Che Adams (£6.0m) could offer value in Fantasy Premier League in 2020/21 if the way he finished last season is anything to go by.

The forward found the net four times in his final eight appearances of 2019/20, an encouraging statistic for anyone hoping he will nail down a starting place at Southampton.

If Adams can deliver on the promise shown at the back end of the previous campaign, there could be a knock-on effect of Fantasy darling Danny Ings (£8.5m), which is the focus of this article.

The Saints looked to be a lost cause when Leicester City beat them 9-0 back in October, but a remarkable turnaround in form led to 13 wins from their final 28 matches. In fact, following the restart, only Manchester City and Manchester United collected more points, which resulted in a comfortable mid-table finish.

Manager Ralph Hasenhüttl has since been rewarded with a new contract, and there is evidence he’s starting to build a really good team that could challenge for a European place next season.

So, in this latest article, I’m going to have a closer look at two of their forwards. A comparison piece between the two would have been unthinkable back in December, and is possibly still a bit unfair on Ings who had a formidable season.

But with Adams finishing strongly and coming in at a significantly cheaper price, I’m going to have a look at both players individually, before zoning in on the last four Gameweeks of the season to compare the data. Yes, it’s a small sample size, but could it maybe give us an indication of what to expect going forward?

As this uses Opta data, only those with a valid Fantasy Football Scout subscription can access it in full.

    The Bruno defensive effect:

9 of Man U's 13 clean sheets last season came in the 14 games with Bruno, which included 4 clean sheets against 5 opponents from the eventual top 8 (thereby excluding SHU who were in the top 8 at the time they played, and was also a CS)

Surely this is just fairly coincidental numbers in a small pool?

A stretch to claim Bruno is instrumental in United keeping clean sheets.

Re "United defence was tightening and Bruno then arrived much further up the field along the way":

In the 6 games Man U played before Bruno's first game (GW25), Man U kept two clean sheets, with 4 goals conceded against Liverpool in GW23, and 2 goals conceded against Burnley in GW24, followed by a clean sheet against Wolves in Bruno's first game, then a clean sheet against Chelsea in GW26

I mean actually watching the games and seeing the defence become a better unit, get the clean sheets that many times had been lost by individual lapses or worldy goals.

Or... it's just a total numbers game and it's all down to an attacking midfielder.

            Fine, you roll on, numberhead.

So your argument here is that Man U's defensive improvement was completely unrelated to Bruno's presence, even with 4 clean sheets in 24 games without him, then 9 clean sheets in 14 games with him... Because the individual lapses and worldie goals could only occur in the 24 games without him (enough to only keep 4 clean sheets), and somehow occurred rarely enough in 14 games with him for the team to finally keep 9 clean sheets, including 4 clean sheets from 5 games against the top 8 teams who'd usually be expected to be able to force those defensive errors or score those worldie goals?

I never said that it was completely unrelated, those are words you have for some reason attributed to me. "so your argument is..."

More like you are saying they are really closely related?

Look at how you started this thread

You said they are just fairly coincidental, and later called my post utter BS

How I started the thread: "The Bruno defensive effect: 9 of Man U's 13 clean sheets last season came in the 14 games with Bruno, which included 4 clean sheets against 5 opponents from the eventual top 8 (thereby excluding SHU who were in the top 8 at the time they played, and was also a CS)". I never said Bruno tackled a lot or pressed the ball high. I said there has been a clear correlation between Bruno's presence on the pitch and the presence of clean sheets for Man U, regardless of the opponent

                  Again, what is your point?

If you'd like me to go into your stats, which I've no real desire to, you have claimed here that United shipped four to Liverpool in GW 23.

That's completely wrong. You got it wrong by 100%, in fact.

If that basic stat is so wrong, how can I take the rest of what you're saying seriously? Given it is based only on numbers?

Yes, I made a mistake in the number of Liverpool goals. To avail everybody reading this of the opportunity to confirm the stats for themselves and hopefully note any mistakes, I attached links with the full details of the clean sheets, fixtures and goals conceded. If you feel there are any other stats I got wrong, feel free to calculate/count/check and point that out. At no point in my post have I claimed to be either superhuman or all-knowing. I get things wrong too, and things I say can be proven or disproven with stats and records

This is unrelated to the statistics of Man U's defensive record with Bruno in the side. If you have proof that they did not keep 4 clean sheets in 24 games before him, then 9 clean sheets in 14 games with him, or that Man U's defensive returns did not markedly improve from the first minute Bruno kicked a Premier League ball, I'd be happy to accept your point... Which you still have not made with any attempt of proof

                Jesus, this is desperate.

I don't care that much mate, I was just really saying that you seemed to be saying that Bruno was somehow key to United's run of clean sheets, when – as a United watcher – I thought that was a half-baked idea.

If you're so wed to that idea, fine.

The assumption that I do not keenly watch United either is not based on anything I've said here. I'm not comparing notes on what other specific factors (Ole, starting XI, team motivation, inspired performances, more wins, returning injured players, Greenwood, Shaw, Fred) improved Man U's defensive returns, just that these returns correlated with Bruno's first game for the side and stayed consistent until the season ended

There are countless other possible factors that could have come into play, but the clean sheets increased markedly for the team from the first game after he joined. That has been my point since the original post, and I have not changed nor modified it

You've not just said purely that United have had more clean sheets while Bruno has been in the team, regardless of other factors, as a statistical point.

Would you have preferred "Bruno's probably indirect influence on his team's defensive performance, pending further research as to why" as the title of my original post? If so, then accept my mistake of simplifying the title and not making my original post as long as my comments here tend to be

Yes, United have had more clean sheets while Bruno has been in the team, regardless of other factors, as a statistical point... Because it is a statistical point. The reasons for this, or reasons to prove that it's just a correlation and not causation, can then come after stating the statistical point

Coincidence is an interesting term to use here

In the 24 games Man U played before buying Bruno, they kept 4 clean sheets. In the 14 games they played with him in the side, 5 being against the top 8, they kept 9 clean sheets. An upgrade of 0.167 clean sheets per match (including before Pogba's injury) to 0.643 clean sheets per match with Bruno in the side

This gulf in defensive returns for the entire team is more than what can be attributed to mere coincidence or simple variance. A new player doesn't have to be a centre-back or DM to contribute to his side's defence, either directly (efficient pressing, ball recovery high up the pitch) or by simply elevating the team's confidence levels or being a missing piece that finally allows the side to control games more, making them concede fewer chances and hence fewer goals

I'm not discussing Bruno's defensive contributions to the side - tackles and what not - but referring to the effect of his presence/signing on the team as a defensive unit, as there was no other personnel change (yes, including Pogba) that brought this effect throughout the season

If 9 clean sheets in 14 games (including 4 in 5 games vs top 8) sounds like a coincidence to you, that's fine

The United defensive surge is interesting as it puts 5.5 defenders in play. AWB did really well in that period - less glam but he wasn’t far off matching Doh for value. If that repeats then that’s very interesting - premium points at a discount

Sorry, no. I watch United very, very closely and the reason for a run of clean sheets was not Bruno.

Okay, then what was the change completely independent on Bruno that led to a much higher rate of clean sheets from the first minute he kicked a ball for Man U in the league?

Again, I'm not saying Bruno brought in more tackles nor that he pressed harder than the previous player in his position. There has been much talk of how his presence improved the attack, but next to none about the effect of his signing on the defence, hence my statistics... Which you have said a few times is utter BS, without explaining anything with proof

It's not 'proof', at best it's a 'factor', and still an unproven one.

Blimey. You must understand there are many other factors at play in the run of clean sheets, not just the fact that Bruno was playing at the time?

                  • 7 Years

There are multiple factors that influence a team's defensive ability. The one visible, provable factor that changed when Man U went from 0.167 clean sheets per match to 0.643 clean sheets per match was the signing and immediate deployment of a new player: Bruno Fernandes

There will definitely be other factors, but the fact remains that in the 14 games with him, they kept 9 clean sheets, while they kept 4 clean sheets in 23 games without him. This includes 1 clean sheet in the 7 games they played with Pogba starting before GW25

I'm hereby asking you to provide any form of proof that the upturn in defensive performance of the team was unrelated to Bruno's presence, which is what my post is about. Again, I'm not referring to his defensive contributions as a player, but the immediate and sustained effect of his presence on the team

Yes, I made a mistake with the number of goals Liverpool scored, and I gave links which can be used to prove or disprove anything I say. The stats and records in the links I sent are independent of any human errors I might make in reporting them, so a slip in reporting one does not make every other stat you can see there in the link automatically untrue, so your argument of my one slip affecting all the stats (even though you can confirm the stats to be true) is not based on any facts

About my language, I have always talked in full detail and expressed my opinion or reported stats as clearly as I could. You can check my comment history. It is not based on whether I'm arguing or not, does not give me any sense of authority, and is something I was trained for 6+ years to do as a doctor, to reduce the chances of anything I say being miscommunicated to the patient. I'm sorry if this offends you... But how does this affect the fact that Man U's defensive returns increased from the moment Bruno joined the team?

He’s a good leader, had a pop at Lindelof the other night probably what some United players need.

I think it’s a stretch to say he’s responsible for the cleans. He’s one of a number of factors surely. What about Matic coming back into form?

Also, when Ole players the top sides does he not normally go quite defensive? Particularly v City, when he played a back five.

          Correlation isn’t causation.

True, Matic form certainly one. And your other points. There are lots more factors (just winning games is one).

What stattos round here will like as well, 'regressing to the mean' because our expected goals was quite a bit less that we'd conceded in the first half of the season.

Again, I have only reported the correlation without giving a reason for causation. There's been an effect of his presence when checking only returns. The causation or lack thereof can be proven with further stats or deeper analysis. But as seen in the world of statistics, when something changes suddenly and consistently due to the presence of another entity, this new entity is considered a factor, but the effect might not be understood nor the causation proven or disproven until deeper analysis, which I did not attempt to provide nor claim I had done

All I did was report that Man U kept this number of clean sheets in the games before him, and that number in the games without

It's not a total coincidence. Bruno's introduction has pegged back opposition players. They're afraid to commit too many men forward because they're well aware that he's more than capable of punishing them on the counter. While pre-Bruno they had no such concerns because they knew that Lingard/Pereira would mess up the counter 9/10 times.

      🙂

Issue I struggle with with these Man U stats is that if you combine them they would win the league. I don’t approve of that 🙂

Can’t help but feel that post restart had a strange dynamic. Just don’t know how to determine what’s likely to repeat and what not. Currently I’m just weighting all that form fairly lightly

And yes I know the Bruno effect in attack predates restart. Are United really contenders?

Interesting stats - it’s hard to deny that Bruno proved to be the missing piece in that side. His mentality and attitude have clearly had an impact throughout the entire side - something which I think people might not accept/ understand when there isn’t a stats table to quantify it!

Sadly, I only have the eye test for this, and I'm not an authority on the eye test. Getting the stats to prove or disprove his effect beyond just correlation takes a deep dive that I do not currently have the access to, or rather, would not do for free

It's possible to hazard a guess that it's due to increased possession or higher confidence or the entire first XI being on the pitch together (which later caused fatigue), but I can't back these up with links

      some notes:

      - TAA with 4.5 defenders (plenty 4.5 options)
      - 2 premium mids (Salah/Sterling/KDB/Auba)
      - Greenwood IF ManUtd doesn't bring anyone.
      - Werner-Mitrovic duo in attack, 15.5 mill, possible both on pens
      - Ramsdale @5.0 for sure. This season Sheffield GK and Burnley def.
      - Rashford as midfielder very tempting...

      Ramsdale, 4.0
      TAA + 3x4.5 + 4.0
2 premium (Salah&KDB safe opt), Rashford, Greenwood, Saint-Maximin
      Werner, Mitrovic (4.5 fodder)

3-5-2 with one 4.5 defender for rotation with SaintMaximin or others 4.5 defs.

Think I’d go B. What’s the 5 across the middle out of curiosity? Finding it hard to get 5 I want. I keep looking at premiums at the back who make the fourth fifth mid look poor value - and Trent Robbo and Doh are mids in all but name anyway

Remember now from page or so back. It’s potentially really strong isn’t it? You need to be able to fight EO fear but that’s never been an issue for me.

The one problem is have with it personally is the exit strategy if Foden became a liability. Negative thinking I know but as someone who over transfers I can see myself taking a minus 8!

I suppose Foden could be put into defence if you don’t have Doh - very few others in his range at midfield

Are we overlooking Mane simply because he has been priced the same as Salah?

Maybe I am being naive but if we are favouring Salah because he is on penalties then perhaps we need to think again. Liverpool were awarded 5 pens in the PL during the 2019/20 season. Salah took 3 while Milner took 2. Let’s assume for argument sake that Milner is no longer part of first XI, then Salah would take 2 additional pens if Liverpool were again awarded 5 pens this season. To me that does not justify why Salah would be a better pick than Mane especially if we consider the eye test when Mane appears to outperform Salah in most if not all the games.

Let me know what you think guys..

Pick whoever you think will get off to a better start. Season totals mean very little in this game (their season totals were identical last season anyway). It's about owning the right players at the right time. You will own neither the whole season.

The difference in ownership levels between Sterling and KDB, and Salah and Mane is way more than it should be. People just picking based on season totals. Sterling being fire during the restart seems to be completely forgotten.

I don't think he is being overlooked because of his comparison to Salah. I think it's because of all the love Auba, KDB, Sterling, Fernandes, Greenwood and Rashford are getting. I like Mané a lot, but most of those guys are ahead of him in appeal

The reason Salah’s ownership will be higher than Mane’s is because he scored more points last season.

The reason I am overlooking Mane is because I believe Salah to be a far better option with a far higher ceiling. It’s not even a question of value any more because they’re the same price.

      8. Ronniie
        • 5 Years

They’re prices the same; 5 penalties and that’s 25 points extra excluding bonuses.
        Salah scored more last season.
Salah has a higher ceiling than Mane imo.
If you watch Liverpool you’d notice Salah to be considerably more hungrier for individual glory. Selfish but good from an FPL point of view.

        I’ll pick Salah all day.

But can the games not be pushed a few days forward into midweek so they still fall into GW1.

The headline is “Manchester United and Manchester City to only miss opening Premier League weekend” but it doesn’t say when those fixtures would be played instead..

It says both of their seasons will kick off September 19 later in the article.

If it were to move into midweek, so they still fall in GW1, it gets complicated, as Spurs have a euro qualifier to play, and loads of other teams have EFL cup matches.

Not impossible of course tho, I'm not sure how reliable The Telegraph is re fixtures.

Anyone else worried about the Celtic/Aberdeen debacle happening in the Premier League this season?

I’ve seen a lot of double and triple ups, hell at the moment I have 12 from six clubs. It’s not I feasible to have a week where I have only 6 playing with four missing for rotation, one player benched and two fodder not featuring.

Thinking of avoiding it as much as possible. COVID ruined my FPL last season, don’t want that to happen again.

Nah. The Scots are useless at football and this sums up the quality of players and teams north of the boarder in the tinpot two team premiership. The same will not happen in the Premier League.

When the fixtures come out you’re gonna change it all anyway man.

Just go with what you think: if I’d answered “B” with no explanation would that have helped? That’s what most A or Bs seem to get.

Again it’s all on the fixtures now but DCL has low ownership as it stands. If they sign a decent midfielder then perhaps they’ll start well and he’ll be a nice difference maker.

A few years back, the excitement surrounding Mkhi moving to united was allover this site. He was in most rmt's. How can we be sure Werner isn't the latest Mkhi. Afterall chelsea have had their fair share of striker flops over the years...Morata, Torres, Shevchenko!

Firstly you can fortunately choose what you want to believe and if you want Werner in your squad. Secondly what relevance have different players playing for different managers in different teams with different tactics in different era's got to do with the way Chelsea will be playing under Lampard who clearly sees the player as enhancing their ability to be even more prolific scorers.

      8. Klaren
        • 8 Years

United was struggling with their attack when Mkhi arrived while Chelsea is playing under a manager with attacking mindset which has already been doing well with their attack with inferior players.

Also Morata actually did really well for the first 10 GWs or so when he came to Chelsea. So did other examples like Diego Costa, Salah, Aubameyang and many others.

since restart in the premier league, he played 670 minutes, scored 5 goals, and got 1 assist (not including one penalty he got). If you include that, thats 95mins per fantasy return.
He was very popular then bcs of his price, but now he has to compete with higher priced playes

            1. Klokan
              • 5 Years

martial in the same period played 755mins, scored 6 and assisted 4, not including 2 penalties.
with pens included, thats 63 mins per return, which makes him a better option in my opinion.
he is scoring a lot, and will get even more bonus points since he is a striker in fpl now

A bit weird that no DM known to be nailed came in at 4.5m, even from promoted sides

While FPL reduced the expected prices of premiums, they seem to have decided to take the 4.5m mid slot away in turn

Annoying, but not that much of a hindrance. I agree with the comments above on your available options though

17 minutes into my birthday here. Happy to see the fixture release ended up on the same day; as it does feel like some type of gift 🙂

You have 3 that you need to bench GW1.

Well aware of that. Just tinkering around. It’s only 1gw so thinking ahead of how to set up. The 3 can become pretty much any 3 combo amd -8 to get these in. Keep the Wc in the back pocket.
