Che Adams (ยฃ6.0m) could offer value in Fantasy Premier League in 2020/21 if the way he finished last season is anything to go by.

The forward found the net four times in his final eight appearances of 2019/20, an encouraging statistic for anyone hoping he will nail down a starting place at Southampton.

If Adams can deliver on the promise shown at the back end of the previous campaign, there could be a knock-on effect of Fantasy darling Danny Ings (ยฃ8.5m), which is the focus of this article.

The Saints looked to be a lost cause when Leicester City beat them 9-0 back in October, but a remarkable turnaround in form led to 13 wins from their final 28 matches. In fact, following the restart, only Manchester City and Manchester United collected more points, which resulted in a comfortable mid-table finish.

Manager Ralph Hasenhรผttl has since been rewarded with a new contract, and there is evidence heโ€™s starting to build a really good team that could challenge for a European place next season.

So, in this latest article, Iโ€™m going to have a closer look at two of their forwards. A comparison piece between the two would have been unthinkable back in December, and is possibly still a bit unfair on Ings who had a formidable season.

But with Adams finishing strongly and coming in at a significantly cheaper price, Iโ€™m going to have a look at both players individually, before zoning in on the last four Gameweeks of the season to compare the data. Yes, itโ€™s a small sample size, but could it maybe give us an indication of what to expect going forward?

As this uses Opta data, only those with a valid Fantasy Football Scout subscription can access it in full.

Now I understand why Pep choosed so defensive tactic against Lyon. They are extremally well drilled and fast.

I think its the risk Bayern had to take to give themselves a better chance of biting into this 5 man defence.

Risky but it is working so far.

Aguero 16 goals in 1400 mins.
Martial 17 goals in 2600 mins.
Ings 22 goals in 2800 mins.
Vardy 23 goals in 3000 mins.

Aguero is the one to watch this season. 10.5m is a serious bargain

Yep, I'm considering starting the season with Kun up front and either doubling up with KDB or grabbing Auba instead. I think both Kane and Kun are being massively overlooked.

The difference with him is that Greenwood's minutes are likely to increase, whereas Kun's are likely to stay where they are... or get worse.

The lack of minutes for Kun were mainly because he was taken off early. Averaged around 60 mins per game last season.

            Debatable. This kid is special.

10 goals from just over 3 xG is absurd by anyone’s standards though. If he keeps that up over any sort of sample he’ll be the best finisher in the history of the game by an absolute mile.

Aguero in his prime was averaging far higher xGΔ than Greenwood did last season. It's very high, but it's not unheard of.

I wouldn't be surprised if it dropped next season, but he will always have a strong xGΔ imo.

I mean, in % terms he really wasn’t at all.

Even in absolute terms, highest overperformance for Aguero 2014/15 onwards (the limit of understat) was 24 goals from 20 or so xG. 4 goals in absolute terms, 20% overperformance in relative terms.

Greenwood is on roughly 200% overperformance in relative terms as it stands. Extrapolating that out over a higher sample (perhaps a season) sees him scoring 30 goals from 12 xG for example. Only gets more absurd the more you expand the timeframe.
                  https://understat.com/player/619 - Aguero’s stats
https://understat.com/player/2097 - another pretty decent finisher for further comparison.

                    I was using xGΔ/app

Perhaps that was the wrong thing to do. Not sure...

Hopefully over the long haul Greenwood in cold, hard goals, assists, Baps & points terms should continue to deliver - looking at his goal conversion in isolation (Like any stat) could give the wrong impression versus what your eye would see on the pitch

Whether he gets the results via a progression in his XG, Big Chances, SOT's.... or via maintaining his current XG deltas & goal conversion... or somewhere in between all of the above won't really matter from a points/output perspective

His first touch and quality/power off both feet in particular are very impressive and make him quite difficult for any defender to contain for a full 90 mins - his first touch at times also was just that good that it fashioned him chances out of nothing

Really hope he develops on the same trajectory because at 18 its fun to think how good he can get - but equally being that young he’ll also likely think nothing of going 4 or 5 games without returns

For 7.5 & classified as a mid there’s more than enough upside here I think though - as long as massive competition for his slot doesn’t arrive during the window

                • 9 Years

He won’t continue his current xG overperformance.

He might improve his other stats to maintain his output.

He is good value at 7.5.

Kind of renders the XG over performance metric redundant when it comes to FPL decision making with players like Greenwood - watching them on the pitch tells you all you need to know

If Grealish last season got 149 points and Greenwood got 103 points, I'm looking for something around the 130-150 points mark from him this year. I expect his minutes to increase especially if United don't get Sancho to achieve this having only played 1303 minutes last season.

      Players improve you know.

A player can look awful at one club, go away for a few seasons and improve massively in that time.

At that point in time he clearly wasn’t the player he is now otherwise, one thinks he wouldn’t have been shifted because he would have been producing for West Brom.

Aguero, if fit, is a good pick. But will he be back in time? He usually needs a few games to get up to speed too.

Of those listed, Fernandes, KDB, Martial, Pulisic look the best options in terms of price and nailedness.

sir, someone pointed out to me that rotating GKs is painful. So often you will have better points on the ben ch and it's a mindf+ck. I would save 0.5 and save yourself the stress of deciding each week.

      Really like it

Foden pick could be gold but I’m staying clear for now.

Jim? He’s top of value chart for a reason. Not an exciting pick but don’t see any reason why he’d regress this time. Arguably Wolves without Europe are stronger than ever. Yes Martial might improve this time but so I think might Jim and what he has over Martial is goal involvement.

Think the United triple up is overbold generally.

    Members need a little help.

I'm looking at the Expected - (Midfielders) stats and in that it shows KDB with 20 assists and Bruno with 7 assists for 2019/20 season all matches. But KDB ended with 23 and Bruno with 8.

Is there something wrong on the stats page or am I missing something?

    Thanks!

‘Fantasy’ assists are missing, there’s an option to include all assists.

Rebounds scored or Bruno diving to win Rashford pen would be a fantasy assist.

    5 Big Hitters

Due to the wealth of 4.5 defenders looking set to return points throughout the season I keep coming back to my initial draft fitting in 5 big hitters. Obviously I am not expecting these 4.5's to return the same amount of points as TAA, Robbo, VVD, Laporte, Doherty, Aurier and such, and I don't even expect them to be as nailed, but we'll get to that later. I'll try to justify the ultra cheap bench, captain headaches and my use of transfers.

    Team is:

    Ryan
    KWP - Ayling - Taylor - Vinagre
    Salah - Aubameyang - KDB - Fernandes - Ritchie
    Werner

    (Button, Mitchell, Davis, Vassilev)

GK's: Well not much in it tbh. Having this draft I don't like the idea of rotating keepers. It is just gonna be an 8.5 set and forget. Not even Nyland interests me, cause he runs the ball into his own net at times, which could see him benched the next match where Ryan could get injured. Far fetched.. I know.. but.

Defenders: I guess one or more is in all of your teams as well. Just seems like the most popular 4.5's at the moment. And 'at the moment' is the key here. My plan is to use all of my transfers on defenders, and leave the front eight untouched for as long as possible. Ofc I'll swap Ritchie if he is not nailed on, and my premiums if they just can't deliver through a longer period or gets injured. I'll be starting 4x 4.5 defenders every GW. Mitchell/Ferguson could start if they are nailed and have a good fixture ofc, which would result in a 4.5 defender first on bench. I don't mind start KWP in GW1 against an 'easy' opponent and buy him back after two reds. Obviously I will look at fixtures trying to get 4x 4.5's with 2 good opening fixtures and after that limit my transfers to 1 each week with a banked transfer should anything happen to one of my premiums. I don't mind Vinagre being back on the bench after let us say 4 weeks. I'll just swap him.
I'm not completely naive. I know my defenders will play teams such as Leicester, Wolves, Everton, Spurs and so on from time to time. I just don't want them to play my premiums in any GW ๐Ÿ˜‰

Midfielders: 5 penalty takers. What is not to like.

Attack: Another penalty taker. Let's go! Davis + Vassilev combo simply just to get the best possible chance of an 1-pointer should a rare benching/warm up injury hit my team.

Captain headaches: I'll just stick to the guy in form or the one with the most green fixture I guess. Don't really care much about having too many premiums.

Sacrifice: No TAA. Could hurt me big I know and it is not a very flexible squad. My bench is super weak, but as long as I get the one of Mitchell/Ferguson looking most nailed from the get go, and either Davis or Vassilev gets three minutes most GW's I can't see the use of the bench due to the many premium picks combined with the transfers on my 4.5 defenders.

Oh god convince me to do Salah/Auba + Davis + Ayling -> Greenwood + TAA + Mitrovic and swap into 3-5-2 ๐Ÿ™‚

Thanks. Always got WC right? ๐Ÿ˜‰
Used it after 2,3 and 6 GW's last 3 seasons anyway.

Instead of swapping the premiums looking for the best captain I just leave my premiums and swap the 4.5 defenders looking for the fixtures ๐Ÿ˜‰

What's the point of five heavy hitters when you can only ever captain one of them and the rest will struggle to match the premium defenders for points over the course of the season?

      1. Salarrivederci
        • 9 Years
        5 years, 5 months ago

        It's not just about that.
Well can't argue with previous points, and the premium defenders scored well previous seasons. Ofc this strategy needs some luck regarding making the right transfers to 4.5's hitting some cleanies, but having TAA and let's say Foden/Mahrez/Greenwood(if United signs a striker)/Ziyech(when Pulisic returns) and so on. Those will far more often get the odd benching compared to 'my' premiums, and that TAA + Mahrez (for arguments sake) would then most likely return fewer points than Salah + green fixture 4.5 fullback.

      2. Salarrivederci
        • 9 Years
        5 years, 5 months ago

        It is just another approach.
Instead of jumping on bandwagons all over and swapping between premiums I just try to make a case for tunnelvision on 4.5 defenders.

This has been almost my thought from the start.
4 to 5 big mids and a choice between TAA and Werner Or going without Salah.
