Palace defence out of form ahead of Gameweek 36+ meeting with United

Yet another Fantasy Premier League deadline is only a day away so, with time against us, we will rattle through the main discussion points from two more Gameweek 35+ fixtures in an abridged Scout Notes below.

Watford v Newcastle United and Aston Villa v Crystal Palace are our featured games in this article.

Porous Palace

An away clash at Crystal Palace would ordinarily be a tricky test on paper.

From Gameweeks 1+ to 30+, Palace had the joint-sixth-best defensive record in terms of goals conceded and only three sides had kept more clean sheets.

Since then, however, the Eagles have lost five on the spin and conceded more goals than any other team.

Without arguably their best centre-half in the injured Gary Cahill (£4.4m) and drifting towards a lower-mid-table finish, this seems to be a good time to take on Roy Hodgson’s troops – and it’s Manchester United who face Palace next in Gameweek 36+.

Aston Villa had only scored twice in eight games before Sunday’s clash in the Midlands but they doubled that tally in one fell swoop against the Eagles.

A double for Trezeguet (£5.2m) handed Dean Smith’s side their first victory since January.

Patrick van Aanholt (£5.6m) blanked as a result of a fifth successive clean sheet loss but, as is his wont, he so very nearly popped at the other end with a late consolation, registering Palace’s only big chance of the match with a shot that Pepe Reina (£4.2m) saved.

Gayle Force

Among sub-£5.5m forwards, Dwight Gayle (£5.0m) is second only to Mason Greenwood (£4.9m) for FPL ‘form’ over the last month.

Gayle scored the opener in Newcastle United’s 2-1 defeat at Watford and has attacking returns in four of his last five starts, with his only blank coming in the 5-0 defeat at Manchester City.

The budget striker tapped in Federico Fernandez‘s (£4.6m) flick-on to give Newcastle the lead, later being denied by Ben Foster (£4.9m) and setting up Allan Saint-Maximin (£5.4m) for the Magpies’ only other ‘big chance’ of the match.

Steve Bruce’s recent change to a 4-2-3-1 has certainly led to a bit more attacking thrust from the Magpies, although no clean sheets in five matches (their previous two shut-outs were recorded against ten men) does suggest that it has come at the expense of some defensive stability.

Dawson’s Leap

Deeney on the Spot

Troy Deeney (£6.2m) emerged from Watford’s win over Newcastle with a 13-point haul, which is more than he had managed in his previous six appearances combined.

The Hornets’ striker was indebted to two penalties to end his goal drought and in truth, his threat from open play remains limited – his four shots on Saturday (two of which were from the spot) more than doubled his total for the previous five Gameweeks.

His only other clear-cut opportunity was presented to him by an awful Fernandez clearance and the mid-price striker shot straight at Martin Dubravka (£5.1m) with the goal at his mercy.

Deeney limped off towards the end but Nigel Pearson said after full-time:

Troy has what I would call a ‘grumbly knee’ that he has to manage on a daily and weekly basis. This is nothing new, it’s something which he’s come to terms with and has to manage, so you may see him with a bandage today, but it’s nothing new.

Injuries and Bans

Christian Benteke (£5.7m) will miss the remainder of the season after being sent off for violent conduct after the final whistle at Villa Park.

Jordan Ayew (£5.1m) will now presumably revert to being a central striker for the last three Gameweeks, after a spell on the right flank.

Villa lost two of their defence to injuries on Sunday, with Kortney Hause (£4.4m) pulling out in the warm-up and Neil Taylor (£4.2m) being substituted after 36 minutes.

Ahmed Elmohamady (£4.1m) was given the nod at right-back, with Matt Targett (£4.3m) making a timely return from injury to replace Taylor on the opposite flank.

Line-ups

Watford XI (4-2-3-1): Foster; Femenia, Kabasele, Dawson, Masina; Capoue, Hughes; Sarr, Doucoure, Welbeck (Gray 90′); Deeney (Cleverley 85′).

Newcastle United XI (4-2-3-1): Dubravka; Manquillo, Lascelles (Lazaro 87′), Fernandez, Rose (Krafth 79′); Schar, Shelvey; Saint-Maximin, Almiron, Ritchie (Joelinton 72′); Gayle (Bentaleb 79′).

Aston Villa XI (4-3-3): Reina; El Mohamady, Konso Ngoyo, Mings, Taylor (Targett 36′); McGinn, Luiz, Hourihane (Nakamba 80′); Trezeguet (El Ghazi 88′), Samatta (Davis 80′) Grealish.

Crystal Palace XI (4-3-3): Guaita; Ward, Dann, Sakho, van Aanholt; Zaha, Kouyate (Riedewald 66′), Milivojevic (Meyer 75′), McArthur (McCarthy 46), Ayew (Townsend 66′); Benteke.

    How's this FH?

    Pope
    TAA, Azpilicueta, AWB
Salah, Sterling, D Silva, Pulisic, Fernandes
    Jesus, Giroud

If we get confirmation Alonso starts I could move TAA to him and get Ings instead of Giroud.

I bought Lamptey in on a wildcard this week for BB37, and he was benched.

Is he out of the side now or do you think he was just being rested?

    Why are people selling Salah?

    1. He plays Arsenal & Chelsea defence and then Newcastle.

    2. He is chasing the Golden Boot which is very evident by now.

    3. He is very selfish and hungry for goals.

    4. He is nailed on to start all the remaining games. Good amount of rest for Liverpool players as there is nothing else to play for.

    5. Liverpool are aiming for the highest points record.

    6. He is Mo Salah.

      - allure of Man City assets
      - he blanked last GW (which is the time horizon for an average FPL player)
      - Liverpool as a team aren't looking as exciting attacking wise as Man Utd + Man City
      - some concerned about a rest

        • 6 Years

Well those are all really good points! Did he look like blanking in the last game? He was so unlucky! He could have couple of assists and goals! Also he is very less likely to be rested ad compared to Man City players.

No, he actually looked really hungry but a lot of people just look at the actual scores rather than watching the game or the underlying stats - transfers have a much higher correlation with t-1 GW points rather than t0 GW points

The only game where Liverpool consistently looked their best was the one vs. Palace. I wouldn't buy Salah now, though I'm probably keeping Mane given that Arsenal are both defensively challenged and with one eye on the FA Cup.

(That's actually a bit harsh on Arsenal - sure, they made awful mistakes vs. Spurs but they did keep a series of clean sheets with Martinez in goal. Arteta has got them much better organised, so I suppose the more correct description would be that they're prone to mistakes.)

@ GREEK FREAK, did you see the match yesterday? Kane was running past them. I have never seen that before. Liverpool will score a few.

Don't have stats, but number of chances conceded must be less for Arsenal now.
Laps in concentration of people is costing them

Your only losing 1 transfer which is 4 pts. You’ll make far more back if you FH. I used mine GW33 with 2FT and made over 40pts on my normal team.

Hows this FH draft currently team looking?

    Fabianski
    Azpi, Robertson, AWB
Sterling, KDB, Fernandes, Pulisic (c), Willian
    Jesus, Ings

    Bench: Tanganga, Connolly, Simpson

Bench is insanely weak (although expect Tanganga to start RB now with the sad news about Aurier) and am worried about starts for KDB & Sterling.... would it be more sensible to move both out for likes of Foden/D.Silva/Antonio? Thanks

    The Review: GW 35+

Hi everyone, welcome to The Review. Having a tough time deciding what transfers to make? Here I cast my eyes on FPL events, past and future, heading into GW36+:

(Data taken from FFScout with permission)

    1) I start with the unlucky Mohamed Salah this week. Salah recorded as many big chances as Sterling (two each) and in fact, fared better for shots in the box (four vs three) and minutes per expected goal involvement (66 vs 74). Yet, if you were a Salah captainer and a Sterling non owner, the swing could have been as brutal as 40 points. The only thing standing between Salah and a Sterling-esque haul was Nick Pope, and a herculean-like performance from the Wall of Burnley ensured that it wasn’t to be Salah’s day. Sometimes, you’ve just got to accept the way the cookie crumbles as a FPL manager because the game is based on such fine margins. Easier said than done though.

    2) Who is my captain this week? I will have a hard time looking past Raheem Sterling, yet again. Sterling stands joint with Antonio for most goals scored post the restart, and has an exceptional record against Bournemouth having scored nine times and earned two assists in his eight appearances against the Cherries. I think this has gone under the radar a bit, but I was surprised to see Sterling say that he was going to try for the Golden Boot. He mentioned he needed at least a hat-trick to stand a chance. He got it. I think this is one of the reasons I expect Sterling to start this week too, like Salah last GW. A quick glance through the City forums suggest that most of the fans expect De Bruyne to be rested, and if that is true, I think there’s an outside chance of Sterling being on penalties too given his motivation to win the Golden Boot.

    3) Two City players who I think are more or less certain to play this week are Phil Foden and David Silva, given that both have had their rest. Foden has started the last three home games, and I can see that trend continuing here again. I expect him to start on the left in the front three, a position in which he started against Newcastle and according to the heat/position maps, he was the most advanced City player on the field. He was one of the most underperforming players that GW, having registered the most shots inside the box, big chances and penalty area touches of all City players so was he was extremely unlucky not to come out of that game with an attacking return. Expect his fortunes to swing. He would be my differential captain if you’re looking for one. I always target the City front three and Kevin De Bruyne in FPL so David Silva is a player I often overlook, but in the four games he has started post restart, he has recorded two big chances himself and created four big chances for his teammates so his numbers look decent too.

    4) No player has accumulated as many shots in the box as Gabriel Jesus has over the past three GW’s. During this period, Jesus is ranked second for big chances as well and now looks far more involved as opposed to his peripheral role earlier. A nailed City striker under Pep will always be gold in FPL – only Agüero has a better minutes per goal involvement ratio in the league all season. Most City fans expect him to start this week, and if he does expect him to have some fun against an Aké less Bournemouth.

    5) Palace’s defensive numbers seem to have fallen off a cliff since the league resumption. I think their statistics have nosedived because there is a lack of motivation among the players with nothing other than pride left to play for. This GW, they conceded four big chances to a Villa side who have had one of the worst xG’s from open play since the restart. No team has conceded more big chances or have had a worse xGc than Palace since the restart – if you are a Martial, Fernandes, Rashford or Greenwood owner expect the points to flow when United visit Selhurst next GW.

    6) No team has conceded more shots in the box and big chances over the past two GW’s as Brighton. Granted they have played Liverpool and Man City over this spell, but their numbers over this spell have been borderline appalling. Danny Ings, who in the previous game against Everton recorded the highest number of touches in the opposition’s penalty area that an outfield player has managed all season, will be licking his lips. The fact that he has the highest goal involvement % of all players in the league to have played 1000+ minutes this season indicates that he’s likely to be involved in the goals when the Saints face Brighton and Bournemouth.

    7) Jamie Vardy is back in business in the attacking charts yet again. The Leicester forward is second only to Jesus for shots in the box and big chances over the past three GW’s. During this spell, Vardy has recorded 4 shots in the box per game (vs 1.20 GW 22 onwards) and ∼1.67 big chances per game (vs 0.20 GW 22 onwards). He will now be up against Sheffield United, a team Vardy would dearly love to score against given that he’s a supporter of bitter rivals, Sheffield Wednesday. Getting rid of him might be risky business for FPL managers.

    8) Who is the best Chelsea option against Norwich? The problem I face when analyzing Chelsea assets is that there is no “obvious” pick. It happened with Mason Mount earlier in the season, and even now with the likes of Pulisic/Willian/Giroud/Abraham the points are often spread. I wrote last week that despite the fact that Pulisic had better numbers over the season, Willian has now been out-statting him of late. Pulisic and Giroud both are averaging a big chance every two appearances after the restart, but Tammy Abraham despite his poor run of form has been doing well numbers wise recording the highest amount of big chances of all Chelsea players post restart. I think that whichever forward starts will be a good pick, but the problem with Chelsea strikers is that no matter the situation, they often get replaced around the hour mark which hurts their ability to haul big.

    9) Eight shots in the box and five big chances for Michail Antonio vs Norwich now takes him top for big chances post restart. An expected minutes per goal involvement of just ∼28 minutes is the best an outfield player has recorded without penalties this season. This speaks volumes of where Norwich stand – it’s almost as if they want to fast forward to next season already. Scary part is Antonio could have had even more had he been more clinical.

    10) Wolves’ defence is the gift that keeps on giving. An xGc of ∼0.30 against Everton was in line with their defensive stats – they have only conceded six big chances over the past ten GW’s now, and the fewest of all teams since the restart. There’s every chance of Wolves getting even more clean sheets in the run-in, particularly in the next two GW’s where they face goal shy Burnley and Palace. Wolves looked a different team with the introduction of Daniel Podence in attack which consequently led to Raúl Jiménez finally ending his barren spell. The Mexican has now registered bonus points in 13 out of the 15 games in which he has scored this season. That is incredible consistency which makes him standout relatively his counterparts.

    11) A team that are practically on the beach with little to play for are Everton. With a depleted defence and midfield at their disposal, Everton’s numbers have plummeted. Over the past two games, Everton have conceded 10.50 shots in the box per game (vs 5.25 post restart) and 3.50 big chances per game (vs 0.50 post restart). Their creativity since the restart has been shocking to see too – only Norwich have created fewer big chances post restart. That doesn’t bode well for Calvert Lewin’s owners given that the Toffees will now be up against an improved Villa defence fighting for their lives to stay in the division.

    12) Watford’s Ismaïla Sarr has registered just one shot over the past five GW’s. His purple patch is well and truly over and so is his status as Watford’s chief goal threat. Watford’s goal threat has been next to negligible for the past few GW’s, but in this GW alone they created more big chances than they had in the previous 4 GW’s combined. Troy Deeney was the main beneficiary with three big chances, the highest a player managed this GW after Antonio, although one could argue he was fortunate because two of them were penalties.

Just a brief comment to say that reading your last GW's review convinced me to captain Sterling instead of Mane - it would've been a somewhat depressing GW had I stuck to my original plan!

And one word on Sarr - he looked good in the second half vs. Newcastle. Maybe not in Fantasy terms, but in real football terms. He kept running, was a tireless worker, and pressed all the time.

      good read.

ref sterling on penalties, that's more a risk to points than opportunity.

I am now. I was considering it anyway, but after reading this, not only am I bringing in Sterling, I might even triple captain him..... and bringing in Foden for a hit! Madness? Yeah, probably, but as a Cherries fan, I know that we have only half a defence without Ake. Nothing ventured....

I brought in Sterling last week as part of a -8 that involved Salah and KDB out. It can work! Or it can end in tears...

Pep said he would "rest 4-6 players" against Bournemouth.

Looking at his past starting line ups, his back 4 would regularly rotate each game (except the 3 matches against Chelsea, Newcastle in the FA Cup, Liverpool)

So, assuming 4 of the rotated players are his back 4, who are the other 2?

Mahrez seems likely to make way for Foden.
      Dilva for DeBryuyne?

Those are already 6 players. So my q is:

Does Pep always tells the truth? Anyone with exps can share?

Because he should be able to rest 2 more players, with Dinho and Gundo waiting in line

    A) Martial, TAA, Tarkowski
    B) Martial, TAA, Egan (saving 1 FT)
    C) Pulisic, TAA, Egan
    D) Martial, Azpi, Egan

Really torn - advice appreciated! No other Chelsea players (have Salah, TAA, Martial, Fernandes, Greenwood).

    Cheers

Pulisic is the better player, more explosive. Willian might not have the penalties if Jorginho is on the pitch as he has been the 1st choice pen taker so far.

Depends whom else you have. I would not consider him, after re-start he was just not convincing at all. That's true for Everton as a whole
