MAGNIFICENT MAHREZ

An inspired Riyad Mahrez (£7.5m) continued his rich vein of form on Thursday, scoring two second-half goals.

The Algerian added an assist and maximum bonus, leaving his small army of owners (4.2%) jumping for joy with a whopping 17-point haul.

Starting his fourth league match since the Gameweek 17 restart, Mahrez has now totalled 39 points in that time, 10 more than Erling Haaland (£12.2m) and 18 more than Kevin De Bruyne (£12.6m).

“Riyad Mahrez, what a player. Before the World Cup, he was on holiday. Now he has realised, ‘Oh!’” – Pep Guardiola

Haaland, meanwhile, ended his mini-drought with a goal, as he powered a header past Hugo Lloris (£5.5m).

As a result, the Norwegian finishes Double Gameweek 20 on eight points.

It is probably a bit below expectation, given that he had scored 14 goals in nine home matches leading up to the double, but some comfort can at least be found from the fact he did not blank, especially for triple captainers.

PEP EXPLAINS LEWIS AND ALVAREZ STARTS

Pep Guardiola responded to Saturday’s derby defeat by making five changes to his starting XI, which saw Kyle Walker (£4.8m), Joao Cancelo (£7.2m), De Bruyne, Bernardo Silva (£6.8m) and Phil Foden (£8.2m) drop out.

Rico Lewis (£3.9m) and Julian Alvarez (£6.0m) were among those who came in, with the latter providing more support to Haaland.

Explaining his decision prior to kick-off, Guardiola said:

“We need a bit more presence in the final third. Close to Erling, players like attacking midfielders to be close to them and we try to, his energy, his movements, his sense of goal, and that’s why he’s in my side.” – Pep Guardiola on Julian Alvarez

“Because the games he played he played really well. We wanted an extra man in the middle and he reads really well his positions, that’s why he’s selected. I know how he plays, he makes his teammates better. I know it’s a big responsibility, playing against Son, Kulusevski, Kane, they’re big stars that they have but he has had brilliant games against Chelsea and Liverpool, we want to attack today and we thought he was perfect for tonight.” – Pep Guardiola on Rico Lewis

Lewis was excellent, it must be said, with Guardiola praising both his full-backs after full time:

“Tell me [about] Nathan [Ake], against Kulusevski – what a player. Salah in the Carabao Cup. 10 duels and he won nine. It’s not in the highlights but without Nathan right now we cannot play good.

Rico [Lewis], 18 years old, was amazing in the Carabao Cup [and] against Leeds, the most aggressive team in the Premier League. He was in the small spaces, tap tap tap. At Chelsea at Stamford Bridge after one minute, he changed the game.” – Pep Guardiola

De Bruyne’s benching, meanwhile, was tactical according to Guardiola.

DEFENSIVE WOES

Man City have now kept just three clean sheets in their last 12 outings in all competitions, all coming against Chelsea.

On Thursday, it was another howler by Ederson (£5.4m) that gifted Spurs their opener, with Lloris later at fault (again) for the first of Mahrez’s goals.

“We have to prepare better, I cannot deny how happy we are but we are far away from the team that we were. Not in terms of play, we played good, but there are many things like competitiveness. We gave them the first goal, and then the second goal is ridiculous. There’s nothing from the stomach, from the guts and we were lucky but if we don’t change we will drop points.” – Pep Guardiola

“Definitely, otherwise we wouldn’t have conceded any of those goals that we have conceded in any of these games.” – Pep Guardiola when asked if a little bit of fire has gone out

Spurs have conceded two or more goals in 12 Premier League fixtures this season – no team has a worse record.

“Compared to last season we are conceding a lot more goals. A lot, a lot. It’s not good and to concede four goals in one half, the second half. This is the first time in my career that one of my teams has conceded so many goals. For sure this is a period we are not so lucky because we are making many, many mistakes, many mistakes, but football is this.

When we concede four goals the first person responsible is the coach. Then the players because I don’t put the mistakes on my players. The mistake first of all is mine because it means that maybe we have to work defensively more to be more compact, like the whole team not only the defenders because when we concede a goal it means the whole team not only the defenders, the keeper or a single player.

If you can see the stats about the goals we conceded this season then you can see that we have conceded a lot of goals. We have continued to score goals but the difference is a big difference. We have to try to find more solidity but when you concede a goal the whole team has to defend much better.” – Antonio Conte

KULUSEVSKI BRIGHT

City were on top for the vast majority of the first half but were sucker punched by two Spurs goals just before the break.

Dejan Kulusevski (£7.9m) netted the first, his seventh attacking return in only 10 starts in 2022/23.

He was close to adding an assist, too, when his low ball across the area found Ivan Perisic (£5.5m), who hit the bar after Lewis got between the ball and the goal.

In his last two matches, Kulusevski has racked up four shots and created five chances for his teammates.

Harry Kane (£11.7m), meanwhile, was belatedly awarded the assist for Emerson Royal’s (£4.9m) strike, when he fired a cross-shot at Ederson which the City ‘keeper could only parry, with the Brazilian scoring from the rebound.

Would you look to any other captain than Haaland?
Im thinking of Kane vs Fulham Away who concede an awful lot of chances through the center
KDB also an option but I prefer Haaland instead
Just thinking that City will score 2 goals and Spurs can score 3 imo

I just TCed Haaland so maybe I’m a little bit disappointed but he isn’t close to hat tricks and things like that imo so the damage might be minimal if he scores and Kane doesn’t

Also a haaland TC’er this week. So relieved he didn’t blank again but very disappointing. I feel he’s lost his momentum and I’ll look at other possible captains with an open mind now

Yes I agree, Wolves may be too easy for him though but the reason I’m into Kane more is bec I think Haaland won’t play 90

Ok but he isn’t that sharp so he can’t score every shot he takes, with KDB he may have better delivery so it’s tough to go against

Martial replacement - Ferguson or Nketiah? Brighton a decent chance for a DGW shortly?

If you're going for a "bargain" third forward then Gnonto isn't a terrible idea either. Brighton and Leeds both have 2 games in hand, but there's a possibility Brighton could blank in 25.

Nketiah so good if you don’t prioritize any other Arsenal mid. Ferguson with Welbeck back I’m not sure he’s gonna keep starting for a lot more

Nketiah would be short term. Jesus due to be back GW 22/23. And what about Trossard? He can play Striker as well. I see him losing his spot in a few weeks. May pay off if he plays well in DGW 22.

I would say if you're investing in forwards, you can't delve in the region of 7 mill to 5 mill. Try to trade for $$ ITB and get players like Mitro and Toney.

I understand the fear of Trossard but I dont think Arteta changes anything in his lineup till he has Jesus back(late February), imo Nketiah is safe for the double but yes Mitro Toney great options

What Pep mentioned in his press conferences is that without Ake and Lewis Coty doesn’t play good. He actually said about Ake that he won 9 out of 10 1v1s against Salah Kulusevski and it’s not in the highlights. Lewis everytime he comes in something changes, he also mentioned that Alvarez also runs a lot.
From what I understand is that Pep now wants to play players with passion and hunger which is missing from the majority of the squad because they won the PL a lot of times so they are not hungry anymore

Could also be trying to light a fire under the other full backs. Lewis shows a lot of promise, but realistically he's currently the third best right back at City.

I think Pep is right about what he says. Imo Lewis brightens up the side and Ake is by far the best defender since the restart. Even upfront Grealish is walking when losing the ball, Foden lost his hunger that he had before being the player he is. KDB and Gundo are not having the stamina to run for 90 mins. This team needs a mix of a few quality players and more youngsters hungry for wins

Leicester have offered Stoke 10m for Subway Socceroo Harry Souttar apparently. Leaves a vacancy for a Harry at Stoke. Very interesting!

Leaders Lounge prediction guru's agree that Souttar can be Leicester captain in less than 6 months and may or may not be head hunted by Super Boehl for approximately £75m.

We tend to get this stuff right.

A) Martinelli + Toney
 (343)
      B) Saka + Ferguson/Gnonto (352)
      C) Raya or DDG
      D) Akanji/Ake or just avoid all City defence?

Suppose it comes down to Saka Vs Toney.

Cheers bud! Yeah I’m really going off City defence, maybe triple on NEW defence? Not sure who I’d go for as that 5th Defender, maybe someone just cheap who plays, especially in GW25

I have been thinking about triple Newcastle defence for a number of weeks because double Newcastle defence makes sense but if you have Trippier, you effectively don’t have Newcastle defence. I have Pope too. I was going to do the move this week but Bruno is injured so I want to see how that affects the CSs and defensive structure before I commit. That doesn’t help you as you need to choose by tomorrow but just my opinion

Yeah I hear ya, having Trippier doesn’t really count for much on his own. Alongside another defender that ups it a little, but to truly gain anything a triple would be nice, and can always bench one if not feeling very overly committed on any certain GW I guess.

Yes. I will give Cancelo this week and then downgrade to Botman. This week I am between Zaha to Mitoma or Marsh, or Mitro to Toney

I think Cancelo deserves one more week I agree, then a move for Botman/Burn certainly makes sense.
I like Mitoma a lot, but feel March could very well be on the end of his assists, so I’ve simply gone for the goalscorer. Mitoma more than capable of scoring though like we’ve already seen.
Personally I’d favour Mitro > Toney as I’d just lost all faith in Mitro, three pen misses now, and not the best fixtures for Fulham, albeit up against a Spurs defence next.

Cheers Knight! So Gnonto instead of Toney then? Something different isn’t it.
Will have 7 as it stands for blank GW 25, not too concerned to be fair, blanks can be overthinked a lot, as long as I have main culprits from Arsenal and City, can always get 9 or 10 out with FT’s or a hit or something.

I like what I see with Gnonto but Toney makes sense for the sensible player. Gnonto takes up my sole differential spot.

Me too, electric player, and I think he’d be a fun player to have in the squad, which would make a nice change to have that ‘fun’ player actually. Toney does make a lot of sense though, could always make a Toney > Gnonto switch. Feel this decision will probs go down to the wire.
Would you agree on abandoning all city defence by the way? 🙂

1FT, defence is really a mess.

Trippier, Shaw ( vs Ars ), Walker ( rotation ), Digne ( red flag ) and Bueno ( MCI )

I really need to do a defensive transfer instead of saving - right? Which defender to get? ( don’t wanna dbl up on new castle now )
