The best strikers to buy, sell and hold based on FPL goal threat from open play

With so many goals already this season, it’s all about strikers in Fantasy Premier League – but which ones should we sell, keep or buy?

We have already witnessed 103 goals over the first 28 matches of the campaign, an average of 3.68 per game. To put that into perspective, the previous Premier League record across the course of a full season was an average of 2.82 goals per game.

With nets bulging up and down the country, it is natural to assume that the bulk of the goals will be scored by strikers and, with the new handball regulations leading to more penalties being awarded, it is only natural to favour front-men on spot kick duties.

The FPL Eye Test - Gameweek 3 3

For example, the following forwards take penalties for their respective clubs:

  1. Neal Maupay (£6.5m) – Brighton
  2. Chris Wood (£6.5m) – Burnley
  3. Richarlison (£8.0m) – Everton
  4. Aleksandar Mitrovic (£6.0m) – Fulham
  5. Jamie Vardy (£10.0m) – Leicester City
  6. Callum Wilson (£6.4m) – Newcastle
  7. Danny Ings (£8.4m) – Southampton
  8. Harry Kane (£10.5m) – Spurs
  9. Charlie Austin/Hal Robson-Kanu (£5.4m) – West Brom
  10. Michail Antonio (£6.4m) – West Ham
  11. Raul Jimenez (£8.6m) – Wolves

CHECK OUT THE FULL PENALTY TAKERS LIST HERE

That’s a pretty large share out of the 20 teams. So, while 3-5-2 has been gaining popularity over the last few years, the number of penalty takers available at budget prices in forward positions may very well help cement the classic 3-4-3 as the preferred formation.

But do we want to be investing in strikers who rely exclusively on penalties? While there could be merit in that approach, surely we want to investing those who offer plenty of threat from open play as well.

So, let’s have a look how the league’s strikers have done so far using the Fantasy Football Scout Premium Members Area.

Players at LW love returning against Ward, happened after lockdown so take it with a pinch of salt. Hopefully Digne winning that penalty is a sign of things to come this week!

Morning dzzz, super confused on what to do here with 1ft and 0.2m. My primary goal is to get Salah by latest gw6

    Martinez
Taa James Saiss -- Lamptey (eve) Mitchell (che)
Foden KDB Havertz Son -- Burke
    Jimmy DCL Werner

A: Son >> Barnes. Will need to be a long term transfer as i can then focus on converting havertz(or foden) + Werner >> Salah + 6m fwd

B: Son + Werner >> Salah + 6.5m forward (-4). Solves the salah headache immediately but Werner has two good fixtures (but lots of potential price drops). Also, all the cheap striker options have tough fixtures

C: Save FT and hope son plays. back up defenders don't have great fixtures

D: Something else? Son + Havertz >> Sterling + Podence?

    1. Bobby Digital

      A

I don't know why people aren't holding son. He will be back for the fixtures you want him for as utd away was most likely a blank anyways.

You should get rid of havertz and werner to vardy and Barnes imo

      1. Juza
        • 7 Years

In my case because if I bench Son I have a choice among Brewster Podence Mitchell to play, not very inspiring...So I sold Son for Barnes who is in form and with the money saved I replaced Brewster with DCL

I think Barnes + DCL (-4) will outscore Son + Brewster in the next 5/6 weeks

oh fair enough yeah really good subs they definitely will.

ive taken an 8 point hit this week moving bruno martial and soucek to barnes vardy and foden.

wondering now whether to take an extra 4 moving son to mahrez.

ive got 1.9mil in the bank so if i wait a week i could jump on someone like kdb or sterling. just trying to workout if mahrez will score more than 4-8 points this week otherwise im playing taylor and making no more transfers

Looking to target Sheff Utd attack by getting an Arsenal defender for one week only...question is which one? Tierney to exploit the left side?...Holding as a cheap option (but played 120 mins last night)?

Sheff Utd is not that bad, they have looked good in long periods, and they should have scored in all matches.

Holding only played 90min, and could have scored.
      Would go Bellerin if any.

Is anyone considering Adama Traore? Hasn’t had the best of starts but with the next 4 fixtures and at potentially 6.4 tomorrow, could be worth a punt? Would love Jimi but dont fancy taking out Werner or taking a hit

Definitely not. Hes a massive rotation risk was the first wolves player subbed against west ham and you have both podence and neto at a whole 1 mil cheaper. He's at a similar price point to Barnes foden dcl and zaha who all look much better options. I've personally gone with neto who looked the best wolves player against west ham by some way and could be a tasty differential at home to a porous Fulham defence

I don't get the logic behind "a hit is only worth it if you captain the player you just got". Surely you have to look further ahead than the next gameweek when assessing if the hit is worth taking or not.

    1. Brosstan
      • 9 Years
      3 years, 6 months ago

He problem is that people who take hits mostly don't have the ability to think far ahead or they wouldn't be in the position to take those hits in the first place

Yepp, good transfer assuming Lamptey stays in PL. Ideally wait until international transfer window closes on the 5th.

Probably price rise for Lamptey and price fall for Bavies tonight. Boring 0.2 cash variance, but would probably wait and see.

Save and have 2 frees over IB. Werner has not sone as yet but IF he hauls this week everyone will be chasing to get him back, especially with return of Pulisic immenant.

    Hey all..

    My dilemma ahead of GW4

    Keep Son and save transfer
    (Lamptey 1st Sub)
    Or
Son to 6.9 max (To fund TAA GW5/6)
    A - Torres
    B - Foden
    C - Trossard

    Thanks
