The Promoted

What to expect from Leeds United manager Marcelo Bielsa in FPL

FPL managers are set for entertainment when Marcelo Bielsa finally arrives in the top-flight of English football.

The Leeds United manager joins the Premier League heralded as an unprecedented individual, his personality likely to impact your FPL team at some point in the 2020/21 season.

With this piece, we are launching our series of articles on The Promoted, so that the Fantasy community is well-prepared for the latest sides to join FPL.

We are starting with El Loco, as the Leeds boss is affectionately known and, later in the week we will assess the Championship winners’ defensive and attacking underlying statistics to pick out the early contenders for inclusion in our squads.

To help us with our research, we have brought in the expertise of Beren Cross, a journalist for LeedsLive who has covered United extensively during Bielsa’s time at the club.

What is Bielsa’s background?

Bielsa is considered to be one of the most enigmatic characters in world football after three decades of management under his belt, including spells with Argentina and Chile’s national teams, Athletic Bilbao, Marseille, Lazio and Lille.

The Leeds United job is his first in England but the Argentinian is well-known on the world stage, reportedly a huge influence on some of the biggest coaches on the Premier League scene, including one Pep Guardiola.

“My admiration for Marcelo Bielsa is huge. For me, he’s the best coach in the world.” – Pep Guardiola

“He’s one of the best managers in the world. And he’s like my father.” – Mauricio Pochettino

During his time as a football manager, Bielsa has earned a reputation for exceptional levels of attention to detail. Going into every game, he will have mapped out potential solutions to any situation that could ensue on the field.

“If players weren’t human, I’d never lose.” – Marcelo Bielsa

“Playing in a Bielsa side is a bit like being in the military. It’s tactics, tactics, tactics and fitness.” – Mateusz Klich

Nothing encapsulates Bielsa’s attention to detail, or demeanour better than the already notorious incident of Spygate.

Always known as a man dedicated to in-depth analysis of his opponents’ tactics, it was discovered in January 2019, that the Leeds manager had sent coaches to spy on Derby Country’s training sessions ahead of a key Championship clash.

However, instead of denying the allegations, Bielsa admitted spying on Derby, as well as every other opponent Leeds had faced that season.

What followed was an hour-long press conference, which Beren Cross attended, in which Bielsa gave a PowerPoint presentation on how he profiles upcoming opposition. Such is the meticulousness of his research and analysis, the conclusion of this unprecedented press briefing was that Bielsa did not need to spy on other clubs to know how to beat them.

Leeds were then fined £200,000 for their involvement in the scandal but, summing up Bielsa’s character perfectly, he insisted on paying the fee out of his own pocket.

Having Bielsa in the Premier League is sure to add a new level of drama for the neutral fans, but how will it impact FPL? Let’s have a closer look…

What style of football does Bielsa use?

To get an accurate fix on the way Leeds are likely to set-up their stall in the Premier League, we asked Beren Cross what style of football Bielsa likes to use.

It certainly appears that his side will make matches entertaining for fans next season, which could result in goals at both ends of the pitch.

“The nearest tactical style your readers will be able to compare it to is Pep Guardiola’s City set-up. United press high, they mark man-to-man across the pitch, a feature many opposition managers pointed out as being unique in the Championship last season. The Whites are renowned for being the fittest team in the league. Described as machines by some in the way they relentlessly press and harry. Many winners came late in matches while opposition tired and they kept going until the bitter end.” – Beren Cross

Those already trying to get an accurate fix on Leeds’ line-ups for 2019/20, should start with their regularly used formations, especially as they are known for a somewhat changeable shape.

“It’s very fluid, but the simplest description would be a 4-1-4-1 with the wingers and full-backs pushing up to create a 3-3-1-3 at times. It is something he sticks to a lot, but the formation is generally determined by how many strikers the opposition employ. If it’s one striker they go 4-1-4-1 and if it’s two strikers, they go 3-3-1-3.” – Beren Cross

As for whether the personnel within these systems can be relied upon for starts, it seems as though Leeds could come into the Premier League to match the likes of Burnley or Wolves for high number of reliable starters.

As you have already seen, Bielsa’s style of management is unique so the fact that his players are attuned to this will go a long way to helping them start games regularly in the top-flight.

“Leeds are a very settled side. Bielsa only tends to change the team for suspensions and injuries, even during poor runs of form. They are so fit, fatigue is rarely an issue. The aforementioned Bamford would go 10 matches without a goal in the Championship and not be dropped, much to many fans’ dismay. However, Bielsa is loyal and his players run through brick walls for him.” – Beren Cross

How does Bielsa handle the press?

Press conferences form a big part of how Fantasy managers pick their team, so it is always important to assess what role Bielsa will play in that.

Are Leeds going to be a team we can rely on for accurate injury information, or will Bielsa replace Eddie Howe as the Premier League’s non-committal team news pedaller?

“Bielsa is cordial with the press, but he is a private man. He does not grant any one-to-one interviews. He treats every journalist the same and gives them all a chance to ask their questions in press conferences. He is very forthcoming with injury news. There was a period, in his first season, Bielsa would name the starting XI in press conferences, much to supporters’ frustrations. He has grown out of that now, but is very honest about injuries and who is likely to replace outgoing personnel.” – Beren Cross

Keep an eye out for our articles on Leeds’ defence and attack later this week and, for more detail on United for the 2020/21 season, make sure to follow Leeds United Live on Twitter.

Thoughts of “I’m the best player on the team by a mile” got to his head. He was amazing for us. The best player we have had in the Emirates era. Should have stayed and been a legend for us instead of doing nothing of note for Man United (huge rivals) or Inter.

          What about Auba?

Wrote it a few days ago, but those classifications seems just as subjective as VAR-refs on everything other than off- /onside judgements, where some crazy tech guy is doing THEIR job for THEM.

Why can't they just visit the goddangit 20 official teamwebsites and copy-paste their player positions?
That is the objective way to classify the players, and afterwards they can play around with the points system and player pricing imo.

'Oh no now I can't build my phenomonal OOP midfield of doom (Sterling, Salah etc.).
KDB and Bruno would be the standout midfield picks, but they are anyway tbh. Suddenly it is a matter of going with either Salah/Sterling + budget up front or the combined likes of let's say Ings + Richarlison/Antonio

        Fair pricing

I can’t see how 2 12mil players is using the budget well

Say you keep the defence and 12mil pairing the same, that’s 17.5 mil to scrape off 3mids and 2 forwards (3.5 mil of each)

Indeed but city pool may not rotate well

The real problem is Utd assets will be hiked and some Chelsea additions / existing players be at similar prices. Getting a mix of those players who will score well is important - tough budget choices this year

The more I look at all the midfield reclassifications being touted, 442 might be the way to go. 5 in midfield could really stretch your budget too much if you are planning on going without a 4.5 Gwendozi in midfield. Starting with a defensive midfielder as your 5th guarantees you a 1 or 2 pointer most of the time. Not worth it IMO.

Nah. Defense is always touted early in a season and then falls off. And the reason is that you need money up the field in order to jump on the players performing. For flexibility purposes. If you spread your funds too much in defense you can't react fast enough further up the field if say Martial explodes and you need the funds somehow.

I hope FPL towers are influenced by this:

      1) Make Salah, Sterling and Antonio forwards
      2) Make Rashford and Lundstram midfielders
      3) Be defensive in pricing (i.e. put the big hitters and the players from Man City, Man Utd, Liverpool and Chelsea at higher prices than usual) to open up the number of viable picks
      4) Move the deadline back to two hours before the first kick-off

          1) Nothing about their SITB stats to suggest they are forwards
          2) Their SITB stats suggest they are forwards
          3) OK
          4) To level the playing field for those in different time zones. I have benefited from early team news, but I can see it is fairer for all that play the game if the deadline is moved back.

Moving Rash to midfield while keeping Greenwood as a striker seems off to me. They are playing the same position in opposite site of the pitch.

They aren't playing exactly the same position though. Greenwood plays a more inside role than Rashford.

This is the thing with FPL vs real life. In real life you can be a wide winger, an inside winger, a playmaking forward, a striker, a wide midfielder, a central midfielder, a central attacking midfielder etc. There are literally hundreds of roles. But FPL does not distinguish between roles - it has three positions - DF, MF, FW and the bps work to favour certain actions within those roles.

I see Greenwood is a midfielder in the FanTeam 20/21 game and Rashford remained a striker. I am not sure how much sense that makes from an average position standpoint, but from a perception standpoint Rashford has always been seen as a striker whereas Greenwood is fairly new on the scene and has only ever played wide in the league AFAIK.

By that logic, I can't see Aubameyang becoming an FPL mid - he's always been perceived as a striker. Salah and Mané have always been seen as wingers.

    Pope, 4.0
    TAA, VVD, Robo, Doh, 5.0
    KDB, Bruno, Sancho, 5.0, 5.0
    Jimi or Ings, Wood, 4.5

I estimate this to cost in the 101-102m range with Jimenez, just over 100 with Ings.

That's good news. I made it 103.5, with at least Doherty to be switched with Saiss or cheaper.

Personally I'd happily go with 4 non-rotating big hitters at the back and a 4.0, which would open the door for a 4-4-2 in your team (with one of the 5.0s switched to a 4.5 in the midfield).

Do you think this is reasonable?

    Jadon Sancho - MID - 10m
    Bruno Fernandes - MID - 11m
    Marcus Rashford - MID - 9.5m
    Mason Greenwood - MID - 8m
    Anthony Martial - FWD - 9.5m

With Sancho looking likely to join I doubt they would be ramping up Greenwood like that. Nobody would pick him at 8m to sit on ones bench.

That’s not always what it’s about, it’s about ‘what if someone gets injured and the player plays as the injured one’s replacement’.

Hence Jesus’ price over the years.

I think an unproven Sancho would cost the same as a proven and reclassified Rashford.
      11.5 Bruno mid
      9.5 Rashford mid
      9.5 Sancho mid
      7.0 Greenwood mid
      9.5 Martial fwd

      Would be my guess.
I think the 8.35 average points pr. match by Fernandes is earning him a high price tag.

I think you can expect a 2.0 dif.
117 points in 14 matches from Bruno.
Compared to 74 Rashford (forward), 101 KDB, 107 Martial (midfield)

And I would buy Bruno at 11.5 from the get go and leave Sancho out if 11.5 and 9.5 were the case.
You might outscore me, but that guys is taking penalties, scoring and assisting.
I would be shitting my pants not owning Bruno from the start.

Yes pretty much. Although I'm hoping Bruno comes in around 10-10.5.

            Well.
Bruno will be close (within 1 mil) of KDB, Sterling, Salah, Mane, Auba.
AND he will be the most expensive ManU player.
That slightly OOP, nailed on, fit as hell, penalty and freekick taking, assist delivering machine will come in at a higher price, than an unproved, but very exiting looking Sancho. Bruno will be atleast 1 mil more than Sancho, and Sancho should be 2.0 or more mil cheaper for me to consider going Brunoless if you can only have 1 😉

Also, Martial looks safest best for double up IMO.

Rashford Sancho will have James & Greenwood. While Ole doesn't seem to like Ighalo in pl much. If stays fit i can bet Tony will play most minutes amongst 3 of them

At €120m (Bruno was €60m!) I see Sancho being at least €11.0 - with that record behind him, and a more attacking position as a wide forward... I’d be suprised if he was anything less than 11.0

Bruno has only played 14 games since they priced him at 8.5 - it’s too soon to get the price hike to he proper premium 11.0+ - that’ll come next season imo

14 games is 14 games, but watching Bruno in those 14 games though... Surely he were a bit tired in the end, but he looks just as exiting (if not more) to own compared to KDB. He outscored KDB by 16 points in 14 games.
Sancho won't be more than max. 10. Simply can't see it.
If Bruno were to be 10.0 every single manager would own him.

KDB and Bruno at 11.5 and Auba as an midfielder at 11.5 would put me off Sancho from the get go.

I’d say Sancho at 11.0 (we’re not going to get a marquee €120m Man Utd forward for less imo) & Bruno at 10.5 - remember when Pogba scored about 10G/10A in his purple patch under Ole - and he exited it with penalties & DFK’s & a better career minutes per G/A than Frank Lampard... he held his price at 8.5

I think 14 games is just too soon for anything more than +2.0 onto Bruno’s starting price, with the proper premium 11.0+ price tag coming next season

Looks right to me. Sancho possibly 10.5 - 11, Rashford maybe 10 as a mid.

Think FPL have to be very careful with pricing of United players. I think they’ll be very defensive with how they finished the season. Last seasons price won’t and shouldn’t enter into it imo.

The very fact that people are saying they hope Bruno will be 10-10.5 is exactly why he won’t be IMO.

I've found the below works but I find it boring so only stuck to it once in eleven seasons

4 defenders, keep captaincy safe, use 2FT plus hits to do mini wildcards every month.

I've always started with 5 strong defenders and usually works well for me.

Rotating goalkeepers has always been an overrated ball ache for me, just pick 1 and save your money.

If I need to gamble, I gamble on players, not captains.

Note: I'm nothing special as an FPL manager, 4 finishes in top 5k in 11 years. Oh and one 630k finish when I foolishly prioritised my marriage over fpl

Yeah i thought it was really odd.

Even in a very dynamic situation, we are quick to point out a defender taking one wrong step and allowing an attacker onto the stronger foot.

Whereas the goalkeepers making obvious errors in static situations goes relatively unnoticed.

It’s mostly just him being good I think - he’s regularly up at 35 or so with a single goal, which defenders find hard to keep up with with just a single CS.

40 for Suarez as well apparently - from 30G 25A. Think a lot of his returns were bunched into individual games though (think he had a 4G 1A and a 2G 3A!!!)

Shows what a baps monster Ings is though!

        1. Greek Freak
          • 8 Years

That ties in with Ings being consistent but not explosive - only three games with two attacking returns, all others were just solitary goals.

    4. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus
      • 14 Years
      3 years, 7 months ago

I think it’s 7 games where he got max baps from a single attacking return... and another 2 games where he got 2 baps from a single attacking return...

Ingsy basically gets 7 points for a goal 🙂

Maybe Greenwood will go on loan? Would be such a waste for him to sit this coming season on UTD's bench. He is good enough to start for one of the promoted sides, even SHU.

Brewster another young striker which needs 1st team action. Could do well at one of the bottom half clubs on loan.

Ah, that's interesting and a reminder that some mid-season additions have been, say, 4.3 rather than .0 or .5 as standard, which was quite odd

Maybe that has to do something with starting mids like Hayden this season being 4.3. If they haven't been starters, it would have been pointless to give them higher price tag?

Yeah, they should price defensive mids at 4.0.

The Shane Ferguson anomaly was another irony of Newcastle's 11-12 season. Written off in some quarters after the sales of Carroll, Nolan, Barton and Enrique (plus replacing Hughton with Pardew), they went on to very nearly qualify for the Champions League and provided immense value Krul 4.5, Danny Simpson 4.0 (4.5 for LEI 15-16 season), Ryan Taylor 4.5, Stephen Taylor 4.5, Demba Ba 6.5 and January signing Papiss Cisse whose price I can't remember, but went on an insane run on form he never again replicated. HBA had a little run at one point too.

Basically, Shane Ferguson was a waste of a NEW slot. His 4m price point was the biggest FPL anomaly potentially of all the game. Can only think the tale of Lundstram comes close

Staying well away from City defenders next season

I always stay away from City defenders. You just need to have a look at the defender points table.

I have only owned Laporte before but none this season.

Laporte at 6m with further additions such as Ake and I'll be all over him. Otherwise, I agree in that they can simply be discarded as options (incl 6m Ederson).

As I type this, I remember Ake's a LCB so may allow even Laporte even

The points table says Laporte scored 177 points the season before. He's as good as any other non-Liverpool full back premium defender when fit.

It'll be good. It will require more thought about the minor squad choices. Prime example - Greenwood will still be an attractive asset even if Sancho arrives as he'll likely come off the bench very frequently for 30 min cameos against tired legs. 5th benchie midfielders and strikers have more chance of getting pitch time and could make a difference if you and a rival both have a premium player who's rested for the GW. Some premium players will be habitually hauled off after 75 mins and might affect your decision to own them. I'm all for it.

Who will score more next season

    A. Martial

    B. Jesus

Both could score the same but if Jesus is nailed then he could go on a spree.

I think he should recover. He is much better player than Jesus and MCI is playing for the title. And he is a legend imo, so I cannot see him not starting home matches when fit. Pep roulette will affect also him, but not too often imho.

Aguero missing more games as the seasons go on due to injuries. He is a great asset for those weak defences but Pep roulette @ 12.0 when Jesus is getting prepped to lead the line, not for me.

Midfield is going to be the place for premiums this coming season.

Yes, but my point wasn't Aguero being good fpl asset, it was Jesus being a bad one when Aguero is fit.

Martial imo as he should get more minutes and is just the better player. Although playing in a lesser team but still.

Correct. Jesus isn't an option when Kun is fit. And even when he isn't, it's gona be tight.

Have a feeling Greenwood will oust Martial as uniteds main centre forward at some stage next season.

Even at the age of 18 he looks too good to be benched. Most naturally gifted striker ive seen since Harry Kane in pl.
