Pro Pundits - Mark

How I’ll try to keep pace with the new smart thinkers in FPL this season

When I returned to Fantasy Football in 2006, a statistics fetish and the quest for one-upmanship over my rival Granville inspired this website and underpinned some high ranks in Fantasy Premier League. I got myself a flying start, an early advantage.

Almost fifteen years later, the pitch has been levelled.

I have to admit, when Fantasy Football Scout became my universe, I buried my head and shut out the social media powered community that grew up around me. I built walls and obsessed about protecting what I had, forgoing likes and subscribers to keep my roof intact.

Now free of those concerns, I was shocked when I reared my head to look around. Both the depth and breadth of the FPL community is extraordinary, the amount of information and data being shared openly overwhelming.

Eight million managers make a high rank that more difficult to achieve, but the explosion of new voices spraying knowledge and opinion far and wide raises the bar with each passing season.

Metrics

Back in the day, I was among a few hundred who wandered trance-like down supermarket isles deliberating a four-point hit. Now there are thousands extending loo breaks to unfeasible lengths of time while they compare Sadio Mané (£12.0m) and Mohamed Salah (£12.0m) for touches in the box. Like myself all those years ago, they have spreadsheets, irritated partners and an insatiable drive to succeed: a triple threat.

I need to raise and change my game if I’m to remain in their company.

Too long in the tooth and arrogant to be told the latest do’s and don’ts or ten tips for success, I know the mechanics of the game and how to bend them to my advantage. To really improve, I need to look hard at myself, analyse my methods and learn from mistakes.

I’ve always hurried away from FPL failure. I’m almost ashamed that dismal Gameweeks spark family tension in garden centres, so why would I ever dwell on every error? I bury mistakes to maintain an equilibrium. Forget that bad transfer, move on, greet the next deadline as a liquor to quickly drown my sorrows.

That changes now. I should see my mistakes as an opportunity to learn more about how I play, to identify my favourite error traps and the bias at play when I run my eye over Match of the Day highlights or Goals Imminent tables.

Thanks to an almost catastrophic campaign in 2019/20, I have plenty to pick apart. I’ve learned to enjoy looking back and attempting to fathom my thought process behind each bad decision. But that’s just a post mortem; I need to attack this new season with this same analytical mindset.

I have to be more inquisitive as each Gameweek rolls by, question and challenge each decision I make and develop methods that reveal a clear choice that I’m happy to take, not just one I’ve convinced myself is correct by brute-forcing fuzzy numbers and rose-tinted eye tests.

You might have noticed that psychology is a popular buzzword right now, an emerging theme in the community that can be conveniently tucked away in a bulging box file labelled “overthinking”.

But I’m convinced that something is afoot. When Magnus Carlsen, the world’s finest Chess player, hits the FPL top 100, we need to stop in our tracks and consider that there could be a new breed among us.

I reckon your average Grandmaster spends more time pondering King to G7, rather than King to centre forward. So I might have the edge on Magnus when it comes to thinking time, I may even have more knowledge and data at my disposal.

But does Magnus employ a logical method to his decisions and keep bias and emotion in check? Does he indulge in bouts of introspection and analysis of his judgement calls? Does he read all those psychology threads on Twitter with a knowing smile?

He’s the best chess player in the world. He does all the above and has a team of advisors doing it for him while he sleeps.

These days everyone can get a glut of knowledge, information and data in their timeline with relative ease. But to work out how best to process it, how you learn to separate luck from skill and focus on improving the input, not dwell on the output, that might just be the new marginal gain. A fresh route to success.

After last season, I’ll give anything a go.

Magnus must be petrified.

Best players by position:

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

the picture half way through the article got me thinking, "hope mark isn't the fpl mourinho" (instant and prolific success followed by a sudden loss of powers and seemingly unable to flick the switch back on).
in the end i thought no and continued with the article as whilst i have zero confidence in mourinho getting back to 'special one' status i'd be very surprised if mark doesn't bounce back.

Everyone can have a bad season; mark’s bogey year was the one just.

His critical thinking will be very enjoyable to watch this season for sure.

I firmly believe Mark felt that moving away from the noise (partic last few years) would benefit him but because of this bad rank he knows he has to engage in the community fully. Having his team questioned most weeks will benefit his decision making aswell.

was a little surprised that moving away from the community didn't work. if you have the tools (and time) yourself I think that is the best approach still personally. at the very least the most rewarding

Requires a great deal of self-discipline. Was watching some old Scoutcast videos from 16/17 season and Mark flourished when he was forced to lay out his rationale every Wednesday. Perhaps he missed this part; I am not sure.

I think Mark definitely might go the Mourinho route. He traditionally has played with a stubborn-ness that has served him very well but a lot is based on gut instinct over statistics and since that has failed him last season, I think a more 'template' approach at least to start and stabilize might be preferable.

We'll see how well he can adapt.

It’s funny, a week back everyone had 1 prem striker and 1 budget

Now there is a shift to two prem strikers and 343 or 433

      McCarthy / Steer (or Nyland)
      Vinagre, Saliba, Justin, Davies, Bednerak

      Sarah, Auba, Son, Saka, Greenwood

      Werner, Ings, Davis

Bruno & KDB will come in on Gw2

I see LukeBennet above has a draft with Eze.

6m midfielder at Palace. Same price as Ayew, 1m cheaper than Zaha.
What views on him? Worth a punt? My feeling is with their fixtures, it's a wait-n-see.

I think Ings, like Jimi are super-safe bets to plod along with regular returns. Werner could explode, or be a damp squib. It's a matter of risk v safety.

Is that a serious question? Ings is your jiminez really rarely scores two but consistently gets the goal with bonus. Chelsea are becoming like a new man city. Expect Chelsea to concede goals this year but they could easily score 100 goals this season. Werner is explosive and talent. If Chelsea get it working Werner will smash it this year. You have a choice of going Werner with the unknown risk of how so many new players will gel or ings who you can expect will hit the ground running with a safe 9 pointer

It’s really a matter of what kind of manager you are. If your steady and don’t like risks you pick ings. If you like a punt and are a bit more into risk you go Werner. Werner at some point will be a big goal scorer but it’s a Chelsea team with a lot of new players and many of them have come back from vacation with Covid. This will disrupt what Lampard had in mind

Who do people think will score more as a gw1 captain? Salah or aubameyang. Salah can be a monster at home and I personally think Leeds get beaten 4-0. Leeds played possession football in championship that won’t work against Liverpool. Then you have Aubameyang game is away which if fine for auba and Fulham are not great defensive. I can see both Salah and auba going big gw 1 what does everyone else think?

I’m steering clear of Doherty if he goes to Tottenham. Mourinho doesn’t play with wing backs he likes a back 4. Doherty won’t be given a license to get forward like he did with wolves. All you would be getting is clean sheets so may as well get dier for safety and bank the mil

Disagree, think he'll be allowed to get forward just sticking wider rather than cutting into the box.

Don't see anything historical to suggest he'll be prevented from cutting in. Sure he might not be camped in the box like a striker anymore, but he'll be playing for a team that'll likely put in 15-20 more goals than wolves

Aurier had boatloads of room but his service was shocking as well as the odd brainfade at the back. To me Jose has spotted this and rectified the player not the system. If Kane can deal with the service as well as Jimmy did I expect several assists.

Just was looking at Son's stats and he seems to be an exceptional value. He is scoring around 170 points a season despite playing only aorund 65% of possible minutes. If fully nailed and fit he can easily break the 200 points this season. His xG stats aren't that great but he seems to be overperforming it year by year so he just seems to be a good finisher.

I haven't had a draft without Alli and Ziyech

I haven't had a Manchester plan that involved selling Alli or Ziyech

I consider them underpriced with likely 200-point seasons ahead of them

He's had half a season under Mou. I'd like to see more of this season's tactics, esp with Doherty. It looks to me like Doh will push forward down the right, but on the left flank Davies will stay further back and give Son free reign. If Son's allowed to cut inside and get into the box plenty, he's be great FPL material. But I want to see how Mou uses him to be sure.

Fair point. But if they play Mourinho's 4-2-3-1 (or 4-1-4-1 depends how you call it) he can play a role similiar to Hazard at Chelsea, with the left winger going forward, left full back covering for him, right winger tracking back and right full-back going higher up the pitch. I would rather he played as a 2nd striker but on the wing I think he could play very well too.

Agreed, it’s why I’m starting with Son and a 6.0 mid with 1.5 ITB.
Gives me a choice of to just go Greenwood for the 6.0 mid if Son explodes at the start, if not an easy Son to Bruno transfer.

#thfc are understood to have several Covid cases. France midfielder Tanguy NDombele has been confirmed as testing positive and at least two more at Spurs have the virus | @SamiMokbel81_DM @MattHughesDM

    I have triple Spurs...

Definitely a factor that's going to be causing serious issues this season, I wonder how the PL will deal with it. You'd expect they'd keep the players disciplined like during Project Restart, this could just be due to the 30-day break.

Just a reminder for those of you with your teams linked then you need to update your link with this year's FPL ID. I'm seeing absolutely loads of links that are either out of date (wrong manager) or showing this error message:
'Sorry, but the page you were looking for can't be found' .
For those of you now deciding to link your team for the first time, your link needs to be of the format
    https://fantasy.premierleague.com/entry/nnnnnn/history
where nnnnnn is your FPL ID. You can find your FPL ID on the Gameweek History page in the address bar:

The more I watch Leeds, the more I'm falling in love with Bielsa. The fast paced vertical tiki-taka is so satisfying to watch. It's possession with a purpose. When the smallest gap appears, boom, exploited with a direct pass and they have a shot within seconds. With every clip, or Bielsa lecture, the more they go up in my estimations.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nO6sFMYOpF4

But I still think they're going to be shafted by Liverpool...

Complete crush on him here. Think I’ve watched everything available on YouTube.

Really interesting match up with Liverpool. As I understand it the game plan is likely to push Robbo and TAA right back and that’s where the battle is likely won or lost. If Liverpool are to crush them they’ll either need to restrict Leeds possession or find a Mo who doesn’t need chance after chance

    2.5 itb

i like to plan ahead a couple of weeks and gw2 fixtures

    saints / spurs
    chelsea /liverpool

largely affect my gw1 team so,

no aubameyang ,not going to captain and difficult to jettison if he scores well ,kdb is my selection of the two

no chelsea to start ,just a new team and lets have a look first ,also playing my keeper and pool def gw2

son to kdb gw2 ,2.5 in the bank

reasonable bench overall and no need for hits early doors
