The key underlying statistics I consider when picking my new FPL squad

I think I’ve written about enough subjective theories and opinion until now. What I’m doing with this article is I spent some time in the Premium Members Area and I thought I’d give you some relevant handpicked stats that are simple yet relevant.

As this article uses Opta data so extensively, only those with a valid Fantasy Football Scout subscription can access it in full.

Without wasting any more time, let’s dive in.

Who are the best and worst defences?

All of this data is but a snippet of the notes I take whenever I spend time in the Premium Members Area. Hopefully you found this information helpful as you prepare your team for the new season.

Tempted by Antonio now - albeit the injury and fixtures are such a turn off!

Thanks for this Lateriser, I've had Jimenez & Adams as my forward line for a while but your article has made me consider whether a Saints double up of Ings & Adams is doable. Certainly, they are good both picks in isolation, but it comes down to whether Saints will score enough.

My plan would be to eventually transfer over to Martial once I've shuffled my midfield slightly more Manchester-centric, but for a time I would be reliant on Saints form.

Other players you've made me consider more are Sterling, Foden & Antonio, although they would be future transfers.

      Thanks again!

Great article, probably my favourite so far.

Certainly left me thinking about swapping jiminez for Werner but not sure who I'd downgrade Son to. Not sure i fancy Ziyech.

How important do we feel Bruno is? For example, if Utd don’t sign sancho:

    A. Bruno and mitrovic/Adams
    B. Greenwood and martial

    Same price

Very good apart from 3 things:

      Branthwaite --> Mitchell

      Justin --> Taylor

      Keita --> ASM

Thanks. Two questions: Is Mitchell more nailed on than Branthwaite? Is Justin not worth a punt for Leicester defense?
I understand wanting to invest early in Burnley defense though.

Justin is worth it short term however, Pereira is expected back next month so he'll lose his place then

Can't see Leicester keeping too many CS's with no Jonny Evans for first 3 games + Pereira injured & Chilwell gone

That's a big chunk to take out of any teams defence

            • 5 Years

Do you think Taylor's price will rise before Justin's? I'm trying to anticipate a potential +£0.2 riser in the 4.5 range just in case a midfield/forward target rises before I can transfer them in.

    2. TheComRED-YNWA

      2) Will use the .5 from that transfer to Ings->Martial

Only thought is, you’ll probably have to do those transfers pretty early after the game week to make sure you don’t miss price rises

Good point.Do you think a -4 to double transfer after GW1 is worth it? I was trying to not bench my money.
Also, should I do Son->Ziyech/Pulisic to leave funds in case I want to Ings-> Martial first?

I personally don't think it's wrong to bench 1 Manchester asset (2 would be too many).
A blank gameweek any other stage in the season and no one bats an eyelid really.

From elsewhere (for what it's worth)

"Van de Beek is also very much a productive midfielder. In 135 appearances (Eredivisie and the Champions League) he has found the net 33 times and set up 27 goals. His trademark goal is the result of a late run, full of drive and purpose, into the box, more often than not cutting in from the left to finish in the far corner with his favoured right foot. While the overly critical may point out that his finishing skills still have room for improvement, his ability to find space in the penalty area and anticipate the course of the ball is already at a remarkably high level."

Predominantly a box-to-box midfielder -- though he's also had stints as a "holding" player in front of the defense -- Van de Beek features all the essential skills that make up a modern central midfielder. He is excellent on the ball, has an exceptionally well-developed footballing brain and boasts the ability to cover a lot of ground.

Interesting as always, great info. I wonder if Spurs numbers are exaggerated by their style of play, they like to sit deep and allow shots (Highest amount allowed during the restart) which racks up xG numbers. There was certainly not much wrong with the goals they conceded - Sheffield United aside - and they limited their opponents to very few big chances, joint-2nd in that respect for the restart period. Hojbjerg over Winks/Sissoko should help too.

Chelsea create a ton of big chances for their forwards, Werner should be an incredible option in Lampard's attacking system. With those fixtures, I don't mind the risk and clearly 40+% other managers don't either.

Villa were very impressive defensively, put in a few gutsy displays on their way to survival. If Dean Smith doesn't foolishly return to the 1DM formation they should be a lot more difficult to beat this year.

"The bottom five for xG (of those who stayed up)... It is worth noting that Spurs were sixth-worst on this list."

Lloris did well (+7) and Kepa the opposite (-13). Yet good keepers might be more able to save low xG shots, but big chances may be simply impossible to save (Ederson is good keeper). So perhaps there is a good chance that Spurs can trust Lloris and we for example cannot trust Shu defense anymore.

Hard to say if Doherty is enough, but he's in my team at least.

Good work LR. Was knocking about in the members area myself yesterday for a bit & looked at those same xGC team stats for post-lockdown. As you say, Chelsea desperately need a new GK.

    No love for Mane?
    My thinking was to;
    - have *BOTH* Salah & Mane for GW1
    - assess which is looking better
    - ditch the lesser of the two for Bruno in GW2

But the collective wise mind here seems to favour Son in that 'third MID' spot (behind Mo & Auba).
Carlo appears to be strengthening at Everton and Mourinho's Spurs looked flat as post-PR (yes I know 2nd season yadda yadda yadda) whereas Mane is at home up against a newly promoted side and in just 12% of teams (as it stands).

    Potential upside?

That’s 1.5 mil you’ve got locked in a player in GW1 - it’s not bad plan but I like to have more balance - son is actually 3mil cheaper so it goes a long way

Too much of a difference isn't it!

So... succumbing to the herd, my team with Alli would be:
            McCarthy/4.0*
            TAA/Doherty/Vinagre/KWP/Mitchell
            Auba/Salah/Son/ASM/Soucek
            Werner/Adams/Brewster

*waiting out on Button news and Steer vs Nyland clarity.

Yeah, not insignificant. And that's probably why my head is being turned.
I keep coming back to the fact though that we are (most of us) aiming at a GW3 team (be that through tfrs or WC) and so GW1&2 is there to 'have a little fun' and retro-fit the tfrs to where you want to get to.

To be fair though, Mane IN the team allows only a 352 or 451, whereas OUT of the team, you can play any formation.

Do we think EL kills Spurs clean sheets early on in the season? Thinking of dropping Spurs defenders altogether...

Enough of a doubt to avoid for now, imo.

I think so, i had Aurier in early drafts and I saw a small minority toying with dier but receiving generally negative comments - Doherty transfers to spurs and everyone then rationalises whether he’s still a good pick but it goes further because after Doherty is determined still to be a good pick, a swath of managers looking to benefit from the extra 1mil opt for a downgrade - suddenly 5.0 spurs defenders in every draft!

For me, i'm happy to double up Lloris + Doherty, quite trust with Mou on this.

Even clean sheet gone, still gonna rack up save pts from Lloris and attacking returns from Doh

Posted this a couple of days back.

Best to avoid for now. First game is late KO against Everton which probably could be a cagey 1-1 affair. Then they travel to Belarus for their one-legged EL qualifier and then back for early KO away to Southampton, a game in which I see goals for both.

    A) Play Johnson/Bissouma

    B) Get a placeholder and sell for a hit in GW2

How's this team looking for GW2? Will find a placeholder for either KdB og Bruno to play in GW1

    McCarthy 4.0
    TAA Doherty Digne Vinagre 4.0
    KdB Bruno Auba Alli Soucek
    Mitro Adams Brewster

    Thoughts on this draft?

    McCarthy Steer
    TAA Dier Saiss Vinagre Ayling
    Auba Alli Greenwood Soucek Reed
    Vardy Werner Ings

Gw2: Greenwood, Ayling & maybe Steer off the bench
Gw3: flexibility of 2 transfers, can do a mini WC if necessary

i like to start without Greenwood, giving a chance to Ziyech / Willian / Havertz and then if blank and Green is a surefire to start (no quarantine/sickness/new winger/etc) then it's a swap but if not, then Ings > Martial

I like it, teams feel better balanced with a Son/Alli over Salah. Going Salahless a worry for you?

It is a little but my thinking is if I'm not going to captain him too often in the first few fixtures, then I can go without

Found my current favourite for GW1:

    McCarthy
    Vinagre, Justin, TAA
    Son, Auba, KDB, Salah, Pulisic
    Werner Mitrovic
    (Martin, Wickham, Ferguson, Casey)

Then plans is by GW4 or so Auba > KDB, Son > Fernandes and Pulisic > Greenwood.

    McCarthy
    TAA Vinagre Doherty
    Son Salah Aura Mount Soucek
    Ings Calvert-Lewin
    (Nyland, Walker-Peters, Brewster, Ferguson)

Thinking Salah > Fernandes in GS2 and Auba > KdB in GW3
