Ancelotti downplays injury to Richarlison as Vardy and Calvert-Lewin blank again

Everton 2-1 Leicester City

  • Goals: Richarlison (£8.3m), Gylfi Sigurdsson (£7.3m) | Kelechi Iheanacho (£5.7m)
  • Assists: Anthony Gordon (£4.5m), Lucas Digne (£5.7m) | None
  • Bonus: Sigurdsson x3, Iheanacho x2, Gordon x1

Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£6.5m) and Jamie Vardy (£9.7m) remain goalless since the Premier League’s restart in mid-June, with both popular Fantasy Premier League forwards blanking in Wednesday’s meeting between Everton and Leicester City at Goodison Park.

The pair managed just one shot between them – a blocked one, at that – on Merseyside, as unrest grows in the Fantasy community: Vardy and Calvert-Lewin are the first and third most-sold FPL forwards of Gameweek 33+ at the time of writing.

It’s sometimes difficult to measure Vardy’s performances, as he has made a habit out of bagging huge hauls despite being anonymous for large periods of games.

He’s the jazz of FPL: it’s about the notes you don’t see, the off-the-ball runs and intelligent movement that can’t be measured by basic underlying stats.

He seldom needs a glut of chances, either, with his goal conversion rate of 30.2% the best among active Fantasy forwards this season.

Two goals in ten matches (both against Aston Villa) tells its own story, however, and he again looked well off his best against the Toffees.

Kelechi Iheanacho (£5.7m) was sent on at half-time to give Vardy some support up top and the Nigerian posed much more of a threat, linking up well with Leicester’s midfield and getting into some promising positions.

If there was some encouragement, it was that Vardy was involved in both of Iheanacho’s big chances after his introduction.

It was the senior striker whose flick had set Iheanacho free in the box for the Foxes’ deficit-halving goal in the 50th minute, although he was deprived of an assist as Mason Holgate (£4.3m) wellied the ball against the Nigeria international’s face and past Jordan Pickford (£5.2m).

Vardy’s knock-down then presented Iheanacho with an excellent opportunity to equalise a quarter of an hour later, only for the budget forward to slice his effort over.

It wouldn’t be a surprise to see Iheanacho start against Crystal Palace this weekend, it’s just whether it’s alongside Vardy or, unthinkably, instead of him.

Harvey Barnes‘ (£6.0m) position looks in even greater jeopardy.

The Leicester winger, in such great form before lockdown, was hooked at the interval as Brendan Rodgers moved from a 4-1-4-1 to a 4-4-2, with James Maddison (£7.4m) brought on in his place.

Maddison had been an injury doubt going into the game but transformed his side’s display after the break, drifting across the frontline and probing just outside the box.

Speaking of his half-time system and personnel changes, Rodgers – whose side have worryingly won just one of their last eight games – said:

We’ve had to try and change it at half-time to rescue the game. We get an early goal in the second half, and then we were much, much better, which makes it equally as frustrating because we really set out to start with that tempo and aggression, and we didn’t do that.

It felt we had enough of the ball. We got into some really good areas, we just couldn’t quite find that final bit of creativity that could get us the goal. Then, it ended up being a disappointing result for us.

While Vardy has struggled for chances since the restart, Calvert-Lewin has been getting plenty of them: Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.0m) is currently the only forward to have had more shots from Gameweek 30+ onwards.

Only one effort was registered against the Foxes but Calvert-Lewin did have another excellent opportunity to score, racing through on goal late in the first half only to allow Caglar Soyuncu (£4.9m) to get back and shoulder him off the ball.

FPL managers will likely cut Calvert-Lewin more slack than Vardy given the price difference (and the fact that he is getting into the right positions) but with Spurs, an in-form Southampton and Wolves up next, the fixtures aren’t outstanding.

At least Calvert-Lewin offers a relative security of starts, having been named in every single Everton starting XI since Carlo Ancelotti’s appointment.

He and Richarlison (£8.3m) have been the strike pairing in every league match when fit and available and the Brazilian opened the scoring on Wednesday, finishing smartly after some fine work from budget FPL forward Anthony Gordon (£4.5m) down the left flank.

Richarlison almost added to his tally but sliced wide from a good position just before half-time and his afternoon was brought to a halt in the 57th minute as he limped from the field of play.

Ancelotti downplayed the severity of the Brazil international’s issue after full-time, however, saying:

It was only a knock on his ankle, he will recover without problem.

There wasn’t to be a third straight clean sheet for the Toffees but there was more encouragment for those FPL managers who own Holgate et al, with the back four all excellent and Leicester’s solitary goal freakish in nature.

Lucas Digne (£5.7m) underscored his attacking threat with an admittedly fortuitous assist for Gylfi Sigurdsson‘s (£7.3m) penalty – Wilfried Ndidi (£5.0m) handling the Frenchman’s cross – and later went on to create a good opening for Richarlison before seeing a shot of his own almost deflect in.

Everton XI (4-4-2): Pickford; Coleman, Keane, Holgate, Digne; Iwobi (Mina 68′), Andre Gomes, Sigurdsson, Gordon (Bernard 79′); Calvert-Lewin, Richarlison (Davies 57′).

Leicester City XI (4-1-4-1): Schmeichel; Justin, Evans, Soyuncu, Chilwell; Ndidi; Albrighton (Gray 81′), Tielemans (Perez 81′), Praet (Maddison 45′), Barnes (Iheanacho 45′); Vardy.

Currently playing 3-4-3 with TAA, Doherty and Lascelles/Holgate rotation

Really want AWB, and wondering if I shift formation and free up cash:

    a) J Robinson + DCL => AWB + Nketiah (4-4-2) (0.7 ITB)
    b) Lascelles + Son => AWB + Mahrez (3-4-3) (0.1 ITB)

Lets be real here. If greenwood didn't score/assist last game, you wouldn't even think hes nailed to start (James still could start, no one knows). And now, you're putting him over Jimi who's up against a leaky Arsenal?

                  Now, come on

I think you're going a bit overboard with the hyperbole, that's all.

Greenwood didn't just score, he also played well. And I think it's a reasonable reason to think he's likely to start based on this (amongst other factors). Being recent doesn't make the rationale less legitimate. In fact, you could say it makes it more legitimate.

He looks a solid and hungry goalscorer in a team in attacking form, that emphasises attack, with youthful competition for places. Jimenez is quality, but more of a cog in a system designed to win games by one or two goals. He may also get a rest at some point. No one knows.

Arsenal's defence is not great, but not terrible, and improving. They make some big mistakes, seemingly frequently, but not really, in the grand scheme of a whole season (it's not every game they gift goals). Bournemouth's defence is pretty poor, and they just conceded 4 goals to Newcastle.

I can understand someone preferring Jimenez to Greenwood this coming GW. I may even change my mind. But Jimenez wouldn't outscore Greenwood in these fixtures 999/1000 games if we could simulate that.

On your point of Wolves system is designed to win games by one or two goals - Jimi has hands in the majority of the goals they score. When he scores and game is won by 1 or 2 goals as you say, he usually gets max BPS, and that shows since he is ranked third in all BPS. His goals are essentially 7 pointers.

On your point of youthful competition for places. The chance that Greenwood is benched is much higher than Jimi. Jimi basically has no one on the team that can play his position, where there are a couple for Greenwood.

On your point on Arsenals defense is not terrible. I think this is more sarcastic than my exaggerated stat.

I didn't think I would have to go so in detail about an exaggerated stat, but I also didn't think someone would take it so seriously either.

                        Just more hyperbole.

-Jimi has hands in the majority of the goals they score.
                        - His goals are essentially 7 pointers.
                        - Arsenal's defence is terrible:

All of this is way off the mark and/or out of context.

And Greenwoods 1G, 1A isn't taken out of context? Since you take everything so literally, I take back 99.9, and reduce it to 98.2463564.

I don't see how it's taken out of context. We've literally been contextualising it in this thread.

I reacted to your 99.9 hyperbole with "come on, now", but then you seemed to take your own 'exaggerated stat' seriously. I think that's why we're still engaging in this nonsense.

Btw "His goals are essentially 7 pointers" is taken out of context because you are not taking into account that Greenwood may also get bonus points if he scores a goal or 3.

Basically, if Greenwood starts, I think he is likely to score higher than Jimenez. I don't think that's particularly outlandish. Have a nice day.

I do think you've missed the fact that Greenwood was the only one of United's front 5 to not get taken off during the game against Brighton. He is by no means as nailed as people are making it out to be. I wouldn't be surprised if James starts against Bournemouth and Greenwood against Villa and Southampton.

Yeah this is a fair response. The main factor in the decision would be figuring out how likely I think he is to start. But I was hoping to get some points on my WC team tbh. I wasn't trying to be provocative be benching Jimenez. It was more of gut-feel way to organise the team while I continue tweaking.

That said, Greenwood, could still come on for 10-45 mins and wreak havoc.

Not too unhappy about the nightmare tbh. But I have considered many time dropping Jimi to Nketiah. There's just not enough midfield slots to spend the money on. I don't want to go for Son or Salah simply because they're more expensive. I like these picks :/ So Jimi seems like excellent cover this week and perhaps even other weeks too. I can always drop him or someone else with 2FTs in GW 35

    McCarthy-Saka-Williams-Guendo

Should be set for the next two after that if not the duration. Thoughts?

      GW36 Salah vs Arsenal

They have 4 days after their previous game against Burnley, which is a luxury gap in these times. They play an Arsenal defence, need anything more be said? Arsenal will have two eyes on the FA Cup semifinal just 3 days later whereas Liverpool will have a break of around a week before their next match against Chelsea, so limited worries regarding needing to rest players.

Pulisic looks way better than Sarr at the moment and Chelsea making more chances.
It’s a shame to lose Sarr before those fixtures but Watford don’t look good at the moment.

Best 3 united players to own?
Currently got Bruno and Rashford but tempted to do Rashford and Guendouzi to Greenwood and Martial. Would give me a midfield of Mane, KDB, Son, Bruno, Martial with forwards Jimenez, DCL and Greenwood.

Yeah i'm considering Guendouzi and DCL to Foden and Greenwood. DCL would be on the bench until the last 3 games anyway probably. Can't help but think Martial is the better pick over Rashford.

Can’t decide whether to raise 0.6m (for Sarr > Pulisic) by downgrading Aurier or Rashford. It would mean

    A) Aurier + Sarr >> Taylor + Pulisic
    B) Guendouzi + Sarr + Rashford >> Martial + Pulisic + Connolly (-4) in a 352

    Rest of team
    Ddg
Taa Doherty Aurier — Holgate Kiko
Kdb salah Bruno Sarr — Guendouzi
    Dcl Jimmy Rashford

Just watch out for rotation with Simpson and Nketiah on your bench. Worth downgrading one of your midfielders, or Alonso to Aurier, to improve these two?

Played WC GW32 to BB in GW33

I have Foden and Nketiah to allow 'big hitters', as team value is low but now regretting this...Captain Hindsight.

If Foden plays little part in tonight's game then I will hold for the Southampton game. If he plays most of tonight's match then 'I can see trouble ahead' 🙁

Martial > ASM & Nketiah or
    Martial > Pulisic/Willian & Nketiah > Greenwood for -4 too knee jerky?

    Your advice most appreciated

No. But he looked very poor last game. Need to get my plan ready if he looks as bad again tonight

I think its partially a reaction to Sons position last week (way out on left wing and not v involved in the game) and the fact that he actually got 6 (or was it 9) points was a bit of a miracle. So the underlying fear is that people dont have 'confidence' in him going forward...

Not this. You brought him in as PL returned and there's only been 2 games. And look at the fixtures that spurs have. Now you want to take him out for a hit nonetheless even before he plays? Steady those knees

Running out of games and time my friend. I always got him as I planned on captaining him at Bournemouth but he seems to wide so far. Will monitor closely tonight of course and reassess but he is the one who looks the worst value in my team since the break

Playing the FH to counter all the triple captains this week in my ML, think GW38 will be a lottery anyways and the FH will not offer as much

I tend to agree that using FH on GW38 doesnt make an awful lot of sense. At least if played earlier, you can plan for a 'recovery' in the remaining weeks if it doesnt go your way.

It's more to target the fixtures and those playing for something. For example, the likes of Antonio and Grealish and then get Spurs, United, Wolves, Chelsea, Leicester depending on rotation and motivation.
