Cristiano Ronaldo and the best time to play the first Wildcard in FPL

It’s been a whirlwind start to the new Fantasy Premier League (FPL) season, with the transfer window mirroring the frenzy that we have seen on the pitch.

So, with that in mind, in this article, I will be sharing my thoughts on what we have seen so far and what lies ahead.

THE RONALDO QUESTION

I can’t start this article without addressing the arrival of one of the greatest players to have ever graced the football pitch – Cristiano Ronaldo (£12.5m).

There have been some concerns that the Portuguese powers might be waning but as the table below shows, he has maintained his consistency despite the fact that he turns 37 in February 2022.

Portugal play three games over the international break of which two are World Cup qualifiers.

The first of those happened last night – a 2-1 win over Republic of Ireland which saw Ronaldo bag a brace of goals and become the all-time international record goalscorer.

However, he also picked up a late booking, which means that he is suspended and does not need to travel to Azerbaijan for Portugal’s second World Cup qualifier, which is due to take place on Tuesday. As a consequence, he has been released early from international duty.

So, I have full confidence that Ole Gunnar Solsjkaer will start Ronaldo in front of a packed Old Trafford in Gameweek 4.

Some have pointed out how Lionel Messi was eased off the bench in his first game at Paris Saint-Germain but Ronaldo’s case is very different. For Messi, it was the first transfer of his career, while Ronaldo is ‘returning home’ and Solsjkaer, in my opinion, is not a manager who is too stringent about players ‘adapting’ to his system. So, who makes way to accommodate Ronaldo in our FPL sides?

So, good luck and enjoy the international break.

We will be discussing Wildcard picks for those of you who have already pushed the button on the Gameweek 4 pod of The FPL Wire.

    Great stuff as always Zoph.

Is a -8 really worth it if when I am going WC in Gw7 anyway?. 3 Gws

Yes I will have more info and wouldn’t be booking in transfers. Is this alone worth a -8.

    Hmm

      Thank you

I think it depends on the players you are bringing in and selling for the hit, as well as the players you are buying/selling in 8.

I want to jump off united/west ham etc in 8 and right now there aren't enough players I need gone from my squad to justify it personally

It’s confirmation bias. He’s decided that what he is doing & it helps him justify the -8. We all do it once we’ve made a decision. It’s a human failing.

I think a lot of people are going to be priced out over next few weeks of the team they want. It’s no bad thing to get on top of this early. Sort a few issues and get in Ronaldo who will go up by 0.2-0.4 in next two GWs

Priced out of who? Those that aren't wildcarding will still be bringing in Ronaldo for Newcastle I would assume. (Unless they went early on Lukaku)

Most of these wildcard teams are just changing their bench players and adding Wolves players. Doesn't seen much value in the changes. They mostly still contain TAA, Shaw, Salah, DCL, Antonio, Benrahma, Sanchez, Jota/Greenwood.

The point about the Man United and West Ham fixture swing is really relevant. Assuming most of us have 4 or 5 players in those teams. Will have to eat some tough game weeks if they can't be removed all at once.

Team value will be really important with so many premium options this year. So the cheaper playable options will be important to get on early.

If you look at the price sites they’ve got a lot of players like Shaw, Bruno & Leeds players dropping. Ronaldo will increase once his lock has dropped. This will make it harder to get the team everybody will want. Not impossible. I can see why some are playing the wildcard. I haven’t yet as very luckily selected the early differentials but can see why some have wildcarded early.

I think those saying we'll all be priced out are sincere but mistaken. My GW9 WC last season had 3 premiums (Salah, KDB, Bruno) and still had room for double MCI defence, Grealish as 4th mid, a playable 8th attacker, and even a second playing GK.

Granted, the prices of premiums are a bit higher this year, but by cutting out some of the fat, it will still be possible to get to them.

I ondon't think last year can be compared to this year simply because there are so many more options this year.

Obviously the premiums, but also guys like Antonio or DCL who are fit and in very nice form. There just feels like more options are available up front than in year's past.

-8’s as are rarely worth it maybe if you keep players long term. You are only going 3 gws! Consider other cheaper options playing fpl like snooker is the right way. Think a few shots ahead and always leave plenty of options giving the easiest shot.

-8 is too much imo. but can pay if you captain ronaldo each and every week, if he gets 2-3 goals , that will be ok. but at the same time bruno and others might easily match points.

    Got lost on last page.
What u think of this WC team lads?

    Sanchez
    TAA Dier Christensen
    Jota Greenwood Gray Torres
    Ronaldo Lukaku Antonio

Subs: Benrahma, Ayling, Livramento. 0.1mil ITB.

Going Salahless atm is a nice punt, imho. Think its best to have Luakaku and ROnaldo before all get them wc gw 6,7,8...
Wanted def from Chelsea. Was thinking Coufal also, but went for Christensen.

Any suggestions? Your opinion is respected!

Think its not a teemplate team atm only. Will become.
Wanted to trade Antonio and take Dennis as sub so Benrahma can play, but scared tbh.
    What u think ?

Do you really want to bench Gray or Benrahma? Downgrade & upgrade defence. Christensen to James (I know he’s suspended).

Midfield has too many rotation risks.
      Greenwood, Jota, Torres.
You have Ben, but I would consider getting one more guaranteed starter. Maybe move Torres, as you'd need LFC cover imo.You could use the money from Ben to upgrade perhaps.

Gray a bit of a gamble, but can be replaced easily by Sarr/Raph etc.

      The rest is fine.

    Good article.

My one question is does Fernandes really need Fred & McTom to make his runs into the box? On MOTD2, it was shown that he was looking for a ball over the top as part of a front four, leaving nothing in the 10 area for Pogba to hit. That was one of the reasons the pundits felt United didn’t progress the ball quickly.

Are we not afraid that he will struggle against Wolves who ain't looking bad defensively?

Sure, but the next 2 could be golden and even though wolves are getting a lot of love on here they’ve still lost their first 3 and not scored a goal

It's a concern, but consider that Watford and Sarr looked good their only other home game. The other two were away to Spurs and Brighton. They are home against Wolves.

I know this week and GW7/8 are the most popular for prospective wildcards at the moment but any thoughts on a GW15 wildcard?

That's when United, City and West Ham jump up towards the top of the season ticker again while Leeds and Wolves (who many will invest in over the coming weeks) drop to the bottom. Crucially, Chelsea at that point face tough fixtures in West Ham and Leeds before (if I'm not mistaken) two likely blanks in GW17 & GW18 because of the club world cup.

Obviously that means having to navigate the GW7/8 fixture turn without a wildcard. Switching United players to Chelsea players will be your prime focus at that point but I'm not sure it's that difficult to prepare the rest of your team in advance of that fixture turn.

Looking at GW7-GW14, Wolves and Leeds are obviously the key teams other than Chelsea as they're both in the top four on the season ticker across that period. But they're also teams you could happily spend your fts investing in *before* GW7, with Wolves' fixtures turning this week and Leeds' turning next week.

Furthermore there are players currently in our teams who are easy holds for the GW7-14 period, such as Livramento (second best defensive fixtures between GW5-GW14), City players (their fixtures improve from GW8 and many are bringing in Torres now as is), Liverpool players (who seem reasonable holds with mid-table fixtures) and even Arsenal players for anyone with White or ESR on their bench (third best fixtures GW7-13).

So if you were to target Wolves/Leeds players over the next couple of weeks, I think you could quite comfortably navigate the GW7/8 fixture turn with fts and perhaps a -4, saving your wildcard for the fixture turn in GW15 when most will have played their wildcards already.

Wildcards can be whenever you feel is best to play it. There a lot of top managers who always play it before GW6. There are others who play it later & get the rewards. There is no optimum time to use it.

I was saying something similar above

Getting Ronaldo this week to make the lukaku move easy and moving Bruno to a 6-6.5 mid to allow a Chelsea defender to come in during 5 or 6

For me this gives me lukaku Chelsea defender Raph and Ayling before 7 so if I can do this not sure I’ll need to wc then

Could all go up in smoke of course 🙂

      1. Threat Level Midnight
        • 5 Years

Literally, my exact thinking moving to 7.

I'll have done Sarr/CR7/Williams>Lukaku/Raph/James by week 7 and already have Ayling. Until it all blows up in my face when CR7 has 5 goals through those 3 matches. Lol

This is the thing for me too. Pretty much all the players I want to bring in now are (other than Ronaldo) players I'm happy to keep for GW7 and beyond.

So I'm not sure there's as much value in a GW7 wildcard as I initially thought and (given a lot of us have similar teams) other people may be in the same boat.

Good comment. Completly for got about the Club World Cup. I think Chelsea defense is solid apart from the occasional hiccup but Tuchel has made his mark now. They look a unit to me. It looks like people chase the price rises and take hits to have a strong finish or trust their gut or proven performers. It is a game which is frustrating but so sweet when you have a good week

Thanks for this. Depends on the international break too but so far not many injuries so teams are looking solid.

GW15 is just before Xmas chaos so it could be a good time reevaluate and ensure we have a full squad of reliable players.

Barnes has been awful watched his games. Villa attacking stats poor but Ings only needs one chance. Barnes would need 100 before he is subbed at 60.

We are agreed then. Barnes it is.
I have also seen some of his play, and he has been poor.

For me it's B, but more because I see Ings as a makeweight for Ronaldo (or DCL etc).

Barnes to Sarr/Raphi/Traore isn't nearly as urgent. Gw5 will do.

    Which option:

    A. Bruno Ings to Torres and Ronaldo
    B. Mahrez Ings to Greenwood and DCL (wait 2 weeks to bring in Ronaldo)

    Team
    Sanchez (Begovic)
    TAA Shaw White (Livramento Tsmikas)
    Bruno Salah Mahrez Raphinha Benrahma
    Antonio Ings (Scarlett)

Looking to go a bit off template with one of the following options. Which do you like best for the next 3 GW?

    A. Son (cry, CHE, ars), Lukaku (AVL, tot, MCI), Jota (lee, CRY, bre)
    B. Bruno, Ronaldo (NEW, whu, AVL), Gray (BUR, avl, NOR)
    C. Bruno, Lukaku, Gray - leaves 1.0m ITB

Captain would be Lukaku/Ronaldo in GW4, Salah in GW5, Ronaldo in B or otherwise Salah in GW6.

You could easily have Greenwood for Jota.

But I think we need to see how Man U line up with Ronaldo.

Help - I already have made -8 transfers and now have 2x red subs with the other 2 not even likely to start. I also have 2.5itb.

Worth the wildcard or keep -8 and save

        Sanchez (Foster)
        TAA, Shaw, Livramento (Manquillo Amartey)
        Salah, Torres, Jota, Raph, Benrahma
        Ronaldo, Antonio, (Obafemi)

Reason I didn't add it as I asked for help before and I think because my post was too long everyone zoomed past it ha! Got 2.3itb not 2.5

It could work either way. I’d be tempted to wildcard purely because you’ve taken a -8 already and need to sort out a few extra issues.

Thanks man. I'll just go ahead with it. The main question now is whether to fit in Lukaku or not. May just 'compensate' with a def or mount

Personally I feel Lukaku weakens the team too much (alongside Ron & Salah). You can only captain one of them. Downgrading to say DCL would give you a lot of extra funds to focus improving team elsewhere with money saved.

Ron & Lukaku tandem really well. Ron GW4-6, Luk GW7-12/14, Ron GW12/14 onwards or even Kane GW12 onwards

Zoph, always love your considered thinking. However, given that most who are going to pull the pin on their wildcard over the break will have, it’d have been great to see your WC draft if you had gone wild. Maybe you could post in the reply here?

Already looking at -4….. furthermore is it Worth taking a hit on something like Ayling > rudiger or 5.5 defender ?

I can wait a week but it will mean starting Ayling against Liverpool when I already own salah, Trent and Raph

Sure why not. Torres has the Pep Roulette issue but at that price point it shouldn't be detrimental to your team if he doesn't play

    Another very tempting WC draft:
    Sanchez (Steele)
TAA - Semedo - Tierney (Duffy, Livra)
Salah - Jota - Greenwood - Traore (Sissoko)
    Antonio - Ronaldo - DCL

Come GW7: DCL, Jota or Greenwood and TAA out for Lukaku, 6.0 mid and Rudiger/James/Chilwell in.

  29. MESSINHO
    • 7 Years
    2 years, 7 months ago

    Sanchez
    TAA - Shaw - White
    Salah - Bruno - Greenwood - Barnes
    Ings - Antonio - Toney

Subs: Steele - Livramento - Brownhill - Ayling

    2 FT, 0.1 ITB

Gonna wait for international games to finish for sure, but barring any injuries etc., I'll probably do one of the moves below. Which one would you prefer?

    A) Bruno + Ings -> Jota (Torres if Firmino is fit) + Ronaldo
    B) Bruno + Ings + Toney -> Gray + DCL + Ronaldo (-4)

    Cheers guys!
