There will be a different goalkeeper between the posts for Sheffield United next season.

Dean Henderson (£5.5m) has returned to parent club Manchester United after two years with the Blades and Chris Wilder has moved quickly to replace the departing loanee, snapping up Aaron Ramsdale (£5.0m) from relegated Bournemouth.

In this Moving Target article, we’ll assess the new shot-stopper’s prospects in Fantasy Premier League ahead of the 2020/21 campaign and whether the changing of the guard will affect Sheffield United’s clean sheet potential.

Ramsdale returns to the club he represented as a youth and has signed a four-year deal with the South Yorkshire side, who reportedly paid around £18.5m to land the 22-year-old shot-stopper.

Upon sealing the deal for Ramsdale’s services, Wilder said:

The goalkeeping situation is something we have to make sure we get right.

This is not about Dean, it’s about bringing Aaron in, but Dean was outstanding for us for two years. We know a lot about Aaron, we’ve watched him develop on loan at Chesterfield and then AFC Wimbledon and obviously we’ve watched him this season too.

I’d like to thank the board for their backing given the situation. Aaron is certainly amongst the best young goalkeepers in this country and we are delighted to have him.

The new Sheffield United number one said himself:

I spoke to him [Wilder] after the fee was agreed and a couple of days later he just said, ‘are we getting it done?’

I knew him, all of his coaching staff and Darren Ward [United’s goalkeeping coach].

It’s a place I always come back to and see friends if I ever get time off over the weekend and family members are only about an hour and a half away, so I get to see them more regularly as well.

Knowing the place, the training ground and the people so well, it definitely feels like home.

The History

Born in May 1998 and still in the embryonic stage of his professional career, Ramsdale hadn’t had any playing experience in the top two tiers of English football before 2019/20.

He had originally joined Sheffield United from Bolton Wanderers in 2013, progressing through the Blades’ academy system and graduating to reserve goalkeeper ahead of the 2016/17 season.

It was, fittingly, Wilder who handed him his senior debut, with the-then teenage custodian making two starts in the opening rounds of the FA Cup in late-2016.

Although Ramsdale didn’t make a single league appearance for the Blades, Bournemouth had already seen enough and snapped up the young shot-stopper for £800,000 in January 2017.

Over two years were to pass before he played a single competitive game for the Cherries and, in between, he was sent out on loan to Chesterfield and Wimbledon.

Ramsdale made 39 league appearances across those two half-season loan spells and it was in the second of them, with the Dons in League One, that he really caught the eye, keeping seven clean sheets in 20 starts and winning their 2018/19 Young Player of the Year award despite only joining the club midway through the campaign.

Returning to the south coast and featuring prominently in pre-season under Eddie Howe, Ramsdale was given the nod between the posts in 2019/20 and went on to start all but one of Bournemouth’s 38 league fixtures.

He kept just five clean sheets (no team registered fewer shut-outs than the Cherries) and conceded on 62 occasions but, as we’ll soon discuss, that was as much a reflection on relegated Bournemouth’s overall defensive shortcomings as it was an indictment on Ramsdale.

Indeed, only a fortnight ago, fans of the Cherries voted their former goalkeeper as their Player of the Season.

Thoughts on starting the season with Vardy (+ Werner)?
    Good fixtures. Proven track record.

Will Leicester create enough chances for him though?

      They should be good IMO.
Good fixtures for Leicester and as you said Vardy is proven in PL unlike Timo 🙂

What are the learnings from last season you're using in this season's draft ??

I learned that cheap attackers are unreliable and hence going to limit those spots to 2 (Armstrong & Mitro atm) in my team. Will play 4 atb many times with Soucek as 1st bench or in the 11 with 352.

I know it's a new season but still vary of those cheap attackers !

I wish i hold up early season form last season. Was around 14k mark just before Corona break. All hell lost after that though. 😕

But hopefully this season is ours 😉

Armstrong ASM is coin flip. I love Southampton's fixtures till GW 10 ish so thinking about Armstrong.

Swapping Mitro Armstrong for McNeil Adams is also a plan if McNeil signs for Leicester

              Fingers crossed mate.

I like McNeil but there will be him, Barnes, Albrighton, Gray who all get game time and switch flanks etc. That puts me off to be honest.

I like Southampton but rather than keep changing my team I'm just accepting you can't have them all.

Not that wary. You are willing to get two of them out of three.

I had it reinforced to play my own game. I found once I made up my mind then read what many were doing, it was different. I did well last season so each time I saw I was doing something others weren't I took it as a good sign.

I go hits crazy once things go bad.

I'm looking at that Salah spot as a rotation thing probably. Can get Bruno Auba if they look like having a plum fixture.

You can’t look too far ahead, because things change so rapidly. All this ‘season keeper’ stuff is unrealistic.

Anyone can break their leg or get injured and create new scenarios that we have to adapt to.

After lots of tinkering I have settled on having a cheap gk, 3 x prem def, 3 x prem mid (10.5+) and 1 x prem fwd (9.5+).

This gives me 'price' points to pivot in each position and allows a couple of cheap playing bench fodder.

Martial should be the highest goalscorer for United Unless a big injury layoff.

Looking at AWB just because he’s 5.5! Not quite true as the back of season returns and nailedness seals it but

5.5 is an interesting price point if you think Tierney Gomez and possibly SU

Easier to trade down than up

On my scheme there’s an extra 1.5 I can move into defence at will and AWB plus 1.5 gets me anything I want

After 21 games played last season, Liverpool was on top of the league. Leicester was on second spot. They had fallen behind on points, because of 4 losses, but kept track on Liverpool with goals for and against, almost.

    Liverpool: 20 games: 49 for, 14 against.

    Leicester: 21 games: 46 for, 19 against.

And this was Brendan Rodgers first season. And the first season of Tielmans and Perez. And Maddisons second season.

    Old news, but interesting.

They overperfomed then in first half ?

Over-reliance on Vardy to score goals maybe.

They fail to break down teams who sit deep. Lack creativity. Signing McNeil can solve that i guess 😮

I'm keeping tabs on that transfer. If it happens, I'd definitely get McNeil in my team instead of Mitrovic

      Yep

Rather more worrying is the United defensive form after Bruno arrival. It matches that Leicester form and more and, worse, put together with United attacking form would have them winning the league 🙁 🙁

And to add on a bit on overperforming, thats fine. But 46 goals is alot. Chelsea opened the season very nice, goalscoring wise, and they had 36 goals at same point in the season.

Think the defence situation can be overstated

The current injury situation is pretty much what it was before 30 - certainly nothing new. The core of the defence is the system and cover from midfield - personnel less critical than normal? Palace have to my mind the most central midfield in bottom 12 for defensive protection

Here's an idea (bit vague atm and difficult without Manc)...

You build a team and then see what have left with regards to your Soucek's and Mitrovic's and ASM's. Now if you're convinced they're worth it then by all means ignore this post.

However, if you're sceptical you'll get anything out if them, then one suggestion is to downgrade all those flakey, low price attackers to base price benchers and then use that money to seewhat can be done with the defence...

    So, for example:

    McCarthy
    TAA Doherty Egan Vinagre KWP
    Salah Auba Ziyech
    Werner Ings

Effectively, Mitrovic has become Doherty and ASM has become Egan...

    1. Ser Davos

I also hate those Midpriced attacker's. So have 2 of them playing in my team.
Armstrong & Mitrovic atm. They can be McNeil & Adams easily if i McNeil signs for Leicester

Close to my thinking but on a 4-4-2 basis with one designated ‘2 pointer’ somewhere in attack.

On that set up it feels as if you’re replacing unpredictable cheap attackers with almost equally unpredictable cheap defenders. Get one near base player and you can get one more reliable mid priced player and that means premium defence

Sounds like a good idea. Esp from GW10 onwards for the double up.

That said, although City’s GW2-9 fixtures aren’t that great, they still managed to score 18 goals in the corresponding fixtures last season (apart from Leeds away, of course). 2.5 goals per game. Not too shabby at all, so a double-up might come sooner. So many options this year, it’s great.

Held KdB from week 2 last time but this time I think he’s less likely to shoot up in value and that’ll make swapping in and out easier.

Sterling I think I’d the one to be on in prime fixtures - he’s at the pointy end and is a flat track bully

Intend to go Sterling quite a lot

Looks very nice, your defence is sound.Last season a lot of us went big at the back to start but by GW3 started to redistribute the funds further up the field.

Like you, I’m not convinced about Son, judging by the way he was hogging the touchline after the restart. Prefer Kane tbh. But Doherty Son Mitro (for example) looks stronger than Davies ASM Kane. Decisions decisions.

Struggling on the cheap midfielder front - would prefer 5.5 but could go to 6m:

Saka - ARS are stacked in midfield but feel he might prove the best option
ASM - only flashed late, then flatlined
Armstrong - good player but question marks over playing time
Pereira - WBA look like they'll struggle
Trezeguet - again, late to the party last season
Henderson - if not worried about using up a LIV spot?

    Any thoughts?

      Ah

Someone looking at Hendo too. Have him on a list - if you’re on double defence and think there are other premium mids who could equal Liverpool for value there he looks intriguing. Best value 5.5 if he stays fit I suspect.

Problem is when you want to captain Liverpool. For those fixtures you’d want double defence and premium mid
