FPL managers to get extra Free Hit chip from Gameweek 20: Initial reaction

Fantasy Premier League (FPL) have revealed that managers will be given an extra Free Hit (FH) chip from Gameweek 20 onwards.

The announcement is a reaction to a chaotic last few weeks in which Covid-19 has severely disrupted the football programme, with 10 Premier League fixtures falling prey to the pandemic.

A hastily arranged Double Gameweek 22 (and possibly a Double Gameweek 21, as well) is expected, following Tuesday’s news about FA Cup replays being shelved to accommodate the fixture backlog.

Managers who have not played their Free Hit ahead of Gameweek 20 will not lose their first chip and instead have two available to them.

Free Hits are unable to use in consecutive Gameweeks, however: after the chip is activated, your squad will return to its previous state for the following Gameweek.

READ MORE: Our beginner’s guide to chips and Blank/Double Gameweeks

WHEN TO USE THE EXTRA FREE HIT CHIP?

Thoughts will immediately turn to the much-touted Double Gameweek 22 which, lest we forget, hasn’t actually been confirmed yet.

With 13 Premier League fixtures outstanding (another three have been called off due to a clash with the FIFA Club World Cup or inclement weather), however, the abandonment of the FA Cup replays is effectively as good as confirmation that it will happen.

While we haven’t yet seen the additional fixtures for Double Gameweek 22, playing a Free Hit then will also mean that the decision on whether or not to sell Mohamed Salah (£13.1m) may be made easier. FPL’s leading points-scorer will miss (at least) Gameweeks 22 and 23 while he is representing Egypt at the Africa Cup of Nations, so deploying a Free Hit in the former would mean that he need only be benched in one Gameweek before his return from Cameroon. That, of course, is under the assumption that he doesn’t miss more domestic action at a pre-tournament training camp.

Blank Gameweek 30 will also likely be a popular target for one of the Free Hit chips: there is a clash with the FA Cup quarter-finals that weekend, with no possible chance of postponed fixtures being moved to the following Gameweek as an international break then takes place.

THE FFSCOUT COMMUNITY’S INITIAL REACTION

“Guessing 90% of active managers will be on FH in GW22 now and saving the other for later in the season.” – Revival

“I’ve been on a Free Hit 21/Wildcard (WC) 22 plan for a while.

“This just seals it. FH and Bench Boost (BB) for the major Double Gameweeks (DGWs) from cups, Triple Captain (TC) in the minor DGWs for the likes of Liverpool, City, Son and Chelsea wing-backs.” – Ze_Austin

“Makes sense to go for GW22 if that’s the big DGW. Although sure more thought is needed… could an early WC and BB in 22 be the way to go and use two FHs for the doubles later in the season?” – Pat Bonner

“Clearly good to have extra FH but wondering now how best to use first WC in GW20: whether to set the team up for 22 with an eye on future fixtures (if it’s a double) and have two FHs to use later in the season or set up for longer period post-22 and use FH in 22.” – dunas_dog

“It’s just making the game easier for people who don’t plan. That’s two DGWs handed to everyone on a plate.” – Wild Rover

“Not sure what to feel about this news. I have been badly burned with player no-shows over recent weeks and have been carefully prepping my squad to maximise potential DGWs. All that planning seems a waste now with a 2nd free hit being announced and I feel disadvantaged. Rules should not change mid-season” – MrBadger

“I think it merits discussion: the case for the extra FH actually *helping* those managers who have not already used theirs. The argument hinges on three points:

– Many of the high-scoring players from BGW18 were highly owned anyway. I would argue that there was not much advantage from playing it creatively, it only made sense to play it to make up the numbers, meaning using a hit to put out a template-y team that some managers were lucky enough to be able to field with a FT or a -4. So a lot of managers have played a FH to break even.

– We are almost certain to have more than one DGW between now and the end of the season, especially if more games get postponed. We may get triple GWs. There will also likely be Blank Gameweeks which could hurt more than BGW18. Arsenal, Liverpool and City played in the BGW, what if we had a BGW with not many owned players?

– Extra FHs mean that BGWs and DGWs are less likely to have to be factored into second-half wildcards. This means that those who have not played their FH will be better able to wildcard into teams which will see them through the standard Gameweeks in between blanks and doubles.

Following on from this, then, those with two FHs left have, potentially, more points to play for than those who have already played FH, as long as the possible gains from the future outweigh the average gain from playing FH in GW18 (and I think they do).” – Make Arrows Green Again

Good luck getting anywhere near an optimal DGW22 without it.

Unless you WC two weeks beforehand and BB...

The question isn't can you be optimal, it's how good is optimal actually going to be when half these DGW teams will rotate heavily and struggle and the best teams have single games and will probably come out and blown away opposition

BB in 22 would be huge if you're already well set up for it. 15 players instead of 11 from the FHers

The issue is Chelsea, Arsenal and City fixtures aren't that great. So a FH solves that issue for that 1 week and I don't have to get rid of my City or Arsenal assets now. Only Chelsea Defenders to remove now.

AFCON looks to be confirmed doesn't it? In which case I can't work out what to do with transfers/wild cards, I know Dennis has to be shipped out but it seems foolish doing it ahead of this week's fixture, same with ditching ESR/Lacazette before Norwich.

Agree with the free wildcard they gave after the long break the other season (even though I was active over the break & made transfers to set up my team for the end of lockdown).

Don't agree with a spur of the moment FH handed out after 1 week of postponements, where even the isolation rules have changed.

I would have been fine without it honestly but I'll still take it I guess. Best to use it in 22 isn't it? And save the other FH and WC for the next blank and double.

Would have been in a bad spot for DGW22. Probably would have used WC21 for BB22, two weeks before the deadline and hope, like always with FPL, that a plan holds firm...

Now? Don't even think about DGW22, can just FH the morning of the deadline & be able to spread the Salah cash 'perfectly' and return to normal the GW after.

While also not having to worry about BGW30, as not only will we all have another FH but still a WC (+BB) to dead-end out of trouble...

not really. People who already have Ronaldo and can get to Son can build a solid BB and have 15 players compared to your 11 for the DGW. And then have 2 FH left to navigate rest of the season

Good move if you're confident that you'll want an arsenal attacker on their fixture run (which on paper isn't great for attack), I'm personally looking to move ESR to a non arsenal asset.

Sounds to me like you got unlucky with fixture cancelations, hoped to make it up through the doubles and are now trying to pass off how strategic you were with words like building towards instead of just dumb bad luck

Wouldn’t it be better to have a rule along with “the game week will be nullified if over 50% of the games are cancelled 7 days or less prior to the deadline” instead of making rules up along the way?

It's here now, but frankly I just feel, this is commercialism and diluting FPL. Not saying rules can't change and nor am I against evolution, but needs to be done BEFORE the season starts. Yeah, so there are circumstances in the game due to global/domestic issues, well, to me that's chaos and that's the differential we all need. I don't want to be handheld and given extra chips (besides it might have already messed some peoples strategy up).

    1. Pacer.
      • 9 Years
      2 years, 3 months ago

They didn't learn from the chaos last season and didn't prepare properly for this one despite warnings the same would happen this year. The game should have had a larger bench and possibly even a revision to how many players can be selected from each team. And here we are with the game devalued and then further devalued with a rule change

It's not the easiest thing to work out under the surface because ultimately you don't want it to fall into territory where the majority just have extra 4.0/4.5 on it to save money and never ever use transfers to tend to players 4, 5 and 6. But with some consideration to how it works I think it's the best option

It disadvantages the game as a whole by eroding confidence. In future managers will be choosing to play a game with the following set of rules, unless they change those rules, which they might. It's reactionary and it's not a good thing

I see what you're saying and agree in principle, although I'd argue whilst planning is essential, how you react is also key.

In this case I'm not convinced it's a significant rule change, it appeases the casuals who may have burned their free hit and adds an extra consideration to those who are now sitting on two.

I'm just playing devil's advocate, but possibly the reality is the community care more about this sort of detail than FPL towers?

I do genuinely think it just makes it a bit more interesting tho as the chips have been getting stale in terms of application best practice, so 2 FHs is something different.

Would you have used a FH if you'd known this last week? I wouldn't but if your answer is yes then yes i agree it's a very annoying announcement!

This latest FH chip offer is rather offensive and lazy.
This scenario is no different to throwing a bag of sweets into a room full of kids inorder to keep them quiet.

The game makers once again show they dont understand the essence of the game which is week to week transfers/strategy rather than playing chips.

They should have planned ahead pre season and provided an additional transfer in weeks that were affected by Covid. This requires more skill from managers and gives you more opportunities to improve rank.

Instead I see little advantage or skill in playing an extra FH when most engaged managers will use it the same week with the same players.

Already FPL Twitter and content creators are proposing a GW22 FH. This does not make up for the weeks of Covid disruption that we've endured. It's simply an appeasement offer to managers.

FH on a dgw has never been a new concept has it?

Not sure why people are shocked that a game is throwing out an engaging piece of content when its KPIs are engagement. No one at FPL is sitting there and thinking "geez we need to reward the experienced managers who are planning hard"

Changing a rule mid season is a bit of a line to cross though, no? It's short sighted.

Since covid, no rules are safe. We live in a different era now and no one knows how to react or behave. Everyone is learning as we go and figuring it out as best as we can. FPL is no different, even if its hugely inconsequential in the grand scheme of things

Rules changes that don't actually improve the competition but only drive engagement do not make it a better game. They just further devalue it

Thats your opinion. The main people behind the game seeing maintained level of engagement and more active login times due to their FH will disagree with you on the value of the game.

Couldn't agree more with you mate. I would add that FPL is in essence a game supposed to mirror events happening in real life, so it seemed normal to me and within the spirit of the game to be affected by the huge disruption caused by Covid in the PL.

I'd rather have tried and navigated through that hectic period with no intervention from FPL Towers. The clubs are receiving no help whatsoever from the league to deal with the situation, so why should we?

Especially in the form of a second FH chip awarded one GW too late for many managers and which doesn't seem at all like an appropriate answer.

So much opprobrium towards this extra Free Hit. And yet it became an entirely reasonable possibility as soon as the fixtures started getting heavily impacted by Omicron. Have your moan and then amend your plans.

Thinking I will follow the strategy of those who have already used their FH and save my 2nd one for the very last blank or DGW. Worst case scenario use it in the final Gameweek of the season which always springs surprises.

I don't see how it's giving a big advantage to those who have already used it. Last GW was not ideal for it for points others have mentioned.

However it does remove 1 extra GW of planning which makes it harder for everyone chasing and easier for casuals and those already at the top of their leagues.

because those who already used it wouldnt have the ability to use it during dgw

Yes but there will be more than 1 DGW with all these cancellations. We will get to use a FH in both? Or a DGW and one of the inevitable blank GWs?

Yeah it's strange. It's annoying because it diminishes the planning factor. But I can't see how anyone who already used it is significantly advantaged.

It'll come in to effect later on, when people who have more chips plan their way around cup ties and more postponements. This will be huge in differentiating strategies

I've just listened to the Footballers Football podcast which he hosts alongside Callum Wilson.

Last episode filmed on 16th December and he had a cold/flu but stated it wasn't covid.

Of course that's a week ago now but hey ho.

Not sure when next episode is scheduled but they are released midweek before the games so we should get some insight.

Episodes have been released weekly up till now. Not sure if they will do one this week with Xmas.

      Crap podcast BTW.

Okay, so these are the three plans I've come up with for my squad:

"WC21 FH22" looks optimal, especially since it allows many City and Villa players, who aren't great for DGW22

"FH21 WC22" works, but not as well

"WC21 + bench City for GW22 and save the other four chips" is another good plan

I haven't seen a good way to work a BB22 in, so I'd avoid that. BB will be later, with a max total of -8 allowed in planning transfers around that chip. I'm very fine with not having the full stack of 15 DGWers, as there's no easy route to that without sacrificing points, since we rarely have WC-BB-WC as a route

    1. Scholes Out For Summer
      • Fantasy Football Scout Member

      Im thinking WC21 BB22

I can even work around a BB22 without the WC and then WC 23

Thing is, City won't have a double in GW22 (unless they get a postponement soon), and they face Chelsea. I don't really fancy 'em there, especially with so many other clubs having great fixtures with doubles. I'd want to lose 'em if I want that bench boost, and I want at least two City players for a while. I'll Free Hit or bench 'em
