FPL Masterclass

How important is a strong substitutes’ bench early in the FPL season?

Our new FPL Masterclass series unites three of the best Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers around: two-time India champion Lateriser, seven-time top 10k finisher Zophar and five-time top 1,000 finisher Tom Freeman.

Between them they have 20 overall ranks in the top 10,000, nine of which were within the top 1k.

They’ll be chipping in with regular Fantasy advice ahead of the start of 2021/22, with opinion on everything from tips for newcomers to captaincy picks.

Our trio of top managers will also be writing for Fantasy Football Scout every week throughout the new season – and only subscribers will be able to read all of their articles in full.

FPL pre-season: Trossard hits hat-trick from wing-back role 1

Having previously provided general advice for FPL managers ahead of the upcoming campaign and discussed proven assets v Fantasy gambles, our panel now ponder: how important is having a strong bench early in the season?

ZOPHAR SAID…

The answer to this depends on how many punts you are taking and how many rotation-prone players are in your squad. The likes of Mohamed Salah (£12.5m) and Bruno Fernandes (£12.0m) are nailed-on to play every game but if you are going to go with the likes of Riyad Mahrez (£9.0m), Joao Cancelo (£6.0m) etc then you probably need some reliable back-ups.

Rotation isn’t as rife early on in the season as players are still fresh after their summer breaks and fixture congestion due to European competitions hasn’t kicked in yet.

If, like me, you go with more nailed players, then I think a bench with three £4.5m outfielders and a £4.0m goalkeeper is enough. Ideally, I would like two of them to be £4.5m defenders as you actually get some decent point potential there, much more than you would from a £4.5m midfielder.

However, there is always the temptation to go with one £4.0m defender to invest more money in attack and I think this can be done for the first few weeks until you use your first Wildcard. You really need to be confident in the minutes of the players you are picking with this strategy though.

LATERISER SAID…

I’m all for spending your pounds on the pitch and that has always been the case for me. This becomes a lot easier at the start of the season: if you are going in with players who are nailed-on, you don’t really need to worry about having a strong bench.

So the depth of your bench invariably depends on whether you are going in with assets who are susceptible to rotation. If you are opting for Manchester City midfielders or Diogo Jota (£7.5m) then I’d make sure to have to playing outfielders on my bench.

The pool of £4.5m defenders looks really strong this season which is why it shouldn’t be really difficult to have two bench players at that price who are capable of returning something as an auto-substitute. Outside of that, I’ve never spent more than £4.0m on my second goalkeeper (some of the best ‘keeper hauls come against good opposition because of the saves accumulated).

There is no European commitment for teams at the start of the season either and they are very fresh, as well, which is why they’d be less prone to rotation in my opinion. So I’d definitely go with a £4.5m defender and attacker in my squad and then you take a call for your fifth defender based on how secure the rest of your squad is and decide whether you want to spend £4.5m or £4.0m there.

TOM SAID…

At the beginning of the season, not so much. I generally like to keep it cheap as I want my money on the pitch. However, I do like to have a couple of options who can at least bag you some appearance points if needed. So, playing time is key, but anything else feels like a bonus.

As your team value builds, you can then look to beef your bench up ahead of the busy winter schedule when rotation is rife. In the last couple of seasons, I’ve spent around £17.5m of my budget on substitutes in Gameweek 1, which feels about right.

I do think it depends on which type of FPL manager you are, though.

For example, if you like making early transfers at the beginning of the week in an attempt to build team value, getting a good £5.0m option sat first on your bench, like Tomáš Souček (now £6.0m) in 2020/21, is a good idea, just in case your new signing picks up a knock in training before his first outing. A similar strategy could also be useful if you have one or two rotation risks in your starting XI, like Riyad Mahrez or Diogo Jota, or perhaps if COVID-19 is still impacting teams during the season.

With Shaw, Stones and Jota in my team atm I am starting to wonder if White, Brownhill and Obafemi is enough 🙁 Perhaps Stones or Jota or maybe even both need to go.

And I can't help myself. Building tv early is my strategy, I am not risk averse. Punishment from early transfers is usually only 0-4 pts during season, so I consider it as sound strategy (unlike Joe who used to be Jonty).

It's interesting. I'd say I'm quite a patient mgr, but not as conservative as Jonty. I'd like to add a bit more edge to my game this season. I'd certainly like to add a bit more TV in the first half of the season (something I'm not good at 🙂 without losing my playing style entirely.

What's the key here - earlier transfers to grab that 0.1 week-on- week?

As a more risk averse mgr than you (subjective), I reckon you're not adequately covering the risk in your first 11; especially in gw1 where there are a possible 2 bench risks covering 3 first 11 risks.

I read somewhere that Telles is injured and that should mean Shaw starting. Firmino has played in Copa America and I believe Jota should start against easier opponents and he has nice plum fixture. And even if he playes only 30 mins against tired legs he is capable to score. After starting to remember that Pep roulette last year I have started to wonder if Stones should be avoided.

The worst case scenario would be no show from Stones and Shaw and 1 pt camoeo from Jota. White and Brownhill would cover that. Since I have Digne already there is no easy replacement for Stones. Or actually it would be AWB, but that would mean defensive MU double up, which is not without risk.

So my choices are Stones to AWB and/or Jota to 4.5 and Obafemi to likes of Wilson or Antonio. This would mean 4-3-3 where White is 1st on my bench and 2x4.5 mids.

            I saw the Shaw/Telles injury updates - it's a wait & see

I prefer your plan A - I wasn't shooting it down; just identifying the risk for which you have alternatives - which should become clearer before the season starts.

Back to my question 😉 What's the advice on building TV for a patient/conservative mgr?

"What's the key here - earlier transfers to grab that 0.1 week-on- week?"

Yes. But the trick is to get also good players who will at least double rise and hopefully continue to rise also later. I have even taken sometimes hits to get two burning hot players. The season before I bought Sterling after his hattie and sold Kane for Pukki to get his hattie gw2 (-4). Jumping to false bandwagons ruined earlier my rookie season. So avoiding false bandwagons is extremely important also. Also trusting players that are dropping in price has always been a mistake for me. That has cost me pts later in the season and at worst even .4 tv (Pulisic I remember you).

            Cheers for the insight.

I'm basically doing what you're describing, but not soon enough and not enough. I tend to work with FT's for the first half of the season; following my transfer gameplan, but also being somewhat flexible. I'm tending to miss out on some of the on-form players with fixtures.

I found that last season I became much more adventurous (more hits) in the 2nd half of the season, due to ml challenges. I'd like to change that this season and get on a front-foot by talking more risk earlier and hopefully gaining some tv in the process.

            "Gameweek 17/18/27: Blank Gameweek
These Gameweeks are likely to be small Blank Gameweeks with one or two blank fixtures.

            Gameweek 30: Blank Gameweek
At the moment there is set to be a big Blank Gameweek in Gameweek 30. There will likely be four to seven blank fixtures in this Gameweek.

            Possible Double Gameweeks

Not a fan. There's a lot of valuable forwards at reasonable price points. Unless something substantial changes, don't see the same value in mid, all the great players are super expensive, much rather prefer the 7.5 forward lot to the 6.5 midfield lot.

My team will be ripped apart here no doubt but all selections have merits, and some are merely stop gaps until other players have fixture turns. Targetting players with proper pre seasons and fixtures

Also a number of players i feel will are under priced.

    Henderson
    TAA Cancelo Robbo James
    Salah Havertz Son Mahrez
    Toney Deeney

Yes i plan to start currently with Deeney, on pens, starting and playing 90min in pre-season. Will ship him after a few weeks when we know more or move to Pukki / Abraham etc

I like having a strong bench from the start so in addition to 2 x £4.5m defenders I have ESR in midfield.
This means that I can rotate my players based on fixtures and make early transfers without worrying about training injuries or covid impacting my starting 11.
There is also potential for all of my squad to increase in value.

I doubt it was your keeper's fault. Having two keepers is usually difficult, as against better teams they can get save points, thereby making rotation difficult. Choose a keeper that is a nailed starter, and spend the money further up the pitch

First time member on here so would appreciate some feedback. One of the few I guys that plan to stay away from TAA and Robbo all season.
Plan is to change Digne for Maquire for GW2 and slowly get rid of Villa players from GW4 and get inn Raphina. Will also go from Dunk to a 4.5 after a fe2 games so that I can change Watkins for Bamford if must. Really keen on Greewood if he plays a lot and if not can skap for Maddison, Mount etc.

Henderson at 5mil seems worth the extra 0.5 over the other choices for now.

But yes Foster is playing so far in pre-season as much as him. However Watford have not been keeping any cleansheets

If it did happen I assume they'd sign a replacement but I'm starting with Foster regardless.

Toney Buendia or Tammy if he moves?

Prefer Buendia but the other two allows another playing player on the bench.

I am currently on Toney and Douglas luiz rather than buendia and 4.5m forward

Arsenal conceded the 4th lowest goals last year and i think white will do well. He has just signed and is 45mn. I would add that I think it's very unlikely that shaw will start the first couple of games. Everton are shot to bits at the moment. Richarlison at the olympics. Pickford is missing forst few games. I would avoid. Mahrez - do you want to play pep roulette every week? I would go A with williams of united who may start first couple of games. But honestly, white could be a great defender at that price

Cheers.....yes, ayling could easily be white

I guess the decision is double lpool defence in a 343

Or taa and mahrez in 352...thanks

i have doubled up. with VVD back they will keep more clean sheets and TAA / Robbo can get forward a bit more. I am tempted by VVD over robbo to save the 5 mill. What do you think? I think he will go beast mode having missed out last year.

I think if I double up it will be nothing full backs....they are attackers and defenders rolled into one...cheersv

i just wrote a long reply but it's being checked as i mentioned what had happened to siggy. In sum, yes, read he wont be back training for a while. Suspect he will have had a blow out too. James R wants to leave, richarlisopn is still away in japan and will be for another 2 weeks....and will be knackered. having played copa america, then olympics, ...the new manager is hated by the fans for obvious reason...i just dont think it spells out a goo start for them

I like doing a 5m mid + cheap striker rotation. It gives some good options re. fixtures. However, this year there is a lack of a 5m midfield option which is annoying.

Neither the cheap striker. Below Toney price points is just so bland

If you put a gun to my head id probably take J-Rod at the 5.5 point, followed by Josh King. It's annoying cos by having to go upto 6 mill means you have to play them every game...that extra 0.5 kills it

The lack of a £5.0 mid is indeed annoying. Closest one is ESR at £5.5, but that early on it feels like quite a lot of money to spend on a player who will rotate and will be 1st bench at times.

What are your opinions on Antonio vs Iheanacho?

Both at £7.5. Nacho was outstanding near the end of the season, but a bit more prone to rotation when compared to Antonio. Antonio will play every game when fit and generally plays further forward than Nacho (based on data from last season).

Both good options. Impossible to know who will have more points after first 5 games

I keep coming back to this.... Thoughts?

    Sanchez (4.0)
    TAA, Digne, Webster (Llorente, 4.0)
    Salah, Bruno, Jota, Raph (4.5)
    Watkins, Antonio, Nacho

Brighton & Leeds rotation is pretty good. I'd prefer Lamptey but he's injured. Could go Veltman & Ayling tbf which might be better

      Very similar from me...
      Martinez (4.0)
      TAA, Digne, Webster, (Fofana, 4.0)
      Salah, Bruno, Buendia(to Raph GW4), Sarr (4.5)
      DCL, Antonio, Watkins

Personally I'm hoping for a 5.0m midfielder to shine early so bring him in for Sarr and upgrade Webster to a 5.5m defender, such as R James or Shaw

    where to spend a 1m?

    Bachman Foster
    Digne Trent Ayling Webster Williams
    Buendia Sarr Mo Bruno Brownhill
    Bamford Watkin Wilson

Thinking Brownhill to a Dallas/ESR/Mbuemo to have a first on the bench 5.5 guy. Sarr to 7m mid (Zaha/Maddo) or put in into my def, perhaps get United cover in
