Scout Notes

Martinez and Buendia to miss Gameweek 4 as injuries and Covid also hit Villa

We continue our Scout Notes of the weekend’s Fantasy Premier League (FPL) matches with analysis of Aston Villa v Brentford.

For a briefer summary of Saturday’s action, check out our Scoreboard summary here.

ASTON VILLA 1-1 BRENTFORD

  • Goals: Emiliano Buendia (£6.4m) | Ivan Toney (£6.4m)
  • Assists: Danny Ings (£8.1m) | Pontus Jansson (£4.5m)
  • Bonus: Buendia x3, Jansson x2, Toney x1

BUENDIA SCORES AS INGS BAGS AN ASSIST

Emiliano Buendia (£6.4m) scored his first goal for Aston Villa in Saturday’s 1-1 draw against Brentford.

However, Dean Smith was forced into a late re-think ahead of the game, after it was revealed that John McGinn (£6.0m) and Jacob Ramsey (£4.5m) would miss out as they were following Covid protocols.

As if that was not enough, Tyrone Mings (£5.0m) was also ruled out with a rib injury and Ezri Konsa (£5.0m) picked up a knee problem during the game.

With so many absent, Villa struggled to create and had to turn to Ashley Young (£5.0m) in an unfamiliar central midfield role alongside Douglas Luiz (£4.5m) and youngster Carney Chukwuemeka (£4.5m).

The rejig also meant that Axel Tuanzebe (£4.5m) partnered Konsa at centre-half, while former Bees forward Ollie Watkins (£7.3m) also came on for his first minutes of the season.

Aston Villa’s average position map v Brentford in Gameweek 3, with Ashley Young (no. 18) deployed in a central midfield role

Danny Ings (£8.1m) bagged an assist to make it three attacking returns in three starts, though the fact he has managed to score two goals off of just four shots suggests that most FPL managers will be happy to move him on ahead of Gameweek 4, especially given Villa’s toughening schedule:

It’s also worth noting that Emiliano Martinez (£5.5m) and Buendia will both miss the Gameweek 4 clash with Chelsea as a result of their international commitments with Argentina.

The pair have agreed to make themselves available for the first two World Cup qualifying matches against Venezuela and Brazil, but will not take part in the third fixture against Bolivia, which means the duo will be available for the visit of Everton in Gameweek 5.

Mings has joined up with the England squad to assuage fears about his fitness but there have been no updates on Konsa as yet.

TONEY OFF THE MARK

Brentford continued their unbeaten start to the 2021/22 Premier League season at Villa Park, with Ivan Toney (£6.4m) netting the opener as he converted confidently from Pontus Jansson’s (£4.5m) flick-on.

“He’s shown in all three games he’s more than capable of playing in the Premier League with his link-up play, pressing and his ability to be in the right place with chances. Now he’s finally got his goal on the board, I expect to see even more from him. He’s a fantastic player.” – Thomas Frank on Ivan Toney

The Bees probably shaded it overall, and have adjusted well to life in the top tier, picking up a victory against Arsenal in their opening game and back-to-back draws away at Crystal Palace and now Villa.

David Raya (£4.5m), one of Thomas Frank’s key performers in the opening rounds, now sits joint-second in the goalkeeper standings on 17 points, having kept two clean sheets, produced two save points and a single bonus point.

[I’m] happy with most of the performance. We started the game brilliant at a difficult place to play. We were brave, pressed high and scored and I felt we were really on top of the game. Then one miscommunication and it gave them the chance.

In the second half I felt we started better and then it was more even in the last part of the game. I felt if there should have been a narrow winner it should have been us.

I would like us to be even braver. My message before every game is to go for a win, play forward and attack. I just probably need to keep reinforcing it.” – Thomas Frank

VILLA XI: Martinez, Cash, Konsa (Hause 89), Tuanzebe, Targett, Douglas Luiz, Chukwuemeka (Nakamba 63), Young (Watkins 79), Buendia, El Ghazi, Ings.

BRENTFORD XI: Raya, Ajer, Jansson, Pinnock, Canos, Norgaard, Janelt (Baptiste 89), Henry, Ghoddos (Wissa 66), Mbeumo (Jensen 80), Toney.

Which three man defence would you prefer medium term?

    a) DIAS Trent Reguilón (LIVRAMENTO Duffy)
    b) LAPORTE Trent Reguilón (COADY Duffy)

I think a Wolves 4.5M defender as first sub provides good cover for the whole outfield up till December, but Dias seems more nailed than Laporte and/or Chelsea's defenders?

Hard to comment without a bench, first XI looks OK, no TAA certainly stands out though. Personally I would pick 1 of Ronaldo or Lukaku.

Lukaku to a budget striker and a defender to TAA.

There is certain countries that if someone visits they need to isolate for two weeks when they return to UK. So depends where the international is

His form hasn't been great past 2 games.
Just have to look at how he performs in a Portugal shirt (with Ronaldo), and he's also off penalties / free-kicks.

      1. GreennRed
        • 12 Years
        2 years, 7 months ago

Portugal coach not getting the best from the array of talent he has. Too dependant on Ronaldo. Class and all as he still is it made Portugal too predictable when they should have gone further in the Euros. Don't think Solksjaer will make the same mistake. He'll work to the team's strengths and not look for Ronaldo everyvtime. Bruno still a good pick.

    3. waldo666
      • 13 Years
      2 years, 7 months ago

Not really sure, some thoughts below. The way I'm set up Bruno would have to make way to accommodate Ronaldo, whether that's straight away, after watching a couple of matches or not at all, remains to be seen.

    4. Postman Ty
      • 9 Years

No penalties, significantly less appealing. Literally half of his goals last season. Questions over his position and their formation.

  13. waldo666
    • 13 Years
    2 years, 7 months ago

Sensible thing is probably to wait and see with Ronaldo especially with GW4 coming quickly after the IB but I'm going to be mighty tempted.

Should I decide to go that way and especially if Firmino is indeed out for a stretch, this looks like the best way for me, thoughts?

Bruno and Ings to Jota and Ronaldo

Having Ronaldo against Newcastle (h) is obviously a great fixture.
Only concern is whether he actually features / needs settling in.
Looking at how Sancho is, and with Messi slowly rolled in, might could be better to take the prudent option and see how he is first couple of games.

Hard to say, but I'm just going with Lukaku on WC.

I'm eyeing up the Bruno + Ings to Jota + Ronaldo switch as well. Just feel like Ronaldo will be the better UTD option for the season being the main man and most likely on pens.

My only concern is that Ronaldo won't start straight away vs Newcastle, I think its better to just hold Bruno this week and reassess after a few GWs of info.

Could always go with Kaku this week as a place holder for Ronaldo

Yeah can't see any GK double rising but doesn't hurt to leave him there.

Kicking myself on Gray as had him as 5th mid... until about 2hrs before deadline when I switched to Mbeumo.

A double rise might be partial compensation for the missed goals.

I have Mbuemo too, he could have easily started how Gray has - in fact probably likely due to being OOP.

    Ronaldo Antonio Toney

    White, Coady, Obafemi, Foster

at the moment yes, and good value at 5, when CL starts feel one of Gomez/Konate will partner VVD. Just a risk of injury

I can see the appeal for Matip as he’s good value when fit but he’s never been able to stay for for a season so feels like a future transfer waiting but you do have 2 playing on the bench so could work

Have you considered Lukaku + 1.0 extra ITB to captain this week vs. Villa (missing Martinez) then swap for CR7 for GW5? I know it's booking in a transfer but Rom vs. Villa could be deadly. I suppose CR7 vs, Newcastle could be too but are we sure he starts/plays 90 and any chemistry issues?

I always keep thinking is Trent a must have or no. Despite of being full back, he is one of Liverpool playmaker which makes his value worth like a midfielder.

    Sanchez, Steele
    TAA, Shaw, Ayling, Tsimi, Amartey
    Salah, Bruno, Benrahma, Greenwood, Brownhill
    Ings, Toney, Antonio

    2FT 1.3M ITB.

Ings to DCL only and save 1FT? Or is there anything worth to change?

Tsimi drop is coming fast, maybe a change there if you're worried. Nice team mate I have a very similar one right now but eyeing up a WC to restructure and get access to Lukaku/CR7

I'm ranked around 70,000 so have had a good start. But getting really tempted to pull a WC and restructure. I've made 7 changes here. Can play 3-4-3 or 4-3-3. How does this look:

    Sanchez - Steele
    TAA - Shaw - Semedo - (Ayling - Aarons)
    Bruno - Greenwood - Raphina - Fornals - (Brownhill)
    Lukaku(C) - DCL - Antonio

£1.1M in the bank. Would be able to flick between Bruno/Salah and Rom/CR7

Not really sold on Sanchez. Any advice on Keepers?

    Cheers!

Like it. I'm thinking the same myself. Was going to wait until GW7 but the main difference would be getting triple Chelsea and moving utd out. I figure I could do that with frees so maybe better to move now

I have done exactly this. Was going to wait until GW7 as my team is pretty solid but I would only be waiting to get Chelsea players in. A Chelsea defender and Lukaku v Villa could be great. I have played my WC now and the team is better and affordable now where in GW7 it would not be.

What does your team look pre wildcard? I think there's much more we can learn over the next two GWs that could give you an advantage in holding.

        Thanks

        Sanchez - Steele
TAA - Shaw - Coufal (Semedo - Amartey)
        Bruno - Salah - Greenwood - Benrahma - (Brownhill)
        DCL - Antonio - (Obafemi)

I would definitely not be burning your wildcard on that team, I am assuming you will be fielding Semedo yes? You are in a very strong position to even avoid wildcarding GW7 and taking a hit instead.

Salah, Coufal, Benhrama -------> Lukaku, Raphina, Fornals is essentially the on field impacts you are making with Ayling as your depth player.

Salah over the next 3 is arguably the better option over Lukaku. I think Benhrama to Raphina is a viable option next week if you can fund it, but no merit in a switch straight to Fornals for the sake of a wildcard. Fornals plays the false 9 when Antonio doesn't play right? so maybe they interchange between Europa and Prem matches? Some info you can wait on I guess.

Thanks mate - I should have mentioned I did Ings & Tsimikas to DCL & Semedo already this week, which were 2 FT.

Probably overthinking things - you know how it goes early on and in the IB too!!

My plan was Bruno to Salah GW5, Luk to CR7 GW6. Getting too tricky I suppose, asking for a few hits thinking like that.

Let the people behind you take the risky choices to try catch up. Bruno probably very much on the chopping block if he blanks again you’d think, especially seeing Ronaldo comes in GW5 latest and takes pens away from him

What are the merits of WC in GW7 over GW4? 7 was my original plan but when I draft something it looks similar to what I'd put in place now, just with a couple more Chelsea. I think a WC now with a plan to move for a Chelsea mid and defender by GW 7 could pay dividends

Some of the things that I would like to see first includes Ronaldo's impact in Bruno, Varane's impact on Man Utd defense, rotation of Chelsea and Man City assets during UCL weeks, Benrahma's form

punt on Leeds players for new, WHM, WAT.

            Sanchez*,
            Webster*, TAA, Shaw, Livramento, Omobamidele*
            Salah, Bruno*, Mahrez*, Raphinha, Benhrama,
            Antonio, Ings*, Scarlett*

Think I'd look to move on 5-7 players on WC and I've only got 1FT this week. Team isn't in bad shape overall but if be able to attack wolves and Leeds good fixtures better and set up to get ronaldo depending on how he goes against Newcastle (lukaku + cash) or put him straight in if it sounds like he'll start

I think you're pretty safe to stay as is, but I wouldn't totally rule out an aggressive early WC. I prefer to wait and see for United and I've brought in Lukaku but waiting for GW7 for 1-2 others. Leeds you won't want for GW4, and do Wolves really have any players you want (please don't say Traore)?

I m planning to WC in GW 5/6 and not wait till GW 7. As u mentioned, by that time I would need only Chelsea assets which I can get with the next couple of transfers. GW 4 seems too soon for me, as there are way too many variables and I would like to assess first before hitting the button.

      Mahrez > Torres
      Toney > DCL

I'd be tempted by that although DCL's injury news and Torres not being totally nailed as of yet would worry me but it'd be tempting for sure.
