Our series of articles on the promoted sides ends with a look at Nottingham Forest’s midfielders and forwards.

We have already assessed The Reds’ head coach and defence, with focus now switching to the exciting Brennan Johnson (£6.0m) and the supporting cast.

To help us with our research, we spoke to Fantasy Football Scout’s founding father and Forest supporter, Mark Sutherns, to provide a fan’s view.

You can find everything you need to know about fellow new boys Fulham and Bournemouth here.

The stats in this piece are taken from FotMob and WhoScored, with the heatmap courtesy of SofaScore.

WHAT IS FOREST’S GOAL-SCORING POTENTIAL IN FPL?

Forest were promoted from the Championship with the third-best attacking record, having scored 73 goals in their 46 league matches.

That was 33 short of Fulham’s total (106) and one fewer than second-placed Bournemouth (74).

However, Forest plundered just five goals in their opening seven matches under Chris Hughton prior to his sacking, while it’s also worth noting that no Championship side acquired more points than them in 2022.

Above: Annual Championship table 2022, via Transfermarkt

The Reds were behind nine Championship sides for shots in the box in 2021/22, but what’s encouraging is how effective they were on the counter-attack, an area Mark highlighted as a strength.

2021/22 total (rank v other Championship clubs)
Goals scored73 (3rd)
Shots573 (5th=)
Shots in the box350 (10th)
Shots on target199 (4th)
Attempts from set plays142 (16th=)
Attempts on the counter-attack27 (2nd)
xG69.7 (7th)

“While Cooper likes to control the ball and possession in matches, Forest were the most effective Championship side without the ball in that they offered a sharp attacking edge on transition. They don’t engage a high press but instead defend smartly and set traps for turnovers and then attack with the pace of the wing-backs and front two to capitalise. It’s a tactic that seems set up for a newly promoted side and one that will likely see Forest cause problems, even for some of the more elite Premier League sides. – Mark Sutherns

Mark also suggested Forest can be effective from set plays, although having lost the on-loan James Garner back to parent club Manchester United, a new set-piece specialist will need to be found.

“Cooper’s side were impressive defending at set-plays and equally adept at capitalising on weakness of their opponents from dead-balls – see Joe Worrall’s goal versus Leicester City for reference. Again though, much depends on whether they can find a replacement for Garner so that ammunition can be provided for Yates, Worrall and Scott McKenna.” – Mark Sutherns

What do you think about 5-3-2 ?

because defenders have the highest value.

    Raya
    Trent, Cancelo, James, Perisic, Gabriel
    Salah, Diaz, Bruno G
    Haaland, Jesus

    4.0GK, 2 x 4.5 mids, 4.5 fwd

I think we all agree that defenders are the best value but 5 at the back is really inflexible and could cause problems. I love your team but personally I've gone for Ramsdale in goal and Neto in goal over Raya and Gabriel.

Neto in goal now the love in has officially gone too far!

Yeah. Makes sense. I just worry that more goals seems to fly in at the start of the season which will reduce the premium defenders output.

Very similar to my latest draft. Agree about the inflexibility, especially if we need to jump on another midfielder. But open to the risk at the mo.

      Hey fella
      Thoughts on this one?

      Travers
      Trent - Cancelo - Jonny - Chilwell - Gabriel
      Son - Diaz - Bowen - Mount
      Haaland

      Bench : 4m / Murphy / Archer / Taylor

      Thank you :p

        Strong midfield.

For 5.0 I consider someone that could get more attacking returns than Gabriel.

        Trippier or Doherty

I had a quick first draft and to be honest it seems very straightforward this year?

Maybe something changes between now and early August, but it appears that you can build a 1st eleven of proven FPL assets and stick the armband on Salah.

          Mendy,

          Trent, Robertson, Cancelo. James, Chilwell

          Salah, Bowen, Maddison, Saka

          Mitrovic

          Forster, Andreas, Greenwood, Archer

The first category has several options.
Castagne, Justin, Coufal, Dunk, White, Jonny

              Agree with the other two.

Me too. Just to clarify, in the 4.5m defender category, there are solid defenders with no attacking dimension (like Tomiyasu, White), and ones with attacking intent but maybe more vulnerable at the back (eg the Leicester boys). Decide what kind you want.

His dad scored a shedload of goals when Ipswich got promoted to the PL in 2000. Then scored 0 in the PL! I hope that Brennan does not take after him in that regard. He looks a much better player than his dad to be fair.

Am I correct in that David Johnson got the Tractor Boys promoted and then Burley fancied Marcus Stewart more once they reached the top flight? At the time it was slightly quirky to me why Ipswich sold their main goal getter to a Div 1/Champ club if that makes sense

Yeah that's right. DJ got injured at the end of the promotion season and Stewart came in and did brilliantly. He was definitely unlucky to not get more chances when we were in the PL but Stewart banged in 19 goals and we almost made the CL so can't argue with the manager for that!

Yeah agreed compared to us but I remember being happy to see no Salah, Mane, TAA or Robbo. To be fair on the day we had chances - the difference really was that you took yours. I remember being nervous when Diaz came on but he did very little and towards the end we were definitely on top just couldn't finish anything.

Ah so good to be back in the Prem - it's been too long without regular games like this! I'm old - I actually remember when we were good lol

I understand Haaland has been ripping up the German leagues but always injured (growing fast getting ligament/ muscle problems - supposedly grown another inch since last measured!) & we all remember WERNER who didn’t have Werner for the start & he was cr4p.

Both will have some success this season i reckon but play the fixtures with BJ

Perisic will get rotated a lot especially around champions league. But still his attacking output should make up for any cameos

Similar to what I Just wrote about Robbo and Diaz, I don't thin there'll be a vast difference between Cancelo and Laporte, so If you need 1 million for elsewhere, the cheaper one should do fine.

Might depend on cucurella. Playing left back increases cancelos attacking potential. If cucurella is able to establish himself on the left i think cancelo is less appealing. Hes still a good pick, just a matter of whether he is as good as the pool full backs or a bit behind

The thing is there was a gargantuan 40 points difference between them.

            Both were nailed

Laporte got 4 goals (and 2 assists off the top of my head)

So Laporte's ceiling is 160-180ish, whilst Cancelo can go for Trent territory and beyond

          Good morning

          Any thoughts on this one?

          Mendy; Gazzaniga
          TAA; Cancelo; James; Tomiyasu; Mings
          Salah; Coutinho; Ward-Prowse; Saint-Maximin; Colback
          Haaland; Jesus

I think Saint-Maximin could do well this season with a better NEW side and he now is listed as a midfielder, so could be a good value pick overall... Anyway a lot of other MF options around the 6.5 range, so I am not so concerned for those two spots...

Na potter loves to tinker. Lots of competition in that squad and formation changes to suit opposition.
He is seemingly first choice though based on strong form last season. Decent punt for 5.5
Personally id go for mwepu instead

Smart. For me it's Diaz + 4.5 def or Robertson + 5.5 mid. Only problem I'm facing is the 5.5 mid pool is worse than the 4.5 def pool.

          Henderson, Forster

          TAA, Laporte, Chilwell, Trippier, 4.0

          Salah, Bowen, Diaz, Mount, Martinelli

          Jesus, Toney, 4.5

No city attack so could change any of the 8 mil+ midfielders to Foden but I think Mount and Bowen's minutes are more secure. Thoughts?

          Fodder bench.

4.5s - Pereira / Greenwood (Leeds) / hopefully another 4.5 mid option presents themselves.

Think early season with a WC probably going to be played early due to Nov/Dec unlimited transfers, a weak bench is a calculated risk worth taking.

Really not keen on Mandy in goal considering the changes Chelsea need in defence.

Robbo over Trent is a tactical risk. Trent is massively owned, but can see Robbo matching (or based on end of last season), surpass him over the short term. Think it’s a minor risk until first WC.

Warming to the idea of having him and Perisic for Spurs attack.

Basically all I’m doing now is rotating 4 spots, Perisic, Kulu, Jesus and Mitrovic with different combinations, some with Kane, some with Son, or this with neither.

Nottingham Post review of Forest players last night.

          I've just picked out the likely suspects from an FPL perspective but full article here;
          https://www.nottinghampost.com/sport/football/football-news/nottingham-forest-v-coventry-city-7309026

          * Dean Henderson: Comfortable with the ball at his feet. Didn’t have too much to do, but probably be a little disappointed with the goal he did concede.
          * Joe Worrall: Constantly talked to his teammates and looked to push forward. Some solid tackles.
          * Steve Cook: Called upon by Cooper to help organise at the back. Defence was largely untroubled for the most part.
          * Moussa Niakhate: Promising first appearance from the defender. Looked good in possession.
          * Giulian Biancone: Nice goal on his debut. Was constantly urged to go ‘higher’ by Cooper - and it paid dividends.
          * Ryan Yates: Constantly looking to get involved, harrying the opposition when they had the ball.
          * Jack Colback: If anyone was going to get a yellow card in a friendly… No holding back from the midfielder.
          * Joe Lolley: Gave the bench the thumbs up after receiving treatment for a knock, but was taken off shortly after. Hopefully just as a precaution.
          * Taiwo Awoniyi: Physical presence caused problems. Involved in the opener with some good play in the build-up.

Note also Grabban is currently a free agent and atm is not going to resign for Forest.

I'm assuming so - honestly not sure but I'm guessing Nicholas Ioannou might have from the line up 1st half. 2nd half was kids. Either that or Colback did and Ioannou played CDM but neither will longer term barring injuries when Colback can in an emergency.

I much prefer a Citeh defensive double up over a Pool one. May seem strange to some

But tbh a lot rests on Diaz. If he's not going to be a great option then I'd go for a Pool defensive double up

The only concern with a Citeh defensive double up is preventing a double of KdB and Haaland, which atm is unlikely, but even so

I can sure. But I like Saka better.

What do we think of this....?

          Henderson, Forster

          TAA, Laporte, Chilwell, Trippier, 4.0

          Salah, Bowen, Diaz, Mount, Martinelli

          Jesus, Toney, 4.5

No city attack so could change any of the 8 mil+ midfielders to Foden but I think Mount and Bowen's minutes are more secure. Thoughts?

          A) Saka, 4.5 ST (541)
          B) Jesus, 4.5 mid (532)

A gives an extra 8m mid slot, B gives an extra bench option…

          Raya (4.0)
          Trent, Cancelo, James, Chilwell, Perisic
          Salah, Diaz, _____, Neto (Andreas)
          Haaland, _____, (4.5)

Only thing I'd say is with 5 subs I think depth of our squads isn't as important. You'll likely get cameos from your starting 11 worst case.

B - don't leave yourself with only 1 playing striker as if they don't show for any reason you field 10 as you must play 1 striker even if they all get 0 minutes.

Aston Villa with nice early fixtures, maybe a Cash/Watkins double up is on the cards.
