Manchester City’s narrow victory over Chelsea is the focus of our latest Scout Notes piece.

The Citizens are one of two teams who potentially ‘double’ in Gameweek 20, so keen eyes were on Pep Guardiola’s side at Stamford Bridge for any pointers.

The numbers you see in this article are taken from our Premium Members Area, where you can access Opta player and team data for every single Premier League fixture.

WHY PEP RECALLED FODEN, CANCELO + WALKER…

Normality was briefly restored to the Manchester City line-up on Thursday evening as Phil Foden (£8.2m), Kyle Walker (£4.8m) and Joao Cancelo (£7.3m) were handed their first league starts since returning from the World Cup.

There was more mumbo jumbo from Pep Guardiola when he was asked about his teamsheet ahead of kick-off, with even the man himself admitting that the reasons for his selections change from week to week.

“Everybody asked for this lineup, I follow my fans! We’re not going to discover what they mean Kyle and Joao and these people, they come back from World Cup with niggles, don’t come back settled. And Rico [Lewis] and the other guys have been fantastic.

“Before every game the guys ask me the reason why [I select each team], sometimes is not a specific reason why. I want to rotate the team, get everyone involved. Sometimes I pay attention for the opponent, sometimes for the tactics or the quality of the players we have, I don’t care for the tactics today.

“There’s not one specific reason I decide. Since I arrived, I’m not a guy who plays 11 players every time. Because you cannot handle the locker room. When the players don’t play they have to have the feeling they can play at a certain level. 11 months if one guy doesn’t play, it’s not nice.

“I take a look individually how they are when they come back, the happiest by far was Julian [Alvarez]. Step by step, take a look first day, second day, how they’re training. It is important to look at the body language, the mood, how they look. Try to take a good decision with the lineup. Step by step the guys come back to reality and ready to play every game.”

It was a curious tactical set-up from Guardiola, who opted for a 3-5-2/4-4-2 hybrid system with Cancelo pushed high up the right wing ahead of Walker. Foden, meanwhile, was deployed on the opposite flank, with Kevin De Bruyne (£12.5m) supporting Erling Haaland (£12.2m) through the middle.

Effectively ‘out of position’ on the right wing, it all boded well for Cancelo. And then came a half-time withdrawal.

…AND WHY HE TOOK THEM OFF

The new system and the players within it didn’t work. Chelsea were the better team in the first half so off came Cancelo and Walker at the interval, with Foden and Bernardo Silva (£6.8m) getting ignominiously hooked less than a quarter of an hour later.

Guardiola was full of remorse for his Cancelo substitution but Lewis’s fine display and Guardiola’s ongoing praise for the teenager does again call into question Cancelo’s game-time prospects in the provisional Double Gameweek 20.

“I’m so sorry for Joao, I ask him to play in an [unnatural] position. But of course in the second half the impact from Rico, Manuel as well but especially Rico, and our rhythm from minute one was clear.” – Pep Guardiola

“This young boy has the ability and quality to not just play good, but to make his mates better. This is so difficult to find.

“When he came in Rodri played better, Kevin played better, Riyad played better, he has the talent to do this. Since we came back he is playing and right now he is fundamental to us, he’s a key player for us the way we’re playing right now.

“The dynamic for Rico – tac-tac, move, right, left, inside – helped everyone have that rhythm, that’s why he changed the game. He changed the game with his dynamic from minute one.” – Pep Guardiola on Rico Lewis

All of this uncertainty at the back will only raise Ederson‘s (£5.4m) stock ahead of next Friday’s deadline, with the Brazilian the only name we can pretty much guarantee will get game-time at the rear.

As for Foden, a quiet performance was made worse by his replacement, Jack Grealish (£6.8m), beautifully teeing up Riyad Mahrez (£7.5m) within three minutes of the pair’s introduction. It’s now three attacking returns apiece for Grealish and Mahrez since the Gameweek 17 restart, a total only two other FPL midfielders can beat.

Does Foden now get splinters in his backside again in Gameweek 20 after Thursday’s second-half revival? There are two cup games’ worth of information to come before we get to the next FPL deadline but right now, based on his positional rivals’ purple patches and the counter-attacking styles of United and Spurs, Foden would have to be third-favourite to get one of the two wing spots.

“All the managers try to make the subs to improve the team. Sometimes you see a team who are losing but are playing good, why should we change when I have the feeling we’re doing well, why should we do it?

“Today after 20 minutes I realise I don’t like what I’m seeing. Why we have to wait? That moment I spoke with Rodo and Enzo and said we have to move something, to change something, otherwise it will be more difficult.

“Everyone saw it, in the first minute of the second half it was a completely different Man City, another rhythm, another game, and our recovery with everyone in their position.” – Pep Guardiola

MOUNT INJURY LATEST

Missing out on Thursday was the most-bought Chelsea player of Gameweek 19, Mason Mount (£7.6m), while Raheem Sterling (£9.7m) and Christian Pulisic (£5.7m) both limped out of the contest before we’d reached the midway stage of the first half.

The good news for Mount owners is that he would appear to have a good chance of facing Fulham next Thursday, if the below is true.

“It doesn’t make it any easier. It’s too soon [to know the extent]. Raheem, it was his first action in the game, a strange one, a back heel. Christian’s, he was running at full pelt and it’s a blocked shot and contact with his knee. Fingers crossed it’s not too bad.

“Mason [Mount] got a kick yesterday in training, again we’re hopeful for the weekend but it’s one of those things at the moment. I’ve never experienced anything like it and I’d ideally not want experience it here. But it is what it is, I have to just carry on.”

CUCURELLA COMPETITION?

There were blanks across the board for Chelsea assets but it was a decent enough display against the reigning champions, whose 21-goal striker was largely nullified by a defence that hadn’t completely convinced under Potter previously. Kevin De Bruyne (£12.5m) also looked more like he had chocolate coins in his belly than fire, although did improve after the break.

Above: Haaland was deemed to have had a ‘big chance’ against City but the 72nd-minute opportunity needs to be put in context, as the ball across from De Bruyne was too far in front of him; think Paul Gascoigne v Germany in Euro ’96

Marc Cucurella (£5.2m) is the most-selected member of the hosts’ backline in FPL but there might be a few nervous owners waiting on the west London derby teamsheets next Thursday. Cucurella was partly culpable for the City goal and was substituted soon after, with his replacement, rookie Lewis Hall (£4.4m), really catching the eye.

Carney Chukwuemeka (£4.3m) and Omari Hutchinson (£4.5m) were also thrown on even though the result was all to play for; Potter’s not a manager scared to blood youngsters when he deems fit, so just because Ben Chilwell (£5.8m) remains out, it doesn’t mean that Cucurella is nailed in the mean-time.

“Young players, starting out, and it’s a big responsibility to represent this club but they did it well. Lewis has played a couple of games for us and has been fantastic.” – Graham Potter

Hadn't even thought about wildcarding next GW before coming on here today.

My team looks pretty good still but the thought has entered my head now.

There will be better DGW anyway right.

If your team's good, ignore the doubles. Top SGW assets can always outscore the appearance points of DGW assets, and that's assuming the DGW asset is nailed for 60+ minutes in both games

Better doubles are coming, yes. I think I saw Crellin mention expecting 25 fixtures to be rearranged

Pep doesnt give a fk about fpl. He is doing what's best for his team and its completely logical.

      Agreed

Just wouldn't consider that starting XI "best for his team", but at least he corrected it unusually early (for Pep), rather than staying stubborn

Usually, but last game was odd.

"Everybody asked for this lineup, I follow my fans!" - Pep

I think he was trying to make a point that Cancelo and Walker shouldn't be starting. It was almost an "I told you so" moment.

That comment from him made me wonder if Cancelo should submit a transfer request

Tbf he's not been good for a while. He was crap at the World Cup and eventually got dropped for Dalot.

Did not realise Rico Lewis was 3.9m, thought he was at least 4.5m which would still have been great, if I don't get him this week then I imagine I will next week

The post-match analysis I watched talked about Rico coming on to play in midfield, with a huge impact there

I didn't quite understand that, but then I didn't focus on him

Did Pep switch to 3 ATB or something? I thought it became a balanced 4-3-3 with the subs, after the failed 4-1-4-1 experiment

I think it was much like the first half, when in possession they sat with 3 at the back (Ake, Stones, Akanji) and Lewis slotted into midfield but was nominally at RB, so when City had the ball (after the Foden + Bernardo subs) it was something like:

          Akanji Stones Ake
          Lewis KDB Rodri Gundogan
          Mahrez Haaland Grealish

Put it this way, despite Chelsea's pressure late on and Lewis only playing one half, he attempted 27 passes in that time and was successful with all of them. If City keep a clean sheet he's going to look good for bps

                Awesome

I might replace Akanji with him down the line, if he stays nailed

I know Akanji will be nailed, but this kind of full-back should offer more attacking threat

I just want to stop seeing Pep refer to Walker's fitness as the only reason he's not playing so much (he said so again last night, post-match). Giving it a few GWs

He said he wants Walker back because he's so important etc. etc, perhaps he was just not really able for much more than 45. I would imagine given his age that Lewis will be managed but he did start 3 in a row before this and then play 45 here, might still be worth a shot

My backline's settled for now, so I'll watch with keen interest

He could very well be the next bandwagon, and for good reason

I think the higher priority has to be the guy who won't start

Cancelo goes first, unless you're sure Kane will explode vs those two good defences or that Cancelo is somehow still first choice after what's happened since the World Cup (Dalot starting over him, and then Ake/Lewis being preferred to him) or you've got someone you can bench Cancelo for

Not knocking Kane as an asset. I consider him an important asset for the season. Just not top priority right now if Cancelo is still in your starting XI

I'd go Schar if you're not already tripled on Newcastle

The other great options don't look locked in for a great GW20, yes

Don't mind Mirror Mind's hit suggestion either. Depends on how patient you want to be with Darwin, because we at least expect 2 appearance points unlike with Cancelo

I'd keep one member of that backline and lose three of the attackers, so this looks like a WC to me, yeah

It's possible to ride with a few hits if you consider a later WC to have more value, but I think we're already in BB territory with the cheap options available and the death of the premium defender, so the usual late WC argument might be moot

BB23 really stands out for fixture quality

He wasn't great yesterday, but he was in a strange position where he was hugging the right touchline around the halfway mark for most of the game. Was in a similar role against Liverpool too and in both games it nullified his threat. Thing is, City face some very big games now (Man Utd, Spurs twice, Arsenal), is he going to play him there again? It seems like he's fully prioritising controlling games and not letting them get out of hand lately, less goals conceded and less goals scored. I'm beginning to think even Haaland's goals may drop off a bit. I'm just not sure on KDB, I'll keep this week of course but he may be gone the next

Stats say some variance - his xGI is still 7th of all outfield players since the resumption and his delta -1.93 is higher than anyone except Darwin. But I have to say his touch & timing do look off, and even his crossing is a little inconsistent in its accuracy. Even like this he's never too far from an assist, and I'm always inclined to patience with him, but maybe he's not quite as nailed in my team (from GW21) as I thought he would be.

                Nope. Yellow cards are competition-specific

He needs a yellow vs Arsenal to miss the City game. Only a red card in the Cup will affect his Arsenal availability

Morning all, 2 FT and 0.5 ITB.

              A - Patterson > Botman and roll 1 FT
              B - Salah & Greenwood > Kane + 5.9mid
              C - Salah & Mitro > Kane & Odegaard

              Kepa
              Gabriel - Trippier - Shaw
              Salah - KDB - Martinelli - Rash - Almiron
              Haaland - Mitro

              Ward - Walker - Greenwood - Patterson

Walker to Stones/Akanji/Rico (ordered by how nailed they are) if City keep their double. If not, Walker to Schar. Either of them over Shaw, unless Palace/Leeds gets added as a fixture

                ...and roll the other FT

You might choose to sell KDB instead of Salah for Kane in GW21. Kane's two fixtures are difficult enough to just watch this GW and then decide

Thanks - seems like great advice. Yes I did shudder when I saw Kane's fixtures despite the DGW. Salah is probably more of a keeper than KDB who I would want to ditch after his DGW

Lewis is competing with Walker too, and Pep keeps talking about Walker's fitness (but not Cancelo's) as the reason for his reduced minutes. That's the only caveat left, tbh. Rico could easily turn out to be the best 3.9m asset possible in this game

I was at the game last night and two things stood out.

Cucu was AWFUL. One of the worst performances I’ve seen in a Chelsea shirt. Lewis Hall changed the game when he replaced and if Potter didn’t notice that I’d be very surprised

Rico Lewis is absolute class. Can see him starting regularly

I'm not sure if this is even a possible scenario (perhaps the PL will ensure they get at least one postponed fixture out of the way next week one way or another), but say Spurs v City is postponed and no other double is announced for GW20. Who are you captaining?

The way City are playing right now I really don't see them coasting to an easy win, there's still a gulf between them but ManUtd are much improved and have a good record against City, and they certainly have players that can threaten them. I'll be quite tempted by Trippier or Saka myself

Liverpool without VVD, still playing our high line. Trossard hat trick nightmare from the same position...

Mitoma (C), Trippier only (VC) because I fear Mitro a bit

But I hope other doubles come, because I really like the look of Rashford (C) vs Palace/Leeds

Akanji is more assured, but limited to 6/8 points

Lewis has emerged as a Cancelo replacement in the grand scheme of things, but he'll have to prove himself every GW for Pep to dump Walker for good. Both are RBs, while Cancelo is actually competing with, err, Ake for LB (and losing)

If Lewis was guaranteed to start or not come on, I'd buy immediately. But too much danger of 59mins or 10min cameos. Along with the obvious danger of taking up a City spot if their form improves. There are also other £4m-ish options pretty much guaranteed 90min if fit.

I hope you're assuming Shaw gets a double, because I wouldn't take a hit for any defender who's about to face just City. Even Trippier and prime Trent

Maybe Schar, if you aren't tripled on Newcastle? Or Stones/Akanji/Rico (risk-appetite-dependent) if City keep their double

Wissa isn't nailed. We need Toney's absence confirmed before going there

Rodrigo ticks along nicely with goals (what could be better?), but I think there might be more explosions and better fixtures from Brighton punts

Still, it could be 50-50 between Rodrigo and Mitoma

Just not Wissa until we know more about Toney

A team with a 75m budget might even be possible now

We've got Mitoma, Ferguson, Summerville, Gnonto, Rico Lewis and Andreas all under 5m, keeping pace with premiums. Add the Kepa-Ward GK combo and prices of the best defenders, and it starts looking silly, really

He's quality. I'm convinced his price is why he is so lowly owned, bought by few then left in the bench by most of his owners. March is getting a good tune out of him.

              Two contrasting situations:

              1. This is not the best GW to buy most of the good assets, because the best teams don't have the best fixtures
              2. This is the GW in which many managers have someone they feel a clear and logical need to sell immediately

It can lead to unnecessary punts or moves that can clearly backfire, like getting/keeping someone just because they have a (clearly bad) double or losing/ignoring someone who has a good SGW

My advice remains: Ignore DGW20. Only buy someone you would have gotten if they had just one of their fixtures this GW. Better DGWs are coming

Think if you keep for longer, the incoming DGW-er is justified as an early adoption regardless of the fixtures

If they're expected to start and do well, definitely buy

I'm not saying all DGW options are bad. I'm even promoting City defs as purchases and giving KDB one more GW. None of us is about to sell Haaland either, and Kane is an easy buy

But that's my point: they have to be players who make sense long-term, not just DGW chasing. I consider getting Doc, Perisic or Hojbjerg and keeping Cancelo/Walker to be DGW chasing

                  Yes. Hence "most"

People already have City and Newcastle players, but these aren't the best fixtures for any of the top teams except Newcastle. Heck, there's the looming Mitro threat against any top team's CS, but I think their attackers might erupt here, like Brighton's vs our high line

City's two games are not the best fixtures

                  Man U faces City

Arsenal attack could thrive against Spurs, but their defence might just have to accept the odd goal when Spurs finally come out to play in the second half

I'm not saying everybody will blank. Just saying the fixture layout might lead to unnecessary punts

GK is the spot I'll spend most transfers on between now and... GW26, with no idea who I'll eventually settle on by GW26

There's no rhyme or reason to keepers this season. The hero of the past 4 GWs might get 3 points per match in his next 6, so I'll just let the DGW terrain guide this one

Another critical factor is if I prefer an outfield triple-up. This is what's keeping me away from Pope and maybe Ramsdale atm

In isolation and based on current info, it's Pope for the next 4

Can't complain about Pope but I imagine Raya will continue doing what he is doing and match or better all the premiums. Just enough clean sheets and plenty of saves with no worries about wasting an outfield slot elsewhere.

Agreed, very happy Raya owner here.

Pope's save points have really dried up, only 3pts in the last 12 GW (Raya 13pts from saves in the same period)

Boelhy is doing a lot of things but didn't think he was picking the team.

Kepa is safe for now but didn't cover himself with glory last night. Still think his distribution will keep him in the team ahead of Mendy.

Ignoring Pep's antics, I think Chelsea defended well last night

Kepa sorts out his feet and dives for that weak Grealish cross or Cucurella continues tracking Mahrez's run, and the story becomes Chelsea's resolute defending for the unexpected CS

Let's see what happens vs Fulham and Palace, but I liked what I saw vs City

Their defence is tragic, especially with Kepa behind them. There’s only Thiago Silva playing well and he can’t bail them out every game.

Thanks, could have gone straight for Odegaard but backed the double and Palace game for him to outscore Odegaard before selling for him. That's him and Kulusevski plus James and Patterson that have got injured now. Before the WC I had a lot of luck that's gone now. Wasn't desperate for Kane either before Nunez got unlucky and the Palace game. Cancelo to Botman maybe?

                Not a WC

Shockingly no one knows about Cancelo so wouldn't have that as a priority with 3 solid options in defence elsewhere. The United fixture blip is short enough.

Mount looks like a mistake though. Big fan of Summerville who would free up enough cash to do what you like pretty much anywhere - just a case of whether it's in one week or two.

Oh yes. But those two also played as RB and LB in the past. If Walker and Cancelo are out of favor right now, and Lewis is coming of age, we could see Lewis-Stones-Akanji-Ake starting twice and then the full-backs changes in the second half. It's pure guesswork of course and impossible to predict. One mistake/incident and a certain player can be dropped.

Stones and Akanji are the CBs. Ake is competing with (and keeping out) Cancelo at LB, while Rico Lewis currently has Walker on the ropes at RB

I think Akanji is the least likely to be benched in the next 2, because he just had his first rest since his first start for Pep and they looked as open as a hungry croc's mouth without him. Still, Stones shouldn't require a rest either

Ake depends on what you think of Cancelo. I think he starts both too

Thank you for this reply. I think that Cancelo has to work harder than ever to earn his starting spot back, and even then he may not be a guaranteed 90 minutes player like in the past. They've got to many good options.

Choosing "the right one" also depends on the Sunday's line-up, but any of them could turn out to be a bargain. We all remember what Stones and Laporte have done in the past and that CB picks can be exciting too. The maverick in me wants to go for Lewis, who has clearly done plenty of things right during the World Cup break and is now very much loved by Guardiola.

At the same time we know that Pep isn't afraid to make subs at half-time, so we're just playing the odds. Maybe we should consider Perisic and Doherty instead. I don't know, it's giving us a lot of food for thought..
