Michael Laudrup’s first move as manager of Swansea saw Spanish central defender Jose Manuel Flores sign from Serie A outfit Genoa in a deal thought to be in the region of £2m. The 25-year-old arrives on a three-year deal and re-unites with the new Swans boss, having previously worked under the Dane at Mallorca…

The transfer goes some way to addressing the gap left in Swansea’s central defence after Steven Caulker returned to parent club Tottenham following a successful loan spell at the Liberty Stadium last season, with Flores, or “Chico” as he is known, set to partner Ashley Williams in the heart of the back-four. Similar to fellow new boy Jonathan De Guzman, the 6 foot 2 inch stopper revealed the chance to work with Laudrup again was a key factor in his move to the Welsh club, going on to say:

“He knows me as a person and a player, so I was honoured when the call came. I believe the manager will be good for Swansea and they have done extremely well to get him. Swansea’s way of playing is the same style as he wants to play the game. He is the right person to take this club forward. Being brought up in Spain, I have the same culture of possession and passing football. I like to play from the back, come forward with the ball, and add to the possession game.”

The Statistics

The centre-half began his career as an 18-year old with hometown club Cadiz. After a couple of seasons in the reserves, Flores was promoted to the first-team but made just three appearances before being sent out on loan to the Spanish lower leagues during the 2007-08 campaign. Spells at Racing Club Portuense and Barcelona B harvested five goals in 32 games for the clubs before La Liga side Almeria came calling.

Over the course of a couple of campaigns, Flores played 47 times and scored a single goal – his displays in helping the club to a solid 13th place finish in 2009-10 caught the eye of Genoa and the centre-half moved to Italy in the summer of 2010 on a five-year deal. He failed to impress during his one season in Serie A, however, and, with just 15 appearances under his belt in his debut campaign, was loaned to Mallorca last term with the Spanish side given an option to make the deal permanent. Back in his native country, Flores came to the fore and was an integral part of the first-team, making 33 appearances, with his reading of the game and ability to intercept his opponents’ play one of the most impressive across Europe’s top five leagues last season.

The Prospects

While many fear a drop in Swansea’s potential following the departure of Brendan Rodgers, Laudrup is keen for his new charges to maintain their slick passing game as the Welsh club look to avoid “second season syndrome” after last term’s 11th place finish. His ability on the ball should see Flores fit seamlessly into the club’s system and with 14 clean sheets accrued in 2011/12, Fantasy managers may be eyeing up the Swans backline once again.

The major issue this time round is pricing, however. Michel Vorm came in at 4.0 in the previous campaign but his heroics between the posts have already seen his starting price soar this time round, with Fantasy Premier League (FPL) valuing him at 5.5. “Chico” has been handed a 5.0 starting price by the FPL in today’s published price list, putting him on a par with established starters Angel Rangel, Neil Taylor and Ashley Williams. Unless he can display some attacking threat or start soaking up some EA PPI points from king of the blocks, Williams, Flores will surely take a back seat, then.

Intriguingly, Flores has been slapped with a relatively low price in the Sky Sports game in comparison to his defensive team-mates. His 5.0 valuation is considerably less than Williams’ 6.9, with Rangel the next cheapest option at 5.7. In this game, then, the new boy looks an enticing prospect for those Fantasy managers looking for a route into Laudrup’s defence.

A kind opening schedule only furthers his appeal. Home clashes with (WHM, SUN, EVE) in the first five Gameweeks are allied with trips to QPR and Villa and offer Laudrup a strong platform to kick off his career at the Liberty Stadium in style. Whether Fantasy managers will be celebrating every Swansea clean sheet in a similar manner to last season is more than a little unlikely, though.

Tons of RMTs but none with VP nor Ba. Granted they might be gone by mid Aug, but I would never go withtout VP in the first four weeks, and Ba is a bargain on pk in a top 6 team. And yes there is a dgw, but cant understand the love for Prog when there are the likes of Djib, Holt, Petric and co for 1ish million more

I think only Torres has better fixtures, City/manu/ars have similar fixtures difficulty wise in the first four weeks and we do ot know what will happen to Ade. VP was the first name on anyones teamsheets last year, dont understand why things have changed so dramatically. I might change my opinion if Ars decides to sell or there are many uncertaintied around him, but in the meantime he is in my team

Until last season I had a rule on RvP - if he was fit, he was in. Sadly he had a whole season fit, scored shedloads and now costs too much.
As for Pog, I have a coll £2m put aside to change either him of Torres depending on the lay of the land post-DGW.

A few questions based on RMT's I've seen.

    1) Why the Stoke love defensively? Their first two home games are Arsenal and City, and yes, they could keep a clean sheet, but there are better prospects out there. Also, the Marc Wilson love in...yes, he plays higher up the field but he is less prolific than say Shawcross who is just 0.5m and nailed on.

    2) DDG + Clichy ahead of Hart + Vidic. OK, I understand the theory that combo one is 1.5m cheaper, but are people forgetting Clichy's rotation last season and the fact DDG has the Olympics and potentially could be 'eased' back in for the start of the season...furthermore he is always one bad game away from being dropped...a problem you don't have with Hart. Vidic is also a much bigger goal threat than Clichy.

    3) Hangeland seems to be in everyone's team but I'm not convinced. He has had one good season out of 5 in front of goal for Fulham, scoring 6 of his 8 league goals in it. Fulham's defence is also considerably worse under Jol than previous managers so I think he isn't quite as 'value' as people think.

    4) Fabio. Just because he's on loan from United doesn't suddenly make him a decent fantasy prospect. QPR leaked plenty of goals last year, even at home, and I am avoiding their backline until I've seen an improvement.

    5) Not much Walcott love. That surprises me given his point scoring form in the second half of last season. Obviously there are doubts over his game time with a fair amount of competition for places in that area, but I think he's definitely worth a go early on.

    Anyway, just my opinions 😀

With Walcott he is a confidence player who does well in patches then fades away. Ive been burnt by him many times so now I just wait for his patches to emerge before buying him. I had him towards the end of last season.

      1) They are proven to be solid at home and no Europa league this season iirc and most are not buying their defenders for the short-term.

      2) Kolarov may be on his way which would make Clichy ever more appealing but I agree on the Vidic pick.

      3) He's fairly cheap, but I like your points on him.

      4) QPR improved significantly under Hughes and Fabio likes to get forward, can't go far wrong for 4.5m

      5) Walcott is ok, not a standout option though.

Marc Wilson is just the cheapest Stoke route, and Stoke are wonderful as they can be relied upon for home clean sheets against anyone. (Must be benched at away matches though) This was slightly wrecked last year by the europa league

Agree with all except #4... I think Fabio has pace, is solid in the tackle, aggressive, and loves to get forward... add to the mix that QPR should be much improved now that Hughes will have had a full pre-season to get his methods across... plus the fact that he's only 4.5 & he turns into a nice "calculated gamble". Sure it may backfire, but at that price there's a lot more upside than downside risk.

Guy in ML has just told me he plans to have DDG AND Mignolet

Tried to talk him out of it but he wouldn't have a bar of my, why would buy Mignolet at 5, not to play him.

    "I might do"

"Then why spend 6 on De Gea not to play him every week."

"What do you know, I'll do what I want."

    "Ok"

Can't help but wonder if there's a reason I finished 300 points ahead of him last year

A big question. The answer is, we don't really know. Last season the defence was a nice mix of clean-sheet and attacking potentail, but whether that'll continue in the Prem is debateable. On balance, worth a punt I'd say, especially if an attacking RB enters the fray...

Marko Marin is up for the challenge of forcing his way into Chelsea's star-studded midfield.
Marin signed for the Blues from Werder Bremen earlier in the summer and will be vying with Frank Lampard, Ramires, Juan Mata and Eden Hazard for a place in Roberto Di Matteo's starting XI.
Brazilian youngster Oscar could also have arrived by the time the new season kicks off but Marin is playing it cool.

he 23-year-old Germany international told Sky Sports News: 'I have to show my qualities and play as good as I can. If I do this then I am not afraid and am sure I will play. Nobody has guarantees but if I perform well then I will play.
'I am still young and hope I will improve and show my best at Chelsea.

I think he'll start first 2 of 3 games for sure

    For 26million:

    Rooney + Torres + Graham
    or

I've already got a Chelsea midfielder in mind and a defender. So considering that, and also I don't want to over load on Chelsea, this having 3 non playables GW3. Which is the better option. Feel free to mix both up as well!

    Southampton:

Tadanari Lee at £4.5m for Saints; I think he'll get game time and prove to be a useful third striker at a bargain price if you are going top heavy on midfield... he looks good value. Industrious, tenacious but with a eye for goal - he may be an ace in the pack (despite the arrival of Jay-Rod) that has been underestimated. (buggumark?)

Lambert you all know about but much more to his game now than just goals-he could do well but still seems slightly pricey - he'll be on pens so can see a dozen or so goals for him easily this season.

Looks like Clyne is coming in at RB - with that in mind despite the assists last season, I think we can assume he'll pinch Richardson's spot and butterfield will be third choice.

Some have asked about Fonte - class player but missed a chunk of the season with injury. We're actively sourcing "one, if not two new centre backs" (Adkins) so he (presumably) is at risk of being usurped. Hooiveld picked up half a dozen goals, a number in crucial matches, last season. Expect the Danny Fox/Jos Hooiveld combo to cause some teams some problems, in addition to creating good attacking points from the back. I'm not sure how confident I am right now of our ability to keep clean sheets - we're light in the GK and CB department so I'd avoid Davis in goal and only pick Saints players in Defence likely to pick up assists/goals.

Cork and Schneiderlin are fine players who we are all excited to see play at the top level; but FF wise nothing to shout home about. Avoid.

Happy to offer opinion on Saints players if required so feel free to ask me questions...

Oh, and another thing - Luke Shaw is the latest to come through our academy to the fringes of the first team. He played v Anderlecht at the weekend and has gone on the pre-season tour and he may well break through over the course of the season. With Alex Buttner's ongoing transfer saga, and Dan Harding and Ryan Dickson already on the bus, it's fair to say we're well stocked in that corner of the field 🙂

New signing Jan Vertonghen believes Tottenham can push for the Premier League title this season.

'Over the last years Spurs have become a very big club in England.
'They finished in the top four a few times and for me it was one of the best clubs in the Premier League and that is one of the reasons I wanted to come here.
'There is a lot of quality and I think everybody wants to make a good season.
'Last year in the first six or seven months, they were up there for the title, the championship.

AVB will probably have more sucess with Spurs than Chelsea. Spurs backline much better suited for his style, and they have a more exciting team now than when he took over Chelsea. I think they`ll be good this year. Why is everyone so certain that Kagawa will start the season for United? I mean, people around here seems to think he`s nailed on.

Do we think Yaya will be playing advanced for City this year.

Can;t shake the idea that Bent could be essential this year (a rich man's Grant Holt), If I can ditch Hazard, Yaya and Pog to Lampard, Bent and Maloney, it's very do-able.
