£4.0m FPL defender Tsimikas impresses in injured Robertson’s stead

We round up the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) talking points from Monday’s pre-season match at Anfield in our latest Scout Notes article.

You can read about the goals, assists, injury news and FPL takeaways from the weekend’s games below:

Don’t forget to check out our comprehensive pre-season page for more information on the action taking place ahead of Gameweek 1.

LIVERPOOL 3-1 OSASUNA

  • Goals: own-goal, Roberto Firmino x2 (£9.0m)
  • Assists: Fabinho (£5.5m), Kostas Tsimikas (£4.0m), Takumi Minamino (£5.5m)

Liverpool completed their pre-season schedule with a routine 3-1 win over La Liga outfit Osasuna at Anfield on Monday night.

24 hours on from the 1-1 draw with Athletic Bilbao, Jürgen Klopp fielded a selection of first-teamers in need of minutes and fringe players.

Takumi Minamino (£5.5m) was lively throughout and netted the opener before Roberto Firmino (£9.0m) converted an excellent low cross from Kostas Tsimikas (£4.0m) and added a second just before half-time.

As one of the later arrivals to the squad, having reached the final of the Copa América with Brazil, Firmino got 60 minutes in the tank and will have done his prospects no harm at all with an excellent showing – something that’s not ideal for Diogo Jota (£7.5m) and his first-team prospects.

The second half was a rather more subdued affair, with Klopp introducing a raft of substitutions.

Ibrahima Konaté (£5.5m) caught the eye with his distribution from the back on his first Anfield appearance, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (£6.0m) looked sharp in midfield, while Tsimikas impressed with an adventurous display from left-back and was also handed some set-pieces.

Robertson and Watkins injury latest as Son starts up front again in Kane absence 2

Prior to kick-off, Andrew Robertson (£7.0m) took to social media to confirm a period on the sidelines with ankle ligament damage, which was later discussed by Jürgen Klopp, with his manager’s comments suggesting that he could be out until after the international break:

“It could have been much worse. It will not be too long. I’m not sure if it will be before the international break or after it but, as I say, I think we got lucky.”

Given Tsimikas’ solid pre-season, he could well be a starter against Norwich City in Gameweek 1, then.

On the performance, Klopp said:

“The first half was absolutely exceptional in many different departments. There were a lot of long ball and I liked our formation around that and how we passed the ball forward with Bobby in between the lines.

From a speed perspective, we were exceptional today and Ox was on fire. Fab controlled the counter-pressing situations and how it should be. The last line were good, we defended well and the goals we scored were outstanding. The second half was harder but there’s nothing really to moan about.

With all the changes, I didn’t feel we really disrupted the rhythm so it was good. Ben [Woodburn] has shown up in a top, top way. In pre-season, he’s played in four or five different positions.

Kostas has also shown up in pre-season as well and on top of that, he’s needed as well.”

On this evidence, Liverpool look all set for their Premier League opener against Norwich City on Saturday.

Liverpool XI: Kelleher, N Williams (Bradley 80), Konate (Davies 80), Gomez (R Williams 60), Tsimikas (Beck 71), Oxlade-Chamberlain, Fabinho (Thiago 60), Jones (Woodburn 30), Gordon (Origi 46), Minamino (Henderson 71), Firmino (Clarkson 60)

Tsimikas could be the key to getting Salah Son and Bruno in the same draft. Thoughts?

    Sanchez (4.0)
    Trent Shaw Coufal Tsimikas (White)
    Salah Bruno Son Benrahma (Brownhill)
    Ings Toney (4.5)

My team is almost identical, so thumbs up from me!
(Digne, Raphinha, Antonio v Coufal, Benrahma, Ings).

I think lots will want to get Son in quite quickly if he's playing 9, and has some v good fixtures in GW2-4, so I've decided just to get him in now, rather than book a transfer.

Lots of people looking to squeeze every penny. Based on stats you could also argue Villa overperformed defensively last season, will have to see how they look in the new season.

I had him in my first draft but Villa's run of poor fixtures is too long to justify 5.5m since even a lot of the better fixtures are against teams that could well score against them (West Ham, Wolves, etc.)

It's not always about clean sheets. It's about save points.

He can score 4 points even if Villa concede twice. If they get a clean sheet he can be scoring 10+

Compare with Sanchez who's ceiling is 6 and 7s

        1. Nate(U)dog(ie)

True, I'm definitely not arguing that, I guess I just feel like there are better options for the money, at least for the first half of the season. I don't love Sanchez as an option but he's in a team that is well organised and likes to have a lot of the ball which helps, and I have Meslier too as I don't like having one one keeper to rely on all the time especially when the tough games come.

It's a new season and after AA33 stormed to the title last year, Scout Picks Community Champion is back for another year.

For the uninitiated among you, each week the Scouts pick a team of players who they think will fare best in the upcoming Gameweek but their choice may leave some people questioning - can I do better?

Well, time to prove you’re more than just talk - each week we will once again allow a member of the community to pick a team to pit head to head against the Scout Picks, with the user who has the largest winning margin across the 38 weeks taking home a £100 Amazon voucher and entry to our Mods and Cons League along with the rest of our team.

The selected Champion each week will have a budget of 83m to select 11 players but outside of that standard FPL rules apply - you need to use a normal FPL formation and with a limit of 3 players from a team.

If you're interested in applying, email us at support@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk with your FFS username and FPL Team ID and we’ll select a champion by random from the entrants for Gameweek 1.

The Champion will be picked Thursday midday, so make sure to enter by then! The Champion then has until 11am Friday morning to send in their team, but we’ll work with you to allow tweaks right up to the deadline (as we know it may be a very busy day).

    Good luck everyone

    Best 4.0 goalkeeper?
    - highest chance to come in meaning that his team will heavily underperform
    - not highly owned so no risk of 3.9

    What’s your thoughts?
    - Gunn to take over KruL after an horrible start from Norwich?
    - Virginia over pickford? (Is he really number two with begovic in?)
    - runnarson over Leno?

    Other options?

        nope, more underappreciation for Krul.

    2. FPL Theorist
      • 4 Years

Foster is the most likely to come in, they still might sell Bachmann.

"Highly owned" can be overrated because a player needs a 20% decline as a percentage of original ownership to drop in price. The chance of a player dropping from, say, 30% to 24% is not too much different from the chance of a player dropping from 3.0% to 2.4%.

Krul is a top keeper IMO, but he's in a team that likes to attack in numbers and leaves him exposed a lot. Nothing against Gunn but they'd be crazy to drop him

On the surface given how many points he got Martinez is worth 5.5m but I don't see many teams with him in.

Are we all being blindsided by fancy attackers? Or is this Villa team a bit of a work in progress and losing Grealish makes them an entirely different prospect?

They over performed last year, a few lucky CS and heroics from Martinez, I think they regress a little and there isn’t enough between him and Sanchez to justify the million, still a decent pick for though!

    Afternoon everyone.

What are people’s thoughts on SON … are you starting him v Man City or leaving the funds and bringing him in GW2 and punting on someone else for GW1?

Trying to decide whether to lock in the transfer or start him and save it?

    1. Jimbo-Jones

Decided to start with him. Don't like booking in transfers, as means missing out or even taking -4 for a bandwagon.
Son likely to play 9 v City, and this early in the season defences are usually slightly shakier, so wouldn't be surprised to see him score.

I'll honestly be tempted to captain Son against Wolves, we'll see against Leicester how they shape up but I think the likes of Barnes and Vardy might find a lot of space on the break and that the same could be said for Son against them

    6. Nate(U)dog(ie)
      • 3 Years

He has a great record against City and it's early days when teams tend to be a bit leakier. If you have him then definitely start him

      1. Eh, just one more thing ...
        • 12 Years
        2 years, 8 months ago

Yes … if he’s up top .. and given its early doors where defences could be a bit leaky, I’m leaning towards holding and having a transfer in the bag for the inevitable kick in the nads that will be incoming before GW1 closes.

        Thanks for the feedback people’s.

I'm the same. Have Havertz and 1.5itb for Son in GW2, finding it very hard to decide as I think he could haul against Palace before Lukaku takes up the CF spot but I'm still thinking the sensible choice is to just do it now in case I have bigger issues, and then if not I can get Lukaku when I think he'll begin starting games. Booking in transfers feels like it'll cause more pain than missing out on a few points in one week.

It's too difficult to afford him with Salah and Bruno, and with Spurs having a new defensive-styled manager and facing city in GW1 I'm holding off for now.

With Covid still about I imagine two playing subs are essential.

    I see many light benches.

Definitely something to consider, 3 playing subs (even if just for a 2 or 3 pointer) is gonna be helpful

Brownhill for me but Gilmour or Bissouma fine also. Probably all just going to get minutes without any attacking returns

Maybe Moder at Brighton - could pop. But with many having Sanchez and a Bri defender that fills up the slots.

Without TAA it allows this mid:

    Sanchez,
    Tsimikas, Shaw, Coufal
    Son, Burno, Mahrez, Salah, Raphinha
    Toney, Antonio

    (Steele, White, Amartey, Scarlett)

Go for broke or play safe with Trent?

That is some midfield, certainly tempting. Everything is a trade off. Trent is great but you’ll score a load of points with that midfield and should have Liverpool clean sheet coverage anyway

Yeh I'm thinking it might be worth taking advantage of the cheap Pool clean sheet coverage while it lasts and go big in the mid

TAA is basically a 7.5 mid who gets CS points

It's true... feel like it could pay off (until TAA mega haul GW1)

Looks great but problem you'll have is that in a few weeks you'll have a full bench getting pretty much 0 mins and might want to fit in TAA again. If using WC you'll probably be fine but just be wary of price changes

RMT if you dare! I know the bench is weak but can my heavy hitters make it worth an early WC? My plan is either to WC to get Lukaku or rewrite the team to have 2m in the bank and upgrade Vardy to Lukaku when he comes.

    Mendy
    TAA - Shaw - Digne - Amartey
    Salah - Bruno - Greenwood - Jota
    Ings - Toney

    Foster - Manquillo - Obafemi - Brownhill
