Great Expectations

Can Leandro Trossard build on his debut FPL season and dodge the Brighton rotation?

Just before the start of the 2019/20 season, Brighton and Hove Albion signed Leandro Trossard (£6.0m) for a fee of around £15m.

I was very excited: he had just come off the back of the best season of his career, registering 14 goals and seven assists for Genk as they won the Belgian top flight.

His skilful playstyle and favoured position on the left wing combined with his Belgian nationality inevitably drew comparisons to the departing Eden Hazard.

Trossard tried to distance himself from the hype, but I couldn’t help but think we had pulled off a real coup.

The player said about himself:

I like one against ones. I’m quite fast, turning. I hope I can show you so you know how my style is.

Now reflecting on Trossard’s first season in the Premier League, I’ve been left a bit disappointed, both by Trossard’s overall performances (bar a couple of decent goals and display) and how I feel Potter has used him throughout the campaign.

I’m going to use this article to take a look at Trossard in more detail and hopefully, give a bit more insight into how I expect Albion to line up next season – and who (if any) of the Brighton boys we should be considering for our 2020/21 squads.

Think I'm going to stick just one up front with Werner or Ings

Then focus on three big hitting mids and having solid defenders for vfm

        Yes, good point.

Not dismissed the idea of Mitro or Brewster as single strikers.

I thought I'd do this before the game launched but I keep getting drawn to bargain basement defenders. It's a sickness.

        Cheers,
Obviously Dallas and Ayling are good attacking options from our defence.
Like Klich (on pens) and Harrison in midfield and when/ if Rodrigo signs hopefully he's reasonably priced

    Mccarthy (Nyland)
    TAA, Dier, Vinagre, Justin (Lamptey)
    Salah, Auba, Ziyech, Armstrong (Greenwood)
    Mitrovic, Antonio (Davis)

3.5 ITB, planning on doing Antonio to Martial for GW2, still got 1mil ITB to play with, any ideas how I could use this? Greenwood would obviously come in for GW2

Doherty leaving means Vinagre is a good pick again, while his ownership is high 16% atm (casusal dont know about Maitland-Niles lurking)

Not sure I follow, AMN is a right back isn't he? Why would that affect Vinagre? Was AMN expected to take over at left back for Wolves or something?

He definitely played on the left a fair bit but they probably knew Doherty was gonna leave and that's why they've gone for him.

Seems more plausible. Would have been interesting to see what happened if AMN signed and Doherty didn't leave. Plenty of Wolves fans I know think Doherty's strengths going forward don't make up for being the defensive weak link. Would have been a lot of fun to see the chaos when highly owned Doherty got benched 🙂

Interesting, I know he's played there a handful of times but I'd have been surprised to see him move to a team who wanted him there as a priority, especially only as cover for an injured player. Guess we'll never know.

Sounds odd, but now Doherty's at Spurs that leaves just Pool Big 3 as the premiums (Laporte aside) at the back

i've gone round in circles, and after being set on the set-and-forget triple pool defence, along with doherty, i've ripped it up and gone 3 x premium mids with just TAA as an expensive defender, might change my mind again soon though 😀

I'm with you. Currently thinking benching three City, have a poor GW1, but thinking Laporte, KDB, Sterling can make up for it

i've got salah, mane and auba as 3 premium mids, and will plan mane to bruno gw2, and auba to kdb gw3, werner and mitro up top, taa + 4.5s in defence, can always revert to my original pool defence triple up later on if they're looking solid and cheaper performing mids show themselves as alternative options to the big premiums

    Thoughts on this:

    Ryan/4.0

    TAA/VVD/Doherty/Vinagre/5.5 (AWB longer term )
Auba/ASM/Soucek/Fernandes/Salah (Changing to Sterling after GW1)
    Mitrovic/Wickham/Bamford

Plan on playing 451 or 541

Always found this "find me a midfielder at price X who can match this defender" argument a bit weird. Applies to almost any half decent regularly starting defender.

Won't be many 4.5m midfielders outscoring Charlie Taylor. So what?

Only just started the game but I don’t get it either, would stack up if you could choose 11 defenders but you’ve got to have 5 mids so at some point that line of thinking doesn’t stack up

Exactly, in context of a specific team it can allow you to prioritise where to spend discretional funds but on a player by player basis it's irrelevant.

    A) 6.0 & 4.5, e.g. Ward-Prowse & Stephens
    B) 5.5 & 5.0, e.g. ASM/Saka & Soucek

Yeah If one plans to use the free transfers to bring in City and Utd players in Gameweeks 2 +3 it leaves no room to remove any injured/suspended players or jump the early season bandwagons like Lundstram from last season without taking multiple hits

In fairness, taking a 4 point hit at the start of the campaign for players from Utd and Citeh isn’t exactly going to sink people’s season, now, is it!

One thing is for sure, Doherty will be a massive upgrade for Spurs vs Aurier.

Depends on how well he adapts to a back 4

Should be fine going forward, less so when defending

    Why no love for McGinn/grealish,,?

I am thinking of McGinn in first wildcard, as manc players will be priority after gw1

      For me - cos Villa.
For many - cos, like Burnley, missing from GW1.

Yup agreed. Only issue is no real good 5.5 mid. Don't like asm, armstrong and soucek, but yes will have to pick 1/2 of them

    In a 4-42 would you rather upgrade a 4.0 def to a 4.5 def or a 4.5 mid to a 5.0 mid?

      4.5 mid to 5.0 (Soucek)

5.0 mid will not outscore a 4.5 defender.

The defender. 5m mid - there's only one, with awful fixtures.
4m defenders - all dodgy > 4,5 def - plenty of choice, can hop from one to another according to f&f

Too hard to generalise if you ask me, it depends upon the specific options available. If there's a regularly starting 4.0 defender for an ok team (Lundstram last year, AWB the year before) then you can probably upgrade the midfielder. If FPL have got their pricing right though then the extra 0.5 probably does more in defence.

    Thoughts?

    McCarthy
    TAA Robbo Doherty Mitchell
    Salah Son Ziyech Soucek
    Kane Werner

    Bench: Nyland, Ferguson, Gordon, Brewster*

    Any love for AWB?

I find it easier to stomach benching a 5.5m def in GW1 rather than a 7.5m mid.

I think he will be a pretty decent addition. I am greenwood bench and don't have another alot for 5.5. will probably get him, bruno and sterling in first 5/6 weeks

There does not seem to be any love for UTD defence. I won't be picking any either.

    This is affordable:

    TAA - VVD - Robb - KWP - Vinagre
    Auba - KDB/Sterling - Bruno - Soucek
    Ings

    .5

How do you get to Werner for example if he hits the ground running?

      1. Ser Davos
        • 8 Years

        Possibly ignore him tbh

But there's several cash cows there to tap into. Did try squeezing Werner in

I like it other than that caveat, Werner has high ownership already and if he scores well first GW a lot of people will be piling in. Perhaps Gomez for one of Robbo or VVD would give a bit more flexibility.

I think you're right. VVD can become Laporte, Ings to Werner

a playing 4.0m defender would allow you Werner, Mitchell/Johnson being touted, but might be a risk obviously

Gradually coming round to the idea of a Salahless team.

May not even bother with him in GW1 if Im only going to be dumping him for Bruno in GW2. Might just punt on Son for a week instead.

There’s enough premium mid options now that not having Salah doesn’t require a couch to hide behind anymore.

Do you prefer Auba (ful) for the captaincy instead of Salah (LEE)?

        Yep, armband is on Auba.

Leeds are far better than Fulham.

Both will likely lose, but Fulham‘s defence should be breached often by Arsenal if they’re in the mood.

Salah is in my team at the moment, but I’m likely to be shipping him out for Bruno in GW2 and then Auba to KdB in GW3.

If you expect the other premium mids to outscore him, then it's very valid to go without. He's not that much more expensive than KDB though.

With Messi looking like he may join Man City, is Aguero being massively overlooked? I have yet to see a single team with him, and he's the cheapest he has been in ages. Would surely nag more goals in a side featuring Messi, KDB & Sterling....possibly a steal at £10.5m

I wonder how often Pep will want to play the two aging attackers together rather than opting for a player who can actually press effectively? Wouldn't be surprised if Messi's arrival sees more rotation for Kun.

Sterling looks most interesting IF messi arrives. All the defs doubling up the left side where messi/kdb play leaving sterling with space and tap ins a plenty.

Although i doubt messi actually joins city

Aguero could be great especially if jesus goes the other way.
