As Didier Drogba’s penalty hit the back of the net to clinch the Champions League trophy for Chelsea, Ron Gourlay was already thinking of the money. Not long after the celebrations had died down, the Blues chief executive revealed the Allianz Arena triumph could be worth “hundreds of millions” and, hinting at the club’s intentions in this summer’s transfer market, went on to say:

Winning it and qualifying to play in it next season does help us attract players. It does help with the negotiations and what you’ve got to offer. Every season we have brought three or four players in and that will continue.

Yesterday brought confirmation that Chelsea mean business. Far from resting on their laurels, the London outfit have beaten the two Manchester clubs to the punch by snapping up Eden Hazard from French outfit Lille in a deal rumoured to be in the region of £32m.

There’s little doubt the transfer is a huge coup – Hazard is one of the most highly-regarded young stars in world football and should light up the Premier League upon his arrival next season. Having passed a medical and agreed personal terms on a five-year contract at Stamford Bridge, the 21 year old – who is now the fourth Belgian on the Blues’ books – went on to declare:

I’m delighted to finally arrive here, it’s a wonderful club and I can’t wait to get started. It’s true that initially there were a number of clubs in for me..Ultimately, for a player it’s all about winning things; I want to win as many trophies as possible, which is another reason why I came here as Chelsea have been winning things for a long time now, and I hope to win many more during my time here.

The Statistics

A prodigious talent, Hazard was snapped up by hometown club Royal Stade Brainois at just four years of age. Eight years later, he moved to Belgian club Tubize, where he was first spotted by Lille scouts and subsequently offered a youth contract. Hazard joined the Ligue 1 outfit in 2005 before penning his first professional contract a couple of years later, though it wasn’t until the 2008-09 season that he finally nailed down a regular starting role.

Over the past four seasons in the Lille first XI, Hazard’s attacking returns steadily improved, with his on-pitch performances thoroughly justifying the praise lavished upon his undoubted talents. While his first campaign produced just four goals and an assist in 30 appearances, the young Belgian stepped up the following year, with five goals and eight assists in 37 games.

The following season, Hazard’s seven goals and 10 assists helped Rudi Garcia’s side to the Ligue 1 title, while last term he was simply sensational, providing 20 goals and 15 assists in an outstanding campaign. In total, he has played 192 games in all competitions for Lille, scoring 50 goals and providing 38 assists – as the above stats show, though, Chelsea are clearly getting a player approaching peak form.

Hazard also picked up plenty of personal awards during his time in France – he was Young Player of the Year in the 2008-09 and 2009-10 campaigns before picking up the Player of the Year award for the past couple of season running.

The Prospects

Given the level of outlay, it’s obvious that Hazard will be a key player in Chelsea’s bid for further glory next term. The player himself admitted that playing time was a significant factor in his decision to reject both United and City, going on to say:

The final choice depends on the game time I will have and the position where I will be aligned.

Hazard is more used to a 4-3-3 system at Lille – primarily right-footed, he was mainly fielded on the left flank as an inverted winger, with his ability to cut inside onto his stronger foot a feature of his play. Bearing in mind the Blues don’t even have a permanent manager yet, it’s difficult to ascertain exactly where Hazard will feature – while his adaptability means he can play in any of the attacking midfield slots, it’s rumoured his preferred choice is through the middle.

Fernando Torres’ recent revelation that he has been assured more of a prominent role next season by Roman Abramovich perhaps suggests the Blues will maintain their 4-2-3-1 shape, with Hazard and Juan Mata undoubtedly two of the three behind Torres. The capture of Marko Marin from Werder Bremen offers further indication of the club’s intentions to move away from a more physical approach and place their faith in diminutive, ball-playing creators, but Marin is far from the type of marquee signing Abramovich seems to salivate over – reports of a move for long-term target Hulk from FC Porto are gaining momentum as the club look to overhaul their frontline options.

At the moment, then, the only certainty is that Hazard will get game time, and plenty of it. From a Fantasy Premier League (FPL) perspective, he’s likely to come in around the 9.5 mark – the same price tag Mata was handed in his debut campaign last time round. What will be crucial, though, is his classification; former team mate Gervinho (who also played in the Lille front three) was labelled as a forward by FPL last season upon his arrival at Arsenal – will Hazard be looked upon similarly? At present, only Torres, Daniel Sturridge and Romelu Lukaku are our up front Fantasy options, though you get the feeling that Abramovich is far from finished his summer shopping.

While Hazard’s acquisition will hand Fantasy managers a selection headache as they assess the Blues attacking options, there seems little doubt he has the potential to provide us with an explosive Fantasy option for the season ahead, as the Champions League winners look to improve upon last season’s paltry sixth place finish.

lol Belgian waffle. Since he's a renowned CAM it still puzzles me how United didn't make any apparent move for him.

Make for quite a tasty Chelsea midfield three if they keep playing 4-2-3-1.

I'm not going to say I know loads about the Bundesliga but I've seen a fair few games, read a lot of reports and seen the stats.

I'm not saying Kagawa isn't and won't be an excellent player, far from it but he's only really played 1 year of top level regular football.

Hazard on the hand has played a lot more football and has a better record last season.

On the fantasy aspect, I suspect Hazard will get a lot more gametime than Kagawa, at least early on, Fergie won't rush him in too much and Man U have lots of options attacking wise.

Yes, I agree with you on the fantasy wise aspect, however, Hazard himself has had only 1 great season whereas Kagawa has played his last two seasons very well, infact he was a revelation in the 10/11 season for Dortmund, before an injury cut him short. Hazard has in fact played less games overall than Kagawa, he does have a better record but he was in a worse league.

Lots of Kagawa's games were in the Japanese 2nd division, while I don't know anything about that league, I highly doubt it's anywhere near Ligue 1.

Not sure there's much difference between the Bundesliga and Ligue 1 personally except for the fact that the Bayerns/Dortmunds etc. are better than the best French sides.

And Kagawa played for the title winners whereas Hazard played for a Lille side that just lost Cabaye, Rami, Gervinho etc, the backbone of their side.

Depends really, Hazard is excititng a prospect as Kagawa, both are young, both are talented, Kagawa has played in the better league so he might adapt faster to the PL, but without seeing them in action up close it's foolhardy to say which player is the better one. Both are great signings for the PL no doubt in that.

    FFS Friendly World Cup Previews

    Group A

Uruguay - Brendan Ferguson? FFS (Empeikal and 4Vets)

This duo is strangely seeded 1st in Group A and so will surely feel confident as they enter the tournament as favourites to advance. However, recent history has shown that can often count for very little. Nonetheless these 2 FFS regulars could easily be a force to be reckoned with, provided Vets can overcome his age related issues and remember to change his team every day 😛 This pair should not be underestimated and will enter the competition feeling confident. The Uruguayans will rely on wood, hands and buck-teeth to see them through, though they may wish to stay away from the racism.

    Prediction - Runners Up

    Switzerland - Ozil's Ceching In (James_Fitz and JKisthe1)

This duo offers much promise as a Swirish team. Unlucky not to gain entry in the main Euro competition this pair will fancy their chances. JK placed inside the top 4k in this seasons FPL whilst James-Fitz took some valuable lessons away from his first season. A team already working like clock-work JFK head into the tournament on a high. The Swiss are notoriously hard to break down and have recently found a scoring touch. This bodes well for the tournament.

    Prediction - Group Winners

Slovenia - Baltic Curry (Aatish and Kostja)

Another team of FFS favourites this combo has been desperately unlucky to have been given this draw. Though they start as 3rd favourites their abilities should not be written off and they are very capable of producing a shock or 2. A rather apt team name for their draw, their group rivals will be hoping this duo don't spice things up in Group A, but if they get firing it could get hot for the other teams.

Prediction - A narrow margin in 3rd place.

Egypt - El Nino's Rulers (Huth Your Daddy and ILA)

I confess to having no idea who these 2 are, and part of me suspects they only made it in, due to their team name being a blatant act of brown nosing towards a committee member :P. That being said, there is something to be said for the unknown quantity. When the rest of your opponents don't know how you think it gives an advantage that can sometimes be crucial. That being said, this pair remain the group's rank outsiders and it will take a sea parting of biblical proportions (with no Moses to help) to get this team through to the knock-out stages. It's like they are the Denmark of Group A.

    Prediction - 4th Place.

    Really interesting read.

    http://www.zonalmarking.net/2012/06/05/euro-2012-preview-russia/

The big benefactor is likely to be Dzagoev who might push forward into the CF role when Kerzakhov drifts wide.

I would get him, but the driving runs of Shirokov and the fact that Russia aren't likely to score too many goals means I can hold off for now.

Actually, official sportswear sells for a premium here in asia, roughly equivalent to around 38 pounds for a shirt here in India , doubtless it'll be more expensive in Japan, giving the fact that the PCI of an average Japanese > PCI of an average Indian

Saw a bit of him when watching one of those "goals and skills" compilations on youtube for Gotze. Ended up looking up Kagawa's... yep, he looks like the real deal.

I'm just very interested in how he will fit into the United system. Seems to me to be one of those versatile attacking midfielders who can play centrally or out wide. I actually think the signing of this type of player will push United towards adopting 4-2-3-1 permanently. Him as CAM flanked by Nani and Valencia with Rooney up top.

For some reason my ideal transfers always level me on 0.0 in the bank, so knowing which players will increase in price allows me to time my transfers. Nothing worse then putting a player in early and having him injured or waiting too long and nolonger being able to afford him.

There won't be long enough in the game to reap any benefits from price rises. Your team would have to rise in price by 1m just to gain 0.5m and I doubt that'll happen.
