Scout Notes

Martinez and Buendia to miss Gameweek 4 as injuries and Covid also hit Villa

We continue our Scout Notes of the weekend’s Fantasy Premier League (FPL) matches with analysis of Aston Villa v Brentford.

For a briefer summary of Saturday’s action, check out our Scoreboard summary here.

ASTON VILLA 1-1 BRENTFORD

  • Goals: Emiliano Buendia (£6.4m) | Ivan Toney (£6.4m)
  • Assists: Danny Ings (£8.1m) | Pontus Jansson (£4.5m)
  • Bonus: Buendia x3, Jansson x2, Toney x1

BUENDIA SCORES AS INGS BAGS AN ASSIST

Emiliano Buendia (£6.4m) scored his first goal for Aston Villa in Saturday’s 1-1 draw against Brentford.

However, Dean Smith was forced into a late re-think ahead of the game, after it was revealed that John McGinn (£6.0m) and Jacob Ramsey (£4.5m) would miss out as they were following Covid protocols.

As if that was not enough, Tyrone Mings (£5.0m) was also ruled out with a rib injury and Ezri Konsa (£5.0m) picked up a knee problem during the game.

With so many absent, Villa struggled to create and had to turn to Ashley Young (£5.0m) in an unfamiliar central midfield role alongside Douglas Luiz (£4.5m) and youngster Carney Chukwuemeka (£4.5m).

The rejig also meant that Axel Tuanzebe (£4.5m) partnered Konsa at centre-half, while former Bees forward Ollie Watkins (£7.3m) also came on for his first minutes of the season.

Aston Villa’s average position map v Brentford in Gameweek 3, with Ashley Young (no. 18) deployed in a central midfield role

Danny Ings (£8.1m) bagged an assist to make it three attacking returns in three starts, though the fact he has managed to score two goals off of just four shots suggests that most FPL managers will be happy to move him on ahead of Gameweek 4, especially given Villa’s toughening schedule:

It’s also worth noting that Emiliano Martinez (£5.5m) and Buendia will both miss the Gameweek 4 clash with Chelsea as a result of their international commitments with Argentina.

The pair have agreed to make themselves available for the first two World Cup qualifying matches against Venezuela and Brazil, but will not take part in the third fixture against Bolivia, which means the duo will be available for the visit of Everton in Gameweek 5.

Mings has joined up with the England squad to assuage fears about his fitness but there have been no updates on Konsa as yet.

TONEY OFF THE MARK

Brentford continued their unbeaten start to the 2021/22 Premier League season at Villa Park, with Ivan Toney (£6.4m) netting the opener as he converted confidently from Pontus Jansson’s (£4.5m) flick-on.

“He’s shown in all three games he’s more than capable of playing in the Premier League with his link-up play, pressing and his ability to be in the right place with chances. Now he’s finally got his goal on the board, I expect to see even more from him. He’s a fantastic player.” – Thomas Frank on Ivan Toney

The Bees probably shaded it overall, and have adjusted well to life in the top tier, picking up a victory against Arsenal in their opening game and back-to-back draws away at Crystal Palace and now Villa.

David Raya (£4.5m), one of Thomas Frank’s key performers in the opening rounds, now sits joint-second in the goalkeeper standings on 17 points, having kept two clean sheets, produced two save points and a single bonus point.

[I’m] happy with most of the performance. We started the game brilliant at a difficult place to play. We were brave, pressed high and scored and I felt we were really on top of the game. Then one miscommunication and it gave them the chance.

In the second half I felt we started better and then it was more even in the last part of the game. I felt if there should have been a narrow winner it should have been us.

I would like us to be even braver. My message before every game is to go for a win, play forward and attack. I just probably need to keep reinforcing it.” – Thomas Frank

VILLA XI: Martinez, Cash, Konsa (Hause 89), Tuanzebe, Targett, Douglas Luiz, Chukwuemeka (Nakamba 63), Young (Watkins 79), Buendia, El Ghazi, Ings.

BRENTFORD XI: Raya, Ajer, Jansson, Pinnock, Canos, Norgaard, Janelt (Baptiste 89), Henry, Ghoddos (Wissa 66), Mbeumo (Jensen 80), Toney.

    Schmeichel (4.5)
    TAA, Shaw, Christensen (Coady, Dier)
    Salah Raphina Trincao Jota Torres
    Ronaldo Antonio (4.5)

    Shaw ---> James GW7/when ready

My opinion - Too much spent on defense. Trincao to 4.5 mid. Use balance funds to upgrade 4.5 striker as lot of good options there.

Rly would like a Wolves attacker though, and Trinaco has looked decent.

I also fear I may have spent a bit much on defence, but I kind of see it as a strong base that really doesn't need much changes for medium to long term. Its all set up. Also lends to rotate to 442 if I need when Jota/Torres are benched.

So, can fully focus on my transfers being made for my front 7.

Against Leicester, Spurs and United yes.
But they've got wat, BRE, sou, NEW, avl and lee up next with a bunch more favourable ones after too. I expect that to change. They've looked good.

All the best then. This season I have planned to focus all my funds entirely on my starting XI post the 1st WC. That's y I used up my BB to not worry about rotating players or benchings.

For e.g. I would have Jota in my team, only if Firmino is injured. Once he is back, I will just sell him. With Torres, the moment he starts to get benched in the PL, I will sell him. Till then get him when he is in form. I m sure this issue would be with only few of the players, as the rest of the starting XI would be nailed

        0.5m ITB for Ronaldo @ 12.5m

        Easy Dier-->White or Schmeichel-->Sanchez if he's 13m

dunno if Christensen keeps playing and Leicester's def seems quite shaky... would prefer 343 as there are quite a few strikers around 8m - rest is ofc nice

Looks to be in favour atm and Chelsea don't look like they'll sign Kounde. But defintiely have factored in rotation thus a very strong bench with great fixtures.

Would you rather Sanchez in goal with Brighton?

Agreed. Considering DCL but means I'd have to drop Jota and downgrade Schmeichel to Sanchez not entirely convinced its worth it.

No standout, still think Sanchez is a good pick due to his price.
I‘d rather drop Torres than Jota or downgrade Trincao and a bit of your defence to switch to 343.

If on a WC, who would be the nailed on players you'd want and build a team around?

    My list would be:

    Antonio
    Benrahama
    Salah
    TAA
    Ronaldo/Lukaku
    DCL?

Any other player you think which would make your WC team for sure?

Agree about Benrahma, they're supposedly signing Nikola Vlasic and Moyes has made it quite obvious he isn't 100% sold on Benrahma with multiple "he's playing very well but..." type statements. I have Benrahma and I'm not getting rid of him, but if I were on a wildcard I'd be a bit worried.

Will Ben be dropped even after the spectacular start?
Didn't watch the full games, so the question is, was he just good FPL wise or was he actually playing well for the team as well?

        1. RogDog_jimmy

nah he has been legit good.
The defense has let us down - our CBs - so Zouma will make a big difference hopefully.

Eventually there will be rotation through the midfield, and Vlasic will help that (assuming he comes - not getting too far ahead of myself).

Benrahma and Fornals have been both playing wide and through the middle, so there's flexibility for all of them. Bowen has played up front before.

Going to be hard for Bennie to keep it up but he's a 6.0m player, so he's already way over-delivering. A return every other game is solid enough for his price really.

I've had him from the start. I suspect he will be rotated eventually; I'm hoping I get 2 or 3 more weeks before it's a problem. I don't think I'd be getting him in now.

    Thoughts on this WC

    Sanchez
    Ayling alonso TAA
    Torres harrison salah havertz traore
    Ronaldo DCL

    Bench: foster, williams, livramento, obafemi

Thoughts on dropping havertz and dcl to bring in lukalu + another striker
Maybe antonio if i downgrade salah to mane

      • 3 Years

      I'd get Antonio somehow.
      Over DCL.
Or downgrade Havertz to a 4.5 & go with 3x forwards.
Maybe with the change from that you can get Torres to Mount?

Dan James looks like he's moving to Leeds. He's 6m, same price as Harrison. I wonder if he rotates with Harrison, Raphinha, or both.

If he was a bad option when starting (at times) for United do we really think he will be worth anything as a rotation risk at Leeds?

Players take some time to get accustomed to Beilsa's system. Even if he starts being rotated with Harrisson and Raphinha, it will be after some time, not immediately?

I always planned to take advantage of Brighton s opening fixtures until GW8. It was initially tricky to choose the right 5m keeper pre-season. Options included Henderson, Pickford, Meslier and Sa. By the time I look to upgrade, the choice should be clearer.

        1. Boberella
          • 7 Years

This makes sense. Although I started with Martinez, so its a good time to jump ship now with him missing GW4 and Villas fixtures and defensive issues. Sa seems the best option for me. Looked good so far. Getting save pts. Wolves def should only improve. Cracking fixture run.

Can TAA be Dropped in GW7?
If you go with 2 Chelsea defenders there doesn't seem to be a place for TAA unless you go 4 atb.

Or is 4 atb viable and TAA can be better than a 8M midfielder GW7 onwards?

    1. Andy_Social
      • 11 Years

I'm willing to drop TAA to the bench for one or two games in the season - even for Livramento. But I wouldn't sell him.

If you bring in Chelsea defenders you need to prepare for rotation. Again, having Trent gives you security.

Tough to say for sure. Trent with CS is a must have. I would suspect with vvd the chance of cs is very high. He’s now more nailed than robbo, with Tsim impressing.

TAA is a season keeper regardless of fixtures imo. I hv no plans to sell him for the course of the season unless he picks up an injury. Reece James should be good enough imo. If u r targeting a CB from Chelsea to join him, then I rather keep TAA

TAA is a season keeper and starter regardless of fixture. He can generate points in so many different ways Cs, bps, assists.

Nope. Rotation risk with Thiago Silva but has started all the opening fixtures and they look good. @5m I think he's worth a shout with a good bench.

Pretty confused tbh, struggling to get hauls from midfielders 😀

Sosa has been a stupid pick, bought in GW2, zero pts and value loss in 2 games 😀

Haha. Picked Sosa as star player in gw 1 for that lovely haul.

Kostic, Stindl & Weghorst have been a stupid pick for me in midfield.

Will sell Kostic for Kainz & use the cash to get Mbabu.

                  Kainz, Kimmich, Grifo, Stindl
                  with some cash itb.

                  Sold Bakker for Scally(cheapie).

                  Gonna get Sabitzer soon tho.

                  Attack- > Lewandowski, Haaland, Weghorst

Yeah, currently have that frontline and not willing to change.

Transfers are likely to be used on defense, midfield and GK change. Zentner has done fine till now but he relies on CS.

                    Will Stanisic continue to start?

Probably but I picked Alphonso Davies. When Pavard returns, Stanisic will lose his place in the starting xi(Probably a safe pick for now). Think I should also monitor that get him in 🙂

I have been rolling with Davies-Stanisic double up. Was close to getting Ulreich as well after Neuer news, luckily was 0.1 short.

Dropped Rousillon for Gurreiro this week 😀

As of now, I'm happy to be 8k, not sure if its good.

Think I need to sell Stindl( definitely on the chopping board) & get another goalie too.

8k OR is just ok. I’ll make good use of this wildcard, not too many changes tho

Really liking the look of my WC more without Trent. If Firmino is ruled out for a substantial amount of time i think dropping TAA for Jota is the move. My current WC front line without TAA looks like:

This is similar to my WC front 7 but I’ve gone big front 8 (to counter Pep roulette!):

It does. I’m not set on this. But I had Mahrez for the first three GWs and felt the burn of Pep. Raph might miss GW4 and Benny could become a rotation risk in the near future so an easy downgrade at the time.

    Ings, Antonio(Scarlet)

    TAA / Coufal / Livra
    Salah / Bruno / Raph / Benny
    Antonio / Ings / Toney

    Forster / Gilmour / Tsmi / Manquillo

Will do Ings > DCL if no WC,

    Thx
