We assess the key Fantasy Premier League (FPL) talking points from two more Gameweek 23 matches, West Ham United v Chelsea and Southampton v Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The numbers you see in this article are taken from our Premium Members Area, where you can access Opta player and team data for every single Premier League fixture.

FELIX THE CATCH

Joao Felix (£7.5m) is the most-bought player of Gameweek 24 at this very early stage of the week, with his goal against West Ham United in the early kick-off and an upcoming home fixture against bottom-of-the-table Southampton a heady mix for the kneejerk brigade.

It often pays to take a deep breath and pause with this here FPL lark; Mykhailo Mudryk (£7.0m) looked like the second coming of Stanley Matthews in his Gameweek 21 debut before delivering two more muted performances.

Chelsea have also got a midweek UEFA Champions League tie against AC Milan to come before we get to the visit of the sorry Saints.

But there’s no denying that Felix has impressed in his very limited pitch-time so far, with a positive Gameweek 19 debut only spoiled by a red card and his latest showing as good as it got from a Chelsea perspective.

FELIX: THE NUMBERS SO FAR

A cutely taken goal from an excellent Enzo Fernandez (£5.0m) pass opened Felix’s Chelsea account and he looked dangerous whenever he got the ball from his number 10 slot, only being denied another strike by an offside flag.

A prominent role at dead-ball situations (both corners and direct free-kicks) supplemented his open-play threat, and you can understand the attention with the following, blank-free run of games upon us:

There were early positive signs that good things are coming from this new-look Chelsea side, although the feelgood bubble was burst by West Ham’s against-the-run-of-play equaliser and the Blues boinged back to their ponderous default mode thereafter.

“You could see in the first half the potential of the team and the possibility of the team and the quality of the team at times. The thing that disappoints is, in the Premier League you can’t control everything all of the time, it’s impossible. When you don’t, you just have to make sure you don’t concede and build again. That’s the bit from a regret from us, the first goal gets West Ham back into the game too cheaply from my perspective. So that’s something for us to learn and the second half is probably more of a reflection of where we’re at in terms of the work we need to do.” – Graham Potter

Reece James (£5.7m) looks (understandably, given his recent lay-off) short of his elite-level, marauding best based on the evidence of the last two Gameweeks. There were glimpses of the old James, with his through-ball for Felix’s offside goal one highlight. And a role as an orthodox full-back, rather than a wing-back, didn’t stop him registering more final-third touches than anyone else on show.

Also at the back, Benoit Badiashile (£5.0m) – omitted from Chelsea’s Champions League squad, to boost his domestic game-time prospects – started yet again and continues to hover on the FPL radar.

All of the above comes with a Potter-sized asterisk; with six first-team squad members due back from injury in the next few weeks and the likes of Mason Mount (£7.3m) warming the bench on Saturday, there’s always the threat of rotation from week to week.

WEST HAM’S CHEAP WING-BACKS

West Ham are unbeaten in three league games, a run that coincided with David Moyes moving to a 3-4-2-1.

The wing-backs in that set-up are dirt-cheap options in FPL, namely Vladimir Coufal (£4.1m) and Emerson Palmieri (£4.0m).

Emerson in fact got on the scoresheet against his former club on Saturday, ghosting in behind a rusty James to bobble home a shot from Jarrod Bowen‘s (£8.0m) flick-on.

“Emerson has greatly improved. I think we’ve been beginning to see a bit more like him. Taken him a bit of time to settle in, a bit like a lot of the players. I think the system we’re playing suits him better as well, but I thought he played better today. The goal, for him to score against his old club is always good for him. I was pleased for him because he’s been steady Eddie, he’s been keeping at it and he’s been getting a chance in recent weeks.” – David Moyes

Both players seem like great options on paper in a defence with the fourth-meanest expected goals conceded (xGC) total this season (Coufal was generally much more forward than Emerson on Saturday, despite the latter’s goal) but be warned, as Emerson could particularly be vulnerable if his manager reverts to a 4-3-3/4-2-3-1.

“Chelsea were much better in the first half and we struggled too, the big thing was we didn’t go further behind because Chelsea threatened us. They had a couple of decisions that went for us, the offsides might have been tight or they might have been clear, I’ve not seen them either, but I was pleased. I thought we improved, for 20 minutes of that we found it very difficult against Chelsea. They were good and we weren’t as good, we didn’t defend well in the opening 20/30 minutes, but we grew into the game a little bit, got ourselves back into it, stayed in it and earned probably a good point from it in the end.” – David Moyes

SORRY SAINTS – JONES SACKED

If you’re an owner of Kepa Arrizabalaga (£4.6m) or any other Chelsea asset, you’d probably have wanted Nathan Jones to still be at the helm come Gameweek 24. That won’t happen, however, after Jones was sacked on Sunday morning.

In his final game, Southampton contrived to throw away a 1-0 lead against 10-man Wolverhampton Wanderers and fall to their ninth defeat in ten league matches.

Budget midfielder Kamaldeen Sulemana (£5.0m) caught the eye, registering six shots in an ‘out of position’ run-out up top, but the reality is that Saints are way off the Fantasy radar at present, particularly at the back where only one clean sheet has arrived in the last 28 Premier League fixtures.

“I have no idea [if I’ll still be in charge next weekend].

“It was a tough afternoon, I thought for 60 minutes we were excellent and we created enough opportunities, knowing we had to go after the second goal. If we got that, we would have probably gone on to win the game.

“It’s a different mentality, atmosphere and everything. As we didn’t do that, we were always susceptible to counterattack and lost control of the game in the second half. They showed that quality.” – Nathan Jones

BUENO BENCHED AGAIN – BUT COMES ON AS A SUB

Wolves, by contrast, are doing well under new management, with four wins and a draw arriving from Julen Lopetegui’s first seven matches in charge.

A comical Jan Bednarek (£4.2m) own-goal drew Wolves level at St Mary’s before midfielder Joao Gomes (£4.5m), not renowned for his goalscoring exploits, emerged from the bench to grab the winner.

Fellow midfield anchor Mario Lemina (£4.5m) had earlier been sent off for two bookings, so it’s difficult to gauge a performance in which the visitors played for over an hour with ten men, except to praise their resolve.

Hugo Bueno (£3.9m) was named among the substitutes for the second match running but replaced a booked Rayan Ait-Nouri (£4.2m) at the interval, delivering an encouraging display that would have stirred up hope among his owners of more starts somewhere down the line – especially in Double Gameweek 25.

Think this should be ignored. Every player can be banned due to red card any time, nice thing that Toney will not get -3 if banned.

Take it Bueno has lost his starting place now? What's changed?

Said this on last article but benched twice and only came on with the change of system after red card. Doesn't look good. That said, he may well get some sub appearances in the double in 25 so he's better than a blank

He may get his place back as the first choice left back, but expect rotation as both young left backs, Ait-Nouri and Bueno, are in a developmental phase and appear to be in healthy competition.

Being unregistered for UCL is definitely an advantage for FPL. If Chelsea beat Dortmund I'll have to think about Badiashile over James. But they do have a lot of CBs- is he definitely 1st choice in a back 4 when all are fit?

It's a marathon, not a sprint. You took out a guy with 2 games in 3 weeks and replaced him with a guy who has 4. Should comfortably outscore him by the time GW25 is over, even if it doesn't pay this week

It was the right decision for a doubler. 5 blanks in a row and we did not know until after the deadline Wilson was not available.

I don't look at my bench points or previously owned players anymore. No point, really, as hindsight is always clearer than predictions

I now analyze the newly emerging big-picture data and improve my decision-making process based on logical lessons learned, rather than focusing on outcomes. We can't control outcomes

How do you learn lessons if you don't check on the performance(s) of the players you benched or sold?

IMO it's actually a very important thing to check, and helps improve decision-making going forward even more. Maybe there were some statistics you overlooked & shouldn't have? Have you were too hasty? Etc etc.

        1. Ze_Austin

All players available in the game are involved in "the newly emerging big-picture data" I mentioned there

I'm talking about looking at points from previous decisions instead of looking at data for future decisions

"I benched/sold this guy who hauled" is different from "I should play/buy this guy (back) because he's proving to be a great asset"

Benching, selling and capping a player has no impact on his performances, so I don't consider that in future decisions. It's a past event. I can't take it back, so I don't look at it. Looking at it only hurts. The best decisions for this GW will not recover last GW's benched points

I'm the kind of FPL player to buy an asset I sold 2 GWs ago or start a player I previously thought of as backup on the bench (like Ward's run back then), because I know that selling/benching him has no impact on his form or fixtures or stats or the team he players for. Same thing as considering price when picking players, for me

"Benching, selling and capping a player has no impact on his performances, so I don't consider that in future decisions."

Yes it has no impact on the players performance - but honeslty I think you should 100% always question yourself WHY you made the decision you did. That is super important.

You may find a flaw or something you gave too much weighting too, that you can learn from - or indeed you can still tell yourself it was a good decision to make based on the facts & be happy with that decision regardless of the outcome.

Even I - if I've made a mistake, would bring back a player I should have sold or think I need - if it makes sense to. Admitadly I make far less of those bad decisions now through experience.

But you yourself as a person are a massive part of the decision making process for any transfer and to disregard how it happens if it goes badly is a bit of a folly given how big a part of the process you as a person are.

Just IMO - but I'd point to both of our rank histories as to why I recon this sort of thing is important.

I'll just refer to a snippet of my earlier post, which you seem to be ignoring here:

" and improve my decision-making process based on logical lessons learned"

I mentioned it. Right there. That I'll improve my decision-making process based on logical lessons learned

You are expanding my points, not countering them. Do you see that now?

My point is that I don't look at points on the bench or points for sold players, but focus on decisions for who I'll start next or who I'll buy/keep. If those involve the sold/benched players, I'm fine with analyzing my decision-making process and newly available data to then improve upon that and choose to start or buy back said player

So you do consider the the players you sold/bench/didn't cap then?

I don't see how you can learn logical lessons by disregarding how you made your decisions, because to understand if it was the correct logical choice you also need to have checked the outcome(s) i.e. "look at my bench points or previously owned players anymore."

Sorry but I see a massive gap in reasoning.

Not mad or anything, this is a nice debate - but I do often see you (also) write big long paragraphs very often which also disregard information, and sort of echoing this here.

I'm being as clear as I think I can possibly be, but I'll summarise it with this:

I analyze my decision-making process. I change plans, change my views on certain teams and players, and adapt weekly

I don't look at benched points or check what a player I sold scored

These are two different things. One focuses on the past, while the other focuses on the future

That sold/benched/uncapped player or the data behind the decision to sell/bench/not cap him will still be involved in the big-picture data for future decisions, but counting benched/sold points when I know I can't change that past decision only hurts me

There's nothing I can do about the score that March got in GW23. Nothing I can do about switching Estupinan to Akanji as the last move on my WC in GW18. Nothing I can do to bring back the points I didn't get for capping Toney over Haaland. No point dwelling on those and letting them bring my mood down

But I can then choose to buy March next GW. I can choose to cap Haaland in GW23. I can choose to get Estupinan in GW24 or GW26. These are decisions based on currently available data, not focused on past regret

                  1. Ze_Austin
                    • 7 Years
                    2 years, 9 months ago

If there are better options to start or buy than the one I sold or benched, I'll get that better option instead

I'm never going to focus on how bad a past outcome was and rush to undo it. There might be a newly emerging asset who is better than the one I regret selling. I'll buy him

If the sold/benched asset becomes the best asset to buy/start this GW or next, I'll buy him. His stats, confidence, team tactics and fixtures have nothing to do with whether I just benched or sold him

Can I use a super dumbed down example to explain the logic gap here?

You create a prediction model that if every time [thing] A or B does better'. You run the models and it the model recommends A over B.

When it happens in real life however, B outperforms A.

You run it another week. It recommends player A over B. This time however in reality, B outperforms A.

You run it 50 times and the model gets it wrong every time. However - when you regressively look at how many times A won over B, you notice A won 40/50 times.

Clearly the model could be improved by taking into account past outcomes instead of purely basing itself on the most recent data every time.

                        I'll explain one more time:

Big picture data involves looking at as much info as I can, including how well a player did in the past

My point is that I don't *look at* points on my bench or points for players I sold or didn't cap

I will look at those same players (and many others) when making my next decision. I'll check their stats, form, opponents, team tactics, etc when making my next FPL decision

I am always open to change my stance on any team or player, even if I don't have 'em. What I don't do is look at points on my bench

I will always look at as many players as I can, regardless of whether they were on my bench last GW or I just sold them. What I don't do is "How many points did Kane get on my bench?" or "I just sold March and he scored!"

For example, if my approach to considering said players to be benched vs a certain type of opponent seems flawed as I assess what I should do this GW, I'll update that

"I had this player before he scored" and "I benched a haul" only hurt if they're the focus. The focus is on adapting and improving instead, which sometimes involves changing the reasons I'll sell/bench a player, perma-starting/capping a player for a while or against a type of opponent, or buying them back if my current assets don't seem good enough on future/current review

Regardless of your 'big picture' approach - I think we have to agree to disagree here.

I think that looking at/counting points from transfer/benching decisions is sort of inportant. At the end of the day points are king and transfers can be 'expensive' in terms of points. Not keeping tabs on how the decision you didn't go for ends up, I think, means you're missing out on a area of learning. I won't say you're wrong, but I'll have to disagree about it there being 'no point' to it.

At the end of the day you've admitted that you're perhaps transfer heavy & learning to slow down - but as I said transfers are expensive & overall points-wise it has an effect.

I review my decisions, rather than focusing on past outcomes, because I have no control over many of the factors that influence outcomes in football, on and off the pitch

If I then find that there was a flaw in my decision process or there's new data (among the factors I can see) to suggest an update, I will make that update, but never just because Player X outscored Player Y in the small sample size of one GW, where so many things come into play like cards, offsides, ref calls, off days, spirited opponents, etc

The randomness of such factors in a single GW stop me from focusing on points on the bench in that GW or points scored the exact GW I sold a player. I prefer a holistic view, which still involves said benched and sold players

                        That's all I'm saying

Over the course of a few GWs or half a season, I always assess my decision process. This involves how I pick who to bench, sell or cap

But I don't look at the points that a player I just sold or benched scored. It's not a big enough sample size, and it usually depends on factors which are 50:50 or unpredictable

If it happens again, that's more data. If it happens thrice, that's thrice too many and I should be checking my decision process thoroughly

But my comment was in reply to someone reviewing his Almiron to Mahrez decision based solely on what Almiron has scored this GW, rather than more data like Wilson's unforeseen absence, Mahrez's performances that haven't happened yet, and Almiron's stats and performances before and after this one GW. This approach is what I'm referring to. I don't do that anymore. It has to be a bigger picture than one GW's returns, for me

I agree with this about not being too focussed on outcomes (or results-oriented as it would be termed in poker). For a simplified example, if you did Almiron - Ødegaard, it doesn't become a bad move just because Almiron finally popped up with a goal. Its the decision-making process that needs examination more than the points on the board.

I've already mentioned this on my last post.

There are situations where it is completely fine for a move to have turned out bad but you to have made it for all the right reasons. The example you've used is probably one of those.

However there are often transfer/benching/captaincy decisions that are not made for entirely the correct decisions - we as people are not faultless.

Yeah I see that now, was writing my reply at the same time as your follow up. I guess there's no easy answer but I try to take a more holistic view of assessing them by performance, stats, tactics, fixtures etc. So, with Almiron (if we ignore the BGW for this example) - I'd ask myself, what has changed since I first brought him in, and are these just temporary blips or part of a new trend? Was he overperforming before? Is it down to recent opponents' defending? Bruno's absence? And try to assess over a few GWs rather than just 1 or 2.

In my case, I think the most common misjudgement I make is to take a specific read of how I think a particular fixture will go based on recent form, without allowing enough room for uncertainty / bucking of the trend. As in the horrendous benching of Haaland v Wolves

Yeah. Mine's been to calm down on transfers and trust my past self more, which is a promise I made on WC18 and only broke to get Mitoma in for a hit

I was really transfer crazy last year & did that thing of selling, regretting & rebuying players a few times. But I think having a big squad like we do now has helped massively with this. I think it mainly stems from a perfectionist tendency where I'm unhappy starting players with substandard fixtures, but now its so much easier to manoeuvre with a properly deep bench.

Same here. It's a bit easier this half-season with cheap performers all over the squad

I'll try to get used to seeing bad fixtures this season, and then use that experience when prices are probably more balanced next season

Fair play dude - I actually realised you'd have read it after my post when I hit send!

FYI I agree with this too - I just don't see how completely disregarding how the players performed can be beneficial to your future decisions.

To quote ZE_Austin's latest example... It's fine if you end up bringing back a player you sold for example - but surely there's a lesson to be learnt if you analyse the situation properly & realise you could have saved a -4/-8 by learning something for next time that means you wouldn't have made that decision.

Not saying this even necessarily applies to this situation but a lot of FPL managers don't even bother to watch the team/player they're making decisions on - and post online pretending they took everything into account.

No I agree with that. I'm not disregarding performance, just contextualising the outcome. Always keeping an eye on the teams that I have / might want players from, including Newcastle even after selling Almiron (luckily have enough time to watch around 5 full games per week the moment)

Not really possible to have doubles without blanks, unless you're timing your pivots from one team to another... Could maybe get a Wolves/Everton defender & then sell for Estupinan in 26 or 29?

Everton has Leeds at home and they may not keep a CS this week, wolves has better fixture this gw and two away fixtures in 25

    Kepa
    Gabriel, Shaw, Trippier
    KDB, Rashford, Odegaard, Mitoma
    Haaland(c), Kane, Mitrovic

    Ederson, Martinelli, Bueno, Patterson

Going into 25 I'll have 2FT (assuming a roll this week) and the following 9 starters

    Kepa
    Bueno, Gabriel
    Martinelli, Saka, Mahrez
    Kane, Mitro, Haaland

Despite concerns over form and/or minutes for a number of them, I presume a defensive pair of moves (say Botman and Shaw to two of Badshiale, Moreno, Ream or similar) probably makes most sense?

Loads ITB so could do a big upgrade of Martinelli or Mitro but leaves me with 9 starters....

I don't mind just one defensive move here actually, playing 333 & retaining Botman or Shaw. (Was it you that wanted to switch out Botman for another Newcastle defender?). The replacements for 25 are likely to have a fairly short span in your team & no DGW in 29 (if that's matters)

I like Martinelli to Odegaard this week, as I think the Villa game will be open than the two GW23 games, and it's nice to get more minutes for that and beyond

Then just the Shaw to Chelsea move next week: Badiashile vs James depends on your risk appetite. I'm getting James for attacking threat and some 1-pointers while Kepa's there to lock in the clean sheets, but that's purely due to the way I play

Rolling with 12 fixtures from 9 players in GW25

Mitro to Toney looks good for GW26

I like double Newcastle for their four likely fixtures in GWs 27 to 29, and even far beyond

      1. Ze_Austin

I don't see it happening. You'd just have to hope on it, highly doubt he's in a position to even be on the bench tomorrow so he might be lucky enough to be there next week, and if he is then you're gambling that A) Dyche thinks he's fit to start a game and play 60+ mins and B) Dyche thinks he's a better option than Coleman. I'm doubtful on both of those

Honestly why on earth do we have VAR? All of these were so blatant to see on replays:

    - Estupinan goal incorrectly disallowed
    - Chelsea denied a stonewall penalty
    - Toney goal shouldn’t have been given

What happens if Arsenal lose the title because of this error for example?

I think ref decisions should be covered by the legal documents that all clubs sign every season, except where they can bring proof of bribery et al

I've even seen instances where refs later said during the same season that there was an error in the decision, yet nothing changed points wise

Give them some credit, though: They got the Barnes first goal decision right. His toe was a couple of mm ahead of the last defender. Granted, it had no impact on the result.

Reminds of that Meat Loaf song - 1 out of 4 ain't bad.

i still think one of the strangest managerial decisions ever was rodgers inexplicably dropping nacho after that final half of the season when he had some of the best numbers in europe. what changed over that summer? not fitting into his new formation doesnt explain it. i can only think it was possibly down to keeping vardy happy because why would you just suffenly a players momentum like that. I wonder is he privately realising what a mistake that was after seeing how good nacho is again with a decent run of games under his belt

He's done it loads of times though. Last season at one point he had both Vardy and Daka missing, so Iheanacho's surely got to finally be first option then right? Nope, Harvey Barnes plays OOP up top. I'm never going to believe he'll keep playing him. He'd easily be in my team most of the season round if I felt confident he'd keep playing when fit, but one not great game or even half and I bet he goes back to benching him

Said the same thing yesterday. Baffling, almost a sackable offence when you consider the results in the interim period.

Brendan Rodgers routinely mismanaged players during his time at Liverpool. It was quite maddening in fact.

Think that's logical. Top 10k stayed risk adverse whilst those outside used the opportunity to make gains.

Surely it's more indicative that that the "engaged played" template has just performed worse than that of the "less engaged player" template so far?

Players such as Almiron, Toney, Andreas, & Trossard (he had a good spell earlier this season at BHA) all scored points, whilst that more active managers have mostly sold/benched those players.

Yep this, basically the FFS community have moved on “underperforming players” who have all returned to form this week while the more casual players have retained them. Basically we’ve all tried to be too smart and failed.

Essentially. At the end of the day you'd still back the 'active' managers due to DGWs & BGWs coming up, so nothing too scary - just less of a 'jump' on other players as a result of those other players scoring points.

Was always good to target his side with opposition players, was already lining up Chelsea players for next week.

VAR is supposed to rule out errors, but the humans in charge of the system don’t follow the procedure, need sacking & replacing!

Shocking decision, but Brentford themselves can feel very hard done by regarding the "foul" called in the first half against Toney before Mbeumo scored, albeit after the whistle was blown

I think Man Utd assets are all going to have to be sold, going to be very unpredictable who play’s especially when those that don’t start will probably still get little cameos.

Including Rashford? For most players 2 blanks in 4 GW would be reason to sell but with Liverpool & Southampton in between its tough to find many better options for 26-7

This is what I've seen floating.

      De Gea
      Dalot Maguire Shaw Malacia
      Fred Sabitzer
      Sancho Bruno Rashford
      Weghorst

Sort of makes sense? I read some tactical analysis than Varane was targeted in the last match due to his passing. With Barca midweek seems an okay opportunity, even if it is for Maguire.

Rashford on the left 100% better - he probably moves central later (for Garnacho, or Elanga? if Weghorst/Sancho is subbed. Sancho could be quite effective down Leeds weak flank there - they tried with Rashford last week but Rashford wasn't as comfortable.

Shaw at CB sucks for me but it is what it is!

What’s more important for Man Utd ?

Beating Leeds and Leicester in the PL.

Beating Barcelona in the Europa League over 2 legs.

Or winning the Carabao Cup Final.

5 games in the next 2 weeks, gonna be fascinating to see what side ETH puts out today but I am sure he won’t play the same team for those next 5 games over that 2 week period.

100% a guess but feel securing as best a Premier League positions possible & being 1 step away from a trophy (even if it is the Carabao Cup) is most important right now... in the short term. They haven't won't a trophy in a while.

They're in a great position to grab an UCL spot for next year so might as well focus on that rather than the long-winded route they'd have to follow in the Europa League.

However Europa League does pay out much more money & players will love the chance to play Barcelona.

Probably go strong-ish on all fronts - but Premier League most important. It's not even like they are NOT in the title race either.

I think the team sheet today will be very telling and then whether he rotates in the EL will determine whether to keep Man Utd players in FPL for the Leicester game.

Am sure he will play the absolute first team in CC final as that first trophy is so important and Newcastle will also be desperate to win it. .
