Can FPL managers trust Crystal Palace defenders with appealing fixtures?

Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers have long been able to turn to Crystal Palace’s defensive assets for cheap returns.

The Eagles, marshalled by veteran Roy Hodgson, have hit double-figures for clean sheets in the last two seasons, and also carried set piece potential.

But this season, the well appeared to have run dry, with Palace only recording three clean sheets thus far.

More worryingly, the Selhurst Park outfit were also on the end of two Christmas stuffings, losing 7-0 to Liverpool and being outplayed by 10 men in their 3-0 defeat to Aston Villa.

But since the Villa defeat, Palace’s defence has shown signs of recovery, with encouraging performances against Leicester and Arsenal.

We are taking a deep dive into the stats to see if Palace can once again be relied upon for cheap defensive returns.

Cancelo will play, probably Mendy as well, Rodri will come for Fernandinho and Foden for Bilva. Its possible that Ferran Torres plays for Jesus as well. And thats it.

Looking at Man Utd's squad what do you the main area that's holding them back is?

I know a lot has been said about the defence and rightly so, but my feeling is that Martial and - whispering it - Rashford just aren't good enough for a title winning side.

They need a quality defensive midfielder who can break up the play like Fabinho, Kante, Ndidi, etc. A centre half to partner Maguire and a natural right winger like Sancho. Realistically though there not getting all 3

The play breaks down at martial a lot, he’s a reasonable with the ball at his feet running at players but he lacks class in his passing and finishing, I think they need a top striker with Rashford/Bruno behind

A mistake in hindsight, but I thought Bamford has a higher ceiling (even with one game). Remember his hat trick? I predicted a Justin 2 pointer and 1 pointer based on last several home games...

That Brighton fooled many, especially players who BBed this GW with Dallas, Bam, Raph and Adams. Oof I would've never predicted Justin getting a 3p in a DGW.

It's not just a mistake in hindsight. Points prediction algorithms aren't an exact science but they are a very good indicator of what to expect given that they factor in bookies odds when calculating them. Justin was predicted to average around 7-7.5 points iirc and Bamfords would have been around 5 up to maybe 6 at most.

Therefore it was clearly correct to play Justin over Bamford had you known this.

Yes, they are rested or rotated usually too often, been there, lesson learned. And nothing(?) was more annoying than having a defender rotated in easy games when probability of pts and cs was high.

Cancelo is City’s best option at Right and Left Back aswell as being able to play in midfield. Been arguably their best, most consistent performer this year. Has been extremely unlucky to not to already have 4/5 assists and City look like they’re never going to concede

        1. Deulofail

Cancelo is a better LB than Zinchenko - who's only been playing because Cancelo has been at RB instead. Walker is out of favour atm but got given the game against Palace to give Cancelo a rest. Either Zinchenko or Walker will lose their place so that Cancelo comes back in against Villa

His XA is 3.3 season to date

      Whatever that means

Super potential though, ridiculous value for 5.5

Stones 5.0, Dias 5.5, Cancelo 5.5 - They really really got caught by suprise with City's defenders this year

Being in a pool of 4 fullbacks with Pep at he helm is a bit of a pain though

      1. Deulofail
        • 8 Years
        3 years, 2 months ago

That would be the reason for their price, then? Not forgetting that value is relative: Cancelo isn't excellent value if he takes the slot of the highest scoring player in the game, for example (hypothetically). Only 3 City slots available, and their attack was expected to be potent, so no need to risk overpricing the defenders.

I think there's a bit of truth in Jonalidinho's point in that watching Cancelo all season he's been unlucky (probably very unlucky) not to have done more damage... moreso than Stones or Dias

But the whole Guardiola fullback schtick is always fraught with danger, especially when all 4 are fit

His value proposition is founded on clean sheets & baps first & foremost, he was way too cheap at 5.5, as are the other two lads

Woah, unlike you to be missing out on triple clean sheet points that are there for the taking. Remember those Liverpool clean sheets last season?

It would have been unbelievably lucrative for the last couple of months allright 🙂 Just needed Kev for captaincy for that fixture run...

No chance, look at his history of goals and assists. Also I still don't think he's nailed over walker and zinc/Mendy

Play Robbo. You paid 7M for the attacking threat. Cleansheet is just the cherry on the cake.

1-0 (Coufal asisting an own goal or scoring a non-assisted goal)
1-1 (Kante and Albrighton asisted by Rudiger and Perez)

Yes, I only have Coufal tonight and already took my place behind the sofa

2-0 - with points for Soucek and Coufal
1-1 - Schmeichel penalty save and James screamer

Would I be crazy to go Robbo > Shaw to free up some cash for future moves.

I think GW23 looks an important one. LIV Vs MCI could be low scoring and LEE and SOU could have a double. I'd also want to try shoehorn in Kane for that week too.

Chances OGS gives Fernandes a rest in an easy-ish game? Avoids that 5th yellow?

Not quite now - only after a club's 19th league game does the threshold raise to 10 bookings. So Fernandes still has to get through the Fulham game.

exactly - only way that Bruno is rested to avoid that 5th yellow is 80+ mins and game clearly won

Phew can't say I'm not delighted to see El Ghazi trained even if he doesn't play both games, still wondering why I put Alioski first on my bench when I was trying to fit Holding into my team for this week
