one yesterday which was ruled out, next time it could count. Open play was never Bruno's biggest strength

What are people's thoughts on Jesus?

Looking like Aguero out until 37+ at least, and surely won't be rushed back. With Sane leaving, there's no reason to give him starts either.

We thinking this means Jesus or Sterling as the striker? Does it also mean Mahrez a good option with his consistent fitness and form?

Any City fans out there good at the Pep Roulette guessing game?

Very tempted by Aubameyang to Jesus after GW 32+....

Good option but I feel there are better options up front for cheaper. KDB, Mahrez, and Sterling all seem more appealing.

I decided on Mahrez due to more minutes and just as deadly but cheaper............with no Aguero Pep likely to keep Jesus fit for CL too.......

Three things have fisted my season:

    1) Captain choices
    2) No Vardy
    3) Faith in United and Martial when they sucked and now they are all the rage

This game is all about captain choices.

You can finish top 100k getting them wrong regularly but for a great rank you’ve got to nail them more weeks than not.

Doherty AWB and Aurier come before him in the pecking order. An argument could even be made for Lascelles because Callum Wilson is out. TAA really ought to be in there though.
