The 2022/23 UEFA Champions League (UCL) is back this week – which means it’s also time for the competition’s official Fantasy game to return.

With prizes dished out every Matchday, UCL Fantasy also offers an incentive for managers to belatedly enter a team even if you are yet to sign up.

Here, our in-house expert FPL Reactions takes a look at the upcoming round and its most appealing assets.

GOALKEEPERS

FPL review: Kepa hauls again but James misses out on clean sheet 2

Firstly it is vital that we have two playing goalkeepers on different days in this Matchday. This will give us the ability to substitute the first playing goalkeeper for the second if he fails to return.

Chelsea have been improving defensively under Graham Potter so investing in the cheap Kepa Arrizabalaga (€4.5m) could be a wise move.

If Kepa fails to return we can bring in Porto’s Diogo Costa (€5.2m), who picked up a whopping three double-digit hauls in the group stage. His points consisted of three penalty saves, an assist and three clean sheets, making him the highest-scoring goalkeeper in the game so far.

DEFENDERS

Benfica play a struggling Club Brugge and have managed an impressive six clean sheets in their last 10 matches in all competitions. For that reason, doubling up on their defensive assets could be beneficial. One of those options is left-back Alejandro Grimaldo (€5.3m), who has already picked up six clean sheets, three assists and two goals, totalling 11 returns in his last 10 games. The second Benfica defensive option is centre-back Nicolas Otamendi (€4.7m). He managed to collect 45 ball recoveries in the groups, whilst also creating an assist.

Chelsea’s flying full-back Reece James (€6.2m) could be hard to exclude. He proved his potential against AC Milan in Matchday 3, scoring, assisting and keeping a clean sheet to pick up a colossal 20 points. On his day he can be the most dangerous defender in Europe.

Joao Cancelo (€6.7m) may have made his move over to Bayern Munich but his offensive ability has not dwindled. The Portuguese full-back has created two assists in his last three matches for the German giants, also bagging two clean sheets.

Napoli are one of the most in-form teams in Europe right now so investing in them will be key. The standout defensive option from the Italian side is Giovanni Di Lorenzo (€7.1m). He has claimed two double-digit hauls in the group stages, with the help of one goal, one assist and a player of the match award.

MIDFIELDERS

Jude Bellingham (€7.5m) has become Mr. Champions League this season, collecting a return in every game he has played including three double-digit hauls. The English midfielder thrives on the big stage and with his multiple routes to points, from creating assists to scoring goals, he feels inevitable.

Benfica have averaged 1.8 goals per game in their last 10 matches so it could be wise to invest in their attack, especially against a Club Brugge side that have kept just one clean sheet in the same period. Joao Mario (€6.1m) is arguably one of the best enablers in the game. As well as taking penalties Mario has managed six goals and one assist in his last 10.

Similar to Bellingham, there is something about the Champions League that makes Leroy Sane (€9.3m) shine. Playing for a team with one of the highest scoring averages this season and returning in every single group stage match he played, it may be difficult to exclude the Bayern winger.

Napoli have been firing on all cylinders this season, flying high in their domestic league whilst also notching 24 goals in their last 10 matches. Investing in their attack could be absolutely key and the standout option is none other than Khvicha Kvaratskhelia (€5.9m). The 22-year-old has netted nine goals and created nine assists this season domestically, totalling 18 goal contributions in 18 matches.

Liverpool have been conceding more big chances than most of the other teams in the Premier League so targeting their defence could be hugely beneficial. Vincius Junior (€10m) has been fantastic for Real Madrid this season. The Brazilian hit returns in five of his six group stage matches and could thrive down Liverpool’s sketchy right flank.

FORWARDS

With Manchester City’s Erling Haaland (€11.1m) back in training after picking up a knock against Aston Villa this week, it would take a brave manager to leave him out. The relentless striker has produced an incredible 25 goals and four assists in his 21 domestic league matches this season.

Further investment in the Napoli attack could be beneficial and Victor Osimhen (€7.9m) is the obvious selection. Osimhen has produced 17 goals and three assists in Serie A this campaign, creating more goal contributions than matches played.

Real Madrid have vast experience in the latter stages of the competition so relying on them could be a wise decision. Main man and penalty taker Karim Benzema (€10.7M) may be an easy inclusion into our drafts. The Frenchman has picked up three assists and one goal in his last two matches so has form to carry into the last 16.

So I am thinking that I’ll bench KDB this week:

    Kepa
    Trips Shaw Akanji
    Saka Odegaard Rashford Mitoma
    Haaland Kane Nketiah

    Ward KDB Schar Bueno

If Haaland gets a rest v NFO ahead of the CL then Kev can come back in..

    Thoughts!?

Good to save ft this week? I've already played my WC so need to plan accordingly. 1ft and 2.7itb

    Ederson
    Shaw Trippier Gabriel
    Rashford Mahrez Saka Odegaard
    Haaland Kane Ferguson

    Ward; Bueno, Botman, Rodrigo*

If I'm going to make a transfer this week it will likely be Botman -> Tarkowski but that is an easy transfer to make in GW25 as well.

What are people doing with Almiron? Gut says it's time to ditch but he has a match against a terrible defence this week and is also the 5th highest scoring player in the game and only costs 5.7.

I think having 11 in 25 might be overrated - feel like I can get away with 9 or 10. This is how my team would currently line up for 25 and I've got 2FT and plenty of cash (assuming a roll this week) to improve it.

    Kepa
    Bueno, Gabriel
    Martinelli, Saka, Mahrez
    Kane, Mitro, Haaland

(Ward, Botman, Shaw, Trippier, Rashford, Mitoma)

Between now and 25, which looks better?

    a. Martinelli to Odegaard and Botman to Doubling/non-blank defender (play 10)
    b. Mitro to Felix (or Jota/Nunez if feeling Brave) and Botman to Doubling or other non-blank defender (play 10)
    c. Botman and Shaw to 2no. Doubling/non-blank defenders (play 11)

If I am feeling brave, defender could be Robertson/Trent for the double in 25. If not, likely Badshiale/James as no blank in 28 either and possible double in 29. Could also be Everton or Villa for similar reasons

    1. The Mentaculus
      • 4 Years

I agree this looks fine with just Botman - James/Badiashile. Don't think I would spend that 2nd FT on an Everton/Villa defender just to field 11 when you would probably have to move him out again in 3 more GWs or so. Think there's slightly more immediate upside to the Ødegaard move, although Felix does look great.

      1. Biggsy
        • Fantasy Football Scout Member

Yeah, I was always on C but it doesn't really feel like it has an upside. Maybe if I wanted to punt on Trent and get Chelsea defender as well, but that's probably booking a transfer or two later on the shift the funds out of defence.

So it feels like A or B is the move

    2. agueroooooney
      • 11 Years

11 is overrated. Just try to have as many of the most explosive highly owned players as possible (usually mid/fwd). So prioritise having a good front 7 and not just fielding players because theyr'e playing (e.g. I had to talk myself out of considering Neves)

KDB hasn't been a great asset since his 9.5 19-20 season 260ish points

Appreciate he scored 4 at Molineux last season and has had his odd moment since, but it feels Maneesque. Astoundingly good season followed by being permanently overpriced as a top tier mid, yet never replicate when they were at 9.5

            😆

In all seriousness, I don't think his price will drop now given KDB and Mane being elevated permanently to 12+ off the back of one stellar season and Son arguably had two.

If Conte's replacement is attacking and Son has a price drop down to around 11 then there may be some interest. 10m and I reckon there'd be loads

He's generally thought of as good because of his relatively nailed nature when fit. But with City not firing on their usual set of cylinders this side of the WC, KDB being dropped in favour of Alvarez vs 5ATB he is nowhere near the asset his price demands. To be honest, I think if it wasn't that other premiums are also stuttering, there wouldn't be a question to get rid. But as there is little budget pressure, he is able to languish in teams longer than he should

He's got a different role with Haaland in the team, barely shoots anymore unfortunately. He still has moments of greatness and the driving runs are still there, but the unbelievable whipped crosses he used to do for fun aren't coming off at the moment. I'm sure that will come back but for the goal threat the team shape will have to change. Maybe it will, the team is still in transition. But yes, he's far from premium FPL asset thus far this season.

What to do with this bunch?

    Kepa
    Trippier - White - Lewis
    KDB - Martinelli - Odegaard - Rashford
    Haaland - Kane - Mitrovic

    Ward - Almiron - Schar - Bueno

    2 FT 1.3 itb

Lots of minor issues to sort out, rank tumbling the last couple of weeks. Issues I have are Lewis, KDB, Martinelli, Almiron and Mitrovic. Will probably end up keeping them all for GW25 except Almiron but currently undecided.

Who would you prioritise ditching this week with 2 FT?

Lewis & Mitro to Gnonto & Shaw. KdB to Salah next

Been tinkering with the chip strategy. Haven't seen anyone suggesting FH27, WC29 and BB34/37. What do you think about that? Can maximize GW27, dead end to GW28 with let's say 10 playing players and then pick the WC team after international break.

Obviously bench boost would be ideal to play directly after WC but we know the best cheap assets (Mitoma, MacAllister, Estupinan etc.) and they will double in GW34 (Wol (H) and another fixture).

There are so many options it's all a bit of a head breaker.

        I'm looking at free hit in bgw28 or dgw29.....Wildcard 33 bb34

Team dependent. You will only have 1FT in BGW28 if you FH27

GW27 is looking like an enormous bench problem.

    United - SOU
    Liverpool - bou
    City - cry
    Arsenal - ful

I'm looking at a team of:

    Kepa
    Shaw Trippier White
    Salah Mahrez Saka Rashford
    Haaland Darwin Nketiah

How do you fit in any Brighton or Brentford DGW players? The only one I can see being slam dunk worth it is White > Estupinan.

      Brighton face Leeds/Palace.
      Brentford face Everton/Southampton

Question is how to not triple up on them both. I'd play bench boost but the upside in doubles is just so much more.

These fixtures look like WC26 and BB27 and carry the cheap assets on the bench and rotate for rest of the season

Agree, but it's fixtures too isn't it, eg., arsenal assets with Brentford and city at home have bean like a single gw so far.

If u can save Bench Boost till 34 I'd do that. Fixtures look good for the good teams.

The question though is do you FH in a week with many blanks (e.g. upcoming 25 or 28) or do you do it in a week such as 27 where you have many DGW that you may not own? I doubt anyone has 6 Brighton + Brentford.

Liverpool players will be the main difference if you're keeping them post-25 & hoping they get a game in 28 (honestly, I expect Fulham to beat Leeds to give LIV/FUL BGW). My projected team is:

      Raya
      Trippier Schär Estupinan
      Saka Ødegaard Rashford Mitoma
      Haaland Kane Toney
      (Leno, Maddison, James, Moreno)

Fulham have been much improved defensively so I'm not too sure I'd play triple against them unless they're flying once more. Won't bench Rashford, no interest in Liverpool, Palace always difficult for City and I only have 1 City right now. Shouldn't be too difficult for me to play Mitoma, MacAllister and have moved Nketiah to Toney by then

    Kepa
    Trippier - Laporte - Shaw
    KDB - Martinelli - Saka - Rashford
    Nketiah - Haaland - Mitrovic

    A) Save FT
    B) Laporte to Robertson
    C) Mitro to Darwin

In prep for DGW25 I will be 100% moving out Laporte, KDB and Mitro for Triple Lpool and am 0.1 away from TAA so Robbo it is!

FH in BGW25? I'll be missing six players*, but it could be eight with Patterson and N.Williams losing their places/injury. 1FT 1.6M ITB. FH and BB available, TC on Haaland this week!

Struggling with navigating the upcoming blanks...or perhaps it's WC time?

    Kepa
    Tripper* | Gabriel | Schar*
    Rashford* | Saka | Odegaard | Bruno*
    Toney* | Haaland | Kane

    Ward, Mitoma*, N.Williams, Patterson

    1FT, 2.5 ITB, thoughts?

    Kepa / Ward
    Trippier / Shaw / Akanji / White / Patterson
    KDB / Fernandes / Rashford / Martinelli / Andreas
    Haaland / Mitrovic / Nketiah

    Initial thoughts are:
    GW24: Hold
    GW25: Shaw & Fernandes to Kilman/Tarkowski/Gomez & Salah
