Our write-ups of the Gameweek 17 action begin with the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) talking points from Arsenal v West Ham United, Aston Villa v Liverpool and Southampton v Brighton and Hove Albion.

The numbers and graphics you see in this article are from our Premium Members area, where you can access Opta player and team data for every single Premier League fixture.

WASTEFUL DARWIN

Darwin Nunez (£9.0m) missed a host of chances at Villa Park, yet goals from Mohamed Salah (£12.8m), Virgil van Dijk (£6.5m) and Stefan Bajcetic (£4.4m) spared the former Benfica man’s blushes.

The Uruguayan continually got into the right positions, racking up six goal attempts, five shots inside the box and a whopping four big chances. However, through a combination of wrong calls and poor finishing, departed the pitch on 87 minutes with just two points.

Adding to his owner’s frustration, he did, in fact, tee up Bajcetic for Liverpool’s third, but was denied an assist after his cross was intercepted, with the youngster picking up the loose ball.

“Different things, of course it is like this, you are a human being and it doesn’t go easy that he can now close his eyes, hit the ball, and have it go in. Strikers have that from time to time, he didn’t have that yet, but I’m now not only since yesterday in the business and I had some strikers around and I know the start [of] the scoring at the beginning is really not important. There are so many other things that are much more important, because in the end you look back [and] you cannot imagine how [many] big chances they missed in the beginning when I work with them, you just have to stay calm.

We are completely calm… what I really love and it’s so special that in the third goal, I think pretty much everybody here, if you’re ever in a situation like that, after the game he had where he just missed the last little touch to score a goal, we all would have just hammered the ball and try to force it. And he passed the ball to Stefan, so we can score the third goal, that makes him really special, the work-rate he put in, the spaces, the depth he creates for us. Pretty much he’s unstoppable in the moment when we keep the ball and pass it in the right moment, there’s no defender who can really catch up speed-wise. I know all the stories around and it’s all fine, but we are completely calm, everything will be fine. He played an exceptional game tonight and we won 3-1 and that’s all that counts.” – Jurgen Klopp on Darwin Nunez

Elsewhere, Salah produced his fourth double-figure haul of the season, courtesy of a goal, assist and maximum bonus.

As a result, the Egyptian is now averaging 8.5 points per start across his last four appearances.

FULL-BACKS IMPRESS

FPL review: ...

Liverpool full-backs Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.2m) and Andrew Robertson (£6.8m) both turned in encouraging displays at Villa Park.

The latter supplied the assist for Liverpool’s opener, yet it was Alexander-Arnold’s stunning outside-of-the-boot pass that helped create it.

Given how many opportunities the Reds afforded Aston Villa, which included four big chances, it might be too soon to suggest the pair are ‘back’. However, in Robertson’s case, it’s worth noting he’s consistently delivering points despite the lack of clean sheets.

Indeed, the Scot has four assists in as many appearances from Gameweek 14 onwards, a period which has seen him create 14 chances, at least three more than any other FPL defender:

ARSENAL SHARING OUT THE POINTS

Arsenal underlined their title credentials with a 3-1 comeback win over West Ham United at the Emirates.

Bukayo Saka (£8.0m), Gabriel Martinelli (£6.8m) and Eddie Nketiah (£6.5m) got the goals, which means the Gunners’ have now won their last 10 Premier League home matches.

The trio returned nine, eight and six points respectively, yet were outdone by Martin Odegaard (£6.4m), who supplied two assists and maximum bonus, resulting in 11 points.

The Norwegian has a remarkable three double-figure hauls in his last four outings and across the season, has more points (88) than any Arsenal player. He also has the best NPxGI tally among fellow Gunners’ midfielders, with a further six shots and five chances created in Gameweek 17.

Elsewhere, Nketiah looked lively in the absence of Gabriel Jesus (£8.0m), with Mikel Arteta talking up the forward post-match.

“I just gave him a big hug because he totally deserved that with the play he played. He showed his strength, quality and timing, the composure of the finish. It was an outstanding performance from him. He has been trying in the last few games and has the capacity to score. We see it every day in training and that will give him confidence.” – Mikel Arteta on Eddie Nketiah

Having suffered defeat at the Emirates, West Ham have now lost four matches in a row and 10 from their first 16 league games in 2022/23, with the result leaving them just one point above the drop zone.

SAINTS SLUMP

Southampton have slipped to the bottom of the Premier League on the back of their 3-1 loss at home to Brighton.

In a display full of errors, Gavin Bazunu (£4.5m) gifted the visitors the opener, before Romain Perraud’s (£4.4m) own goal doubled Albion’s lead.

Nathan Jones – taking charge of just his second Saints league game – experimented with different systems, shifting from a 4-3-3 to a 4-4-2, 4-2-3-1 and a diamond, yet the changes failed to have the desired effect, with their right side particularly vulnerable.

“We gifted them two goals today and then that gives them confidence to do what they do and they keep the ball very well. We never really gave ourselves a chance of winning. We didn’t do the basics well enough and didn’t deserve anything from the game. We have to make sure we have a foothold in the game and at the minute we’re not giving ourselves a chance. Goals change games, goals change momentum, goals change attitudes, and that’s what happened today. We need to do certain things better and we will work religiously on that.” – Nathan Jones

Now, Jones will be desperate to tighten his side up, given that only Bournemouth have conceded more goals than Southampton in 2022/23.

They’ve also managed just one clean sheet all season, a stat which will encourage owners of Aleksandar Mitrovic (£6.8m) and Andreas Pereira (£4.6m), who they meet on Saturday.

“If you don’t defend the box well enough in the Premier League, you’re going to struggle. We’ve only kept one clean sheet all season and that’s something we have got to change.” – Nathan Jones

As for Brighton, they failed to win any of their first five league games under Roberto De Zerbi, but have since won four of the following six.

Here, they cruised to victory on the south coast, yet owners of Leandro Trossard (£7.1m) were left underwhelmed. The Belgian was effective at opening up space in the final third but failed to register a single shot on goal, despite lining up as a false nine in the absence of Danny Welbeck (£6.5m).

It’s worth noting Brighton will be without Moises Caicedo (£5.0m) for the visit of Arsenal on Saturday, having picked up his fifth caution of the season at St Mary’s. Alexis Mac Allister (£5.4m) also looks set to miss out, leaving De Zerbi without his first-choice midfield pairing in Gameweek 18.

Pretty sure the article I read said that 'he has been missing chances' but is 'a big chance monster' both entirely true. He pointed out Liverpool injuries and increased chance of minutes (which is true). He also advocated Salah and Darwin but said on a personal level he was going just Darwin as not going to captain Salah - also solid advice.

People still have to make their own minds up. I have Darwin and very happy as on another day he gets a haul. Would be worried if not getting chances or if Klopp not happy

Who are you talking to/about? Everyone has seen Darwin play by now, and everyone knows he's not the greatest finisher. But all these shallow critiques seem to assume that there's no skill involved in getting into the positions he does. If you'd ever played up front you'd realise its not all about finishing - this can be easily learned. But movement off the ball, anticipation, the timing of your runs, the insinct to know where the ball will fall - that's the really hard part.

I remember about 10 years ago, a man named Luis from the same country arrived at Liverpool and the experts all said he is not the best finisher, but they did not watch much of his games in Ajax or Chl. Judging a strikers abilities to finish after 12 games in a new league, seems a bit non-expert quote to me. He is a good finisher, just need some time to get used to it playing in PL.

He clearly is terrible if finishing is supposed to be easy to learn! 😀

I'd argue that finishing is one of the hardest things you can learn. You can't teach strikers instinct or spatial/positional awareness and acting calm under pressure. As soon as you get the ball you have a split second to decide what you are going to do and ensure your body follows

I’m confused. Why have you been asking if he can cover Salah and advocating a Haaland-Kane-Darwin strikeforce in the days running up to yesterday if you think he’s rubbish?

I bet they did. It was a calculated risk, so I'm not sure why people are acting like picking Liverpool striker against Aston Villa without Martinez was a bad and stupid idea. He wasn't even far away from getting points, was he?

Other most popular options were Kane (lack of confidence?), Toney (tough opponent + incoming ban?), Wilson (unlikely to last long with his injury record), Mitrovic (not fully fit according to Silva), Martial (hot and cold), Nketiah (will Arsenal be the same without Jesus and can he replace him?), Adams (long shot), Greenwood (enabler) and that's it I think. Darwin was basically one of the suggestions with pros and cons like the rest of them. One gameweek isn't enough to judge a player you've just picked. Some forwards scored this week and some will score next week - that's just the way it is.

Morning all, back to mediocrity in FPL but I didn't expect much else. Quick question if anyone is willing to help, I've seen a lot of different things going around regarding doubles (seen GWs 19-21 mentioned, possibility of City not getting one of their doubles, possibility of Liverpool and Brighton possibly getting one as well, etc.), is anyone able to clarify what the different possibilities are? Don't want to get my head set on any moves yet until I have a better idea what could happen

City v Spurs (GW20) will be postponed if either side requires an FA Cup replay. All I know about GW21 comes from Crellin - originally this about Brighton:

So what are the reasons why not basically going with the template and mostly chill ?

    Pope
    Trippier White X
    Almiron Salah Martinelli X
    Kane Mitro Haaland

    Fodder Andreas X X

    Basically play

I wouldn't get pope. 6 point merchant as Newcastle are actually good now unlike Burnley. Otherwise I agree, this is the template and will result in greens for days.

        Ya could be the play

Could throw in Kepa James Rashford for next few weeks and then move James and Rashford out for white + Saka

Seems pretty hard to go against no?

Im pretty tempted to just wc my team to that and leave it

But only myself to blame i went anti template and got rid of Salah / Rashford / White / 5min before deadline

Its only a game and Newcastle are really showing Leicester like vibes ( wont win the title but a real cheap source of top 4 options)

Actually time for me to eat my words, Almiron is actually now putting up good underlying stats so basically has it all

Don't panic Virg. A bunch of knee-jerking going on before KDB/Haaland have even played. No one said Salah would never score again. Realistically he's still way off the new benchmark for "essential" set by Haaland. Inevitable returns for KDB/Haaland on Wed would mean points for all the big 4 premiums, and still no easy decision on which to go with. Don't hit the WC with over 20GW left, you'll regret it later

Not really sure what you mean by this. I'm not referring to Liverpool's style/system, just comparing Salah to KDB/Kane/Haaland because that's the decision we have to make & he's still some way behind these others for me.

I stuck with Salah but it was a 50-50 call. City's pending double may well change that.

Although ditching Kane instead of Salah might be the better option. A front three of Haaland-Mitrovic-Toney/Nketiah is not too shabby.

Are you sure you "need" him? I didn't see the game but saw a clip of VVD's goal which looked lucky to be given as his (and thus Salah's assist), not sure if Salah looked back to himself yet or not but it's only one game and he could (probably should) have ended up on the same points as Saka or Martinelli. Going by the rules, my guess is that because Hojbjerg wasn't the intended target for his cross but can't say for sure

Those 5 points Salah was randomly rewarded yesterday took all the joy out of FPL as a non-owner.

What’s the point in playing a game you can’t understand the rules to? Completely random. Life is enough of that as it is.

3 subs were made at 59 though. It wasn't just because he didn't like Bueno. Just part of his tactics I suppose. Shouldn't always happen. But also he is only bench fodder so not much of an issue.

When does the yellow card rule for Mitro turn to 10 yellows from 5? If he is booked in the first game of gameweek 19 does that mean he could miss the 2nd game against Chelsea?!

I think given the upcoming dgw and Peps like for some rotation a case can be made for Cancelo + Haaland and a 2 week Salah to KDB move to cover the dgw

Hence losing foden isnt a high risk

Most will dissagree but im leaning towards a similar type of move

Ultimately you will get a grey if it goes wrong since not many have Foden and if they both keep ticking along you will get a green

Im tempted by just wildcarding to a template based team and correct my errors from yesterday (took 5min to put a team together)

            This seems rather obvious

            Kepa
            James Cancelo Trippier Bueno Patterson
            Almiron Salah Martinelli Rashford Andreas
            Kane Mitro Haaland

Nicely leaves funds to change James and Rashford to more template White + Saka when Arsenal fixtures turn

                  Nice

But i think Cancelo + Mitro + James with their dgw will outscore the Odengard KDB White combo , also i think no need for both Salah + KDB

the team above team i put togther can have KDB for the dgw + wolves for Salah when he has chelsea/ brighton etc

and nicely move on James + Rashford for Saka + white when arsenal go through some tough games ( Brighton spurs newcastle)

                  But nice team i agree

Yeah no Mitro will be scary for me. I gambled because i thought he was injured according to Silva but no hes not 😆 the liar. Im hoping he gets a yellow in one of the next 2. But I'm okay without Cancelo and James tho. It's not like City have great fixtures in the doubles and I'm probably gonna do Shaw to Walker in 20 for the double anyways. And James well I don't wanna double in Chelsea defence and Potters comments about him don't help plus Potter will rotate anyways. He's worse than Tuchel and Pep at that.

Probably plays a part in the game, but Potter said "“The plan is to try to help him build up his minutes, and the next challenge is to build him up in the Premier League, which is not the ideal place to do it. He's got the capacity to do that, but we just need to be clear and careful with the minutes that he play.”

The quotes only came out late last night so it's caught everyone out, realistically he's only back from a difficult injury in a busy period so there was always going to be rotation but this makes it sound like it might be heavier than normal

Really hope so, that Salah haul hurt, even if the goal was a tap in and the assist should have been for an own goal. Having Numez instead of Salah really hurt, but considering giving Nunez the Lei game and change for Mitro for the DGW.

          Thanks

After FA cup ties, which fall between GW 19 - 20. Replay for City or Spurs would postpone their double

After fa cup games, Saturday/Sunday 7th/8th January.

1 week before gameweek 20 deadline

Ok, great, so I better plan to have 2 FT before GW 20, that means I can do 1 transfer now without hesitation. Thanks lads, helped me a lot.

I am looking for Martial to Mitrovic before the price changes, since I might not be able to afford it soon.

I've got 0.2m for that, but considering Foden to Almiron to fund Mitro
