Scout Notes

Martinez and Buendia to miss Gameweek 4 as injuries and Covid also hit Villa

We continue our Scout Notes of the weekend’s Fantasy Premier League (FPL) matches with analysis of Aston Villa v Brentford.

For a briefer summary of Saturday’s action, check out our Scoreboard summary here.

ASTON VILLA 1-1 BRENTFORD

  • Goals: Emiliano Buendia (£6.4m) | Ivan Toney (£6.4m)
  • Assists: Danny Ings (£8.1m) | Pontus Jansson (£4.5m)
  • Bonus: Buendia x3, Jansson x2, Toney x1

BUENDIA SCORES AS INGS BAGS AN ASSIST

Emiliano Buendia (£6.4m) scored his first goal for Aston Villa in Saturday’s 1-1 draw against Brentford.

However, Dean Smith was forced into a late re-think ahead of the game, after it was revealed that John McGinn (£6.0m) and Jacob Ramsey (£4.5m) would miss out as they were following Covid protocols.

As if that was not enough, Tyrone Mings (£5.0m) was also ruled out with a rib injury and Ezri Konsa (£5.0m) picked up a knee problem during the game.

With so many absent, Villa struggled to create and had to turn to Ashley Young (£5.0m) in an unfamiliar central midfield role alongside Douglas Luiz (£4.5m) and youngster Carney Chukwuemeka (£4.5m).

The rejig also meant that Axel Tuanzebe (£4.5m) partnered Konsa at centre-half, while former Bees forward Ollie Watkins (£7.3m) also came on for his first minutes of the season.

Aston Villa’s average position map v Brentford in Gameweek 3, with Ashley Young (no. 18) deployed in a central midfield role

Danny Ings (£8.1m) bagged an assist to make it three attacking returns in three starts, though the fact he has managed to score two goals off of just four shots suggests that most FPL managers will be happy to move him on ahead of Gameweek 4, especially given Villa’s toughening schedule:

It’s also worth noting that Emiliano Martinez (£5.5m) and Buendia will both miss the Gameweek 4 clash with Chelsea as a result of their international commitments with Argentina.

The pair have agreed to make themselves available for the first two World Cup qualifying matches against Venezuela and Brazil, but will not take part in the third fixture against Bolivia, which means the duo will be available for the visit of Everton in Gameweek 5.

Mings has joined up with the England squad to assuage fears about his fitness but there have been no updates on Konsa as yet.

TONEY OFF THE MARK

Brentford continued their unbeaten start to the 2021/22 Premier League season at Villa Park, with Ivan Toney (£6.4m) netting the opener as he converted confidently from Pontus Jansson’s (£4.5m) flick-on.

“He’s shown in all three games he’s more than capable of playing in the Premier League with his link-up play, pressing and his ability to be in the right place with chances. Now he’s finally got his goal on the board, I expect to see even more from him. He’s a fantastic player.” – Thomas Frank on Ivan Toney

The Bees probably shaded it overall, and have adjusted well to life in the top tier, picking up a victory against Arsenal in their opening game and back-to-back draws away at Crystal Palace and now Villa.

David Raya (£4.5m), one of Thomas Frank’s key performers in the opening rounds, now sits joint-second in the goalkeeper standings on 17 points, having kept two clean sheets, produced two save points and a single bonus point.

[I’m] happy with most of the performance. We started the game brilliant at a difficult place to play. We were brave, pressed high and scored and I felt we were really on top of the game. Then one miscommunication and it gave them the chance.

In the second half I felt we started better and then it was more even in the last part of the game. I felt if there should have been a narrow winner it should have been us.

I would like us to be even braver. My message before every game is to go for a win, play forward and attack. I just probably need to keep reinforcing it.” – Thomas Frank

VILLA XI: Martinez, Cash, Konsa (Hause 89), Tuanzebe, Targett, Douglas Luiz, Chukwuemeka (Nakamba 63), Young (Watkins 79), Buendia, El Ghazi, Ings.

BRENTFORD XI: Raya, Ajer, Jansson, Pinnock, Canos, Norgaard, Janelt (Baptiste 89), Henry, Ghoddos (Wissa 66), Mbeumo (Jensen 80), Toney.

Lots of ‘Firmino is out for months’ talk. Jota owners naturally buoyed by the story, but for non-owners where is this news coming from?

DEF TAA, Shaw, Semedo, White, Livra
MID Salah, Torres, Jota, Raphaina, Allan
    FWD DCL, Lukaku, Antonio.

    That's my WC for now.

Jota could be Greenwood for 1 week.

Toyed with Kane(cr7) in place of DCL but the midfield was disgusting

If you had Antonio and no Leeds players and were on a wildcard. Would you choose benhrama or raphinha? I can’t do anything of note with the extra 0.3

It makes sense why he is saying Raphinha as Leeds have some great fixtures coming up soon so Raph is a good option too. I just think Benrahma is too good right now and especially when he has an attacking partner in Antonio to play alongside it's risky not having him.

Raphinha, West Ham look like they'll sign Vlasic that'll likely move into Benrahma's position leaving him challenging Fornals on the left and/or Bowen on the right, I think it'll naturally affect his FPL output. Raphinha meanwhile might move into a no.10 role behind Bamford with Dan James close to joining Leeds and they have excellent fixtures

Or Raphinha could end up getting less minutes now that Leeds have signed James.

get rid now. you have to do it anyway, you might as well do it whilst maximising team value.
those 0.1s make a big difference during the season, and might save you a -4 or a -8 at certain times.

Any suggestion of what to do with this team over the next few weeks
My plan over the next few weeks is to get Laporte and Reece James in for Regulion and Shaw that still leave over 2 million to spend up front but not sure where to spend it yet. I have used my 2 GW4 FT by getting TAA and Torres for Stones and Bruno

    Raya

    VVD Shaw TAA Reguilon

    Salah Torres Grealish Greenwood

    DCL Antonio

    Steele Ayling Bissouma Obafemi

Thanks I was think Mount too.
He seems to have a pretty nailed spot. Most will probably triple up I might just go James and Mount. Rudiger looks nailed too but can’t see much more that CS from him. Not prepared to rip this team apart for a Lukaku or a Ronaldo.

I certainly won't be defending the Glazers and agree that they are disgraceful. Main point was transfers out do have an effect on transfers in and this may help.

Also probably just a little bit chuffed that it's the first time we've profited on a player since the days of Sir Alex, as I understand it.

Trent, Salah and one of Lukaku / Ronaldo based on fixtures

if you mean the 11+ club, then 2. team value hasnt been built up sufficiently to sustain 3.

Is it stupid to move Bruno to Greenwood before price change?
Hesitant to make any moves this far out from deadline with international games still to play.
Like many Ings will go but have Barnes as well which feels like a bigger priority. Probably to Sarr
I know Leeds have pool next but feel like Bamford is the player to get for Leeds would just mean holding Ings for Chelsea or taking a hit

      I'm considering an early wildcard.

Just trying to position my enablers so I don't need to move too many around after the GW7 swing.

Fair. I’m concerned I don’t know enough right now to pull the wc trigger but it’s something to consider
Assumed I’d hold Sanchez for 7 weeks then swap keepers

Good move if Greenwood stays nailed on.

I'd want Bruno and Greenwood for the home game against Newcastle.

Will wait for press conference week on Thursday/Friday but plan is to get for Ings unless tempted to take hit for Ronaldo

The international break came just in time for him. He should be fit and raring to go against Burnley in two weeks' time.

How do we think Wolves will lineup with:

    - Return of Podence
    - Signing of Hwang

Yes. Pool have lost one game in the last 40 PL matches when he and Virg start together…BUT he hasn’t been able to put together long stretches of continuous games. If he can stay fit he offers value

Don't think anyone is looking to play him, they're fixtures do turn for the better though.

Yup this is the thing. Last 4.0 who can get you a 2 pointer in an emergency.

I ended up not going for the move.

I think this may be a rare case of fplstatistics being inaccurate. They've had Tsimikas on -100 for the last 3 days or so while on Fix he's been gradually going down from -30 ish to around -70 now. For DCL too, fplstatistics have had him hovering the 90 mark for the past few days while fix have him on 14.

Almost all the other numbers align quite well, but these seem like extreme cases in which an error has occured, I usually trust fplstatistics but based on transfer quantities I think fix is more accurate here

      Thanks for the heads up.
I don't use Fix, but I guess the fact that members supply their FPL password means it knows if people have deployed a WC this week, where fplstatistics relies on submissions to guess that information. So Fix should be more accurate?

This may be the case but even with that information, the current differences between the mentioned players is huge. I think there mustve been a mistake somehow

I don't want to transfer DCL in under an injury cloud, it'll be annoying if his price goes up before he is declared fit.

Suggestions on what to do here?

    TAA - Shaw - Dier - Ayling - White
    Salah - Jota - Barnes - Greenwood - Torres
    Ings - Antonio - Scarlett

    Ings & Barnes out??

Still would only want Jimenez for wolves attack or nobody
Gray seems ok but wouldn’t double with DCL
Bamford and Raph is good double up. Just like Sarr myself but both good

    Salah Bruno Greenwood Benrahma
    Toney Antonio Ings

    4m - Livramento Brownhill Tsimi

    1.5m ITB
