After the non-stop football action over Christmas and New Year, it feels like an age since we’ve had any meaningful Fantasy Premier League (FPL) team news.

But the winter/international break is nearly at an end and thoughts now turn to Gameweek 24, which kicks off next Tuesday.

Training ground images have offered us hope on players like Son Heung-min (£10.6m) and Ben Foster (£4.1m) and now top-flight managers are starting to face the media again, with a number of them holding conference calls on Thursday ahead of the FA Cup fourth round.

We’ll have the main headlines from the day’s pressers below but first, here’s when you might also expect to get some FPL team news information over the coming days:

  • Friday: Pre-match FA Cup press conferences from the managers of Chelsea, Crystal Palace, Leicester City, Liverpool, Manchester City, Norwich City, Tottenham Hotspur, West Ham United, Wolverhampton Wanderers.
  • Friday-Sunday: Post-match press conferences from all 14 Premier League bosses whose teams are in FA Cup fourth-round action, as well as Sean Dyche and Roy Hodgson, whose sides face each other in the final fixture of Double Gameweek 23 (nothing from Arsenal, Aston Villa, Leeds United and Newcastle United).
  • Monday-Tuesday: Pre-match press conferences from at least 14 of the 18 Premier League managers whose teams have a Gameweek 24 fixture. Some of these might be in the form of ’embargoed’ quotes from the FA Cup weekend but most will be facing the media anew. We may not hear from the bosses of Liverpool, Leicester, Arsenal and Wolves, however, as those four clubs won’t play until Thursday – so there’s a strong chance that Messrs Klopp, Rodgers, Arteta and Lage will be staging press conferences on Wednesday, after the FPL deadline. Not only will we not get the latest information on Mohamed Salah (£12.7m), we won’t have had any official Arsenal team news for the best part of three weeks.

THURSDAY’S TEAM NEWS AND INJURY UPDATES

MANCHESTER UNITED

We are set to see Paul Pogba in action for the first time under Ralf Rangnick on Friday, with the fit-again Frenchman poised to feature in the FA Cup tie against Middlesbrough.

“Paul [Pogba] will be part of the group. He might even be in the starting XI.” – Ralf Rangnick

Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Luke Shaw are also back, with Rangnick saying that Shaw would start due to the late return of Alex Telles from international duty.

Edinson Cavani is also back late from Uruguay and won’t be involved, while Victor Lindelof (illness) and Eric Bailly (ankle) are fresh concerns.

“Cavani… contacted me a week ago and asked me if he could have two more days at home. I allowed him because I knew that he couldn’t be in the starting XI anyway, with jetlag and only coming back today or last night. So he won’t be part of the group.

“Victor Lindelof has been ill the whole week and not training. So he will also miss tomorrow’s game. Eric Bailly came back yesterday. He has some problems, a swollen ankle, and will therefore not be a part of the squad for tomorrow.

“Jesse [Lingard], he asked me and the club if we could give him a couple of days off, just to clear up his mind. He will be back in the group I suppose next Monday, back for training, and then be a regular part of the whole squad again.” – Ralf Rangnick

Mason Greenwood is suspended by the club and won’t feature in training, let alone competitive action.

SOUTHAMPTON

Alex McCarthy (hamstring) and Nathan Tella (groin) remain out for the Saints ahead of their FA Cup tie against Coventry City but Tino Livramento (knee) and Will Smallbone (calf) are back in training and could feature for the first time this calendar year.

“We have in the moment, two injured players. Alex McCarthy, is a little bit longer out, has had a setback in his recovery. Nathan Tella is also still out. Will Smallbone is back in training, Tino Livramento also.” – Ralph Hasenhuttl

Moussa Djenepo is also back from international duty.

EVERTON

Dominic Calvert-Lewin (knock) won’t play any part in Everton’s FA Cup match against Brentford this weekend and he’ll remain a doubt for Gameweek 24, although new Toffees boss Frank Lampard hopes to have him back on the training ground in the coming days.

“Dominic Calvert-Lewin picked up a small knock in the last game so he won’t be available for this weekend. We hope he can be back and outside over the next days and ready for the games coming up.” – Frank Lampard

Fabian Delph (thigh), Tom Davies (hamstring) and Abdoulaye Doucoure (groin) are sidelined while new arrivals Donny van de Beek and Dele Alli are cup-tied.

BRENTFORD

We’re not likely to see Christian Eriksen in a Brentford shirt for a little while, as Thomas Frank revealed that the Dane is only due to start training his new teammates on Monday and may be “weeks” from a return.

“Christian will arrive on Sunday and he will train with the team on Monday. That will be the first training session. Of course I have been speaking to him a lot the last few weeks, more since December, but he has a physical coach and they had Zoom meeting with our head of performance during this week to make sure we hand over everything in the best way.

“Christian has a solid physical foundation and has been doing all sorts of tests, of course. He has been running a lot, training a lot… he has done quite a lot over the last few months so his foundation is fine, but another thing is to get up to that match intensity.

“It is more or less impossible for me to say when he will be available. I think I will be much more clever on Monday when I have seen him, worked with him, talked with his physical coach. I hope weeks, a few weeks, but I don’t know.” – Thomas Frank

On course for a return this weekend, however, is David Raya, who has been out for the best part of four months with a knee injury. Raya played 63 minutes in a friendly against Aston Villa earlier this week.

BURNLEY

Deadline-day signing Wout Weghorst could be set for his Burnley debut in the Clarets’ second Double Gameweek 23 fixture against Watford on Saturday and may be paired alongside Maxwel Cornet, who has returned from international duty in Cameroon.

“[Weghorst] has got a good chance of featuring [v Watford on Saturday]. He’s fit and well. We’ve tested him, he’s enjoying the challenge straight away.

“Maxwel was a little bit later coming back after having a couple of extra days, so we’ll have to be a little bit careful. He didn’t play a lot while he’s been away, the training schedule is different and the game schedule. Them two come into the thinking.” – Sean Dyche

READ MORE: What can FPL managers expect from new £6.5m forward Wout Weghorst?

Charlie Taylor (foot) remains touch and go, while Johann Berg Gudmundsson (appendicitis) and Matej Vydra (hernia) are set for “weeks” out. Ashley Barnes (thigh) featured for the under-23s on Thursday, meanwhile, as he slowly builds up match fitness.

“Johann Gudmundsson is down with appendicitis, he’s had to have that done. Charlie Taylor is still touch and go. Ashley Barnes is on his way back but still needs game-time, he’s getting a run-out today for 45 minutes.” – Sean Dyche

Josh Brownhill is suspended after picking up his fifth booking of the season a fortnight ago but there’s no flag on him in FPL as he’ll be back for Gameweek 24.

BRIGHTON AND HOVE ALBION

Graham Potter confirmed that Yves Bissouma has trained today after returning from the Africa Cup of Nations, so will go into the squad for the FA Cup clash with Spurs.

Lewis Dunk, Shane Duffy and Adam Lallana should all be involved in the tie against the Lilywhites but Alexis Mac Allister is still Covid-positive after missing both of Argentina’s World Cup qualifiers so is unavailable.

Enock Mwepu (hamstring) and Jeremy Sarmiento (hamstring) remain out.

Brighton, of course, blank in Gameweek 24.

Borderline, you’re not far from having a good starting XI. I’d try to see if I could get to a decent team with 1-2 hits first. Maybe Gray & Antonio to Salah & Edouard?

Only got 2 playing defenders, so thinking it needs to be Alonso out....
Alonso, gray to ait-Nouri, Salah (-4)
Then maybe Antonio to edouard and upgrade one of lowton/Johnson next week.

Looking at the teams who have 2 fixtures in DGW26, some early thoughts.

Liverpool: Triple up essential and TC Salah
Leeds: 2 hard fixtures so avoid
Burnley: Not great fixtures and got Liverpool in GW25 so avoid.
Spurs: With City away feels like more of a single GW. Son/Kane maybe.
Watford: Hold whoever you own this week. 1 or 2 players enough.
Palace: Only a single GW for Gallagher. Zaha is worth a look.
Arsenal: 2 nice fixtures so getting a midfielder and defender is ideal.
Wolves: Decent fixtures and defenders are cheap so would get at least 1.

So in summary reckon about 7 DGW players is enough ( 3 Liverpool, 1 Watford, 2 Arsenal, 1 Wolves ). Bruno/Ronaldo > Son/Kane after DGW25 is worth considering but comes with a risk. Utd battering Leeds on the opening weekend is still in my mind and if Utd perform well in GW25 it certainly presents a dilemma to keep or not.

Villa and West Ham have good fixtures and I would favour City to win their match too so selling assets from these sides could easily backfire.

Interesting Arsenal also play Wolves in GW24 so we have a nice dress rehearsal for the DGW. If that is a low-scoring game then double defence looks the best bet. It will be team dependent on which way to go. Easier for me to sell Trossard in GW26 for Saka/ESR/Martinelli than get a defender at the moment.

Isn't there a Cup Final for Liverpool less than 4 days after the Leeds game, against Chelsea to consider too.

Plus Champions League away at Inter the week beforehand.

Yep it's a heavy schedule for Liverpool. Certainly a risk that Salah minutes could be managed, ideally we want 2 starts before being withdrawn around 75 minute mark. We will be monitoring what Klopp says about rotation/changes etc before the gameweek deadline closely.

Most of them aren't that enticing, Arsenal and Liverpool the best of them.

Salah could easily be rested home to Norwich with his Afcon time.

Omicron is ripping through primary schools with end of Plan B so games could well be postponed even with the new rules.

I guess a dgw is better than a sgw with Covid-19 risks and perhaps a Palace or Watford player will do well.

      So much uncertainty still.

I am really worried about Pool schedule around dgw. I can see either of both TAA and Robbo rested once and same goes for all forwards. Really not sure is it possible still to not triple up 😀 even sgw can be gold with those fixtures.

I have 2 FT and am looking at bringing in KDB and Digne this GW. I think just play GW24 first and then look at the double in GW26. A lot can change in the meantime and Digne has a decent fixture in GW26 anyways.

    Evening all.

Without using a chip, how many DGW players you reckon you'd have in your squad for DGW26?

I think I'll be sitting on Salah, Son, TAA, Edouard, Robertson which makes me feel like it's quite light.

Considering not selecting my City picks so I can hold a few more DGWers.

What does everyone else think they'll be on?

Without hits or chips I'd have 7.

A lot depends on which SGWers you have though as a lot of them have excellent fuxtures in 26. West Ham v Newcastle, Villa v Watford, United v Leeds. Plus then someone like Cancelo who you'd happily play against Spurs.

I think it's possible to have a very strong side in 26 without being overloaded on DGWers, as long as your SGW players are strong. And of course if the fewer Arsenal/Liverpool players you have the more not FHing in GW27 is an option.

See above. Reckon 7 could be the ideal amount but I might go with 6 to avoid benching dilemma's. Think I will be sitting on Salah, Jota, TAA, White, Dennis, a Arsenal midfielder and then got to decide if I sell Ronaldo for Kane or use the funds to take a hit for Son.

Depends on your plan for GW27. If you're FHing that week then an Arsenal mid for 26, if you're not FHing then Raphinha as he plays in 27.

    DDG
    TAA Cancelo Dawson
    Jota Foden Bilva Bowen Maddison
    Ronaldo King

    Foster Dennis Livramento Alonso

    1FT, 3.0itb

    Is this a good plan:

    GW24: Bilva Maddison >> KDB(c) Ramsey (-4)
    GW25: KDB >> Fernandes
    GW26: Fernandes >> Salah Tierney (-4)

Or do I just save this week and go with the current team to give me 2FT next week?

    Thanks

Foden and Cancelo are fine for captaincy picks. Roll transfer

I took -4 last week for C KdB, no regrets. I think having best C option is worth a hit.

Nothing wrong with taking a hit for captaincy. I just don't think the person needs to take one when they already have Foden and Cancelo.

    Would you WC this team

    Ramsdale De Gea

    Cancelo Rudiger Mitchell Robertson Cucurella

    Jota Bernardo Bowen Saka Mbeumo

    Ronaldo Dennis Watkins

1FT 0.4 ITB WC, TC, BB and 2nd FH left

    Any ideas would be welcomed

      Thinking through your team:

      1) You have three fts between now and 26.
      2) You're fine for DGW25 with Ronaldo, De Gea and Cucurella in place.
      3) For DGW26 I think you already have 6 DGWers if I'm counting right? Four of which are Liverpool/Arsenal players but no Salah.
      4) You also have quite a few SGWers with good fixtures in GW26.

So my thinking would be to use those three FTs to get in the remaining key DGW26 players, most importantly Salah(TC). Rudiger and Bilva priorities to be sold.

Then FH in GW27 because you'll have quite a few Arsenal/Liverpool players.

So no, no wildcard for me.

Well, I agree, but using last FH gw 27 is asking for future trouble.

Oh sorry you're right, I read that as 2fhs.

I think he needs to bring in Salah for 26 regardless. That leaves him with 5 blankers for 27, though De Gea can come in for Ramsdale. So sell Jota at that point maybe and bench Salah, TAA and Saka?

Interested to know what you would do with this team. No DGW25 players and 6 for 26. Plan is to Salah TC

2nd FH & WC, BB and TC

    1FT 1.8ITB
    Ramsdale
    Cancelo TAA Alonso
    Jota Bowen Foden Raphinha Salah
    Watkins Antonio
    (Foster King Dawson Livramento)

Have 2 FT this week. If I planned it a certain way I could end up with 9 DGW players for DGW26 and use Benchboost with DDG, Digne, Bowen and Antonio as subs and Ronaldo and Cancelo as my other SGW players.

Only downside is can't TC Salah in GW26 and would have to FH in GW27 as would have 3 Arsenal and Liverpool but it is seriously tempting.

I just can't see a GW that'll be as good as TC Salah in GW26

That looks the biggest problem. Also dependent on no fresh injuries occurring to my current team and not having any other fires to put out which is unlikely given GW26 is more than 2 weeks away. Got till Tuesday to decide so will look at other options in the meantime.

How many points do you expect to get with that BB and TC later? How much do you expect to get if you TC Salah and BB later?

Good point. I expect GW36 to be a large DGW with lots of teams playing twice. Wildcarding in the weeks before that to get 15 double gameweekers for a benchboost then might be the better way to go.

That's a tough decision you have. The planets look aligned for the BB in GW26 but you just know everyone will be TC Mo. If you decide to BB, it'll be hide behind the sofa time for those 2 x 90mins. I'd go BB with that an save the TC for anything looking semi decent.

I see there's new content from the ladies. While all content is appreciated, I'm a sponge for any new info, I find their recordings very scripted and edited to shreds. Seems like every 30secs the screen twitches, showing obvious signs of a cut, not sure if anyone else has noticed. I prefer the the vids to be less plastic more continuous inc mistakes but that's just me.

Team is perfectly set for a FH in 26 instead of 27. Only caveat is not being able to use the TC on Salah.

He could be interesting dgw pick and has a fixture gw 27, but after that 3 sour fixtures and rotation / game time risk.

    Guaita
    TAA Dias Cancelo
    Bruno Rashford Jota Bowen Gray
    Antonio King

    Reece Alonso

    2 FT.

Have more starters in 27 than i have dgwers from 26.

Leaning towards FHing in 26 instead of Salah (TC).

    Thoughts?

What is going to be more profitable? TC Salah or bench boost for GW26?

Personally I only have 6 DGWers and no FT, so it will be costly to get 11+ DGWers out for BB. The sensible decision is probably to go TC Salah. Tempted to FH though..
