Scoutcast Episode 336 – How to get ahead

With just six Gameweeks remaining, time is running out for a surge up the rankings or a toppling of mini-league rivals.

But it’s not too late to get ahead, as our Scoutcast trio, of Joe, Let’s Talk FPL’s Andy and FPL Family’s Lee, find out.

In their search for a respectable end to the season, they have got their eye on differentials. They reveal the low-owned players they are keen to bring in as well as the strategic ways Fantasy Premier League managers can steal a march.

Tapping into Manchester United’s plethora of options is certainly a viable tactic and the Red Devils are among teams examined in the search for mini-league glory.

Meanwhile, getting the right third striker could be key to success. However, should we be basing this criterion of forward on price alone?

Joe does not let the episode go by without mentioning his decision to retain and captain Arsenal’s double-digit FPL hero Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.0m). Nor does Lee want his fellow hosts to forget that his team, Liverpool, are the newly crowned Premier League champions.

One community member’s rollercoaster of a Gameweek over his captaincy and bench decisions also gets an airing.

Elsewhere, there are clean sheets to consider and our trio reveal their differing plans for attempting a rank climb in Gameweek 33+. Will Joe stick to his dullard plan? Or change his mind for more exciting options at the 11th hour?

The move i had penciled in for this week was Auba + Egan for Rashford + Alonso for free (2FT)
But now i'm not so sure due to Auba's haul and Alonso being at fault for West Ham's winner.
Should i just stick with the plan?
    Pope Button
    TAA, AWB, Saiss, Egan, Lascelles
    Salah, KDB, Bruno, Pulisic, Traore,
    Auba, Jimmy, Long

2ft and 0.7 in the bank

Yeh, Blades have no goals in them. They're lacking O'Connell again so I can see a 1-0 to the Spuds here.

A gamble, Traore could burn you, but S-M has more minutes in him. Personally I'd keep Traore.

Go with ASM for minutes. Traore looks like he’ll be rotated and Wolves fixtures looks better for CS potential. I wouldn’t expect high scoring games for them till the end of season

    Already playing Pope, start

    A) Taylor, home to Sheff Utd.

There is no guarantee Lamptey plays 60 even if he starts as Potter needs to shift tactics and substitute 3+ players halfway through the match to prove he is a genius.

      So A.

Liverpool triple up is not wise, they will rotate and be benched often now that the title is secure. I would use those funds elsewhere.

Lol, this came straight from Klopp's mouth. They don't care about records. They care about being healthy for next seasons repeat run and further champions league performance....

Could you imagine how much animosity Klopp would get if Salah, VVD, Mane, Firmino, or someone got hurt in a meaningless game and missed the first 6 months of next season?

          He's not an idiot.

No Liverpool assets seemed like a fine play earlier. But the anxiety is rising.

    Current team

    Lloris, 3.9
AWB, Doherty, Saiss, Lascelles, J Robinson
    KDB, Son, Pepe, Fernandes, Guendozi
    Rashford, Jiminez, DCL

    2FT, 3.1m itb

    Current thoughts:
    Pepe out is definitely happening
A - Pepe to Pulisic, DCL to Jesus
B - Pepe to Pulisic, J Robinson to TAA
C - Pepe to Pulisic, Son to Salah

            1) Jesus/Mahrez vs
            2) Salah/DCL

            A) Aurier + Martial (-4) vs
            B) Taylor/Holgate rotation + Rashford

            Leaning towards 1A

SHU only 7 players on bench even when you can have 9..

Same as Burnley on Monday. The new subs rule does no favours to the financially smaller sides.

I don't understand why they don't put a couple of under-23 players on the bench to give them a nice confidence boost unless it's just about sending a message to the higher ups about needing more players every time like Jose would do.

Wishlist for the evening so I don't need to spend too much time re-jigging my WC team, while my current team also does well and justifies poor decisions I've made.

            1. Kane plays well, gets chances.
            2. Aurier clean sheet and attacking return
            3. Son hattrick, but then declares immediate retirement from football.
            4. Mane outscores Salah
            4. Mahrez & KDB play well with little or no returns, then subbed before 90.
            4. Foden plays 90 mins and has a poor game, looks tired. Also retires.

And 4. Sheffield continue to concede a lot of header goal attempts

OK here's a fun bit of analysis which I think heartily supports Lateriser's strategy for targetting the hauls each gameweek.

The question I asked myself is this: taking a ludicrously (and unnecessarily, see below) aggressive approach, for the sake of argument, taking a -4 every week for the best captain, could I have actually improved my captain score for the season?

I **really quickly** went through the best captains for each week based on the fixtures and what I remember about them, not factoring injury worries and only vaguely remembering which teams were the whipping boys at the time (Watford in the autumn for example). There was little or no captain hindsight - I did my best to forget the result if I remembered it (not that hard it turns out) You may easily disagree with my selections below, but this is my list of who I probably would have captained each week and their scores. Factoring forgotten injury news etc I think the list as chosen at the time could easily have done better. I defaulted to Salah when he was fit, Mane when Salah was injured, likewise KdB as a 'sub' for Aguero. And this list includes bad gameweek selections - the best of a bad bunch, for example Abraham against Palace, rather than the standouts like Aguero vs Norwich.

So..The 'best' captains to date have scored a total of 556 points. I am ranked about 22k and so have had a decent season so far. My captain picks add up to 430 so far, including Auba last night. So, and I think this is remarkable: even if I had taken a -4 EVERY WEEK since after GW1 to ensure I had the best captain, I would have scored two MORE points than this lot combined. 556-(31x4) = 432 As it happens, I would often already have the best player for that week, meaning that hits would not have been needed. I would perhaps have only needed to take a hit half of the time to ensure that my captain was the best. Taking these hypothetical hits allows me to make one hypothetical transfer per week to ensure that the rest of the team could be kept in good shape, and they do not factor in two wildcards and a free hit, which might have saved me 12 points immediately.

Unless I have overlooked something here, this has radically changed the way I think about the game. If chasing the best player for the best fixture can be this successful even when diluting the data with the gameweeks with poor fixtures, then taking hits for the best possible captain when there IS a standout option seems like a no-brainer.

Come on, pick apart my methodology. What do you think? Is this a compelling case for playing the game more aggressively and no longer hiding behind the sofa when the highly-captained player you don't own takes to the pitch?

            Apologies for the formatting (maybe):

            GW1 Salah 24
            GW2 Salah 6

First thought it how much damage does it to do to the rest of your team switching them. Plus what about the weeks where they aren't the best captain but still haul?

yeah second point seems pretty valid unless I'm missing something - probably not related but some of my VC hauls have been ridiculous this season

First time poster long time admirer. Advice welcome!

            Current Team:

            Foster - Button
            TAA-Boly-Las-Egan-Soy
            KDB-Salah-Bruno- Grealish-Pulisic
            Ings-DCl-Jimenez

Tempted to do: DCL - Grealish - Foster to Greenwood-Pope-Martial for -8 but is it worth it? Still have WC and BB. If I was to use my WC for a -8 I feel I wouldn't be getting the full benefit.

            Any other suggestions?

I have WC and TC and running out of weeks to use WC tbh. Was gonna use it this week and realized I only wanted 2-3 changes (-4). Basically it's not normal circumstances and a WC is justified to avoid a -8 hit.

I also think if Greenwood starts then him/martial could score you big.

Use it - throw in some good BB options for 2 weeks time too

Would appreciate any input on my transfers this week. I have 2FT & 3.3M ITB.

            My current thoughts are:
            H Barnes --> Pulisic
            Grealish --> Antonio
            Egan --> AWB
            -4 points & 0.5M ITB.

Do you think it's worth taking the -4 hit to make the move? I feel like as though I'm missing out on other great midfield options like Foden, Willian, Mahrez (can't afford by 0.1M).

            Team would be:
            Pope (McCarthy)
            TAA AWB Lascelles (Saiss, Basham)
KDB Salah (c) Bruno Pulisic Antonio
            Jiminez Rashford (Nketiah)

            And finally...worth TC for Salah?

Would love any input, being very indecisive! Currently top 5,000 in the world & top of my mini leagues.
