Millions of pounds worth of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) talent met at the King Power Stadium on Saturday – but how did the key Fantasy targets of Liverpool and Manchester City get on?

Our latest Scout Notes article rounds up the key FPL talking points plus the goals, assists and line-up information from the Community Shield.

FPL pre-season lessons:

LIVERPOOL 3-1 MANCHESTER CITY

  • Goals: Alexander-Arnold, Salah pen, Darwin | Alvarez
  • Assists: Salah, Darwin, Robertson

Match highlights

ERLING HAALAND

The sight of Erling Haaland (£11.5m) slamming a six-yard effort against the crossbar in second-half injury time was soon accompanied by the inevitable FPL mini-exodus.

Haaland’s ownership had dropped by 3% in the four hours after full-time, although that still leaves him in more than one in two Fantasy squads.

“He is strong. He missed it and another time he will put it in the net. It happened – it’s football. He had another goal disallowed because the ball was out of the line. He has this talent and he will do it. I am not concerned or worried about that.

“I would be happy if he scored and we win but we have a long season ahead of us. It is so intense. He is going to help us, I am pretty sure about that.†– Pep Guardiola on Erling Haaland’s late miss

Wasteful finishing and the blank aside, the signs were actually quietly encouraging – despite what you may have read elsewhere.

Haaland’s three shots were all high-percentage chances totaling 1.59 expected goals (xG), and this was against one of the Premier League’s best defences. He even found the net with one smartly taken finish, only for play to be stopped due to the ball being out of play.

Then there were the numerous unrewarded bending runs behind the last line – a la Jamie Vardy (£9.5m) – that demanded through-balls played to him, the type of ‘eye test’ observation that isn’t captured by the Opta data-bods.

As much as anything, it looked like City need to adapt to him rather than vice-versa; the usually dead-eyed Kevin De Bruyne (£12.0m), strangely, was guilty of not picking him out on a couple of occasions.

It may not come as soon as Gameweek 1 (match fitness seems to be an issue, for starters), so you can understand the temporary loss of faith, but a hatful of goals in 2022/23 looks inevitable.

“Love watching him live. It’s brilliant watching him. His movement is outstanding and it is only a matter of time, especially when City get that sharpness back, going forward. There’s goals to come. His movement is unbelievable.” – Roy Keane

DARWIN NUNEZ

The Liverpool starting line-up for the Community Shield was fairly easy to predict, with Roberto Firmino (£8.0m) starting through the middle as he so often does in matches of this magnitude, but Darwin Nunez‘s (£9.0m) chances of leading the line for Liverpool in Gameweek 1 now look a bit better.

His four-goal substitute appearance against RB Leipzig was followed by another match-turning cameo here, with the Uruguayan winning a late penalty that Mohamed Salah (£13.0m) converted before wrapping up the victory with a close-range header.

Darwin had more shots than any other Liverpool player on show despite playing just half an hour, with the Uruguayan thwarted in another one-on-one situation by Ederson (£5.5m).

Although they are different players, there are FPL parallels here with the Diogo Jota (£9.0m) of last season: a worry over minutes and rotation but underlying ‘per 90’ stats that threaten to be almost as good as Salah’s.

Klopp may still opt to ease Darwin into the fray even against a defence as suspect as Fulham’s, with his quotes below about “impact”, being “patient” and getting “better with time” placing doubt over a start, but he immediately looks more of a natural fit with Liverpool than his fellow man-bun modeler does at City.

“It was good, it was really good. It is clear it will get better with time. We live in a world where everybody gets judged on first sight and that’s not helpful for nobody, but it happens constantly. We were today – both teams – not at 100 per cent of their physical, usual situation, if you want. But in the first few games [of pre-season] we were not even close to the fitness level of today.

“When he came on, we passed each ball for him to chase it and after the third ball he was completely killed and then everybody judged his first touches and these kind of things. It’s just a joke, but we have to live with that, he will deal with it brilliantly, we are patient, and we know he can do good stuff. I liked his impact today; I liked the impact.” – Jurgen Klopp on Darwin Nunez

SALAH AND THE REST

Salah interestingly took Liverpool’s spot-kick despite James Milner (£4.5m) being on the pitch; it appears to have been Milner who had the final say in the past, suggesting the veteran is now increasingly happy to hand over penalty-taking duties to the Egyptian even when both are on the field of play.

The lively Salah ‘assisted the assister’ for both his penalty and Liverpool’s third goal, also setting up the equally impressive Trent Alexander-Arnold‘s (£7.5m) deflected deadlock-breaker.

Luis Diaz (£8.0m) was quieter, as he has been throughout pre-season, so it still may be a little premature to mention him in the same breath as Andrew Robertson (£7.0m) in discussions around the third Liverpool spot in our FPL sides, particularly when the cheaper Scot is so prominent in the opposition area – here the left-back not only assisted Darwin’s strike but also nodded a glorious chance of his own wide from close range.

As for City, Phil Foden (£8.0m) got his first minutes of pre-season as a second-half substitute after missing the tour of the US. Foden’s lack of action has meant that Riyad Mahrez (£8.0m) and Jack Grealish (£7.0m) have had a chance to lay down a marker for one of the Gameweek 1 wide roles but they both flunked their auditions at the King Power and were hooked before the hour mark, with replacements Foden and rookie Julian Alvarez (£6.5m) going on to be involved in the City equaliser.

Joao Cancelo (£7.0m) meanwhile was stationed at left-back, where the consensus seems to be that he appears less effective, although let’s not forget that the bulk of his 11 FPL assists last season came from that very position.

Liverpool XI (4-3-3): Adrian, Alexander-Arnold (Milner 74′), Matip, Van Dijk, Robertson, Fabinho, Henderson (Elliott 74′), Thiago (Keita 84′), Diaz (Carvalho 89′), Salah (Jones 90′), Firmino (Nunez 59′).

Manchester City XI (4-3-3): Ederson, Walker, Dias, Ake, Cancelo, Rodrigo, De Bruyne (Gundogan 73′), Bernardo, Mahrez (Foden 58′), Grealish (Alvarez 58′), Haaland

Bit hard to judge city assets on that performance. They are clearly off the pace.

Them being off the oace is noteworthy in itself. Not like GW1 against West Ham is *that* easy.

But my main take away was that I don't trust the gametime of any of the mid-price City mids yet.

        You never can.

So rather than KDB may as well play it safe with Salah.

    4. Only Liverpool are shorter odds to win in GW1 than Man City - certainly should be a different game than yesterday.

    A) Walker, Mount, Wilson
    B) Dalot, Colback, Haaland

For context, weakest other players are Greenwood, A.Periera, and Neto.

    Any responses appreciated!!

      A.

Only one of those two options has a player is isn't guaranteed (and is arguably unlikely) to start. Meanwhile the other has one of the best FPL options of all time who will also be the most popular captain that week.

Looked at something similar myself with dalot/Ram and Meslier/Walker. I think for the first 5 or so gws, Mes/Kyle is easily the better option so if you’re convinced on Persic I’d go with that combo.

My thought-provoking strategic RMT got bottomed on the last article...

I feel like it's an old skool strategy, certainly not a popular one this season it seems, but is anyone else a fan of playing with a "good bench" formation?

Perhaps even more controversially I'm funding my good bench, and the rest of my team, by going with no premium defenders. No TAA, Cancelo or other City or Liverpool defenders. Instead I have 5 decent defenders who will give me 3 or 4 good fixtures every week.

    Currently that looks like this:

    Mendy Ward
    Trippier Gabriel Cash Dunk Ait-Nouri
    Salah Son Saka Mount KDH
    Jesus Toney Solanke

GW1 bench: Ward Toney Gabriel Dunk. Or I might Bench Boost...

If BB GW1, consider Toney to Mitrovic and Ward to a playing 4.5. Toney without Eriksen may not be such a good pick this season.

It wouldn't surprise me to see Vardy at the top of the forwards list for points scored after the first 4GWs. I'm playing with 1 up top and investing heavily in defence and midfield so Vardy just doesn't suit my structure.

He is a good option. I might start with him and 2.0 itb for flexibility.

Who is the best 4.5m defender to play each week?

Already have 3 Arsenal - currently on Jansson

              Defence is currently

              Sanchez
              TAA Cancelo Gabriel Jansson (Williams)

              Thanks in advance

Lots of strong options at 4.5

I'd definitely recommend Trippier instead of Gabriel and then White.

Otherwise I'd actually say Botman or Dunk.

              Sanchez (Steele)

              Salah-Son-Bruno G-Martinelli-(Andreas)

I feel their first 3 games are against low scoring opposition. Also Mings lost the captaincy, might have something to prove.
Finally worried about who of Arsenal 4.5 will start.

Good point made in the article about Diaz & Robbo. The only advantage Diaz has over Robbo is that he occupies an 8.0 midfield slot & can be moved to another mid in the same price bracket if he doesn't fire.

Yup, I agree that’s the only positive. The 8m midfield has so many nice options, not have the ability to move easily it troubling me … I would prefer Robbo but the options your left with in the cheaper midfield slot are not so tempting.

Good midfield options in the £5.5-6.5m range will emerge as the season progresses, though. Just got to recognizer them early and be ready to jump on them.

              Appreciate your thoughts! 303rd draft...
              Big at the back!

              Mendy
              TAA, Robbo, Cancelo, James, Gabriel
              Salah(c), Saka, Mount, Grealish
              Jesus

Bench: Mateta, andreas, archer, Gk 4.0

Worried about the lack of no 11,5 fwd which means no cover for kane, haaland...

I've a very similar team at the moment and the lack of Haaland and Spurs is the big weakness. My thoughts are that you can't have them all. If you go with this structure, I think you have to be patient but also not be afraid to play WC in GW4 if it all goes belly up. You have to back yourself that the value is in defence and midfield.

With n early WC made possible this season, we can gamble a little. We are all thinking in very similar ways. I have found Bailey over Neto making it easier to get opportunities, but do I trust him?

You might need a 304th with Mount, Grealish and Mateta to consider (smile)
I see the Gabriel/Mendy appeal but I favour Ramsdale and a Spurs back in their place; thus keeping Arsenal in the defense and covering Spurs who could go mental on the flanks.
After all that, not much wrong mate.

So little spoken about Citeh defenders.
              Walker/Stones/Ake conundrum.
Out of those, Walker seems to be assured of the next couple of starts. So many choices at the back in FPL and with Robbo looking the pick over Diaz, Walker could fit in a 5 quite well.
The conundrum in the Spurs game remains where Perisic and Doherty can claim a similar spot to Walker, albeit for different reasons.
Who are you back 4's or 5's.?
By the way, how do you use the keyboard to spell Perisic correctly?

                My back 5 is currently:

                TAA, Robbo, Cancelo, Perisic, Gabriel.

I think TAA, Robbo and Cancelo don't need an explanation.

Perisic is a fun pick. Could be risky with Conte's comments, but I think his potential is huge and it'll be nice to have an interest in Spurs games.

I think an underestimated aspect of Arsenal's pre-season has been the defence. They have looked solid at the back and they have very nice fixtures. Gabriel has good set piece threat and is nailed: a 15pter isn't out of the question for him.

Walker I don't like that much. Feels like he has a ceiling of 6pts and I'm not sure he's completely nailed (could see Ake playing LB with Cancelo RB.) Also he feels like a transfer waiting to happen and City mightn't be at their defensive best for the first few GWs anyway (no Laporte, limited preseason).

Trippier and Digne/Cash are decent options, I just don't like the fixtures that much for either.

What you write is reading my mind. My thoughts on Gabriel though is Ramsdale could be good and takes up one Arsenal spot, leaving more potential in defensive spots. There will always be caveats.

I've had Ramsdale in a few drafts too with Jonny or Neco as the 5th defensive slot and playing a 4-5-1. But if I'm going 5-4-1 I think I'll stick with Gabriel and either Sa or Ederson (if I can stretch to him).

I was surprised to see walker getting forward for a few crosses in the CS. Maybe part of the overlapping FBs tactic spoken about in the article about City a few days ago. Maybe worth it?

(Or maybe I was getting him mixed up with Mahrez. I didn't have my glasses on for the whole match...)

Walker will have a low ceiling but at 5 mil, we can afford to bench him and if he misses games a bench player can come on. In other words, he is cheap enough to float between a back 4 and 5 or rotate.

              Steele / Andreas / 4.5 / 4.5

Really liking this draft if I can resist the Kane/Haaland FOMO. Surely 2 x 8.0 can outscore a Kane/Neto combo for example.

                Some thoughts.

                * Salah didn't have a great game, but still ended up with a goal and assist.

*Liverpool haven't had a CF capable of scoring lots of goals for a while, will this impact Salahs points total, or enhance his assists?

*Would Diaz/ Robbi and Nunez cover no salah?

*Would you treat TAA as a genuine captain option this season? Because I would.
