How does Kai Havertz compare with Chelsea’s other FPL attacking assets?

Chelsea have continued their spending spree this summer with the acquisition of one of the most coveted young talents in Europe, Kai Havertz.

The attacking midfielder has signed a five-year deal with the Blues, following in the footsteps of Timo Werner (£9.5m) in moving to west London from the Bundesliga.

Arguably the club’s biggest statement since the signing of Eden Hazard from Lille, the German has been priced up at £8.5m – in a similar bracket to Christian Pulisic (£8.5m) and Hakim Ziyech (£8.0m) – by Fantasy Premier League and has the potential to be a real bargain.

Anyone who dabbled in Fantasy Bundesliga this summer would have been excited by what they saw – including some ‘out of position’ run-outs up front – so we’ll assess his FPL credentials in the article below.

Born in Aachen, Germany in June 1999, Havertz started out in amateur football at just four years of age for Alemannia Mariadorf where his grandfather, Richard, was club chairman. His father was a policeman and mother a lawyer so discipline was something that was impressed upon him at a young age.

It was his grandfather who encouraged him in his younger days, spending time with the youngster knocking down gnomes in the garden with his left foot. Richard’s passing when Havertz was just 10 led the German to join his first professional club, Alemannia Aachen.

He only spent a year with his hometown club, with a hat-trick against Bayer Leverkusen in an 8-3 loss impressing them enough to make them sign the youngster. He was highly sought after by clubs across the country, including Borussia Monchengladbach and Koln, but Leverkusen pulled out all the stops to sign the exciting prospect.

He notched seven goals and two assists over 23 appearances in his first season in the U17-Bundesliga West but the next season was where he really shone.

After scoring 18 goals, he was awarded the silver Fritz Walter Medal in the 2015/16 season after being named the second-best German under-17s player; two years later he won the gold in the under-19s category.

In October 2016, at 17 years and 126 days of age, he became the youngest debutant in Bayer Leverkusen’s history and later became their youngest scorer with a strike against Wolfsburg in April.

He went on to become the youngest ever player in the Bundesliga to register 50 appearances. Coincidentally, the previous holder of that record was his new Chelsea teammate, Timo Werner. Havertz was also the youngest ever captain of Leverkusen.

After seven goals and 13 assists in his first two seasons, 2018/19 saw him become a household name in Germany with 17 goals from midfield, becoming the first teenager to hit that total in a Bundesliga season.

Nine of Havertz’s 17 goals gave Leverkusen a 1-0 lead and no player in the Bundesliga opened the scoring more frequently that season. Manager Peter Bosz’s attacking philosophy gave him a platform to flourish and he featured in every single game that campaign.

He took three penalties that season, posting an xG of 13.1 and a non-penalty xG of 10.9; this would indicate that he is a good finisher.

“I guess reading the game has always been one of my strengths. A certain composure on the ball and the ability to make the right choices quickly.” – Kai Havertz

Havertz started off the 2019/20 season by becoming the second-youngest player in Bundesliga history to score 25 goals with a strike against Paderborn on the opening day. He went on to register 12 goals and six assists that campaign with an xG of 9.1. Only one of these was a penalty, which meant his non-penalty xG was 8.3. Again, he outperformed his xG significantly and even upped his xA to 6.2.

Over his last three seasons, his non-penalty xG+xA per 90 numbers have been on the rise every year and he averages an expected goal involvement every other game over that period.

“If you can always be one or two steps ahead of your opponent, you can already win the game, and I think that’s just the player he is.” – Leon Bailey, Havertz’s teammate.

Comparison v other Chelsea assets

Ziyech18.252.220.834.80.070.21
Havertz42.4584143.10.190.44

Unlike Ziyech, Havertz is not a volume shooter who takes a lot of speculative shots from outside the box: his minutes/shot is the lowest in the comparison.

However, a large percentage of the youngster’s efforts are on target (43%), compared to the Moroccan (34.8%). In fact, his goals per shot (0.19) is almost triple that of Ziyech’s (0.07).

What’s even more impressive is that Havertz scores with nearly half of his shots on target (44%) whereas Ziyech is closer to 20%. He even bests Werner, who has goals/shot of 0.18 and goals/shot on target of 0.38.

In terms of creativity, only Ziyech (20.8) created chances more frequently than Havertz (41) last season.

The Prospects

Havertz spent most of the 2019/20 season deployed as a no. 10, also featuring on the right flank and at centre-forward at times. Given that Ziyech’s preferred position is on the right wing and Pulisic has been effective on the left, Lampard is expected to use the German behind his compatriot Werner.

Werner is a very different striker compared to Olivier Giroud (£7.0m) and Tammy Abraham (£7.5m). As we saw briefly in the Brighton friendly, he works a lot more off the ball, similar to Roberto Firmino (£9.5m).

Ruben Loftus-Cheek (£6.0m), who was playing as a no. 10, found himself in the box very often as a result of the German’s link-up play and the 4-3-3 that Lampard prefers shaped up into a 4-2-2-2 in transition. Given Havertz’ goal-scoring instincts, the prospects are mouth-watering, to say the least.

Chelsea were second only to Manchester City for expected goals last season, so creating chances was not a problem and by adding an ice-cold finisher like Havertz to their ranks, the Blues’ goal output should go up significantly this season.

With Havertz having had zero minutes with Chelsea in pre-season due to international involvement with Germany, it is perhaps unlikely that Lampard throws him into the fray straight away against Brighton, with a cameo appearance most likely. His minutes should improve as the weeks go on and he settles in, however.

In terms of injury, he has a good overall fitness record with only the muscle tear he suffered in November 2019 causing him to miss more than 15 days out with injury. He has been unavailable for just six games over the past three seasons due to injury or illness.

When that deadline goes that's it, just the one FT and you're on your way. Our constant tinkering at this point sometimes belies that reality.

Given the blank (BUR, MUN and MCI assets all appealing) and perhaps given that we'll need our transfers for chasing heavy mids fixtures, it does seem to make sense that we find as much reliable set and forget we can possibly find. Perhaps more boring, but necessary at least to start with.

Given Covid and DGWs, a later WC may be in order too.

What are the safe bets that we can hang our hat on at this point, rather than the fire in the dark punts?

Yes, agreed. May result in fewer funds up top, but the trade off is that you can focus your transfers on these slots, particularly on captaincy

        Look at this combo:

        McCarthy

        TAA - VVD - Robbo - Laporte - Doherty

        Bruno - KDB - Soucek

        Werner - Ings

        Actually stunning to behold

This is precisely why I'm going for a 4-4-2. It is not without risk, SHU defenders. But I prefer to base the team on players with more knowns than unknowns

My biggest risk imo is Barnes. So I believe in in the right track

Forget all the unknowns. United and City are a week behind

Pick the strongest side you can now and structure it to be able to absorb whichever premium/s look great

Forget all the cheap defenders. Jumping down a 0.5 from a position of a carefully thought out structure is much less disruptive than jumping up if it's all goes wrong

That's my approach. Work with the knowns

        Absolutely crucial imo

FFS tends to be 'this player or that player' or 'these three or those three' but the constraints you can put on yourself and ultimately the costs of thinking your foundation out poorly can be every bit as costly. It's really hard to plan far ahead for which players will work out best, but much more sensible to put more time into knowns such as which formations, price points, team combinations etc are favourible to allow you to adapt.

It's the context within which every transfer has to happen and the question you should be asking yourself at least as the same time as 'which players are absolutely key. It's no different to football in that respect. Poorly put together collections of stars will get shafted by a better built team

I think that my current starting defenders should be good enough:
TAA, Dier, Saiss, Vinagre and Taylor. Dull but not too expensive and decent rotation to avoid MCI gw2 for example. Yet I woud be happy to save .5 somehow or get Doherty, but money is so tight 🙁

My previous draft had McCarthy Ings and Adams, so no KWP because of that. But yes, he has potential. Doherty at 6.0 is interesting but players like Haverz are difficult transfer in with him. That million less with him gives me headache in the attack with many future scenarios.

Was looking at this and watchlisting him this moment mitro or ayew is a better option than him as mitro or ayew are focal points of attack or proven pl experience. Rodrigo had a bit part at Bolton to his name so really untested.

Leeds will be looking elsewhere such as hernandez and Harrison for their assists imo but spread around evenly.

For at least a year now, he doesnt stand out amongst the other premium options, so you can cover captaincy with Auba, KdB, Mane or Bruno just fine. He would be essential if form + fixtures were in favour (making him the prime captaincy option) but as neither are there are plenty of ways you can set up your team just fine, if not better, without him.

Versatility along cb and in front of cb is likely to give him more playing time.

Davies will have to give way to different systems if mourinho wants 3 along back line and push the likes of aurier forward with hojberg and Doherty not to mention alderweireld in the mix..

As a spurs fan i think Davies is probably more nailed than Dier as he is our only established left back and he can drop central too when Aurier/Doc get forward. No one else can play that role.

If Jose goes 3 at the back which is unlikely but has more weight now he signed Doc who is a wingback and never been a RB , It may be an opportunity for Davies to get forward more too. Unlikely like i say but an option

Only thing that puts me off Davies is the yellow card threat. I genuinely think Dier will start but he does have bad games and Jose could easily drop him

      Downgrade Soyuncu to Justin.

Not keen on double Saint defence. KWP to Dier and Doherty to Digne (Doherty will score fewer goals)

Like Mane over Salah. Prefer Armstrong to Saka & ASM.

Would defo want some more funds spent up top. Get a premium or Adams/Mitro.

    McCarthy
    Trent | Dier | Vinagre
    Auba | Zaha | Pereira | Armstrong

It's a bad idea to do a one week punt, period. Very hard to predict a player scoring in a particular GW. Just start with Martial instead.

That's how i finished top 5k last season, short but risky punts. It's free. Why not go for it? If he gets a brace I'm off to flyer

It is 4 points. Especially early on in the season.

You can roll the transfer and have 2 in GW3. You can use it on a stop gap emergency transfer. There is no situation except if you WC in GW2 where the transfer isn't worth 4 points.

That’s exactly what you’re throwing away in GW1

You’re benching a player, a player that may get injured, may get Covid, in order to save a transfer and losing opportunity points in doing so

Conversely in the other scenario if things on wrong in GW2 you can play the cheap defender then without taking a hit

Your argument is save the precious FT in case you need at the expense of opportunity points

Have you considered downgrading him and upgrading Digne to VVD? Then you could start him and have Martial over Ings? Up to you of course, but I'm like the others not liking the Ings one week punt.

That's not the comparison. The comparison is:

              Justin +4 points vs Ings

It can work out to get Ings for sure, but the odds are against it working out for a single gameweek.

The odds are in favour of that one working out in a single gameweek. Any attacking involvement and the baps will make it favourable. More than 50% likely

It’s not Justin + 4 because the transfer is free

In real terms he only makes 1 free transfer gw1

So it’s Justin vs ings - I know where my money is at

                  Exactly!!!!

                  Plus a -4 isn't actually a -4.

because a -4 has to involve two or 3 moves. This means that -2 per move at maximum

You are losing a transfer though, which you would have used elsewhere. So it could cost you much more if it means you missing out on a player that scores well thereafter.

You could say that, it’s a risk price, maybe you need it but then that move can have an upside and if you’ve structure right and a premium gets injured how is benching that premium any different then to benching from the off - it’s ludicrous to not chase points with an opportunity

Getting that premium out for one week and then back costs 2 transfers. In that case the cost is double compared to this situation.

No, it's a reasonable plan. Just that I'd be open to not doing it too based on how Ings looks in GW1 because he's usually class. Martial is my GW2 target too, but we're picking him blind with no idea of his form tbh. I guess it depends on how Palace do in GW1 as well for me. If they're whipping boys, he's in.

I'm under the impression that teams in the Europa league always start the season badly due to Thursday night games dotted across Europe.
Does anyone know if there are numbers to back this up?
When FPL first started up, before fixtures were released, no one was going near Tottenham players because of this but now it seems like they are expected to be win 3-0 every week.
They do have good fixtures but surely the Europe curse will still strike?

I've had the same problem with a third mid, think I'm going cheaper and upgrading defenders but I could really do with knowing the Wolves back line.
I'm going to own Salah for the first 7 games as I'll captain him when he's at home for those ones, then he's gone until after Christmas... If I stick to my loose plan.

Vinagre starts imo - this cheap incoming player won’t have trained with them and is old (probable backup) - 1 is enough anyhow until gw4

Salah - really, I don’t like the fixtures at all but maybe I’m convincing myself as such since there is so much value to be had when the city and Utd players become available

Is Oskar Buur being overlooked as the 4.0 defender option? The “Deputy wing-backs must step up for Wolves” article on the official FPL app suggests he’s likely to start until Wolves sign a replacement for Doc. Think I’ll stick with Mitchell, but curious to know if others think Buur could be a better bet

Heard a Wolves fan mention him the other day

I'd be very surprised if he played. Would expect it to be Traore for now and them to sign someone as well before the window closes

Starting to think I should just stretch the 5.5 mid to Foden

How are you going to stretch? I am thinking the same.

Sacrificing elsewhere but I feel he will outscore the 6.5 fwds and possibly the defenders if he plays regularly. If he is being rotated too much it’s an easy switch down.

I have JWP at the mo and the plan was to stretch to Grealish GW6. Foden is an interesting alternative though to start with.

On the comparison tool for the last 6 GWs JWP edges Foden though, what do you make of that?

I don't love having to play Riedewald, so Castagne might end up becoming Justin for me to be able to afford ASM. But Jairo did play the 90 yesterday...

    McCarthy
    Castagne - Dier - TAA - Tierney
    Auba - Son - Ziyech - Riedewald
    Werner - Mitro

    Steer, Brewster, Mitchell, Bruno

Can't understand stand why the streamers, top players or scouts are not going without Salah, makes no sense to me even though I am going Salah.
