FPL Gameweek 3 Scout Picks: West Ham triple-up and no Liverpool players

There’s not a Liverpool or Chelsea player in sight in the Scout Picks for Gameweek 3 of Fantasy Premier League (FPL).

A West Ham triple-up instead provides the spine of the side this week, with Tottenham Hotspur and Leicester City also represented by a brace of assets as we play the fixtures.

After Sam, Az, Neale and Tom submitted their Scout Squad selections earlier this week, we have chosen our best players ahead of tomorrow’s 11:00 BST deadline.

We line up in a 3-4-3 formation and come in at £81.8m, well under our £83.0m budget.

GOALKEEPER

Chasing the points? Perhaps we can be accused of that as we plump for Hugo Lloris (£5.5m) between the posts but back-to-back clean sheets for the Lilywhites and the visit of a Watford side who created precious little in the Championship last season (let’s overlook the Gameweek 1 victory over Villa), not to mention away at Brighton last week, sees the Frenchman get the nod.

Oliver Skipp (£4.5m), Pierre-Emile Hojberg (£5.0m) and Dele Alli (£6.5m) have shown plenty of graft in front of the back four and while Spurs may rank bottom of the table for shots conceded, six teams have worse ‘expected goals conceded’ (xGC) tallies. Ergo: lots of shots for Lloris to save and not as many high-quality chances.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s side have also faced perhaps two of the more attack-minded teams in the division in Manchester City and Bruno Lage’s gung-ho Wolves, so will surely have an easier ride this weekend.

DEFENDERS

Leicester City’s backline hasn’t really convinced for a while, even going back to the tail-end of last season, and the continued absence of Jannik Vestergaard and Jonny Evans weakens them at centre-half. Still, Ricardo Pereira‘s (£5.5m) promising start to the season (which hasn’t really been reflected in his underlying numbers yet) has earned him a national team call-up and there are murmurings that he could be the one to replace the banned Ayoze Perez on the right wing this weekend. The fact that four of Manchester City’s goals against Norwich came from the Canaries’ left-back position further influences our selection.

Only two clubs have allowed more chances to be created from set plays than Crystal Palace this season and Aaron Cresswell (£5.5m) indeed bagged an assist from a dead-ball delivery in a match-up between these two sides in 2020/21. Joel Ward seems more of an obliging opponent than Tyrick Mitchell on the other flank, too, when we were weighing up the Cresswell v Coufal conundrum.

Ruben Dias (£6.0m) delivered on the goods for us last week and while he may not offer that edge-of-the-seat appeal of a Joao Cancelo (£6.0m), the release of the Manchester City teamsheet on a matchday is much less stressful when you have plumped for the Portuguese centre-half over many of his teammates. No side has created fewer chances than a spluttering Arsenal in 2021/22, with the Gunners failing to score a single goal against City in their last five meetings.

MIDFIELDERS

Opposition fallibilities influence Raphinha‘s (£6.5m) nomination as much as his own ability. The Clarets are not only among the three worst defences for crosses and chances created from their left flank, they’ve also allowed more opportunities to be created from set plays than any other top-flight side – a decent match-up, you’d think, for Leeds’ corner-taking right-winger.

Four attacking returns from an xGI of 1.01 suggest the Said Benrahma (£6.3m) points bonanza can’t go on forever but confidence is an underrated commodity in the Fantasy world and the Algerian is brimming with it currently, not to mention a new-found maturity that has finally seen him win lukewarm praise from his manager. While Crystal Palace’s two new centre-halves look the part, Joel Ward struggled with the Brentford overlap last weekend and the Eagles’ away record (four wins from the last 17) bodes well for the Hammers in Gameweek 3.

Bruno Fernandes (£12.6m) may have blanked last weekend and face the spectre of Cristiano Ronaldo eating into his ownership but the fact remains that he has returned 11 of his 18 double-digit hauls on the road and still averages 7.5 points per game on his travels despite last week’s one-pointer.

Son Heung-min (£10.1m) has produced double-digit hauls in exactly half of his last 18 home matches and has only blanked in two of his last 19 appearances against newly promoted clubs. Up against a Watford side who have conceded on four occasions in their first two league fixtures in 2021/22, not to mention 10 goals in their three pre-season fixtures against top-flight sides, there could be a haul to be had against the Hornets.

FORWARDS

Gameweek 3 Scout Picks features West Ham triple-up and

Six attacking returns in two matches – 40% of his 2020/21 total – is probably all we need to mention with regards to the selection of Michail Antonio (£7.8m). The underlying stats suggest this is not a complete fluke, even if the points-per-match average is unsustainable: the West Ham striker tops all players for big chances (five) and goal attempts (11), with eight of them coming from inside the penalty box. Antonio also has the second-best record for penalty area touches (14) among FPL forwards.

With some concerns about whether Harvey Barnes (£6.9m) keeps his place this weekend, Jamie Vardy (£10.5m) looks a safer – if more expensive – punt as Brendan Rodgers will surely only add to his assemblage of forwards against Norwich City rather than take the veteran striker out of the equation. Vardy’s record against promoted teams (credit to TopMarx) is also eye-catching: zero blanks in his last 11 matches, six double-digit hauls and an average of 9.55 points per match.

Former Magpie Adam Armstrong (£6.0m) could make hay on Tyneside against a defence that has allowed more big chances than any other team bar Arsenal in 2021/22 and also rank bottom for expected goals conceded (xGC). The ‘law of the ex’ is also perhaps a factor with this selection, of course, but his link-up play with Che Adams (£7.0m) has caught the unbiased eye and he has been presented with a big chance in both of his Saints appearances so far.

THE CAPTAIN

Who are the best captain options for FPL Gameweek 36+?

We choose the Scout Picks captain using a four-way vote between our Scout Squad pundits.

Because we use Fantasy Football Scout data so heavily in this process, the skipper we choose each Gameweek is known only to those with a Fantasy Football Scout subscription and revealed to the public only when the deadline has passed.

Here is how we voted for Gameweek 3:

COMMUNITY CHAMPION

FPL Gameweek 2 round-up: Sunday goals, assists, bonus and injuries 4

Each week, one of the Fantasy Football Scout community takes on the Scout Picks by pitting their chosen XI against ours.

The Community Member who beats our team by the largest margin will win a £100 Amazon Voucher and a place in our Moderators and Contributors League for the following season.

Our champion is week cfreel, who has gone with a 3-4-3 line-up of Martinez; Coufal, Konsa, Reguilon; Son, Benrahma, Grealish, Raphinha; Kane (c), Vardy, Antonio.

We’ll bring you up to speed on the results of the first two contests in our next Scout Picks feature.

  9. What will be the FPL impact of Ronaldo joining United?

So what is the impact of Ronaldo at United?

Does he become a perma-captain for a huge swathe of people playing the game, particulary given the size of United's fanbase? Or is he just another big hitter to be treated the same as Salah, Kane, Lukaku etc?

In big picture terms does the abundance of premium picks push us towards Lateriser style upside-chasing, rotating our heavy-hitters to try and catch big captaincy hauls? Or do certain premiums become locks in your side while you spend your fts trying to find differentials among mid-price options?

And what of the impact on United? Bruno dead as an option? Pogba more likely to get pushed into a deeper role? Greenwood minutes more under threat?

Also City I guess. With no Kane and no Ronaldo arriving, do some of their players become better/worse options if a striker isn't signed?

And does any of this change our wildcard plans?

    GIve me your thoughts.

One player who has kind of been forgotten about is Sancho. He has high potential to score and assist and with Ronaldo in the box he has a brilliant target. Sancho is unlikely to outscore Ronaldo but could score a lot better than midfielders of similar price, I think people are just worried about this Bundesliga tax.

I'd actually forgotten about Sancho too. With Bruno likely having lost set-pieces and being more expensive while Greenwood' minutes must sure be inconsistent at best, Sancho possibly becomes to person to go to if you want to double on United's attack.

This is probably the best XI when all fit.

      ..............Ronaldo................
      Rashford.. Bruno ..Sancho
      ........Pogba...McTom..........
      Shaw Maguire Varane AWB
      ................. Hendo................

Lots of rotation of course. And likely different setups for different opponents. Pogba and McFred against Leeds for example when more energy at CM is needed.

But Ronaldo is going to score 20+ goals for sure. Bruno, Pogba and Sancho are 3 of the best creators on the planet. Then add Shaw in the mix. That's a ton of top quality chance creators feeding the greatest goalscorer of all time. Goals for sure.

I'm hoping we buy a DM. But if Pogba plays a deeper role that's 5 hanging back, and 5 penetrating. Balance.

AWB will hang back now that they have someone like Sancho who can hold the width.

Pogba playing deeper is a terrible waste imo and to be honest I maintain that it's not balanced at all. Man City can play with 5 penetrating because the front players press and they are much better in possession, I don't think United can - especially without an Ndidi/Kante like player who covers ridiculous amounts of ground. On paper your squad is amazing, but in practice I think Chelsea and Man City will prove to be much better as a collective unit.

Pogba is a difficult one because he is so good in so many areas. He's one of the best long passers in the world, so Ole likes him coming deep and threading long early balls into the forwards. I think he sees him as a deep lying playmaker. It's important to have someone who can progress the ball from defence into attack, and he's the only one who can do it for United really.

But yeah, Chelsea look great of course. They have one of the best central midfields in the world. Jorginho progresses the ball from deep for them, how Pogba does it for United. The difference is that they have Kante instead of McTominay...

I don't know who'll win the league, I suspect it's Chelsea, but I like these United signings so far.

I'm a huge fan of Pogba, but I feel personally that his best qualities are blunted in a double pivot. He's a player that operates best when he is given a level of freedom which just isn't possible as a deep lying midfielder. He lacks the discipline and football intelligence of a Jorginho (who I think is also a better progressive passer) and I don't see them as comparable at all if I'm honest.

As for the league, if I were to guess I'd say Chelsea and City will be fighting for the title, Liverpool third and United fourth. A lot can happen though, especially when each squad is so full of quality.

No way Matic should be first choice. United seriously need a defensive mid, if anything that should have been the priority this window, though admittedly we've had a fairly decent one!

I agree completely, a top quality defensive mid should have been the priority. Many will disagree, but I think it would have a far more positive impact on the team than the Ronaldo signing

I'm just regurgitating stuff I've learnt from top managers. I've seen lectures and read many books, and was working towards coaching badges before I had health problems. This is a good video to learn about team balance: https://youtu.be/k3sAWHFZXoc Holland has won the Premier League with both Conte and Jose as assistant manager, he's thought of very highly.

Did Ole not confirm Hendo was #1 this season? He's just missing because of covid. Hendo was better than DDG is almost every metric. His sweeping and distribution is on another level. DDG hasn't been the same since his disastrous World Cup for Spain. Already had a few wobbly moments this season.

Salah, Lukaku, Ronaldo and Kane the premiums to rotate (plus KDB once he's back - Bruno off pens would make him less appealing to me). Absolutely have to play the fixtures. I don't see any other way. Most (myself included) will not be comfortable with an extreme Lateriser-style upside chasing where the premiums are rotated very frequently (e.g., every 2-3 GWs). Neither will most set and forget two premiums the whole season. I can see most going for the 'middle path' strategy - having 2 premiums at any one time for a block of good fixture runs (4-6 GWs) and rotating when the good fixtures come to an end. Sticking to the planned strategy despite week-to-week ostensible dips in form among the premiums, which will most often be attributable to variance and little more.

3 premiums + TAA possible but looking at Sutherns' team on BB earlier this week didn't inspire confidence that it can work sustainably without severely upsetting team balance.

U can captain Lukaku and Ronaldo for most of the season without getting anyone else. Chelsea and United fixture difficulty dovetails quite nicely. Till GW6 Ronaldo captain. GW7-11 Lukaku Captain. GW12-27 Ronaldo again. Then 27-38 Lukaku.

Good point, didn't realize how well the FDR dovetails. There'll be minor issues here and there to be sure (e.g., GW13 when Chelsea and United face each other).

On paper the rotation based on fixtures sounds great. I just don't know how long sticking to such a macro strategy can be sustained without giving in to switching premiums based on perceived short-term form.

Yep, I don't think the three premium approach is a runner.

Also completely unnecessary depending on how often Ronaldo is a fallback captain. I saw Josh from Always Cheating suggest on twitter that he could basically be a perma-captain. The more captaincy he takes up, the less value other premiums provide.

I did see the tweet. I'm still skeptical about perma-captain though.

            My take would be:

            1) He won't be a perma-captain among the more plugged in managers but the sheer weight of his ownership will mean constant fretting about *not* captaining him. A lot of EO talk.

            2) The abundance of premiums will be a defining feature of the season one way or another but I agree that most won't opt for that high-risk approach of constantly swapping big hitters. I would guess it will largely settle into Ronaldo + one rotating premium spot for most of the season.

            3) The impact on Salah will be interesting as with Bruno lessened as an option he is currently the only prime premium in midfield. Which (if we adopt the Ronaldo + another approach) means he will be a slightly trickier premium to swap in or out as compared to hopping between Kane and Lukaku say.

            4) It likely makes Sancho a better pick given he should be relatively nailed on it that United attack while still being significantly cheaper than Bruno. If you want to double on the United attack at any point that is where you probably go.

            5) We will certainly see a lot of wildcards played next week but actually it should be relatively easy to bring Ronaldo in without a wildcard given you can happily drop Bruno. There may be value in sticking to the current GW7 plan.

            6) Another side effect of all these premiums is that it possibly makes bench boosting in a DGW a more tortuous process. With all these premiums taking up our budget, spreading our funds across the squad and then having to carry that less premium-orientated structure afterwards might prove difficult for some.

English season most crippling in Europe in terms of fixtures.
Ole ran Bruno into ground last season.
Greater squad depth going to help in reality but probably detrimental to FPL.
Utd finally maturing and will follow the Pep Roulette model, which now has Chelsea as a member also.
Positive for FPL is that means there can't be a premium template model and there's very still a game to be played.

Ronaldo takes them ahead of Bruno for Portugal, so I'd be surprised if he didn't pull rank at United too.

No doubting Ronaldo's record. 81 goals, 15 assists in 97 games - absolute machine. Will be excellent at United, with Pogba, Sancho, Fernandes around him he'll get plenty of service. If we expect him to start GW4 he becomes the standout captain, and I plan to bring him in.

Presence of Kane, Lukaku, Ronaldo means having at least one premium forward looks like a must so swaps to a massive hitter coming into a strong run of fixtures don't cost as much.

Ronaldo will take pens and DFKs. He's Ronaldo, always the star of the show, personal glory means everything to him and he will take every chance to improve his goal tally any way he can. Fernandes becomes a much inferior asset and Greenwood soon a non option.

All in all, goals, goals, goals and goals.

Indeed, did Portugal not operate a "hit Ronaldo" with all passes policy during Euros?
Perhaps all regular starters for Utd will get an assist.

It's blowing my mind that people are writing Bruno off as an option due to fewer penalties, without acknowledging that he has a decent chance of breaking the all-time record for assists in a season. KDB ended up on 251 points when he equalled the assist record, and he only scored 11 open-play goals that season. Bruno scored just 2 fewer than that from open play last season. He's still a very promising option.

Unless most of the premiums have an Auba-level implosion or the points are too spread across their teams, there should be too much competition for Ronaldo to be an effective perma-captain. Timing the moves from premium to premium will be crucial; the template is about to be busted open and those who hold the stagnating assets for too long could be punished hard. Our moves may have to be more aggressive and proactive than in previous seasons, so it looks like upside-chasing will be the way forward.

I don't see what Bruno offers more than Sancho FPL wise with no penalties and direct FKs once Sancho settles in. Will just go with Ronaldo if I want a United captain and Sancho to double up if they're very hot with good fixtures.

I'm just not convinced that Sancho won't be another Werner. He has almost zero form for United and almost zero Premier League experience, and it could take some time for him to really get going. Bruno's been smashing it for over 18 months now and there are fewer unknowns with him.

FPL-wise I'll be happy if Sancho hits the ground running though - more options is more fun.

It’s not the penalties for me, he could even retain them or some but we’ve seen how Bruno is severely impacted playing for Portugal behind Ronaldo. Don’t think Ole is good enough to get them to play exceptionally well together

Portugal =/= United, and international football =/= club football. Ronaldo himself has scored ~0.6 goals per game for Portugal and ~0.75 goals per game for clubs. Bruno's international form could just be an anomaly, like loads of the best English and Argentinian players over the years.

I'm not saying Bruno will definitely be worthwhile, but "dead as an option?" (as Sully put it) is a really overblown question. We'll have to wait and see.

Fair enough. Understand you can’t simply compare league form to country.

I also don’t think they should be priced the same at 12-12.5m

Assuming Ronaldo starts up front then Bruno’s output would be closer to 10.5 imo and therefore overpriced but not “dead as an option”

I was thinking before this move what’s the point in wc gw7/8 just to get the same team as everyone else. At least this makes it more widespread.
Expecting decent sales for Bruno though (Portugal 2.0)

The death of Bruno at 12 for sure.

As most have said Ronaldo will be camping in the opposition penalty area blasting shots or having crossed from Sancho/Shaw etc on his bonce powered at the goal. He’ll be a new ‘if in doubt captain Salah/Ronaldo’ option.

I’ll be going Shaw and Ronaldo and then Sancho or maybe Pogba as well for good fixture runs.

I think Man City will have been stung by this too…wouldn’t be surprised to see them bring in a striker (maybe even a big bid for Kane to add to the excitement). If not Torres could be worth a slot with bench cover.

FPL wise: expect team values to drop. Loads will opt for GW 4 wildcard to fit Ronaldo in and if players opt for 3 premium option massive selling will be seen for Bruno, Salah, Taa, Ings, vardy,Son to make cash available.
Upside chasing as discussed above will not be easy

I don't think Ronaldo can be a perma-Captain because there will be too much chance of him being rested regularly and unexpectedly. Allegri said only a week ago the he would have to accept being on the bench more this season to make sure he was fit and rested.
Ronaldo himself seems to have been pacing himself through seasons the last four or five years, getting himself 100% fit and firing January onwards for the business end of the season. So it may be a case of just getting him in during the periods he's fully firing and well rested.

Sacrificing TAA and Bruno allows 3 super-premiums: Ronaldo, Salah & Lukaku/Kane.

I am currently on this (powerful looking) WC draft:
      Sanchez
      James/Digne - Coufal - Dier - Semedo
      Salah - Benrahma - Raphinha - Gray/Traore
      Ronaldo* - Lukaku - Antonio

      Bench: 4.0 GK - Duffy/Livra - Allan - 4.5 Fwd

      *Assuming Ronaldo is 13.0

      That's like the current template
WC needs to be more unique IMO

I don't know why people ask captain questions like this with no analysis. There's a poll for a reason. Follow it if unsure or make your own mind up.

To gather opinions of the forum. I seen the poll. I am just wondering what the thoughts of the forum are. if you don't want to pose your opinion kindly scroll past. there is no malice in my question 🙂

The poll IS the opinion of the forum.
Do you want everyone to give you their own opinion?
          They already have.

I simply wanted context. I am leaning into Son. the Poll surprised me with Antonio and Fernandes ahead of him. I simply wanted some reasoning from anyone. apologies if it offended anyone. it is my first time posting on here.

Dear friends, I know I've asked before, but a certain Portuguese signing might change things. Help me out please, I really do need it:

    Meslier (4.0)
TAA / Shaw / Coufal (Livramento, Omobamidele)
    Salah / Bruno / Raphinha / Barnes / Benrahma
    Bamford / Ings (4.5)

    0.5 in the bank

Can I *not* have Antonio and roll my reamining FT? I wanted him over Ings, I guess, but the prospect of having 2 ft to bring in Ronaldo feels good. What do you think?

Bamford against LIV is not gonna happen for me but definitely a good longterm punt. Ings still has the fixtures this week. I don't see where Antonio fits in to begin with. Even between two FT's you don't know how much Ronny will cost so act on the info you have today.

Saw somewhere that Ings and Antonio have similar odds of scoring. Palace not that bad and don't forget West Ham played against 10 man..

If you're eyeing on Ronaldo, don't think it's worth it. I would also be looking at DCL or jimenez from next gw onwards.

Very kind and insightful of you. Thank you very much for this. That settles it. Good luck, sir!
