Gameweek 1 of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) is drawing ever nearer and we’re profiling all 20 Premier League teams before the season starts.

After weighing up what Aston Villa players had to offer, we continue our team-by-team guides with Arsenal.

You can check out our Nottingham Forest, Fulham and Bournemouth analysis in our Promoted series (articles that will be refreshed before the big kick-off).

Data in this article comes from our Premium Members Area, which you can access with a discounted subscription for as little as £2.49 a month today.

Arsenal were Champions League material for much of 2021/22 when it came to goal threat but there is a sense that there is still more to come: they had the worst xG delta (-8.16) and second-worst goal conversion (10.4%) of any side who finished in the top half last season.

Perhaps the acquisition of Gabriel Jesus (£8.0m) can help remedy that wastefulness. He’s had a flying start to life at Arsenal in pre-season, although it should be noted that he too has a bit of a profligate track record.

Wobbly defensive periods bookended last season, with no clean sheets arriving in the opening three Gameweeks or from Gameweeks 31-38.

In between, Arsenal racked up an impressive 13 shut-outs in 25 matches.

Keeping together a settled back four was one contributing factor: Takehiro Tomiyasu (£4.5m), Ben White (£4.5m) and Gabriel Magalhaes (£5.0m) started every fixture together from Gameweeks 4-18, with eight clean sheets arriving in this period alone. It was no coincidence that Arsenal’s defensive numbers worsened when Tomiyasu’s fitness issues began earlier this year.

But Aaron Ramsdale‘s (£5.0m) displays were also worthy of note. Earning rave reviews after his initial debut, he had fallen out of form somewhat by the time we reached the end of 2021/22.

OPENING FIXTURES

The best budget FPL defenders for 2022/23 5

Arsenal are actually top of our Season Ticker for fixture difficulty in the first eight Gameweeks, meeting only one of last season’s top seven in that time – and even that is a Manchester United side who struggled for clean sheets in 2021/22. Even with the strides made in pre-season under Erik ten Hag, question marks remain about their defence.

Two newly-promoted outfits – Bournemouth and Fulham – come in Gameweek 3 and 4, while two of the leakier defences of last season, Leicester and Everton, visit the Emirates.

Arteta’s side will be in UEFA Europa League action this season, however, which means they will have to get used to a demanding Thursday-Sunday turnaround between matches. That competition starts after Gameweek 6.

The September international break may be a time to reassess investment in the Gunners, as all of last season’s top four have to be met in Gameweeks 9-15.

personally would rather a low owned as less chance of a price drop if doesnt play. with early WC this player will realistically be stuck third bench so rather not lose 0.1

Neto every week wouldn't be my plan so 2x 4.5's I think
The two suggested are good but tonnes of choice with good options at Arsenal, Brighton, Newcastle and maybe United or Brentford or West Ham
We'd be mid Lamptey bandwagon this time last year!

Sorely tempted by Zinchenko, but looking at his history he's never really been a great source of assists at any team. If he plays in a defensive mid role may actually hurt his assist potential.

I'm very confused on this whole situation. Saw journalists initially acting like the player involved in those incidents, then walking back and apologising on it and him being on tour with Arsenal, and since then I've seen people acting like it was him all along yet he's still with the squad.

You've just pretty much proved my point

Haaland is electric, generational even, but not much use if he's injured one week, hauling the next

You’re talking as if he will be injured though. Plus, with Haaland I can go to any striker if he is injured. If he plays 65 mins in each of the first 4 games he’s a solid option unquestionably.

Not always the case, depends on the players available. Spiderm4t won FPL starting with a skinny 5 of Clyne - Hangeland - Shawcross - Cuellar - Demel when he won FPL

          That would have been 12-13?

It's all relative. The pool of defenders back then was nowhere near the calibre of defenders we have now

          Kompany started that season 7.5!

There is value to be had in cheaper defenders, absolutely

Meslier, TAA, Robbo, Jonny, Martinelli, Bailey, Kane

Alisson, Gabriel, Botman, Ait-Nouri, Son, Neto, Darwin

Not loads of difference in the two imo.

            19-20 he was a behemoth at 9.5

Outside of that, he's a player to target when hot rather than hold indefinitely, but honestly, that's the case even for Salah

Problem with KDB is him playing multiple positions, its hard to justify 12mil for someone when they change positions all the time.
He is ofc world class however and has the potential to be the highest point scorer any season. With Haaland, he might be.

          I mean TAA 7.5 200 points

          Robertson 7.0, VVD 6.5, Alisson 5.5

          170-190 points

          Salah 260 plus captain

This is every single season since they signed VVD four and half years ago

Jota at 7.5 had proven himself in the no.9 at the expense of Firmino this time last year

Yea I just switched him to Robbo, mil cheaper and you know where you stand with Robbo. Maybe its best to wait and see how Liverpool attacks shapes up. As you said, Jota still exists, so does Firmino, gonna be a lot of rotation in attack imo.

Predictability is massive. Was anyone discussing Coady and/or Gabriel this time last year? Even when Wolves emerged, everybody jumped on Saiss/Kilman/Marcal/Semedo (plus Sa). Identifying, picking and sticking with this cheap defenders is insanely difficult, but Pool defenders give us something year on year. Even TAA 20-21 cane away with 160ish

Thing is, I can see the argument for Diaz. By the time you've loaded TAA and now Cancelo, going for Robbo too becomes somewhat prohibitive. Switching to Diaz and a cheaper defender has a lot of merit

Hello chaps, hope you are all keeping well.
I was listening to Az and Mark on FPL Blackbox today and Az mentioned that he hadn’t changed his team all week and that he’s quite happy with his current team, whereas I’m on approximately draft 200 plus and I’m still tinkering, although Az did finish in the top 20,000 last season so he must know what he’s doing 😀
Anyway, I’m digressing, this is my current draft so what do you all think? Cheers for your thoughts
    Raya
    Trent Cancelo Zinchenko Dalot
    Diaz KDB Martinelli Kulu
    Kane Jesus
Subs- Balcombe Bailey N. Williams Greenwood. I’ve got 3, 8 mills so that I’ve got the option to swap for other 8 mill mids or can go down to the likes of Grealish or Rashford is they to start pulling up trees and likewise for the forward from Jesus to Martial, cheers fellas and good luck with your 200 + drafts also 😀

Arsenal keeper or arsenal defender (Gabriel)?

Already got 3 arsenal players. Ramsdale, Odegaard and Jesus.

I don't think Arsenal will concede much for the first 3 fixtures. And the fixtures seem to have an advantage when it comes to set pieces.
So is Gabriel a better option over Ramsdale?

    1. TochanMama

And if yes, best 4.5 option for a keeper? All seem to have terrible fixtures.

Not sure I like any of the £4.5m goalies. Raya is decent but the new Keeper they just bought is a threat. Sanchez has poor fixtures. Pickford plays for a terrible team etc etc

I prefer rams because he is good for bonus and I’d prefer someone more attacking for 5m

Yes Gabriel has threat from set plays but centre back headers have proven difficult to predict in the past, remember when Dias was more attacking, then it was Laporte, same with vvd and matip, even dunk was a big threat at one point but he only scored a single goal last season.

      1. TochanMama

Yes…. Just like dunk scored goals the season before last when he only got 1, in the premier league teams soon realise who the focal point is and they’ll start dealing with him better. He’s not going to get 5 + goals every season

He’s still a solid option, basically I just think there is a lot of luck in centre backs headed goals, some you get some you don’t hard to predict, full back returns are more consistent

I remember having Webster last season for his 15 pointer when he bundled on in from a corner, it was just luck

        TAA - Robbo - Cancelo - Trippier
        Mahrez - Maddison - Martinelli - Mount/Sterling
        Jesus - Kane

        Gazza, Nico, Greenwood, Andreas

Just kind of got that 2mil spare. Value wise, I dont think Sterling is worth 2 mil more, its not terrible, I'd prefer Sterling, just not sure its the best use of money.

I suppose this time last year the question would have been (roughly) whether to upgrade a 7.5m MID into Son at 10m, which ultimately would have been worth it (perhaps Jota aside)

    Would you rather be

A, a fish that can fly

B, a bird that can swim

    While you're thinking about that

    Is there more value in
A 4.0m defender (Williams Patterson etc) and an 8.0m mid
    Or
a 5.0m defender (cash cucurella Gabriel etc) and a 7.0m mid (st maximin JWP Neto grealish etc)

    Any advice always welcomed

I feel Tottenham at the start would be high scoring. So having some coverage there makes sense.

Kulu has had decent numbers considering the minutes he's played. And Kane does deliver.
On the other hand, I have enough Arsenal coverage, so Chelsea makes most sense and that being Mount.

So the question is, is it wise to skip Haaland?

Tomiyasu is not guaranteed to start. He is carrying an injury and will be eased in to the squad.
