Fantasy Premier League (FPL) have revealed that managers will be given an extra Free Hit (FH) chip from Gameweek 20 onwards.

The announcement is a reaction to a chaotic last few weeks in which Covid-19 has severely disrupted the football programme, with 10 Premier League fixtures falling prey to the pandemic.

A hastily arranged Double Gameweek 22 (and possibly a Double Gameweek 21, as well) is expected, following Tuesday’s news about FA Cup replays being shelved to accommodate the fixture backlog.

Managers who have not played their Free Hit ahead of Gameweek 20 will not lose their first chip and instead have two available to them.

Free Hits are unable to use in consecutive Gameweeks, however: after the chip is activated, your squad will return to its previous state for the following Gameweek.

READ MORE: Our beginner’s guide to chips and Blank/Double Gameweeks

WHEN TO USE THE EXTRA FREE HIT CHIP?

Thoughts will immediately turn to the much-touted Double Gameweek 22 which, lest we forget, hasn’t actually been confirmed yet.

With 13 Premier League fixtures outstanding (another three have been called off due to a clash with the FIFA Club World Cup or inclement weather), however, the abandonment of the FA Cup replays is effectively as good as confirmation that it will happen.

While we haven’t yet seen the additional fixtures for Double Gameweek 22, playing a Free Hit then will also mean that the decision on whether or not to sell Mohamed Salah (£13.1m) may be made easier. FPL’s leading points-scorer will miss (at least) Gameweeks 22 and 23 while he is representing Egypt at the Africa Cup of Nations, so deploying a Free Hit in the former would mean that he need only be benched in one Gameweek before his return from Cameroon. That, of course, is under the assumption that he doesn’t miss more domestic action at a pre-tournament training camp.

Blank Gameweek 30 will also likely be a popular target for one of the Free Hit chips: there is a clash with the FA Cup quarter-finals that weekend, with no possible chance of postponed fixtures being moved to the following Gameweek as an international break then takes place.

THE FFSCOUT COMMUNITY’S INITIAL REACTION

“Guessing 90% of active managers will be on FH in GW22 now and saving the other for later in the season.” – Revival

“I’ve been on a Free Hit 21/Wildcard (WC) 22 plan for a while.

“This just seals it. FH and Bench Boost (BB) for the major Double Gameweeks (DGWs) from cups, Triple Captain (TC) in the minor DGWs for the likes of Liverpool, City, Son and Chelsea wing-backs.” – Ze_Austin

“Makes sense to go for GW22 if that’s the big DGW. Although sure more thought is needed… could an early WC and BB in 22 be the way to go and use two FHs for the doubles later in the season?” – Pat Bonner

“Clearly good to have extra FH but wondering now how best to use first WC in GW20: whether to set the team up for 22 with an eye on future fixtures (if it’s a double) and have two FHs to use later in the season or set up for longer period post-22 and use FH in 22.” – dunas_dog

“It’s just making the game easier for people who don’t plan. That’s two DGWs handed to everyone on a plate.” – Wild Rover

“Not sure what to feel about this news. I have been badly burned with player no-shows over recent weeks and have been carefully prepping my squad to maximise potential DGWs. All that planning seems a waste now with a 2nd free hit being announced and I feel disadvantaged. Rules should not change mid-season” – MrBadger

“I think it merits discussion: the case for the extra FH actually *helping* those managers who have not already used theirs. The argument hinges on three points:

– Many of the high-scoring players from BGW18 were highly owned anyway. I would argue that there was not much advantage from playing it creatively, it only made sense to play it to make up the numbers, meaning using a hit to put out a template-y team that some managers were lucky enough to be able to field with a FT or a -4. So a lot of managers have played a FH to break even.

– We are almost certain to have more than one DGW between now and the end of the season, especially if more games get postponed. We may get triple GWs. There will also likely be Blank Gameweeks which could hurt more than BGW18. Arsenal, Liverpool and City played in the BGW, what if we had a BGW with not many owned players?

– Extra FHs mean that BGWs and DGWs are less likely to have to be factored into second-half wildcards. This means that those who have not played their FH will be better able to wildcard into teams which will see them through the standard Gameweeks in between blanks and doubles.

Following on from this, then, those with two FHs left have, potentially, more points to play for than those who have already played FH, as long as the possible gains from the future outweigh the average gain from playing FH in GW18 (and I think they do).” – Make Arrows Green Again

Huge advantaged for people already used it.
They said 2 better than 1 but FH is more important in dgw, 2nd fh in normal gw is nothing

        I don't think that's true.

It's an advantage for whoever used it in GW18 *only* if the points they managed to make up from having done so (I'm guessing an average of around 25 points) is greater than the extra points on offer from having two FHs to cover two DGWS (or a combination of DGWs and BGWs) later in the season.

I think there is more potential in two future FHs than one future and one past/banked FH, so I think the addition of the extra one will only help those managers who already did well during the Covid postponement period, and especially so if they are engaged managers who pay attention and plan for things like blanks and doubles. The 'casuals' celebrate the extra FH (which is not to say I think if you have played it already you're a casual, it's just bad luck) but all this chip does is help those who already have an advantage to pull further ahead.

Generally agree with your point although the first part about weighing up the FH gw 18 value against using 2 across 2 dgws is more complicated, because those without FHs may be inclined to disrupt their teams for dgws, in doing so they can cause damage to their scorelines in

...the weeks surrounding dgws. So it's not as straightforward as comparing the round scores against each other

But for those of us that haven't used it yet, we now have two opportunities to maximise fixtures without taking hits or permanently losing players we will want to get back afterwards.

Not a bad position to be in at all, in my opinion.

There was always a likelihood of FPL Towers doing something along these lines. You might be able to derive more benefit from this than someone who's not been so savvy. At least it wasn't a wildcard.

Yeah, you’ve been hard done by there. It probably helps the people who have been least hit by the existing postponements more. Or those who have used free hit. I don’t think this helps everyone equally, so it’s just created more imbalance

Not really as the second wildcard can be used in a later DGW leaving FH for a BGW, which is often rubbish anyway. Not a great move and devalues the game further imo. Perhaps should have seen this coming really but I guess changing the game on the back of one disaster season might also have been seen as an overreaction

So with FH in DGW22 a no brainer, we should be targeting those with a potential DGW21 right?

FH one of those GW's and TC the other is the way I'm looking at it. So once the DGW are announced use FT's to bring in however you are going TC (if you haven't already hot them).

This is lousy news if you still have first wildcard.

Trying to contemplate best strategy. Thinking:

    A) Wildcard into GW19 (26 Dec deadline) with a view to fixing minor things like 2nd playing keeper, Kane or Ronaldo up front etc. Free Hit into GW20 (if there are major postponements). Save second Free Hit for a DGW in GW30-something.

    B) Wildcard into GW19 (26 Dec deadline) with a fairly major overhaul, focussing on near-term fixtures. Keep both Free Hits for future DGWs.

    C) FH into GW19. Wildcard before 28 Dec deadline with focus on near-term fixtures and potential doubles. Save second Free Hit for DGW in GW30-something.

Clearly good to have extra FH but wondering now how best to use first WC in week 20- whether to set team up for 22 with eye on future fixtures (if a double) and have 2 FH’s to use later in season, or set up for longer period post 22 and use FH in 22.

What do you think is best option for those still to use first WC?

    1. Rainer
      • 9 Years
      4 years, 1 month ago

Long game the WC, FH22, then you still have another WC & FH down the line...

Could dead-end your team after the big BGW30, WC, and still have FH for the late DGWs.

See my post above. There's a huge gamble on GW20 going ahead isn't there. I think I'm going to W/C this week in case I need FH for GW20, and hopefully will be able to save it for later in the season instead.

The disadvantage given to those who haven't used their yet is not game-breakingly bad. The ones most negatively affected are obviously the ones who didn't use their FH and only had 6 or so players. This really sucks for them. It's a tough choice to make for FPL.

I think even if you haven't used your FH, this opens up an opportunity to spunk your FH in one of these doubles, knowing full well you can bank the other for a rainy day.

Before today you had a genuine decision to make on whether or not to use it (see Zoph's recent article).

          Well unfair.

Honestly feel this is kind of dumb.

I held Ronaldo/DDG & fielded 9 last week so I could be better placed for the chance of upcoming DGWs.

Now FPL have gone and handed out a free FH so everyone and their nan can chuck 'em in with ease for the double(s) & now have more incentive to play the FH (and you'd think, earn an advantage originally been behind on).

But it is what it is.

Holding Ronaldo was a mistake regardless. Selling him and buying him back would've netted you more points

A lot sold for lacazette for a hit which nets 1 point, then trying to bring ronaldo back, that's a lot of effort for one point

Yeah well Laca is an average pick. Should've sold for City mids before Leeds. Some went Watkins too

If you went Foden & Watkins last week, you'd have got 0 points (most likely, at least a -4).

I had that decision. Was patient, waited for news, and kept Ronaldo.

I went Ronaldo, fodder, fodder to Foden, Mahrez, fodder (-8) before Leeds. So that was 37 - 8 = 29 net pts over two weeks. I just couldn't see a case for keeping Ronaldo for blank, Brighton (also not a great fixture)

Yep exactly. Literal only saving grace is at least it still holds true for the next GW or so.

It basically means now people aren't taking hits to get him in for those GWs, thus removes a major benefit of my decision.

        Not it wasn't.

If I sold him it would have been for Watkins (blank) or Lacazette (only 1 point gain, and bother transfer spent to get him back in).

I held him knowing people would find it tricky to get him back on for the next few weeks.

I meant holding him the first week too. It was Ronaldo with blank, BHA (before it got postponed too) vs City with LEE, new.

I still had a City mid for Leeds & Ronaldo.

Didn't help it was Bilva, but that's purely with the benefit of hindsight.

Similar here, held Ronaldo and played 8. Not bothered that they're changing the rules midseason but we should have gotten it earlier.

Changing the rules midway through a game...what a joke FPL is

I've said this in a couple of replies but I think it merits discussion: the case for the extra FH actually *helping* those managers who have not already used theirs. The argument hinges on three points:

    - Many of the high scoring players from BGW18 were highly-owned anyway. I would argue that there was not much advantage from playing it creatively, it only made sense to play it to make up the numbers, meaning using a hit to put out a templatey team that some managers were lucky enough to be able to field with a FT or a -4. So a lot of managers have played a FH to break even.

    - We are almost certain to have more than one DGW between now and the end of the season, especially if more games get postponed. We may get triple GWs. There will also likely be blank gameweeks which could hurt more than BGW18. Arsenal, Liverpool and City played in the BGW, what if we had a BGW with not many owned players?

    - Extra FHs means that BGWs and DGWs are less likely to have to be factored into second-half wildcards. This means that those who have not played their FH will be better able to wildcard into teams which will see them through the standard gameweeks in between blanks and doubles.

Following on from this, then, those with two FHs left have, potentially, more points to play for than those who have already played FH, as long as the possible gains from the future outweigh the average gain from playing FH in GW18 (and I think they do).

As a long term FPL player - the 12 next to my name gives you some clue - I think this is both lame and desperate from FPL towers.

'Please stay, casuals' Here is a chip. Please stay and play. blaah.

38 weeks - 3 bonuses - plan your strategy and deal with it. Now it is real that at any moment any new chip can be offered, any plans can be changed and to those saying, 'its skill how you navigate it' I think is also tosh as the skill comes from planning 38 weeks, not a few postponements at Christmas.

I'm disappointed they have done this.

It's not a precedent. They opened Pandora's box last season when they gave away a free wc before the resumption of play. I was surprised by that. I'm more surprised by this.

Just terrible to change the rules mid season. It is a competition with rules laid out at the start - match postponements are just part and parcel of what we have to deal with. Same as your star playing getting a straight red when they are in a purple patch.

I don't know yet whether this extra fh really helps or hinders me, but I just don't think they should change the rules. The bonus wildcard two seasons ago was poor as well, in my opinion, but those were more extreme circumstances. This is worse.

Can't disagree with this - it would be irrelevant which category of manager will get a greater advantage from this if they hadn't brought it in in the first place.
