FPL tools: Tips on how to use our ‘flat-track bully’ feature for transfers and captains

There is a vast array of tools available in Fantasy Football Scout’s Premium Members Area that can help Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers with their planning ahead of the new season.

In a series of articles to be published ahead of Gameweek 1, we’ll be guiding you through a selection of our most-used features and some of the less well-known.

Having looked at the ‘per 90’ search filter last week, today we provide tips on how managers can best make use of the ‘flat-track bully’ feature.

Why do FPL managers love a flat-track bully?

A flat-track bully is a term for a player who does particularly well against weaker opposition.

As FPL managers, identifying these players and combining this knowledge with the Season Ticker, helps us to plan our captaincy and transfers.

Stick to the premium players playing against bottom-half teams as much as possible.

– Lateriser, FPL Masterclass

Consider the three most popular captain choices in FPL last season: Mohamed Salah (£12.5m), Bruno Fernandes (£12.0m) and Harry Kane (£12.5m), who were the top armband picks in 31 of the 38 Gameweeks.

Between them the trio have produced 100 double-digit hauls since the start of the 2015/16 season, with 89 of those coming against teams outside the so-called ‘big six’ of Liverpool, Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal and the two Manchester clubs.

If we exclude Arsenal, who finished eighth last term, that total rises to 94.

But it’s not only members of the ‘big six’ who perform well against the rest of the league.

Away from the headline acts, a selection of players have developed a talent for putting the lesser lights to the sword – and this is where the flat-track bully feature comes into its own.

How to identify the flat-track bullies?

Fantasy Football Scout subscribers can filter statistics by opposition.

To begin, select either the Player Stats or Comparison Tools sections from the Members’ Home menu.

Among the options at the top of Player Stats, a ‘Versus’ dropdown menu is located next to the ‘Filter’ button.

FPL tools: tips on how to use the flat-track bully feature 15

Click on the dropdown menu to bring up a list of the 20 Premier League teams for each season.

You can now customise your selection by checking or unchecking individual opponents. The ‘big six’, called the ‘top6’ in the dropdown menu, are grouped together and can be unselected with one click.

Looking at the ‘Fantasy Stats’ for ‘All Players’ last season reveals how well Kane, Salah, and Bruno Fernandes did when facing the Premier League also-rans, combining for a total of 52 goals.

However, beyond the premium-priced players, a more budget-friendly group emerge.

Patrick Bamford (£8.0m) netted 14 of his 17 strikes against non-big six sides, while Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£8.0m) nearly kept pace with 13 of his 16 goals coming against teams in the lower echelons of the table.

Kelechi Iheanacho (£7.5m), Callum Wilson (£7.5m) and Chris Wood (£7.0m) showed an even greater propensity for scoring against weaker opposition: they breached a big six defence just once each, compared to 11 times against the rest. That’s 91 per cent of their goals.

Wilson, whose flat-track bully status is well-known, has also tended to start quickly.

At Newcastle last season and Bournemouth in 2019/20, he took advantage of a kind opening schedule to score six and five goals respectively in his first seven matches.

This year he again faces just one big six side before Gameweek 8.

A mixed start for Burnley and Olympic Games involvement has kept Wood’s ownership below three per cent for now, but the New Zealander could become a popular transfer when the fixtures turn in Gameweek 9.

Wood produced a similar flat-track-bully record in 2019/20, bagging 12 of his 14 goals against easier opposition.

Combining per 90 and the flat-track bully feature

Cheaper alternatives to Vardy and Antonio among the GW35+ FPL differentials

In addition to using the flat-track bully feature with the Season Ticker, applying the per 90 filter alongside it can be revealing.

Last term, injuries to teammates helped Kelechi Iheanacho earn a spot in Brendan Rodgers’ starting XI from Gameweek 26.

And the Nigerian seized his opportunity with both hands, netting 11 times before the end of the campaign. Ten of those goals coming in the eight matches he played against teams outside the big six.

A relatively attractive run of fixtures from Gameweek 1, featuring just Manchester City from the ‘big six’, could see him carry that form into 2021/22.

Given that Iheanacho should keep his place in a front two for Leicester, using a per 90 filter allows us to compare him with regular starters.

Impressively, when excluding the two Manchester clubs, Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal and Spurs, Iheanacho’s goalscoring rate improves from 0.70 goals per 90 minutes played – already the best average among FPL forwards in 2020/21 – to 0.88 goals per 90.

Subscribers can then compare this average with his expected goals per 90, to give them an idea of how sustainable his points returns are.

The answer, with a +0.32 overperformance per 90, is they probably aren’t. At least not to the same extent: his xG per 90 of 0.56 is still joint-third best among strikers.

A reminder that expected goals does not factor in who takes the shot, and it clearly makes a difference if Harry Kane or Oliver Burke is on the end of a shooting chance.

Kane overperformed his per 90 xG by just +0.07 last season, which feels a far more sustainable rate for a player of this quality.

Fantasy managers might want to find an extra £0.5m to upgrade Iheanacho to Calvert-Lewin. The Everton centre-forward produced an impressive 0.61 xG per 90 against teams outside the big six. Last year he underperformed that average by -0.06 per 90.

The Toffees don’t face any of the big six in their first six games.

The choice is yours

Perhaps you are reading this thinking that Leicester City should be included among the elite clubs, or maybe you’d rather use squad value as a measure of team strength.

As a Premium Member, you can tinker to your heart’s content.

And, mentioned briefly above, you can also make use of the ‘Versus’ filter in our head-to-head comparison tool:

FPL tools: tips on how to use the flat-track bully feature 16

Once the season gets underway and we are limited to one transfer per Gameweek, the comparison tool can help us reach a decision between two players. The ‘Versus’ filter allows us to paint a more nuanced picture.

How many fixtures are you looking at when selecting your GW1 team?

I always get off to a slow start by selecting mostly players who I want to keep long term, combined with the fact I'm a rubbish FPL manager.

I never want to be set-up for an early WC by avoiding some players from say, the likes of Leeds and Chelsea as their fixtures improve around GW 5.

Are you purposely selecting players you wouldn't want to keep long term? Do you have a (tentative) first WC time period in mind based on fixture swings or international break?

I think I try to see where the fixtures of the premiums take a turn and plan my WC to be for then. Obviously, that can change, 'the best laid plans' and all that, but it doesn give me a perspective on when I may have to use 2 FT or 2FT+hit to 'rejig' my team. Hence, I think that fixture turn is GW6-7, where United and Liverpool fixtures go a bit sour, while conversely Chelsea and City fixtures turn pretty good. Hence, I think this season the first 6/7 games are a good 'block' of fixtures to plan our players on, see who performs best in that block, and pick players from those teams.

      9-10 GWs.

I like to split the season into 4 periods.

GW 1-9/10 (First WC being your initial team selection)
GW 10 - 19 (Use of actual first WC to set up team for the second quarter)
GW 20 - 29 (Hit season to manoeuvre for the form and fixtures)
GW 30 - 38 (Chip season to use your second WC and chips for the DGWs)

The art of playing a late first WC is something that's not heavily explored in the FPL content world. There are a few elite managers who usually do so, but almost no content explaining how they pull it off. Just going off what I observed last year, Fabio, Mark, and Tom Freeman are some who did so successfully. This season, there appears to be less reason to wait because there probably won't be a big DGW as early as January.

One key, which Mark alluded to again in this week's BlackBox, is having a strong enough bench so that you don't have to spend transfers removing players with short-term injuries. Having a flexible team structure helps as well. Planning ahead on captaincy so you are not unexpectedly having to scramble to get a captain choice in also helps.

Before chips, FFS and group think, the wildcard for me, was just a get out of jail card, to fix any issues that a couple of tranfers couldn't deal with and to hope that something like an unexpected blank or double would crop up that using a WC would give you a chance to gain rank. there's so much pressure to use a WC on one of the first fixture swings now, or the first international break, but everyone ends up with the same WC team and it loses it's advantage. I think there's something to be said for just saving it for a future hiccup, plan ahead with intending to use it.

I suppose I never plan for a first WC (I don't think anyone should, honestly) but maybe I get caught out the first few GW's owning players with good fixture swings in, for example, GW's 5/6/7/8, meanwhile managers are transferring these players in with early WC's after playing the fixtures with other players at the start.

It still feels like such a lottery at the beginning of the season with so many managers playing. I will say that the beginning of the season tends to favor attackers in the mid-price range (6.5-7.5) as opposed to premium defenders typically. Premium defenders show their value over the medium term (5/6+ GW's of steady returns) whereas FPL managers who roll the dice with three mid-price forwards or 3 mid-price mids can jump out to a hot start early, by landing 2-3 hauls.

Seems to happen every season with the likes of say Mitrovoic, Pukki, C. Wilson, Bamford propelling managers to great early ranks while I'm waiting for the slow drip of CS's and potential attacking returns from premium defenders.

Being more specific, it seems fairly commonplace early season to see something like:

              (over first 3 fixtures)

              Mid-price attacker (2 points, 2 points, goal + 3 baps) = 13 points
Premium defender (2 points, 1 point, CS) = 9 points

If you hit the favourable attacker over the course of the first 3, you're multiplying that 4 point difference by 2 or 3. And honestly, if memory serves, it seems like braces for strikers are fairly common early doors, as opposed to only the one goal.

It seems like there was only that one season (3 seasons ago, possibly?) that premium defenders really got off to a strong start with consistent CS's for the top six.

I think part of the lack of early CS is that there are always one or two promoted teams that come up and try to play attractive football. Then by November, they're in the relegation zone and their manager gets sacked and replaced by Big Sam or something. Or at least decides to play much more defensively to enhance chances of staying up. Then at that point, that team becomes a prime CS victim.

Last year I was burned by playing a very early wildcard and selecting bandwagons like Foden who later turned out to be unreliable.

This year I’m just picking a solid squad of proven, first choice picks in order to give me some breathing space. Pencilled in wildcard for early autumn when things have settled down and the value picks who are sustainable - at least in terms of being nailed - have emerged.

hmm I see the logic but if WCing early (say between GW's 5-7) there's not enough current season data to go by to make selections. Similar to last year, when many brought in wolves assets after GW3. Cheers for the response. I'll look into short term (first 6 GW's) and the medium term fixtures

I never plan the first WC more than a couple of weeks in advance, unless it's a 'use it or lose it' scenario with GW 20 approaching.

If you commit yourself to an early WC, you have to be willing to go without one for another 20+ GWs, since the chips and late DGWs/BGWs pretty much compel you to hold the second WC until after GW 30. That's a long time to keep your team fresh without resorting to otherwise avoidable -4 hits. If you commit yourself to a later WC and base your transfers on it, then you're probably not being flexible or intuitive enough, and you lose out in the short run.

I'd rather treat the first WC as an insurance policy against a sudden form/injury/benching/suspension crisis than try to predict the next big game-changing shift, which is a (literally) pointless exercise most of the time without the benefit of hindsight. Going with the flow is massively underrated by overthinkers. If you think a player will explode well in the short run, then they usually have pretty good chances of doing OK in the long run too, so keeping faith in them will likely allow you to tick over through the big fixture swings and keep your 'get out of jail free' card.

I'll be holding it until an emergency, or until GW 20 if necessary, and in the meantime I'll invest in reliable/fixture proof players to keep me ticking over while I take a few punts which can be undone with FTs and the occasional hit, and take it week by week.

I almost always spend a month planning a team then wildcard in week two. I view the WC as a potentially disastrous chips and my main aim is to avoid destroying my team with it.

I normally look at the first 8 gameweeks, or a major fixture shift, whichever comes first and plan my WC around that.

A shift around GW7 has been mentioned by many on here, but GW12 or 13 actually looks much better with United, City, Spurs, Arsenal, Pool and Chelsea in the top 8 of the overall ticker looking at the following 7 gameweeks. So I think that’s what I’ll be aiming for and use my FTs (and maybe a few hits to boot) to bring in Chelsea, Arsenal and Leeds players for the shift around GW7.

That said, “aiming for” and “reality” are two different things entirely. The last 2 seasons I have started terribly (3m+ OR after GW3) and I’ve ended up pulling the WC trigger early to try and claw back the deficit. This has been successful up to a point, but for most of the remainder of the season, I’ve been playing catch-up. I don’t mind this since when you get a string of successive green arrows (which, to be fair, isn’t that hard when you’re starting from such a low base), can maintain confidence during what is undoubtedly a grind.

I’d love to get off to a solid start this time around - it would be nice to play the first WC from a position of strength for a change - and plan to do so by avoiding unproven PL assets as much as I can. But the lure of getting on the likes of Toney from the get-go (and the kudos that comes with it if it works) is always very strong. But for every Pukki, Charlie Adam and Michu there are scores of Graham Dorrans, Ebanks-Blakes and Werners.

I was expecting this NGL. West Ham, Leeds, Southampton at home in the first 3 with Villa and United away sandwiched in between. Fixtures are not really as tough as they look like. Main man on penalties. Finished the season on a high. Supposedly Willock is coming back too. Realistically expecting 3 returns in the first 5.

I usually go very cautious at the beginning of the season, valuing holding the wildcard late. In the 5 seasons I've played, I've only used it once before GW10 and I've held it till Xmas twice.

    However this season with;
3 GWs before transfer deadline day
Nice fixture swings for first 6 weeks
Good budget options at Brighton and Villa balance out with premium United and Liverpool
Uncertainty surrounding City, Chelsea, Spurs and even Arsenal line ups
Access Sanchez early fixtures but then switch to Watford double for 8.5m keeper duo with guaranteed back up

I'm fancying playing specifically to use my wildcard early. Attack the fixtures and have a fairly low budget bench which will allow easy access to early bandwagons.

Not really asking anything as I've pretty much made up my mind. Just sharing, food for thought.

    Tell me about AWB please?

5.5m last season scoring 144 pts classed as a defender (4th highest among all defenders). 5.5m this season.

He plays for a team that can generally be relied on for CS. He has improved his attacking ability. He stays fit (unlike his LB counterpart). He is nailed as Man Utd don't have a good backup (unlike his LB counterpart). He has had a proper break not being selected for England.

If Trippier comes in their will be good rotation at RB. Tripper will offer a more attacking style which will go with a counter attack nicely. AWB when they’re playing stronger sides and may need more of a defensive boost.

I also think if man utd sign Varane, utd defense may be a good clean sheet option. To me, Shaw is more nailed on in the long run if he stays fit and will offer some attacking value and could also get more clean sheets as a result of a strong CB pairing

    4. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus
      • 14 Years

AWB’s attacking returns were a statistical miracle

7 returns from 3.5 XGi was bonkers

In 500 fewer minutes, Shaw got more than double the XGi (7.2) but 1 less return (6)

One to watch this season - you’d expect big regression from AWB & potentially big progression from Shaw

      1. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus

Shaw’s minutes per XGi (402) is actually less than half of AWB’s (987)

According to Opta FPL have made an absolute howler pricing them the same and there’s just no competition between them in terms of Shaw being a far, far superior FPL asset statistically

But this is where the bolllocks-factor of statistics come in - stats ain’t real life so you never know what might happen

How come there isn't much love for Cresswell here? 11 assists and 11 CS last season. At 5.5m with kind fixtures I was expecting some interest in him.

Is Coufal being 0.5m less the sole reason?

Probably Coufal. I think Hammers will be overstretched by Europe and have a more modest season myself.

    Hey guys
Just put my team together. I am just wondering of the probability of English players being rested gameweek 1 on account of the Euros? Currently have Shaw, Grealish and Foden in my team. Some were really involved in the euros games but still all players will be joining club training later so may not start.

I can't see them getting rested. They don't really need a preseason to get fitness. Most are key players for their sides hence why they play for national team. They've had a couple of weeks to relax before returning to their teams.

    3. TheTinman
      • 8 Years
      2 years, 9 months ago

Surely there's almost 0% chance in Grealish rested.

For City didn't Jesus play in Copa, Sterling euros, KDB euros and injured, Bernardo euros, Torres euros. So who plays? Who knows. Pep roulette

Shaw, very likely to play unless injured. Their cover is not fantastic and I think with their signings Man U will be desperate for a fast start to challenge for the title

I am liking this minus the bench, but I think ESR could become Bissouma easily, leaving 1m to play with pretty quickly. Quick hit could bring in a Toney, Nacho, Wilson, or upgrade Manquillo

Norwich seems to be experimenting with a back 3 in the preseason. With their tough run coming up they could try to implement that early, which means that in addition to the stalwarts Gibson and Hanley, an extra CB slot could open up

The candidates are apparently Omobamidele(4.0m), Sorensen, maybe even Zimmerman. One to keep an eye on.

My issue is wanting 7 really solid attackers - and i'm not convinced of owning 2 new players to the PL in Buendia and Toney.

Buendia will be playing with Grealish, Toney against Arsenal who were real good defensively...just feels a little ambitious to me.

For me i'd move Son down to an 8.5ish player and Toney up to a 7.5.
OR Bruno to a 9.0 and Toney up to a 8.0

Ends up with 1 non template player.

The template is Shaw / Digne / Raphina / Fofana / Toney

This was more seeing what price points are available going with liverpool double up at the back

In an ideal world id like 5 striker spots and 2 mids. Odd this year when this time last year people felt the striker position was dying.

Seriously? If there were any 4.5 playing forward options I'd have 1 up front nearly every year.

Possibly not fit, rest after Euros, really expensive despite underwhelming last year

It's a choice between Salah, Fernandes & KdB
      can't afford all three

can get a good team of

        4.5, 4.0
        Shaw, James, 3x 4.5
        Salah, Bruno, KDB, Raphinha, ESR
        7.5, Toney, 4.5

It's those three plus TAA that gets tough.

I really don't understand the logic - ' he's good value at this price so picking him in GW1' - see this for a lot of Leeds assets.
If you think they are underpriced, they will still be around a similar price 4-5 Gameweeks later, when the fixtures would be good too?
How does their lesser price justify their bad fixtures?
We can change our entire starting 11 in 11 Gameweeks just via FTs, we need not focus on long term value of a player.

      interesting point.
i've seen plenty benching Raphinha for example.

the reality all we have to go on is price and fixtures right now - so people are choosing based on one or the other.
(and anchored quality from last year).

Exactly! I don't get it either. Completely agree that Raphinha is underpriced and Harrison looks like great value. That doesn't mean I need them in my team for the first 4 GWs when they play United, Everton and Liverpool. We have free transfers and even a Wildcard if necessary.

Wood is at the Olympics so not sure he'll be available GW1.
