Great Expectations

Can Leandro Trossard build on his debut FPL season and dodge the Brighton rotation?

Just before the start of the 2019/20 season, Brighton and Hove Albion signed Leandro Trossard (£6.0m) for a fee of around £15m.

I was very excited: he had just come off the back of the best season of his career, registering 14 goals and seven assists for Genk as they won the Belgian top flight.

His skilful playstyle and favoured position on the left wing combined with his Belgian nationality inevitably drew comparisons to the departing Eden Hazard.

Trossard tried to distance himself from the hype, but I couldn’t help but think we had pulled off a real coup.

The player said about himself:

I like one against ones. I’m quite fast, turning. I hope I can show you so you know how my style is.

Now reflecting on Trossard’s first season in the Premier League, I’ve been left a bit disappointed, both by Trossard’s overall performances (bar a couple of decent goals and display) and how I feel Potter has used him throughout the campaign.

I’m going to use this article to take a look at Trossard in more detail and hopefully, give a bit more insight into how I expect Albion to line up next season – and who (if any) of the Brighton boys we should be considering for our 2020/21 squads.

      What’s your definition of “differentials”

McCarthy 90% of teams here and 25% overall

You got literally the top three selected forwards.
      The top selected player.
The top two selected midfielders who are playing GW1.
Ziyech is 6th top selected midfielder.
Egan is fourth top selected defender.

      I could go on.

      Do you mean “not differentials”?

Top stuff, AZ. Trossard definitley one to watch but find him hard to merit from the start with some better 5.5 options out there.

If Brighton do go 2 up front more this year, would that be Connolly and Maupay? Connolly got two in pre-season the other day and one on the last fixture last season, seems pretty confident at the moment. Could be a feasible enabler at 5.5?

      Thanks bud 🙂

Yeah, more than likely Connolly and Maupay if we go up top, we don't really have anyone else. We didn't use two forwards that much last season. Honestly the rotation that's going to hit Brighton is going to be a nightmare. Apart from Ryan, Dunk, Lamptey and Maupay, anyone could play anywhere - it's a minefield. I wouldn't pay 5.5 for Connolly, let's hope Brewster signs for someone 🙂

The history of mids converting into FWDs doesn't bode well. Easy to get excited at rejuvenated Martial, but it is difficult when 5 becomes 4 and there's no more clean sheet point. I think he's good for 20 goals and could still be well worth vfm

Yeah, perhaps it's a mental block, but I don't perceive Martial as a traditional no.9. Things quickly change of course. In my head, Rashford and Auba are FWDs whilst Martial is a MID

I think Jose will stick to the 4231 when all fit.

Disappointing. Had him down as a must have at Wolves, and looked one of the best value players in the game.

Spurs are statistically a far worse defence, and we have no idea how he will do in a completely different system. Too many unknowns for my liking. Wait and see...

Spurs play four at the back but Mourinho pushes his right back incredibly far up the field like we saw with Aurier. Mou plays lopsided in defence as Bavies tucks in to become a third centre back almost, giving the attacking right back licence to get forward. Doherty will still be a great option if he keeps his goalscoring eye, it just depends how you value the Spurs defence against an incredibly well drilled, settled and effective Wolves backline.

I don't see why it would diminish his appeal, but some do.

At the end of the day he's an attacking full back at Wolves, so I'm sure they'd want him to offer the same at Spurs

13.33m a Messi is probably a little low, may need 225m to 250m.

      I prefer a 3-5-2 formation.

So much value in midfield this season 😆

Not really. If you have faith in one of them then nothing wrong with having faith with 2 of them while fixtures are good.

Is Mc Carthy still nailed with Foster back? Don't want to waste a FT on keeper

Comments by Southampton CEO Martin Semmes

"[Fraser Forster] has always been our player . . .he made an active decision to come back, he didn't want to play for Celtic anymore, he wanted to play for us and we'll give him that opportunity, so Fraser has taken full part in the squad since he's come back. . . .he's training so we'll see how it develops."

There's a post about this on reddit. The consensus is that McCarthy should start the season but Forster will be breathing down his neck. I reckon he comes in as another 4.5

Gunn is 4.5, so makes sense.

When Mina plays, Everton's xGC is actually pretty good. It took a sizeable dip when he was injured post restart.

Who would you say his 1st choice partner is, Keane or Holgate?

      He can’t stay fit though.

      That’s tough.
Probably Keane and Holgate are first choice now simply because Yerry is always coming back from an injury.

I’d prefer Holgate with Mina personally. Keane loses confidence quickly.

    Doherty

    - If he as expected gets the same freedom as Aurier does, he should do very well
    - While Aurier is still at the club, there's rotation risk
    - With Spurs in Europa and Jose's approach to take cups seriously, I imagine Doherty will be playing there too

So while he has the potential to be very good at Spurs, I rather wait and see to be honest
